Sister Fanfic: Serious Side Reels - A Grand Order of Heroes sidestories
The Hoshidan Summer Festival has arrived.
During summer, Hoshido celebrates the First Dragons who helped found their nation and created the Dragon Veins that are found throughout their world with a Festival. Hoshido always extends an invitation to all nations to join their festivities during this sacred time. It is considered a privilege for all nations to receive such an invitation. The festivities primarily consist of games that many people of Earth claim would not look out of place in a Japanese summer festival back home.
The festival offers a variety of attractions, including food, games, and a grand fireworks display as the finale.
However, when it comes to events like these, the most memorable and enjoyable way to experience the festivities is with a partner. Unfortunately, not all men have a special lady to accompany them to the festival, which presents an opportunity for lonely individuals to meet new people. Therefore, festivals also serve as a great place for some to find new love or secure dates.
Even married individuals sometimes find themselves attending the festival alone, often due to conflicting work schedules or being in different locations. However, the majority of men would hesitate to attend such an event by themselves as it may raise eyebrows and lead others to question their loyalty to their wives.
One individual who falls into both categories mentioned above is Inigo. He is married and has a child, but by the grace of his deity Naga, his daughter also shares his interest in women.
Furthermore, although he is already married, he often uses the excuse of "father-daughter bonding" to flirt with women while his daughter accompanies him. Surprisingly, his wife is aware of this behavior and seems to be fine with it, possibly because she knows how unsuccessful they are in attracting real women.
Inigo is not alone in his endeavors. Since joining the Order of Heroes, he has met many men with similar tastes, and they occasionally embark on flirtatious excursions together. Their success rate may be low, but that is not the primary goal. The act of approaching a woman and asking her for a cup of tea is an experience they value immensely.
At this moment, Inigo was on his way to visit someone in particular, Hans Christian Andersen.
This childlike man perplexed him.
He was undoubtedly the most unchivalrous scoundrel Inigo had ever encountered, constantly boasting about his virginity and openly displaying his disdain for women.
For someone like Inigo, this person was an anomaly to be avoided whenever possible, especially when not on a mission.
He had thought that would be the end of it, but he was taken aback when he discovered that Lady Camilla, his Liege's beloved and voluptuous older sister, had developed an unhealthy obsession with the man.
For months, she dedicated her life to plotting the most gruesome ways to harm him, which gave Inigo nightmares when he accidentally stumbled upon her plans while encountering her in the library.
Then, out of nowhere, that obsession somehow transformed into a twisted form of love. Everyone in the castle was caught off guard when Hans one day sat on Camilla's lap while she spoon-fed him.
And don't even get him started on the rumors that Hans actively visits the infirmary during Lady Manuela's shifts, or the concerning allegations regarding the hundreds of letters he sends her on a frequent basis. How on earth did he manage to flirt with another woman while having Lady Camilla's affections... and survive?!
Inigo was determined to uncover his secrets. That's why he stood in front of the blue heroic spirit's apartment with a proposal to join their group for tonight's Summer Hoshidan Festival Skirt Chasing excursion as a means to gain insight into his methods.
"So, what do you say Sir Hans? My colleagues and I would love to have you join-"
*SLAM*
Hans slammed the door in his face and refused to provide any further information.
How rude.
Inigo shook his head and made his way back to meet his wife and daughter.
"So, I guess he won't be joining us on our excursion?" His daughter asked.
"It seems that way, but don't worry, Soleil. I will uncover his secrets one of these days," Inigo replied.
"Do you really need to learn those skills? You already have me," Azura pointed out.
"Honey, it's just mere curiosity that drives me to uncover Hans's flirting secrets. I promise, nothing more," Inigo reassured her.
"Hmm... well, if you say so," Azura responded.
"Oh, come on, dear. Even you can't deny that you're curious as well. You know firsthand how strong Lady Camilla's..." Inigo began to say but struggled to find the right word.
"Possessiveness," without a hint of shame, his wife Azura finished his sentence, filling the silence which was caused by his hesitation.
"I was going to say loyalty, but yes, her loyalty toward men who capture her affections can be intense. How Hans managed to convince Lady Camilla to let him pursue another woman is a baffling mystery," Inigo explained.
Azura hummed but didn't comment further.
