Chapter 65

The year progressed and both Tomoeh and Rae grew heavier with the pregnancies. Embry Sr. remained a frequent visitor to keep track of Rae and how she was feeling. After she reached a certain point, Caevia insisted on remaining with the Makka tribe until Rae gave birth. She brought Grae and Aiya with her, but the remaining children stayed home with Embry Sr. and Aidetzi predominantly looking after the children. When it was finally summer, Rae was the first to start experiencing labor. It was late May, so she was a little early and the Cullens had not arrived as of yet. They weren't expected until the beginning of June. She went into labor near the middle of the night and Caevia, who had been staying with Rae and Toroeh, was the first besides Toroeh to be by her side. Toroeh went to get their Healer and he monitored Rae's condition intermittently, encouraging her to walk whenever possible until the contractions were increasingly closer together. While a rather inopportune time, Rae and Toroeh began discussing baby names. They'd discussed it before, but could never seem to think of a name they liked at all. Caevia helped with the process. By the time the baby was finally born, the Healer was cleaning up the baby and handed the baby, a little boy, to Rae. The little boy looked so unique. She could see her features and Toroeh's features equally in his face and he looked so much like his own person.

"I think I know what we can name him," Rae said to Toroeh.

"What's that?" he asked with a smile.

"Ren," Rae said.

"Ren?" Toroeh asked.

"Yeah," Rae smiled. "Ren Call. He looks like a Ren don't you think?" Toroeh was hesitant initially, but looked at their son a little more closely. He really didn't look specifically like him or like Rae, but rather, a perfect combination of the two.

"So like the bird?"

"Yeah, but we'll spell it R-E-N instead of W-R-E-N."

"How about we spell it W-R-E-N? I like that spelling."

Rae thought about it and smiled. "Alright. Wren. I like it."

"I do too," Toroeh said.

Embry finally made it the following day early in the morning, mere minutes after Wren was born. He and Caevia remained with them for a few more days getting to know their first grandson. There was a calm that followed, but the calm was rather brief. Just two weeks later, Tomoeh found she had gone into labor. Days prior, she was having a number of pains on and off throughout the days and, wanting to keep an eye on her and make sure she was alright, Nathan remained home with her and did not go on patrol at night. Renesmee also visited frequently to check on Tomoeh. She determined, initially, that she was not yet fully in labor. She was just experiencing practice labor. However, the 'practice' didn't last very long. Eventually, Renesmee was able to determine that Tomoeh's water would break soon and suggested that she walk around in the bedroom to encourage her water to break. Renesmee remained at Nathan's and Tomoeh's home to monitor her and make sure everything went smoothly.

Tomoeh insisted she wanted fresh air, so she often walked on the small balcony with Nathan holding her close for stability. Roxanne laid on the bed most of the process, frequently coming and going as she always did, but she was never gone for very long. When Tomoeh's water did finally break, Nathan helped Tomoeh to the bed and sat behind her as Renesmee had instructed. Roxanne sat beside Tomoeh as a way of helping calm her. Sometimes she'd start licking Tomoeh's hand or wrist in an effort to offer comfort. It was strange to Nathan to see Roxanne being so attentive. She was usually so aloof. Hours passed with contractions coming and going with different lengths and intensities until she suffered a consistent and horrible pain. That was her queue to start pushing. Renesmee encouraged Tomoeh through the whole process and, finally, with two and a half good pushes, their daughter was born.

"Our Little Red Tree's a girl," Tomoeh smiled.

"Scarlet Willow it is," Nathan smiled back and kissed Tomoeh's cheek. "She looks a lot like you."

"Do you think so?" Tomoeh asked.

"I do," Nathan said. "She's got your nose."

"She has your eyes," Tomoeh said and gently rubbed Scarlet's cheek. She opened her eyes just a bit, allowing them to see black eyes before she closed them again and began fusing to be fed, which Tomoeh attended to. "She certainly has your appetite," Tomoeh giggled and proceeded to feed Scarlet.

It was told to Kyle and Kevin that night that their new niece, Scarlet Willow, was born. They made the trip the following Friday evening and arrived by Saturday morning to meet the baby. When they arrived, Scarlet was sound asleep snuggled up to Tomoeh. Tomoeh and Nathan would take turns holding Scarlet and they would pass her around to anyone that wanted to see her. She was a very good baby. She only cried, so it seemed, when she needed something, otherwise she was asleep. She also had a quiet cry. Her room, which Emmett, Jasper, Esme, Alice and Rosalie got dolled up for her, was not currently being used because it was hard to hear her from the other room. Scarlet's crib was in the master bedroom so, if she ever cried, Tomoeh would hear her and be able to attend to her. Roxanne had gotten into the habit of sleeping next to the crib as if keeping watch of Scarlet. And if Nathan or Tomoeh were holding Scarlet, Roxanne was always close by and would start licking Scarlet's hand if she started crying. During their visit, Kevin and Kyle went to the Makka tribe to visit Rae and see her son Wren. Wren was a more fussy baby. He did not like being passed around and would cry until he was returned to Rae.

Wanting to meet his other grandchild, Tokoruchei requested that Nathan and Tomoeh make the trip to the Makka tribe with Scarlet Willow. She was well received by her grandma and grandpa. They also appreciated that she wasn't quite so fussy about being held as Wren frequently was. As long as Rae was close, he could be alright, but he would start crying if she wasn't near. While Kyle remained home for the summer, Kevin sadly needed to return back east. He needed to make sure he got as much work done as possible before leaving for Germany. Olga had proven to be a huge help to them. She kept things in order and had a special touch with their clients that always managed to keep them calm and cordial over the phone. The same couldn't always be said about when Kevin or Alphonse was speaking to them face to face, however people's dispositions tend to change when money or reality of a legal situation is involved. Kevin brought up to Alphonse the possibility of offering Olga the opportunity to come work with them when they started up their business in Washington. Alphonse agreed to the idea, but offered the possibility that perhaps she could assist with promotion. They agreed this was something they would need to discuss more in depth later. Then, it was came to be the day before Kevin's boat was scheduled to depart.

"So I'll hand everything over to Alphonse while you're gone, correct?" Olga said as she was straightening out some appointment cards.

"Yes," Kevin nodded. "I should have gotten everything manageable for him while I'm gone. If it gets to be too much, we'll see what else you can help with short of actual legal advising."

"Just let me know and I'll do the best I can," Olga smiled. "So you're going to Germany to visit a young lady, correct?"

"Yes," Kevin smiled. "Amber."

"That was her name," Olga smiled. "She must be a wonderful woman to have had such an effect on you."

"She is," Kevin nodded.

"That picture on your desk is of her right? She is very pretty."

"Yes, that's her. She's with her mother and father, but she's the one with light hair."

"Yes, I remember you saying she's blonde. So do you plan to bring her to America any time soon?"

"It'll have to be later, I'm afraid. It just wouldn't be practical for her to come here right now. Once she's completed her schooling, then we'll start talking with her parents about her coming here. Maybe her parents coming as well, but one thing at a time."

"I must say I envy you being able to go to Germany so frequently."

"I can't go nearly so often as I'd like," Kevin said. "Besides, what I can spend isn't cheap. Were it not for the fact that I share a house with my brother that's already long paid for, I wouldn't be able to afford to go."

"Well, at least you're good at horse racing so I hear," Olga teased with a giggle.

"Lucky flukes, I assure you," Kevin chuckled.

"Well, I hope you enjoy your trip," Olga smiled.

Kevin thanked Olga and returned to his work before leaving for the day. He got a chance to see Anastasia before leaving and reminded her to work hard while he was gone. Anastasia giggled and said she would and Kevin returned home. All his things were already packed for his trip and he locked up the house before making the run for the harbor in New York. He spent the night at a hotel near the harbor and boarded the ship as soon as passengers were allowed to. The trip to Le Havre was a two day trip in which Kevin spent a lot of time talking to people on the ship. He discovered a client of one of his coworkers on board and spoke with him several times through the trip, even being invited to have dinner with him and his wife.

When the boat landed in France, there was a night he spent at an inn near the harbor before the train finally left for Berlin, Germany. He arrived midday and, with his luggage in tow, made the walk to the candle shop. When he arrived, the shop was open and there was an influx of customers, undoubtedly from another wedding rush for the season. There were rows and rows of unity candles in the window on display with varying colors mixed in with the bold white in swirls and curls on both the large candle and the two tapers. Amber was at the register wrapping some candles while Anna manned the register. Kevin smiled and waited for Amber to notice him. Eventually she did, and her smile brightened. Kevin Smiled wider and went around the shop to the side where the entrance to the house was. He found the hidden key and unlocked the door to let himself in before replacing the key to its hiding place and walking into the house and locking the door behind him. Amber was still in the front and the door was closed, so Kevin walked upstairs to the guest room to put away his luggage. Once Kevin had his things settled, he heard footsteps coming up the stairs. By the time he turned around, Amber was already in the room and leaped into his arms wrapping her arms around his neck.

"I missed you," Amber said and Kevin double checked the hall before kissing her neck just a moment.

"I missed you too," he said. "I'm sorry to interrupt you while you guys are so busy."

"Don't worry about it," Amber shook her head and pulled away so she could look at him. "I'll get back down there in just a moment. I just wanted to welcome you."

"Well," Kevin smiled and leaned down for a quick kiss, "I feel very welcomed."

"Good," Amber smiled back and kissed him again. "Before I get back to work, are you hungry? Do you want anything?"

"I'm alright, but thank you," Kevin kissed her one more time. "You get back downstairs. I'll be alright."

"Are you sure?" Amber asked.

"Yeah, I'm sure."

"I promise, the crowd should calm down in another hour. We've just been having so many rushes for the wedding season."

"No worries," Kevin said. "Don't leave your mom alone too long."

Amber smiled and finally let go of him before walking out of the room. Kevin found something to read and walked downstairs just as Amber walked back into the shop. Kevin sat in the living room reading for a few hours while Amber worked. As he was reading, the side door opened and Levi walked in.

"Oh, Kevin," Levi said. "How long have you been here?"

"I just arrived an hour or so ago. The shop got really busy, so I'm just keeping out of the way."

"Alright," Levi said. "I'd offer to take you to the beer hall, but I have work tomorrow."

"I imagine that's the least of the concerns," Kevin joked and Levi chuckled.

"Yes, Anna wasn't thrilled with me," Levi said. "She said that if you and I go out drinking, I'm only allowed two or three drinks."

"Well, that's not very fun," Kevin laughed. "But if Anna insists, then I guess I'll keep it to no more than three."

"That'll make Anna happy," Levi said and walked over to take a seat in the chair beside the couch. "So how was your trip?"

"Productive," Kevin said. "A client of a coworker was on the boat with me and I got a chance to speak with him."

"I assume business is going well?"

"Very well," Kevin nodded. "Business is flourishing and so is the legal need. My law firm predominantly handles business related cases, but I'd love to branch out into other cases. Mr. Huntington isn't so interested, though."

"I suppose until you have your own firm, what the boss says goes, am I right?"

"Alphonse and I are still working on that," Kevin nodded with a smile.

"How long before you suppose you two can take the plunge?"

"After my brother graduates," Kevin said. "So not for another 4 years at least. Maybe 5. Medical school takes much longer than a legal degree."

"At least he's attending University for free, correct?"

"Yes," Kevin nodded.

"So has anything else happened? Your brother got married did he not?"

"Yes, he did, and he and his wife have already had a baby. My first niece, Scarlet Willow."

"That's unique," Levi chuckled.

"She's a cute little thing," Kevin smiled. "She's only a month old now."

"That's exciting," Levi smiled. "Are your parents excited about being grandparents?"

"Very," Kevin nodded. "My mom's side of the family is especially excited. They love it when a new baby joins the family."

"That's always a joyous occasion," Levi agreed. "How fairs your personal life?"

Kevin smiled awkwardly, "Friendly. I'm sorry to disappoint you."

Levi chuckled, "It's alright. You're still young. You turn 22 this year don't you?"

"Yes," Kevin nodded.

"Oh, you have plenty of time," Levi waved his hand dismissively. "It's better for you to focus on your career for now. Between you and me, I sometimes wish I'd been able to develop my career a little more before Anna and I got married. Though since we didn't have a child for so long, the point was moot. All the same, give yourself time to establish a business before looking into getting married. It'll be better to marry once you're back home anyway. It's always difficult to try and move someone that's established somewhere else." There was an awkward moment before Kevin forced a smile and nodded.

"That's true," he finally managed. "What if I do fall in love with a woman that's far away from home?"

"I suppose if she's worth marrying, then you make it work," Levi said, unaware what Kevin was referring to. "Are you saying there's someone you're interested in?"

"Not now," Kevin lied.

"Then don't worry about it now," Levi offered. "And don't let my asking or Anna asking make you feel pressure. When you meet the right woman, you'll know."

"I know," Kevin smiled knowingly. Just then, Amber walked through the door into the house with a sigh. She was initially surprised to see Levi but then realized the time.

"How was work, daddy?" Amber asked, walking over and kissing his cheek.

"Just fine, Amber. I see the shop was busy again today."

"Brides," Amber said bluntly. "I spoke to a bride today that came two four towns over just to buy her unity candles and another woman that wanted a carved pink and white candle for each of her tables."

"Last year, a bride wanted your soaps on each table right?"

"Yes," Amber nodded. "That's actually this woman's cousin. She saw the soaps and loved them, so she wanted her own but she liked the candles better."

"The candles are more expensive right?" Kevin asked.

"Yes, they are, so mom was really happy," Amber smiled. "We got an order today too for some soaps today for a baby shower."

"That'll be nice," Kevin smiled.

"It will," Amber nodded. "The mother to be asked for soaps of little birds in nests. Thankfully, I have a month to get all those done."

"What color will they be?" Levi asked.

"White," Amber answered. "Something that won't be indicative of any specific gender."

"What kind of bird?"

"She didn't specify," Amber shrugged. "Just a tiny bird in a nest."

"That'll be cute," Levi said. "The shop's closed for the night?"

"Mom's closing up now," Amber said. The door opened again and Anna walked back, once again appearing surprised that Levi was there until she realized what time it was.

"Oh, Levi, I'm so sorry about dinner," Anna said.

"No, Anna, it's alright," Levi said. "Since Kevin's arrived, why don't we all go out to dinner? We've all had a long day and I think we've earned some peace and quiet."

"That sounds lovely," Anna nodded. "Amber, dear, go upstairs and get dressed appropriately." Amber went upstairs and Anna followed.

"You'd best get dressed too," Levi said. While Levi was already in a suit, Kevin was in something a little more casual for travel.

"I'll get dressed appropriately," Kevin smiled and went upstairs to the guest room to dress into a nice suit. He got back downstairs first and waited with Levi for Amber and Anna to come downstairs.

The two of them finally came down. Amber wore a lacey purple and black dress that went just below her knees, but she wore stockings upon Anna's insistence while Anna wore a more traditional but tighter fitting mahogany dress. Levi smiled at them both and walked over to the staircase to take Anna's hand. He told her and Amber they both looked beautiful and complimented Anna a little more. Kevin got up from the couch and went over to Amber. He smiled at her and she smiled back.

"You look so grown up," Kevin said quietly.

"Is that it?" Amber said just as quietly. Kevin glanced quickly at Anna and Levi to be sure they were focusing on one another and when he was sure, he looked at Amber again and winked.

"You look beautiful," Kevin whispered. Amber blushed and smiled.

"We'd better go while there's still seats open," Levi said mostly to Anna and they all walked to a cabaret in town. Sadly, it didn't have a piano like the place they'd taken Kevin back in Munich, but it was beautiful none the less.

Levi and Kevin had some wine together, but Anna ensured neither of them exceeded one glass. Amber ordered a soup so she could just let everyone have a little of it and those that were eating enjoyed their dinner while also enjoying a show. They stayed for coffee as well before walking back to the shop to turn in for the night. Kevin said goodnight to everyone before everyone went to their respective rooms. While Kevin was in his room, he started getting ready for bed when he heard a gentle knock at the door. He went to the door and opened to Amber, still in her fancy dress.

"You don't plan to sleep in that do you?" Kevin teased.

"I hadn't planned on it," Amber giggled. "But I barely got to see you today. You just arrived and I've been busy all day leaving you all by yourself."

"Levi kept me entertained," Kevin smiled. "When was the last you'd fed?"

"Not long ago, so I'm alright," Amber said. "I was actually wanting to start on those little birds. Did you want to join me?"