"That's a shame. I really wanted to know his secret because, by Naga, I wish that could be me," Soleil chimed in from behind them, causing both parents to shake their heads at their daughter's confession.
Like father, like daughter.

The sun had set, and the Hoshidan Summer Festival was now in full swing.
Paper lanterns adorned the stalls and illuminated the Hoshidan Plaza, creating a calm and enchanting atmosphere for everyone in attendance.
And, of course, we have our protagonists, a group of charismatic men, and lady, going around and thoroughly enjoying themselves at the festival. Of course, not everyone in their usual group could make the trip to the excursion, but they made do with the smaller number of members they had and went around engaging in flirtations with the locals.
*SLAP*
"Ow!"
Whether they were successful or not.
"Hahahaha! Oh man, that was so loud that even people on the far edges of Nohr could hear it!" Soleil exclaimed, pointing and laughing at the redheaded noble, Sylvain Jose Gautier, who now had a red slap mark on his face matching his hair.
"This? Nah, it's nothing. Just a light tap-OW!" Sylvain winced as Soleil touched the tender red flesh on his cheek with her finger.
"Uh huh, whatever you say, tough guy," Soleil responded with a playful tone.
"Whatever," the redhead retorted, rolling his eyes.
"While I agree that Sylvain often boasts about his manliness, I can vouch for his claims," spoke up Lorenz, a blue-haired nobleman with narrow eyes, a narrow face, and a slender physique.
"Oh? Do tell," Soleil prompted.
"Lorenz, don't," Sylvain attempted to interrupt, but Inigo cut him off, saying, "No, please continue. I have a feeling where this is going, considering Sylvain, but I want to hear it from you."
"Hey, what's that supposed to mean?"
"If you insist. There was this one incident where he attempted to charm a nobleman's wife," Lorenz began, once again ignoring Sylvain. "Little did he know that the wife was fiercely loyal to her husband and held a strong dislike for 'playboys' after being heartbroken by one in her youth."
"Understandable. Poor nobleman's wife," Inigo chimed in, standing near his daughter.
"Indeed. Not only did she carry the pain of a broken heart, but she also had a peculiar obsession with grooming, in particular maintaining long fingernails," Lorenz continued, crossing his arms. Meanwhile, Soleil and Inigo let out a hiss, and Sylvain instinctively touched his cheek, only to wince in pain due to its sensitivity.
"Ouch. That sounds rough, buddy," Soleil sympathized with Sylvain, "though I am surprised it didn't leave a scar."
"Yes, well, if it weren't for the healers and apothecaries nearby, a scar would have been the least of his problems," Lorenz added.
"Apothecary?" Soleil furrowed her brow in confusion, surprised by the unexpected mention in the story.
"Oh, right. I forgot to mention that the nobleman's wife had a peculiar habit of adding snake venom to her nail polish," Lorenz explained, a hint of distaste evident on his face.
Those who had been eavesdropping nearby were taken aback by the sudden turn of events.
"Whoa, really!?"
"Yes, indeed, Ms. Soleil. The nail polish is harmless when dry, but once it breaks into smaller pieces and enters the bloodstream, like when it's transferred through a clawed slap on a man's face, it becomes deadly," Lorenz shivered. "The only reason Sylvain wasn't executed for hitting on another man's wife was due to his higher status. In fact, the poor woman faced repercussions from the nobility due to her use of venom in her fingernails."
"Yeah, I can imagine. She basically had an assassination weapon with her at all times," Soleil remarked, contemplating the various issues that could arise from having such nails. "poor noble lady, she just wanted to spend time with her husband at an event and was punished for defending herself against a savage predator. Truly the world we live in is a rotten one."
"I concur. It was a great injustice that fell upon her." Lorenz added.
"Okay, okay, I messed up and got a poor lady in trouble. I apologized for the incident and my family smoothed things over with them. Now, can we get back to flirting? The festival will be over before we know it," Sylvain pleaded, eager to move on from the topic.
While Sylvain's deflection was evident in his words, he did have a valid point.
"Yikes, you're right! We're wasting time! Can't let my old man show me up in the flirting game. Alright, guys, wish me luck. I'm going in!" Soleil declared as she disappeared into the bustling crowd.