"Of course," Kevin said. "I'll meet you downstairs."

Amber smiled and left the room to return to her own. Kevin stayed dressed in his suit save for the jacket and went downstairs to the candle carving room. He saw a large wall of white soaps that seemed to be meant specifically for the baby shower. When Amber finally came downstairs, she was in something a lot more casual. She was in a silk tank top and a loose fitting skirt that looked like it typically required a belt.

"So," Amber said as she grabbed her tools and the soap. "Tell me what's going on. How is Nathan? He's the one that got married right? They were expecting a child?"

"They've had her," Kevin nodded and Amber sat down and started to work. "They had a daughter last month. Scarlet Willow."

"That's a cute name," Amber smiled. "What does she look like?" Kevin pushed a memory of Scarlet into Amber's mind and she smiled. "She's cute," she said.

"She is. I didn't get to see her for long, but she's a good baby. Very well behaved."

"I assume you mean she doesn't cry much," Amber smiled.

"When she does, it's really quiet."

"I'll bet your brother and sister-in-law love that," Amber giggled. "How are Alphonse and Ana?"

"Tolerating each other," Kevin answered bluntly. "Anastasia's doing great. She's turning two and she's already talking a little. We've been calling her Alphonse's 'Executive Assistant'. Our new assistant Olga answers to her," Kevin joked and Amber giggled again.

"Does she still get a salary in candy?"

"Yes, but she's been requesting a raise," Kevin said.

"I assume Olga's new?"

"Yes, she started in January. She's been doing really well, so I'm glad we hired her. We're considering asking her to come with us to Washington once we start up that business."

"That's very kind," Amber said.

"She even speaks German," Kevin said. "She was born in Austria and her family came to America when the war broke out."

"Really?" Amber asked. "How old is she?"

"Twenty," Kevin said. "You'd like her. She's a nice girl."

"I'm sure," Amber smiled and finished up one of the birds. "What do you think?"

"It's adorable," Kevin smiled. "I think she'll love them."

"I hope so," Amber smiled and put the bird on the table. "I need to get little bags for them so they won't get damaged in their box."

"Did you want to do that tomorrow?"

"We'll see how busy the shop is," Amber said, then smiled guiltily. "I feel awful. I've been looking forward to your visit and here I am working the whole time."

"It's alright, Amber," Kevin smiled. "In fact, I can help out if you want. You don't even have to pay me. I'll work for room and food, how about that?"

Amber laughed a little, "I'll ask mom. Maybe you can help her manage the front while I work on these birds. The sooner I get these done, the more time I can spend with you."

"I'd offer to help you with that, but I have no confidence in my ability to carve soap quite so masterfully as you."

"You did well on my bracelet, so soap should be a synch," Amber teased and glanced at her bracelet. "Speaking of the bracelet, you did get my answer right?"

"I did," Kevin smiled. "How do you like it?"

"I love it," Amber smiled back. With her soap she was working on still in hand, Amber stood from her stool and walked over to Kevin, sitting on his lap. Kevin chuckled and helped her get comfortable. When she was, she returned to carving the soap. Kevin's hands went to Amber's hip and her knee, but he never rose or lowered either hand any further. "You made it yourself right?"

"Yes," Kevin smiled.

"How did you make it?"

"I carved a cuttlebone and pressed shells into that and got a link for it from a jeweler. So I had a little help. Although, there's nothing in tradition that says you can't enlist assistance for the bracelet to ensure it's perfect. So long as you made it and it's from the heart."

Amber blushed. "I love it," she repeated and leaned down to give Kevin a kiss. "Mom and daddy still don't know. Mom assumed it was a Christmas present."

"Well, it did get here around that time," Kevin smiled.

"She said she would love for you to spend Hanukkah with us," Amber said. "I just wish that didn't mean I had to choose between seeing you in summer or seeing you in winter."

"My little brother should complete his schooling in another four or five years. Once he's done that, we're all going back to Washington and Alphonse will join so we can start our business. Once we have things off the ground, I imagine I can make more frequent trips."

"How long before that, though?" Amber asked sadly. "Seven years? Maybe six? By then I'll have completed my schooling and we'll have more important things to worry about, like telling my parents about us."

"You're right," Kevin said.

"Besides, I imagine your mother would be upset if I made you come to Germany around that time. That's supposed to be when you get to go see the family. They all see you so rarely now."

"It's alright," Kevin said and gently stroked Amber's hip.

"No it's not," Amber sighed. "I wish we could all spend the winter together. Hanukkah is before Christmas, so you can spend that time with us and then we could spend Christmas with your family." Amber completed her second bird and was staring at it in her lap. "I wonder if one year I could convince daddy to let me visit you in America."

"I wouldn't think so," Kevin shook his head. "He'd at least want your mother to join you and with the business, that's just not possible. Besides, I'd be at work all day. I work long hours. It's not uncommon for me to remain at the office well after dusk or late into the night depending on the case I'm working on."

"Yes, but you could take time off," Amber said.

"It would have to wait until next year, then," Kevin said. "All my time off gets used up when I make these trips to Germany."

"I suppose," Amber sighed. Then she leaned her head against Kevin's shoulder and Kevin wrapped both his arms around Amber's waist in a hug. "This will get easier eventually, right?"

"Don't worry," Kevin smiled. "It'll get easier. We'll just have to be a little patient."

"I don't like being patient," Amber said and Kevin chuckled.

"I don't either, Amber."

Amber couldn't help a mutual giggle at Kevin's comment. He patted her on the back and Amber got off Kevin's lap to get more soaps to carve then returned to Kevin's lap to sit. She carved three more bird before Kevin convinced her they should get to bed. Amber arranged the completed birds in a line like little soldiers and Kevin walked her upstairs to her room. It was late and Kevin could hear her parents' shallow breathing, but he kept his voice in a low whisper.

"Good night, Amber," Kevin smiled. "I'll help you guys with the shop tomorrow so you can focus on those birds, okay?"

"That's very sweet of you, Kevin," Amber smiled. "Do you suppose while you're visiting, we can go to the Jazz club with my friends again? Or maybe just the two of us?"

"We'll invite your friends," Kevin said with the slightest hint of regret. "I doubt we'd get away with just us going."

"My parents don't know about us," Amber said.

"No, but just us going out would look suspicious. And if we tried to lie, I've no doubt they'd find out. Better to remain cautious for now. Have you told Gertrude or Dahlia about us?"

"No," Amber said. "They don't know. They may suspect, though."

"Why do you say that?"

"Well, you visit once a year, you send me gifts and jewelry like this bracelet and….I've admitted to them I have feelings for you. They haven't said anything, though. I know they haven't."

"So they're coming to their own conclusion?" Kevin asked.

"Essentially," Amber nodded. "In truth, it wouldn't surprise me if they just assumed you and I were seeing one another to some capacity. I look about their age and by that logic, they would think you're only 5 years my senior. Were it not for the fact you're not Jewish, any other mother might be handing me over with a pretty pink bow."

Kevin chuckled, "I don't know about that, but I imagine it would make things simpler wouldn't it?" Amber smiled and looked down while Kevin stayed silent just a moment. "Will it help if I convert?"

"It's not so simple as that I'm afraid. You have to get blessings from the Rabi, you have to be re-baptized and that's only if the Rabi approves your conversion. You also need to get circumcised." Kevin shook just momentarily and went a little stiff. Amber tried not to giggle, but a little escaped her lips. "From what understanding I have, it's not pleasant in the least."

"No, I imagine it's not," Kevin shuddered.

"Isn't this becoming rather common in America, though?"

"As far as I'm aware, yes, but it has nothing to do with religion. According to Kevin, there has been propaganda to stop young men from masturbating and it's assumed that circumcision is the answer."

"Is that true?" Amber asked.

"No," Kevin laughed almost condescendingly. "Kyle knows a few Jewish men from his classes and they're all circumcised, but they do it all the same. It does nothing to reduce masturbating."

"Good to know," Amber laughed a little awkwardly.

"Sorry, I shouldn't have brought that up," Kevin smiled. "Point is it's becoming mainstream in America because of effective propaganda."

"Never underestimate good propaganda I suppose," Amber said. "I guess my point is you don't have to. I know what it will require and for someone your age, that's not really fair. So don't worry about it. I'll love whether you're a Jew or a gentile."