As Inigo observed his daughter's enthusiasm for flirting, a mixture of pride and a competitive spirit surged within him. He couldn't help but feel joy watching Soleil as she charmed her way into the hearts of ladies. However, a part of him didn't want to be outdone.
With a flame lit in his heart, Inigo made the decision to jump into the fray as well. He scanned the area, identifying a few women who seemed like potential targets. However, as he looked at them, he noticed many of them staring at their group with disapproving frowns.
Undeterred, he continued his search until his eyes landed on a familiar mop of pink hair. The person with the pink hair was engaged in a conversation with two others, but Inigo didn't pay much attention to them. He quickly averted his gaze before anyone caught him staring.
Glancing back at his group, he realized that no one had noticed his lingering gaze. Taking that as a sign, he turned around and began to head back.
"Yahoh! Inigo-chan!"
Before Inigo could even take a single step, he heard the voice of the person with pink hair calling out to him. Her voice was loud and bubbly, attracting the attention of everyone around them. It was the voice of a young and lovely lady calling out specifically to him.
"Uh, Inigo, I believe that young lady is trying to get your attention," Lorenz pointed out, raising an eyebrow at Inigo's sudden sheepishness.
"Umm…"
"INIGO CHAAN! OVER HERE!"
"Wow, you really are popular today. Well, go on. You don't want to keep a lady waiting, now do you?" Sylvain remarked, also surprised by the sudden change in Inigo's luck.
Inigo let out a sigh, realizing there was no escaping it now. The men looked at him with confusion as he made his way to greet the lady who had called for him.
Walking toward the table where she sat, Inigo could feel his heart beating faster and louder in his ears with each step. The sound of his heartbeat kept him distracted from the movements of his companions, who followed behind him out of curiosity on why Inigo was behaving this way.
Heat rushed to Inigo's cheeks, causing him to blush a deep shade of crimson by the time he reached his target. He opened his mouth to speak, but all that came out was a stuttered speech, "Hello... Milady... Would you care to join me for tea?"
The young lady stared into his eyes, giving him a smug grin. "Hmm, you just couldn't get enough of me, could you, .Go. Chan?"
Inigo's face reddened even further, but his shyness prevented him from speaking clearly. "I... umm... well..."
"Hehe, you're so cute. Very well, I accept, but it's your treat," the lady replied.
"Really?!" A massive grin appeared on Inigo's face upon hearing the acceptance, but he quickly suppressed it. "I mean, I erm, yes, I suppose."
"Then it's settled! Come on, let's go! I want to go catch some goldfish. The stall is just across from here!"
The pink lady held onto Inigo's arm, catching him off guard, but he allowed himself to be dragged away from the group. Suddenly, the lady came to a sudden stop, her eyes gazing blankly into the horizon.
"Wait, seriously?! Again?! But master, I..." Her previously happy tone turned pouty, and she let out a loud sigh.
"Ahh, that's too bad. Okay then, I'm on my way," she turned toward Inigo, "Tough luck, Romeo. Your Juliet is being called by her master for some business. So our special fishy teatime will have to wait."
"Oh... alright then, I mean, right. We wouldn't want to keep you from answering Gudako's call."
The lady released Inigo's arm and turned to walk toward the castle, but not before giving a farewell wave and blowing a wink and a kiss at Inigo, who blushed at the gesture.
He stood in place for a moment, his heartbeat calmer than before, but still beating loudly. However, it was not loud enough to drown out the annoyed scoff that came from the table.
Inigo's fuzzy feelings vanished, and he turned his attention to the person who had made the noise. He nearly flinched back upon seeing a man wearing an intimidating Oni mask next to Mozart. The mask was black with crimson eyes and small horns, making it difficult to discern the man's emotions. But based on his tone of voice and posture, it was clear that he was annoyed.
"Is there a problem?" Inigo asked, trying to maintain his composure.
"As a matter of fact, there is," the masked man replied, his voice slightly muffled by his mask. "Tell me, do you or any of your companions have any pride as retainers, engaging in such disgraceful behavior?"
The knight felt the intimidating red eyes of the mask staring straight into his soul.
"What issue is there if I decide to invite a beautiful... lady to some teatime? It harms no one. What business is it of yours?" Inigo retorted, feeling a mixture of defiance and annoyance.