Kevin chuckled and leaned down to give Amber a quick kiss. "I'll remember that." Amber smiled and kissed Kevin back, wrapping her arms around his neck to prolong the kiss before pulling away to rest her head against his chest. "You get some sleep, okay, Amber?"

"You too," Amber said. "I love you."

"I love you too," Kevin said and kissed Amber's head. Then he let her go and returned her to her feet to walk away. "Good night, Amber."

"Good night, Kevin," Amber smiled and retreated into her room while Kevin returned to the guest room. He finally undressed for the night and went to bed but he spent most of the night thinking about Amber.

The next morning, Kevin woke up to the sun in his eyes. He had to remember to close those blinds! Though he realized it was a suitable sign that he should get out of bed. He got up and picked out his clothes for the day. As he was getting dressed, he heard a gentle knock at the door. Amber announced she was the one at the door and Kevin invited her in. Once she was inside, she very nearly closed the door behind her but didn't seal the latch. She walked over while Kevin finished buttoning his shirt.

"How did you sleep?" Kevin asked.

"I slept well. How did you sleep?"

"Very well," Kevin smiled. "Is the shop open?"

"Not for another hour," Amber shook her head. "Mom and daddy are downstairs already. Mom's working on breakfast but the coffee's ready now."

"Coffee sounds nice," Kevin said. "What's for breakfast?"

"Some bread and jam," Amber said. "Mother baked the bread fresh this morning."

"Did she really?" Kevin asked. "How early did she get up?"

"Early," Amber giggled. "So make sure to tell her it's the best bread you've ever had."

"I'll do just that," Kevin smiled. "What kind of jam?" Kevin asked after finishing the last button and walking closer to Amber.

"Elderberry I think," Amber said.

"I can't say I've had that."

"It's daddy's favorite. Mom is more partial to apple, but she likes elderberry just fine."

"Did you have a chance to ask your mother about me helping?"

"She said the gesture is greatly appreciated," Amber smiled. "With any luck, I'll have that order of birds finished by the afternoon and if there's enough time we'll go get some little bags for them so they'll be safe in the box."

"Are there any other orders you'll need to work on?"

"A few tapers and unity candles, but mom has been pretty on top of that. She's been working on them largely on Sundays after we get home from the synagogue. You're going with us on Sunday, right?"

"I always do," Kevin smiled and gave Amber a kiss. "Assuming we're able to, while we're out getting those linen bags, we can go for a walk in the park."

"I would love that," Amber smiled. "I'm scared I'll barely get to see you while you're here."

"We'll ensure that doesn't happen, don't you worry," Kevin said and kissed Amber again. "Let's get downstairs for breakfast," he said before standing tall and walking out of the guest room.

By the time they got downstairs, the bread was toasted and the jam was out with big mugs of coffee already filled. After tasting the bread, Kevin affirmed for Anna it was the best bread he'd ever had and Anna blushed and thanked him. After breakfast and after Levi left for work, Amber went to the candle room and got to work right away on the birds. Kevin, on the other hand, went up front with Anna and opened shop. He assisted with anything she requested, typically the register and packing once Anna showed him how to do it. They weren't so swamped in the morning. It didn't pick up until the afternoon. A several brides came in to retrieve their orders, one came in to check on her order, and two came in requesting to update their order. A few people came in to buy candles or soaps as birthday presents and there were a handful of people that came in to buy themselves a nice decorative piece. When it finally slowed down around three, Anna assured Kevin she could handle the rest of the day on her own and told him to check on how Amber was doing. Kevin went to the candle room and saw row after row of carved birds in nests. When he walked in, Amber was delicately finishing a bird.

"How is everything?" Amber asked when she realized Kevin had walked into the room.

"It's finally slowed down," Kevin said. "Anna asked me to check how you were doing."

"I'm almost done," Amber said. "I have a few more to do before I'm done. Do you suppose mother will be alright if we go out and buy those bags?"

"She said she'd be alright for the remainder of the afternoon," Kevin said.

"Okay, good," Amber said. "Afternoons are typically shorter." Amber finished the bird she was working on and placed it in the row.

"They look beautiful," Kevin praised.

"I hope so," Amber said. "It'll be a while before I'll be able to stand seeing a bird in a nest ever again," Amber joked.

"I know what you mean," Kevin smiled. Kevin brought a free stool closer to Amber and watched her carve. In another twenty minutes, she finished the last of the birds and placed the final one in the row with an almost exasperated sigh.

"There," she said. "Done."

"They're all perfect," Kevin said. "I'm sure the mother to be will love them."

With the soap birds completed, Amber went up front to check on Anna who confirmed she was able to handle the shop herself for the remainder of the day and to go ahead and get the linen bags for the little birds and a bigger box. They didn't have one in the shop big enough for all those birds. Kevin and Amber walked up the road together to the shop that sold what Amber needed and bought a linen bag for each individual bird as well as a large black box to keep all the birds in. Once they had what they needed, the two of them walked to the park together and sat on a bench. Amber just needed a moment to do nothing.

"I can't wait for this season to be over," Amber sighed. "The only other time we're this busy is during Christmas and Hanukkah."

"I suspect every Jewish family in Berlin has your carved candles?" Kevin joked.

"Not all, but most at our synagogue do," Amber smiled. "They're all blue, white and silver. The middle candle is the flashiest out of them. One year, a woman from our synagogue ordered three sets to send to her daughter, her daughter's in-laws, and some family that had moved to England."

"If this keeps up, you and Anna may need to open up another store," Kevin smiled.

"I don't know where we would," Amber smiled back. "Maybe we could open one in Munich. Or Hamburg. I hear Hamburg is nice."

"I can't say I've ever been," Kevin said.

"Maybe we'll go some day," Amber replied.

"I would love to take you to Paris," Kevin said. "You'd love it there. The city was beautiful, even during war. Imagine how beautiful it must be during a time of peace."

"I hear wonderful things about Paris," Amber grinned. "Mom and daddy went to Paris a few times when they were making arrangements to adopt me. Mom says they went there on holiday once too and had loved it."

"I've been there twice and both times it was too brief. I was only there long enough to spend the night before being sent to the front or being sent to Le Havre to go home."

"I remember Le Havre," Amber smiled. "That was a nice little town. I wish we could have seen each other then before you'd gotten on the boat."

"Me too," Kevin said. "But even if all we could do was wave goodbye, seeing you really brightened my spirits."

"It brightened mine too," Amber nodded. "What's it like being on a boat?"

"Depends on the weather," Kevin answered and earned a quick giggle from Amber. "No, I'm serious. If the skies are clear and there aren't any icebergs then it's nice but if there are icebergs or it's storming, it's a nightmare. Both times we were on the boats, Embry got really sea sick."

"Oh no," Amber smiled. "I assume he doesn't like sailing then?"

"Sailing wasn't so bad, especially when we were kids and we went whale watching with my grandpa."

"Whale watching?" Amber asked, at full attention now.

"Yeah, whale watching. It's when you go out on the water to get close to whales when they're migrating. We've done it a few times before. It's been a while since we've all done it, though."

"How do you get close to the whales without them hitting the boat?"

"You just need to stay far enough away so that you're not disrupting the group," Kevin said. "Even if you do get in the middle of the pod, they'd probably swim around you. They're smart animals, so they wouldn't likely hit the boat. It's better to keep a reasonable distance, though."

"What was that like? To go whale watching?" Amber asked. Kevin smiled and pushed his memory of the events into her head. In particular, he showed a favorite memory of his from when he was really young. There was a whale that had gotten really close to the boat and had shot out of the water and fell back in, causing a rush of waves. Everyone had grabbed for the rails while the boat moved. They'd been lucky the boat hadn't tipped over in retrospect. "That was spectacular," Amber said in awe when the memory was completed.

"I'll take you one day," Kevin promised. "When I can take you back, the first thing we'll do is go whale watching assuming it's the season for it."

"Really?" Amber asked dreamy eyed.

"Really," Kevin smiled. He wanted so badly to kiss her, but he resisted. So instead, he brought his hand to her face and rubbed his thumb over her cheek reassuringly. "Just be fair warned: it's a wet experience."

"I imagine so," Amber giggled and dipped her head closer to his hand for a moment before taking it away. "What about the mountains where you live? Did you ever used to climb those?"