"It normally wouldn't concern me, and I wouldn't care if your philandering were limited to men like Astolfo. But trying to flirt with female allies will only lead to trouble and lower morale in the long run. Romantic drama is something I don't want Milady to deal with," the masked man explained.
Everyone else who had been eavesdropping, mainly Sylvain and Lorenz, were horrified when they learned the true gender of the pink lady who had called out to Inigo. They simultaneously turned their heads toward Inigo, expecting to see a look of disgust, shock, or horror at the revelation that Astolfo was a man. But to their incredulity, all they saw was Inigo's face turning scarlet red, expressing surprise rather than any negative emotion.
His surprise was not because of Astolfo being a man, but rather that this masked man was not dismissing or shaming him for flirting with men. However, Inigo's mind quickly caught up to him, and his surprise transformed into skepticism and annoyance at the ironic lecture he was receiving.
"Oh really? You don't want to bother Lady Gudako with such things? Then tell me, who is the one actively trying to 'ship' allies with each other?" Inigo deadpanned.
The masked man grunted, indicating that Inigo had a point.
"Even so, you should-" he tried to continue, but Inigo interrupted him by providing more examples. "Then there's Lady Camilla becoming obsessed with Hans Christian Andersen, the group of ladies fighting for Emiya, and don't even get me started on the mess of ladies pining for Gudao-"
"Enough. I get your point," the masked man said, his voice drawing attention from unrelated festival-goers. "The point is that as a retainer, you have a duty and a reputation to uphold. You may not care about your reputation, but your uncouth behavior reflects poorly on your Lord's."
Inigo was so engrossed in justifying his argument that he had forgotten about this aspect, as he had had similar conversations with his Lord Xander in the past, causing him to cringe at the memory of him being confined to his Lord's room like a child.
"Ah, yes... I suppose so. However-"
The man didn't allow him to present his excuse. "Furthermore, if I recall correctly, you are a married man. Have you no shame or concern for your wife?"
"She said it was okay!" Inigo reflexively responded, before coughing into his fist to regain his composure. "Besides, she said she was going to spend the festival bonding with my mother, so it's not an issue!"
"Hmph, Regardless of what you claim, your actions still bring shame to her, consent or no," the masked man scoffed, causing Inigo's blood to boil at the dismissal of his loyalty.
"I'll have you know that I have never cheated on my wife once!"
The man remained unmoved, seemingly unconvinced by his excuses. "Do not attempt to lie to me, scoundrel. I just heard you and your companions approaching every woman at this festival the moment you arrived."
"How could you even... oh, right, Heroic Spirit," Inigo said dryly.
"Yes, my enhanced hearing could pick out your voices even in this loud environment."
"Then all the more reason why you should know that all we are doing is inviting them for tea. There's nothing nefarious going on!" Inigo exclaimed as he slammed the table the man was sitting at.
"What is the point of your excursion, then?"
"Friendly competition! We ask the ladies for a cup of tea, and the first one to score the most dates has to buy drinks for the rest of the group."
The masked heroic spirit sat in silence for a while, and the surrounding crowd also fell quiet, their attention focused on the exchange. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, he spoke again. "That is the most asinine and distasteful competition I have ever heard of." He stood up from his seat, his red eyes piercing into Inigo's. "Give me a good reason why I shouldn't apprehend you now and turn you over to the Guard Post for harassing maidens."
Before Inigo could respond, a new person joined the group.
"Behold, gentlemen, for I, Sain, have secured a date with the most exquisite and lovely lady!" Sain announced, unknowingly stepping into the midst of the argument.
Everyone turned to face Sain, who had unwittingly stumbled upon a volatile situation.
"Truly, I am cursed with so much luck when it comes to the ladies."
Sain's poor choice of words caused the masked man to glare at him intensely. Even with the mask on, it was easy to sense the waves of negative energy directed at the man. It was only after hearing no one commend him on his victory when he realized what he had gotten himself into. Sensing the negativity aimed at him, Sain turned to meet the Heroic Spirit's gaze.
"What is your problem?"
"So you claim you're 'cursed' to attract the ladies eh?" Inigo felt a trickle of sweat travel down his cheek. The tone of voice sounded venomous and made his hairs stand on end. This sudden increase in hostility is something he had not expected to come from the chivalrous masked man.