"All the time," Kevin smiled. "I still do whenever I'm home. I'm usually a wolf when I do, but it's a good relaxing journey. You'd love it. I can even show you Dask'iya's cave."

"You mean that boogey monster?"

"Yes," Kevin chuckled. "Dad showed it to me and my siblings when we were kids. He told us he was sure it used to be Dask'iya's cave because there was a fire pit and sapping trees."

"How does he know it wasn't just being used recently by someone?" Amber asked with a giggle.

"It's too high up in the mountains for that to be plausible," Kevin said. "For an average person to get up there, we're talking about hours and hours of climbing to get to a cave you can't see from the bottom and a near impossible journey down unless you use the shallower dips in the mountain which would take even longer. Even if someone had tried to get up there, they'd be dead halfway down the mountain if they were lucky."

"Your father seemed to get you and your siblings up just fine," Amber said.

"Yes, but my dad's a wolf and a lot more able bodied than the average man," Kevin smiled. "He was slowed down a bit helping us get up, but he managed it. Dad got us up there in a few hours. Anyone else would have needed days to complete that task."

"Well, I promise, I'll try not to slow you down while we're going up the mountain," Amber smiled back. The two smiled at one another and proceeded to make more plans about what they could do when Amber came to Washington. Whenever that might be.

The pair remained in the park for as long as they could without rousing suspicion or being out for too long. When they finally got back, the store was still slow but not closed and Kevin helped Amber gently get each bird in their linen bag and placed in the large black box for delivery. Amber called the mother-to-be to let her know her order was completed. She was elated and asked if it were possible to have the items delivered to her since she wasn't sure when she would be able to get out to get them and her husband was working during their store hours. Seizing another opportunity to go out with Kevin, Amber eagerly agreed and told her mother that she and Kevin were going to the mother-to-be's house to drop off her birds. She lived across town and it was getting late, so Anna readily agreed that Kevin needed to go with her just to be safe.

"This was convenient," Kevin smiled holding the box as they left the shop and were making their way to the mother's house.

"I know," Amber giggled. "To think I get two dates with you in one day."

Kevin chuckled, "It's a shame you don't have anything specific you need to work on otherwise we could meet in the candle room tonight for a third date in one day."

"Oh, I can always find something to do," Amber smiled. "I can work on some wedding tappers that were ordered."

"I thought your mom was working on those," Kevin said.

"We both are. She's just been focusing on working on weekends. I'll usually do them during the day if I can get away from the shop or at night. Mom complains I'm becoming too much of a night owl and it's not healthy."

"She's not wrong," Kevin said. "It's bad enough the pack tends to sleep intermittently through the day and night. Whenever I'm home and I'm on patrol every night, I never have a full night's sleep. I only take several naps. We all take turns sleeping during the night since there's so many of us and most of us are constantly napping through the day. You should see Nathan," Kevin chuckled, remembering something his brother had shown him last he'd been able to be on patrol. "Nathan usually sleeps in the morning after Scarlet's been fed and Nathan will usually just have her on the bed with him while he's sleeping with Roxanne sleeping against him on the bed. Scarlet always sleeps best, so it seems, whenever she's on Nathan's chest. She loves his heartbeat according to Kyle. He also claims that while Tomoeh was pregnant, Scarlet would always relax a little when Nathan would tell her a story."

"And this is the same 'black sheep' of the family?" Amber giggled.

"Yes, Nathan's the black sheep and Scarlet's Little Red Tree," Kevin joked. "In all seriousness, Nathan's really stepped up. He stuck his neck out for me and Kyle and Natalie so we wouldn't have to get married and now he's shaping up to be a great father. He's still a dreamer, but he's getting more grounded now that Scarlet's around. If I'm being honest, I hope I'll be as good a father someday as Nathan's shaping up to be."

"I know you will be," Amber said confidently. "I can't wait to see the type of father you'll be."

"Do you mean that?" Kevin asked lovingly.

"I do," Amber said. "And when you and I have a son, I want to name him after daddy."

"Levi?" Kevin asked. "I can certainly agree to that. I'm sure your dad would love that too."

"What's your father's name again?"

"Jacob," Kevin answered.

"Levi Jacob," Amber said. "I think that's a handsome name."

"Levi Jacob Black," Kevin smiled. "I think it's a good name too. What about a daughter? I admit I like Heather."

"Heather?"

"Yes, Heather. How does Heather Anna sound?"

"Heather Anna," Amber repeated. "I think that's beautiful," she finally answered with a smile. "Or Anna Renesmee?"

"Damn," Kevin said. "This may sound weird, but I have my heart set on Heather," Kevin joked. "How about Heather-Anna Renesmee."

"Far too long," Amber shook her head. "I think Heather Anna is perfect. I'm curious why you want Heather in particular."

"I love the flower," Kevin said. "I saw them all over the place in Paris when I'd gone and it was a flower that had surrounded the synagogue that I'd brought you to when you were little. Heather's also really common where I live. It's a purple flower that often grows beside rocks." Kevin pushed the memories he had of the flower into Amber's head.

"They are very beautiful," Amber agreed. "I'm curious," she started to giggle. "Will all of you, your siblings I mean, name their children after flowers and trees?"

"That's not the intent, but it would certainly be a fun theme," Kevin chuckled. "Nathan has a Scarlet Willow and we'll have a Heather Anna. Maybe Kyle can have a Rose and Natalie can have a Lily or something."

"Well, when you say it like that, it doesn't sound very special. Heather and Scarlet Willow have thought behind them. You just picked Rose and Lily because they're common."

"For good reason to be fair," Kevin said. "Rose is a pretty flower and so are Lilies."

"Yes, Kevin, they're lovely, but I would like to think that if you plan to name your daughter either, you'd have a good reason behind it or at least have a nice story. Like the story you gave me about Heather. The name's that much prettier by the story you told."

"I'll think of something creative to say about Rose and Lily, then," Kevin joked and the two laughed. "So how far along is this mother to be we're delivering to?"

"About six and a half if I remember correctly. Her baby shower isn't for another few weeks, so we're extremely early on that."

"Better early than late," Kevin said. "Nothing annoys me more than people being late. That and chewing gum. I can't stand that."

"You don't like gum chewing?" Amber giggled.

"No, I fucking hate it, especially in small rooms. People seem to have to concept of chewing with their mouths shut and they start smacking like a fucking cow. I can't stand it." Amber started giggled while Kevin started feeling a little awkward. "I'm sorry to swear."

"No, it's alright," Amber said. "Gum's not so popular here, but I've heard it's very popular in America."

"Too popular," Kevin grumbled. "I have two rules in my office: be punctual, and don't chew gum. That's it. Though sadly I'm forced to tolerate the first being frequently broken."

"Well, you can tell them they need to be on time. By being late they're wasting your time and that's rude."

"I agree, but tell that to your boss's hotshot fat cat clients that have made their money in the stock market and are on top of the world and see how 'stern' you're able to get. I'm not allowed to be stern. Olga's been a godsend for things like that. That woman has the patience of a saint. I've overheard a man screaming at her and she still manages to remain polite. I fear I lack such a talent."

"It's called customer service I'm afraid," Amber smiled. "Why, I remember one year, we had a bride who'd ordered a few candles from us for her unity candle and for the head table. I swear they were perfect when I packed them, but the next day, the mother of the bride came in screaming at us because one of the candles had a chip. She ended up demanding that candle be replaced and demanded a full refund. I told her I would gladly redo the candle for her free of charge and return 30% as a courtesy, but she wasn't having it and demanded to speak to my manager."

"Or your mother," Kevin chuckled.

"Yes, in other words, my mother," Amber giggled. "So I get my mom and she tells the woman the same thing, but offers to give the woman a 40% refund, but then the woman demanded to speak to MY mother's manager. Mom just told the woman, 'there's no one above me madam, I'm the owner,' but the woman didn't believe her."

"Didn't believe her?" Kevin laughed. "What, did she want to talk to your dad or something?"

"As a matter of fact, yes, she demanded to speak to daddy."

"And what did your mom say?" Kevin kept chuckling.

"She told her that daddy was at work and was not the owner of the business regardless. She was already currently speaking to the owner of the company. So the woman just left with the candles, broken one included, and we haven't heard or seen from her or the bride since which is just fine by me."

"Exactly," Kevin smiled, "and you didn't even have to give her a refund."

"Exactly," Amber smiled back. "Surely you get people like that all the time given your line of work."

"I get those plenty," Kevin said. "But I get a percentage from their case if I win plus whatever they pay me up front for my services, so I'm happy."

"It must be nice," Amber giggled. "This woman was really nice, though, so I'm sure we'll be fine."

"That's good to hear. She'll certainly be nice seeing as they were done so early."

"I really wish I could have painted these, but she doesn't know the baby's gender, so I couldn't."

"They look beautiful white," Kevin said. "Don't let yourself worry about it too much."

"I always worry," Amber said. "Each candle and soap is handcrafted so it's very personal. It's a nice feeling when people like what you've made."

"I know," Kevin smiled. "But don't worry Amber. So long as she can see, she'll love them."

Amber blushed, "thank you."

When they arrived at the house, the mother to be answered and welcomed them kindly, inviting them in for some tea and cookies. They went inside and sat on the couch where she invited and eagerly opened the box to see the birds. She picked up one of the linen bags and took out one of the birds and smiled the instant she saw them. She even teared up a little and walked to Amber for a hug, thanking her and complimenting that it was perfect. The mother to be went ahead and inspected each bird to make sure nothing had been damaged, but they were all in good condition, so she put them all back in the box so they wouldn't get ruined. Since she had adored the candles she'd seen, so promised she planned to buy a candle for the baby once it was born that way she could properly request a color pallet. Kevin and Amber left nearly an hour later thanking the woman for her time and that she loved the soaps.

"That was rewarding," Kevin smiled on Amber's behalf.

"That was," Amber agreed with a blush. "Mom will be happy to know we had another happy customer and a possible repeat customer."

"Repeat customers are key," Kevin nodded. "Even in my line of work."

"There's no way people enjoy being repeat customers of yours, though," Amber giggled.

"Well, that's the beauty of being an attorney: all your clients are usually rich so lawsuits and legal troubles are an inevitably. There will always be a need for lawyers, even if people don't always like us."

"Let me ask you," Amber said. "Have you ever had to defend someone that was guilty?"

"All my clients are guilty as far as I'm concerned," Kevin chuckled.

"No, I don't mean like that. I mean they are actually at fault for the crime they're accused of."

"Constantly," Kevin said. "I've had several clients that I defend for fraud. It's obvious to me they're guilty once I've seen all the evidence, but it's my job to put just that smallest shred of a doubt in the jury's mind. Sometimes, that's all you need."

"Doesn't that get horrible, though? Isn't it frustrating to defend someone you know is guilty?"

"Of course it's frustrating," Kevin nodded. "I'd even call it a little demoralizing, but I became a lawyer because I wanted to means to contribute to my tribe meaningfully and be in a position where I can defend them legally if I need to. If there's anything Indian tribes need, it's good lawyers. Believe me, the government will.." Kevin was about to swear, but caught himself, "screw tribes over when they get the chance. So a lawyer is a must. If that means I have to defend some criminals occasionally, then I'll deal with it."

"What if that person's guilty of murder?"

"Same thing," Kevin said. "Every American citizen has the right to a fair trial and representation before a jury of their peers. That's a most basic core of our legal system and it's something our country prides itself on. I can't promise we always deliver per se, but I always do my job no matter who I'm defending. If I tried to turn away people I knew were guilty, I'd get fired and I'd never be able to run a law form of my own. I had a professor that, on our first day of class, asked us if we would rather a client that committed a crime Malum in se or malum prohibitum."

"I don't know what that means," Amber said.

"Malum In Se, or 'wrong in itself' as it's translation from Latin, refers to a crime that is 'inherently' bad, or is a crime we would all consider bad regardless of the law. Rape and murder for example are 'malum in se' because they are dangerous violent crimes that we would all agree is wrong no matter the context. Malum prohibitum on the other hand is a crime that is wrong only because it's against the law. For example, fraud is something that's considered malum prohibitum because it's not a dangerous or violent crime that directly causes injury, it's only against the law. Anyway, back to that professor. 'I want an innocent client' is not an acceptable answer. If that person is in your office, then they've committed a crime or are accused of committing a crime and need legal guidance to either avoid punishment or ensure that punishment is as reasonable as possible. That's much easier with cases that aren't violent crimes. However, if a person is accused or convicted of rape or murder for example, then there's only so much a lawyer can do. If you're found guilty, you're going to jail and it'll be largely up to the judge what time you serve. That's a point where I can't do much to help you. I can plead a case to the jury to encourage a lesser sentence, but that's about it. It's essentially begging."

"Being a lawyer sounds like it has no joy," Amber said.

"It can seem that way from the outside looking in," Kevin agreed. "But it can be rewarding. When you're defending someone that is innocent and you know they are, there's something satisfying about knowing you've helped that person obtain justice. It's not so nice as a pregnant woman hugging you for the hard work you put into those carved soaps, but it has its moments."

"For the sake of your sanity, I hope so," Amber smiled. "Have you ever had to defend someone accused of murder before?"

"I've not," Kevin said. "That tends to go to the lawyers that are higher up at our firm assuming we get such cases. We typically don't, though. Usually the people that actually get brought up on murder charges can't afford a lawyer so they're given a public defender. That's different I'm afraid. I work for a private law firm whereas public defenders work for the state if I recall correctly."

"Why don't you become a public defender?" Amber asked.

"Because I need to eat and make trips to Germany to see you," Kevin chuckled but then became more serious. "A public defender's life isn't much more glamorous than mine. In fact it's less so. Just because a lawyer is a public defender doesn't mean they get the innocent clients. Chances are they don't anyway. I'm sorry to say most of the time, when you're a lawyer you're defending a guilty man whether you like it or not. It's just the way the job is."

"That's so depressing," Amber said. "Even daddy's job is only boring at worst."

Kevin burst into laughter: something he desperately needed. "Well, Amber, if you want me to, I'll try to become an accountant just like your dad. How does that sound?"

"Please don't," Amber shuddered. "You're job's at least interesting. Listening to daddy talk about his job is like listening to paint dry."

"You can listen to paint drying?" Kevin chuckled again.

"You can and it's far more boring than watching it dry."

Kevin laughed a little more at the statement, unable to help but imagine how one might listen to paint drying. Though he agreed it indeed sounded dreadfully boring. They instead found more interesting things to discuss while they continued the walk back to the shop and by the time they returned, Levi had returned home and Anna was platting up dinner. Kevin also noticed she had some pastry dough on the counter. An indicator that she would be making mushroom tarts. So he was excited for breakfast the next morning. At dinner, Amber told Anna about the mother-to-be they'd delivered the soaps to and how happy she had been when she got them. She explained that's why they returned so late because the mother had wanted to look at each bird and make sure they were all perfect. Anna was happy to hear how much the mother liked the birds and was even happier when she found out the mother planned to buy a candle when the baby was born.

During dinner, Amber asked Anna if there were any other projects that she'd like her to work on that night but Anna assured Amber that they were on schedule for their orders and encouraged her to go to bed early since she'd been working all day. After dinner they all sat together in the living room to talk a little more. Kevin and Levi spoke of business and spoke briefly about politics from what Levi was reading in the paper every morning. While Kevin and Levi were talking, Anna decided she wanted to go upstairs early and get some sleep then insisted Amber do the same. Though she was remise to admit it, she was exhausted too. So the two of them went upstairs for leaving Kevin and Levi alone to talk.

"I heard about how you helped Anna today with the shop," Levi smiled. "She says you did a very good job."

"I'm pleased to know she said so," Kevin smiled back. "Amber told me of a few difficult customers they've had before, but compared to the front, this was downright relaxing."

"I imagine," Levi chuckled. "Perhaps its cowardice, but I'm relieved I did not fight. I would not wish those atrocities on my worst enemy."

"Nor I," Kevin nodded. "They're memories I prefer to not think about. You can imagine it's rather frustrating when people try to make me talk about it."

"They don't understand," Levi said. "I'm guessing those that are asking are clients from your law firm or perhaps former classmates?" Kevin nodded. "Yes, that's what I thought. They're outsiders looking in. They don't understand what it's like. I would never dare attempt to understand what you went through, especially for how young you were. But I remember the hardships that trickled down to us all and I still feel the aftermath. Do you remember the house we lived in when you had visited us in Munich?"

"Yes," Kevin nodded.