"Well, yes. I am. The lovely ladies of the world just cannot help but be attracted to a dashing knight, such as myself. It can be such a pain sometimes, but I can make do." And Sain continued to run his mouth.
"If you truly were under the influence of such a curse, believe me, you wouldn't be bragging about it." the masked man told him and from his tone of voice, it almost sounds like he was speaking from experience.
Of course, Sain paid little attention to his words and came to the wrong conclusion, "Oh, yeah? Think you can do better?"
The oppressive atmosphere the man was emitting waned, and now it seemed to be mixed with hesitation, "My ability to attract maidens hardly matters."
"When it comes to the fairer sex, it always matters. You, sir, are just too much of a prude to see the beauty in asking beautiful ladies to spend an afternoon or evening with you. Why, I bet that must be the reason why you are hanging around this dark corner talking to another man rather than a lady," Sain retorted, turning to Mozart. "No offense, friend," he added.
Mozart shook his head. "No offense taken... however, I believe it is my friend Diarmuid here who you should be more wary of offending," Mozart said.
"Oh? And why do you say that?" Sain asked, "If it has to do with that spirit magic stuff you guys are made of, I'm not impressed,"
"Mozart, don't-" Mozart interrupted Diarmuid with an open palm.
"He can easily make any woman swoon the moment they look at his face, or in more romantic words, he has the power to cause women to fall in love with him at first sight!"
The men present were skeptical of the claim, but considering they were talking about Heroic Spirits, anything was possible. Among them, Inigo was the only one lost in thought. When he heard those words, a memory clicked into place. It was a memory of a conversation with Lady Corrin about her exploits in Chaldea and a certain Heroic Spirit whom she absolutely despised upon meeting him. A man who had the power to sway a woman's heart and twist it into affection towards himself.
The concept was unbelievable, but it was a horrifying one. Could this man be the same one Lady Corrin had told him about?
"Is this true?" Sain asked, completely oblivious to Inigo's thoughts.
"... Unfortunately, yes," Diarmuid reluctantly admitted.
"Prove it!" Sylvain yelled from behind Sain.
Diarmuid took a deep breath before looking at all of them with the gaze of a fighter. "If it means I can discredit your pathetic excuse for fun, then yes, I'll prove it. But on one condition: if my skill does not fail, you will all have to quit philandering for the rest of the night."
"What's in it for us?" Sylvain said, crossing his arms. "You're asking us to deal with heavy stakes here with no payoff. What do we get?"
"If my skill fails, then on my pride as a knight, I vow to never bother you about this issue again."
"That doesn't seem fair."
"If you wish, I could simply take you all down here and now and turn you over to the authorities. I am more than capable of holding my own against philandering sloths." Diarmuid's voice was serious, causing the rest of the men to tense. But before Sylvain could talk back, Lorenz held him back and shook his head.
"Fine. We promise-"
"No. You will VOW to your lords and ladies that you will all retire for the night," Diarmuid interrupted.
"I see no issue with this arrangement, and I would much rather end this conflict peacefully, like a proper noble." Lorenz turned to Diarmuid. "I vow upon House Gloucester, The Leicester Alliance, and my pride as a Noble that if Diarmuid is able to make any woman swoon over him with a glance, I, Lorenz Hellman Gloucester, will retire to my room for the night." Lorenz's words flowed effortlessly.
Diarmuid nodded in approval. "It is nice to see that you are not all savages desperate to seek a maiden's attention."
Everyone reluctantly gave their voices of approval.
"Good. Now that we have all our ducks in a line, go ahead and show us that power of yours," Sain said smugly, "unless, of course, you just made us go through all those theatrics for nothing."
"Patience is a virtue. We must not push an issue but rather wait and seek the proper opportunity before striking," Diarmuid advised.
Sain rolled his eyes, but they quickly widened in disbelief when Diarmuid revealed his face, his astonishingly handsome face.
"Unfortunately for me, the philosophies of my spearmanship do not apply when dealing with women. As you shall now witness."
From the corner of his eye, Inigo caught sight of light blue hair approaching. He wasn't the only one, as a few people had also heard the familiar voice of his daughter getting closer.