"That little house was a far cry from what we lived in before the war," Levi lamented. "When Anna and I first married, I'd already been working hard to elevate myself at the bank. Within two years of us getting married, I'd earned a very generous salary. Of course, that was back when the Mark had its prior worth. I was able to afford us a nice, large house with a garden and a huge backyard. We were still trying for a child at the time and Anna wanted so badly to have a yard for our children to play in. Of course, before long it continued to become more and more apparent that we would not have children. That broke Anna's heart when the doctor confirmed she was barren. I remember watching her cry in the little room we'd put aside just for the baby we would never have."

"You both have Amber now," Kevin reminded.

"Indeed, and thank God for her," Levi nodded, brushing away a tear that had formed in his eye before it could fall. "She was exactly what we needed, especially after the war had started. Things weren't so bad at first and everyone was hopeful. We were fighting to defend an ally after all. But the longer the war dragged on, the worse it got. By the end of the war, Anna and I needed to move into a smaller house because the Mark had already lost its value. Anna was so sad when we left. To this day, we've never had a backyard again. Her spirits improved when we heard of Amber, though. And when we brought her home….Anna was so happy. I hadn't seen her that happy since we got married."

"I know you both make Amber happy too," Kevin smiled sincerely. "I really do appreciate that."

"I know how much you must have wished you could have taken her home with you," Levi said. "After all the ugliness you'd been forced to witness, I imagine Amber was that smallest light in your life you'd been missing."

"She always made me feel much better when I got to visit her," Kevin nodded. "She was the only pleasantness I got to experience in my life at that time. Otherwise…" Kevin stopped, suddenly having vivid memories he detested being brought up. "You know what I mean," Kevin finally said.

"Indeed," Levi said. "But things are getting better. I hear America continues to have a booming economy and Germany is coming along since the end of the war. It used to feel impossible, but I think we'll be alright. Germany will be alright."

"I hope so," Kevin said, leaving his comment at that. He was suddenly extremely uncomfortable. "How has Amber been fairing in school," Kevin asked, desperate to change the subject. "I haven't had a chance to ask her."

"She's doing very well," Levi smiled. "Her instructors all speak highly of her, she's doing well in her studies and she's been making a lot of friends. As I recall, you had met Gertrude and Dahlia but she has many more besides just them. Sadly, she's barely seen them since the summer started. She's been working non-stop for the shop. Poor Anna feels terrible about it."

"Don't feel so bad," Kevin smiled. "Amber loves working for the shop. Besides, all this hard work helps her to build character and experience. It'll do her well when she goes to business school. That is still the plan, right? She's not told me of others."

"Yes, she will be attending business school," Levi said proudly. "Bless her grandpa's heart, but he's not thrilled about it. My father I mean. I'll write to him about Anna's business and Amber's future goals and my father will tell me I'm too soft on them and that I'm allowing too much. He's a firm believer in women remaining home and focusing on the house. Anna's never been that kind of woman and I've always admired that about her. She worked a little when we first married and stopped when we had our first perceived pregnancy. It didn't go through of course. After she lost that baby, she'd remained home but she wasn't happy. She loved raising Amber when she finally came along, but she never cared for being a stay at home mom. She had so many times through her day when she was bored out of her mind. She would carve candles to appease it, but it was a costly hobby, so she started selling them from our home in Munich here and there. She's much happier having a business of her own than she was when she stayed home with nothing to do. If that makes me 'soft', then I will remain so."

"My mom has never been one to not work either," Kevin smiled. "My mom's been working since she was old enough to pass for her teens. She studied medicine and became a nurse and when she came to be with the tribe, she was able to become an apprentice to our medicine man. After he passed away, mom took over the role officially and my little brother Kyle has been her apprentice since he was a boy. It became official after Uncle Sokajili passed away and mom became the 'Medicine Man' officially. Or Medicine Woman I should say. According to dad, she's the first woman in the tribe to become a healer."

"It's good to move forward," Levi nodded. "And Kyle's currently in medical school?"

"Yes," Kevin nodded. "Kyle and I are the first of our tribe to attend University. Embry and I are the first to go to war as part of the American Army. I'm the first to win a medal and become a sergeant. And I'll never forget the letter dad had sent to me after I'd run away and had been able to tell him about basic training and what Sgt. Stanley had said about it being a shame that I'm an Indian, otherwise I could have made something of myself. I'd told Sgt. Stanley that I have nothing to be ashamed of and my father made me the man I was at that point in my life. My father had given Sgt. Stanley the raw materials to mold into a soldier. That had impressed Sgt. Stanley and he'd promoted me for the first time just hours later. When dad was able to write me back, he told me he was proud of me. Father had told me before he was proud of me, but for some reason, that one hit home for me. He was proud of me for going against the grain and doing something unconventional. And that meant a lot to me."

"I would be proud too," Levi smiled. "I've told Anna I sometimes wish we could have somehow had a son as well. I wish Anna and I could have given Amber a brother. Someone to carry my name after me, someone to play ball with, someone to be another man in the house. I adore them both, but sometimes it's overwhelming to be the only man of the house. It's why I look forward to you visiting. It's a little like what I imagine having a son would be like."

"That's very kind of you to say," Kevin said. "Natalie and mom are the only women in the house, but Caevia had plenty of sons and daughters. Natalie never wanted for friends. None of us did. I suppose we're lucky in that regard."

"It certainly sounds that way," Levi said. "Other than that, I sometimes wish we could have given Amber a companion in the form of a sibling. It certainly would never be lonely."

"It has its good and bad points," Kevin smiled. "I remember when Kyle was young, Embry and I wouldn't play with him because we thought he wasn't fun. Even so, he'd stand up for us and he'd take the blame for some things. I've told you about how he studied Japanese History with us when Embry and I were the ones in trouble right?"

"Yes, I recall you telling me that story," Levi chuckled. "You and Kyle sound like you're close now at least."

"Yes, we're much closer now," Kevin nodded. "He even kept quiet when Embry and I were planning to join the army. He wasn't happy about it, though."

"I don't wonder why? Poor boy was put in a compromising position. But it all worked out in the end and that's what's important."

"Exactly," Kevin smiled. "He'll be so happy when we can move back to Washington. He doesn't like the east coast as much."

"No? I've heard good things of the east coast."

"There's nothing wrong with the east, it's just different. It's in essence a sunnier version of what we have. Washington's a very rainy state, especially near the water where we are. Connecticut's not quite so rainy. There's a distinct accent out east too that's a little jarring for us. We've gotten used to it by now but it was quite a culture shock for us. We'd grown up in a small town and small village all our lives and the city was a big transition for us. I doubt I'll live outside the city, though. I imagine Alphonse and I will start our practice in Seattle, but that'll still be much closer than I am now."

"I look forward to you opening your own business," Levi smiled. "It's always good to be ambitious."

"It'll be a relief to be in control of what goes on rather than answering to Mr. Huntington. He's a good man, but he has his moments. His wife had attempted to set me up with one of their daughters at the firm's Christmas party," Kevin chuckled.

"Oh dear," Levi chuckled back. "Is she at least a pretty young woman?"

"I don't know. I've never met his children. I don't see the need quite honestly and I don't think Mr. Huntington wants me marrying his daughter regardless."

"His loss then," Levi joked. The clock went off just then, indicating the time and Levi glanced at the clock. "Gracious, it's late."

"We'd better get to bed then," Kevin agreed. The two went up the stairs and said good night to one another before retreating to their rooms. Kevin made a point to remember to close the blinds to the window and was getting ready for bed when there was a knock at the door. The door opened before Kevin could invite the person in. Amber walked in and closed the door behind her. "What are you still doing up?" Kevin asked with a smile.

"I was waiting for you to come upstairs. You and daddy were talking for a while."

"I know," Kevin said, ceasing any disrobing and sitting on the edge of the bed. Amber walked over and sat beside him.

"So what did you and daddy talk about?"

"A lot of things. We talked about you and Anna, we talked about the shop, the war, my family. Lots of things."

"Did you two make plans to go out drinking?"

"We're going tomorrow, remember? Your mom made it clear he's only to drink 3 beers at most."

"Yes, I remember," Amber giggled. "You'll do the same?"

"Yes, I'll do the same," Kevin smiled. "Although, for the record, I can hold my liquor far better than your father can."