"Man, I was so close!" All eyes turned to the voice of his daughter, and a primal fear gripped the pit of Inigo's stomach. "I had her talking about stuff, and she admitted she would have been willing to go on a date if I wasn't a gir-"
Paternal instinct kicked in and Inigo tried to move to intercept, but it was too late.
His daughter, his adorable little girl whom he had watched grow up from a young age, who claimed she wanted to steal her mother away from him and marry her, was now staring directly at the face of a man who could twist the hearts of women into loving him.
Inigo's breath caught as he watched his daughter's face flush like that of a delicate maiden, only for the image to shatter when her lips curled into a sultry grin that she usually reserved for the village girls. Then, she opened her mouth and said something he never expected to hear her say directed at a man.
"Hey there, hot stuff. Want to join me for some tea?"
Silence fell.
Soleil, the tomboyish girl who was so vocal about her love of women that even the biggest flirts in the army saw her as one of the guys, had become infatuated with man within literal seconds of laying eyes on him.
Was this the gods' way of punishing Inigo for his philandering ways? For seeking excuses to continue flirting even with his wife's flimsy consent?
Even Soleil herself seemed bewildered by what had come out of her mouth. "Wha... I mean... how?"
The dastard who had stolen his daughter's heart let out a sigh and pointed to his mole. "Apologies, milady, this mole is the reason why you feel towards me. It releases charm magic that makes any woman who gazes upon it fall for me, regardless of their usual taste in men... or women. As long as that person is a woman, they will always fall for me.
"Friends, family, it doesn't matter. I cannot remove it or turn it off by myself, which is why I am wearing this mask. It is a literal curse that has haunted me for life and it was what ultimately ended my life." He explained this before putting the Oni mask back on his face, eliciting groans of disappointment from the ladies around them.
Inigo was astonished to see that every woman around them was now gazing at Diarmuid with flushed faces, while many of their husbands and male loved ones scowled at the man for the havoc he had unleashed.
Of all his companions, the rest of the group stared at Diarmuid with conflicting expressions of disgust and sympathy on their faces, and Inigo understood why.
Diarmuid's power invalidated their efforts to win a woman's heart through genuine effort and perseverance. It was the antithesis of true love as it forced the victim of its effects to love the owner of this foul magic, and it was a power that any man would envy. Yet, in the end, it had cost Diarmuid his life, a truly horrendous curse. From the guilt-ridden look on Sain's face, it seemed he realized the weight of it as well.
Before anyone could say anything, Diarmuid spoke in a monotone voice, "I believe our contract has been fulfilled. I trust you will follow through with your end of the deal. I'll be watching." And just like that, he vanished from their view.
An awkward silence hung in the air for a moment. The festive atmosphere had been shattered by their confrontation, leaving Inigo and the rest of the group devoid of the energy to continue their flirtatious pursuits. They decided to honor their vows and retire for the night.
Suddenly, a loud screech from a microphone jolted everyone out of their stupor. It was like a gust of wind blowing away the dense fog that had enveloped them, revealing the bright stage lights ahead.
"Oh dear," Inigo turned to Mozart, who was now looking in the direction of the lights, his face growing paler by the second.
"Apologies, gentlemen, but I must take my leave," Mozart said abruptly, leaving everyone confused.
"If you still wish to hear your loved ones tomorrow, I suggest you do the same."
Without offering further explanation, he followed in Diarmuid's footsteps and departed by disappearing into the ether.
Author's Note: As you can see from the end of this chapter, this is not the end of the festival event. My burnout has been extinguished and it has come with the added benefit of having a few ideas of how to continue this mini festival arc. I've taken the feedback from Spacebattlers to heart and have been trying my best to flesh out more of the existing cast so that the story feels a bit more alive than just introducing handfuls of new characters every chapter without revisiting old ones.
Also, in terms of job hunting, I have received a verbal job offer at a really cool company here in the bay area. I accepted it of course, but I haven't gotten the written offer yet. Gonna send an email to HR on Monday and hopefully if all goes well, I will start training on July 10th, which would mean I could have 1 month of stress free Free Time to write. Job hunting and pressure to get a job has been fueling my burnout the past year, so this development has given me immense relief. However, I'm not going to get too excited since it could still fall through and I could still be out of a job. I learned from my previous mistake.
Anywhoo, thanks again for reading and be sure to leave some feedback or comments if you liked it. I had a blast writing it.