"I'm not sure that's anything to be proud of, Kevin," Amber teased.

"How about I help you with the shop again tomorrow?"

"We'll see how busy it gets," Amber said. "The extra help was really appreciated."

"I'm happy to help. I'd hate to be sitting downstairs doing nothing while you and your mother are working so hard. Were you wanting to go downstairs and work?"

"Not right now," Amber said. "I've done little more than carve all day. I'm tired of it right now."

"I don't blame you," Kevin smiled. "Levi mentioned you haven't spent any time with your friends since summer started."

"I haven't had the time. I've been working."

"Maybe you could invite them out and we could all go out to the Jazz club again like you'd suggested. Or we could all have lunch in the park. Something that'll get you back in touch with everyone. I'm sure they miss you."

"That would be so nice," Amber smiled. She moved a little closer to Kevin on his bed and rested her head against his shoulder. "It was nice sitting in the park with you. I'd love for us to do that again soon."

"Me too," Kevin said. "I should take you through Central Park someday."

"Central Park?"

"It's a famous park in New York. Manhattan specifically. I've only been there twice, but I enjoyed the times I'd gone. It was back when I was still in school. Kyle loves to go there on weekends and read on the huge rock in the park. So he's been there far more times than I have."

"Do you remember it well?" Amber asked. Kevin nodded and pushed the memories of the park to her. He showed her all the walkways, the grass and trees, all the flowers, the people walking with strollers or in groups or with their date. There were street food vendors in select spots selling bread and pastries and there were people walking along trying to sell something ranging from fake medicines to pure 'flimflam' machines as Kevin thought of them. He remembered there being a preacher last he'd gone and he was surrounded by people who listened to him talk of fire and brimstone. While those images weren't so pleasant, the sights of the gazebos, the horses and the other people was so relaxing. "I would love to go."

"I'll take you one day," Kevin promised. "Maybe by then I can hold your hand without recourse."

"You can hold my hand now," Amber said and took Kevin's hand in hers. They laced their fingers together and smiled at one another. She brought her head to Kevin's shoulder again and closed her eyes.

"Are you tired?" Kevin asked.

"A little," Amber mumbled.

"Why don't I get you back to bed? We'll see each other again in the morning."

Amber shook her head, "Not yet. I don't want to go to bed yet."

"I thought you said you were tired."

"I'd rather stay with you," Amber said.

Amber's eyes were still closed as Kevin looked down at her. She looked peaceful and happy. It was a very romantic moment that left Kevin wanting more. He took his hand from Amber's so he could wrap that arm around her waist. Then he took her hand with his right so their hands were laced together again. He'd been about to rest his head atop Amber's, but she looked up at him after the shift in position she'd not been expecting. He felt his heartbeat begin to accelerate and he heard Amber's too. He'd meant to pull away when he realized he'd overstepped, but Amber kept looking up at him longingly and she licked her lips just a little from beginning to get dry. Something about seeing her do that weakened his will power and he could not resist kissing her. It would be a gentle kiss, as they always were. No harm in that. So Kevin leaned his head down and pressed him lips to Amber's as he done before.

It was a gentle kiss meant only to be brief, but when Amber brought her free hand to Kevin's cheek, the warmth of her hand was impossible to resist. He tilted his head into Amber's hand and when he did so, Amber parted her lips and let her tongue shyly touch his. He suddenly had an intense reaction to her taste against his tongue. The feel of her made it hard to breath but he didn't care in the least. When Amber moved her hand from Kevin's face, he feared it was a sign she wanted him to stop, so he prepared to pull away, but Amber did not allow it. Her hand, instead, went to Kevin's chest and she took a firm grip on his shirt. Though her hand soon moved again to rest on his neck with her thumb gently moving back and forth on his jaw. Kevin savored the taste of her lips and tongue while they brushed against one another and savored the fresh smell of her as he breathed in the smell of her skin.

All the while, Amber did much the same as Kevin. She breathed in the masculine scent of his skin and savored the taste of him that was so new to her. She felt butterflies begin to flutter in the pit of her stomach and tried to move ever closer to Kevin as they kissed. In her attempts to come closer, her leg slowly moved to rest atop Kevin's leg. Amber may have moved further on her own, but in a rush of blind, unfiltered passion, Kevin took his hand from Amber's and put his hand on her left knee then pulled towards him until Amber was suddenly sitting in his lap. Amber breathed in sharply and released the smallest squeak of surprise at the sudden shift. When she was in Kevin's lap, his hand that had been on Amber's hip moved up her waist while his other hand started at her knee. Amber felt something hard against her hip that made her feel more confident and even made her feel sexy. Kevin continued to kiss her while that hand, ever so slowly as if being cautious, moved gingerly up her leg bringing the hem of her skirt with until his hand rested on her bare skin. The feel of his hand made her shudder and she wrapped her arms around Kevin's neck. Eventually his hand made it back to her hip and his fingers played with the remaining fabric there from her knickers.

Kevin finally realized he was going too fast despite the fog his mind was in as they kissed. He realized he needed to stop now before he no longer had the will left anymore. Kevin squeezed Amber's hip, then moved down to squeeze her thigh in one last sexual gesture before removing his hand from under her skirt and tilting his head back up so their noses touched at giving her one last kiss before pulling away. When he took his lips away, Amber opened her eyes to look into his. She was in a daze of passion that left even her vision cloudy. She had so enjoyed the touch of his hands and now that he'd taken his hand from her skin, she felt cold. Kevin appeared as dazed as she did. When he saw the look in her eyes, he wanted to keep kissing her. By God did he want to keep touching her, but that look also told him why he needed to stop. Finally, Kevin kissed Amber's nose and picked her up as he stood then placing her back down on her feet.

"We should get to sleep. We're both working tomorrow," Kevin smiled. Amber seemed to still be in a daze for a moment until she finally regained her senses. However, when she did, that need Kevin had elicited only intensified even if only for the fact that she was fully aware now. When Amber didn't answer right away, Kevin leaned down a little so he was closer to her. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah," Amber finally managed mostly under her breath.

"Alright," Kevin smiled. "I'll take you to your room." Amber nodded awkwardly and they left Kevin's room and walked the brief distance down the hall to the door of Amber's room. She opened the door and Kevin stood behind her waiting for her to go inside. Once inside, she turned to look at Kevin with her hand on the door, but she didn't close it.

"Kevin," she finally said but couldn't think of any other words.

"I know," Kevin smiled lovingly. "I feel the same."

"Did I do something to make you stop?"

"No," Kevin reassured. "I just forced myself to exercise some self-restraint."

"Oh," Amber said. She licked her lips again and took a deep breath before she looked at him again. "I don't suppose," Amber started, getting really nervous, "that, if I asked if you would kiss me again, you would?"

"Gladly," Kevin answered. "I just got a little ahead of myself just now."

"It was nice though," Amber encouraged. She stepped a little closer to Kevin as if trying to be seductive. She wasn't sure if she was succeeding, especially since Kevin kept smiling at her lovingly. Nothing like that distant, passionate gaze from before. "I didn't mind that you started kissing me."

"I'm relieved," Kevin answered. "Good night, Amber."

"Kevin?" Amber said, taking a hold of Kevin's sleeve. "Can I request a good night kiss?"

Kevin smiled and nodded before coming a little closer and leaning down to kiss her lips. Amber attempted to initiate another passionate kiss, but Kevin simply had to put his foot down and stop. If he didn't stop now, he never would until they'd reached their oblivions. So after pressing his lips to hers, Kevin nipped her lip gently just as a small gesture before pulling away again and kissing her forehead. Amber had hoped for another intense kiss, so she was surprised when Kevin pulled away so quickly. He kept smiling at her with his eyes slightly lidded and his breathing slightly labored.

"I love you, Amber," he said. "I'll see you in the morning."

"I love you," Amber said back before Kevin finally walked away to return to the guest room.

Reluctantly, Amber closed her bedroom door and leaned against it a moment as she felt her heart flutter. She ran her tongue and teeth over her lips as if attempting to taste him again. She'd never felt this way before. Every feeling he'd initiated was new to her and she adored it. She felt herself grow hot in her cheeks and every part of her body had tingled when Kevin kissed her. When his hands had rested on her bare skin, she suddenly wished she could do the same to him. So this was arousal? True arousal. She'd known attraction to Kevin, naturally, and she'd even felt like she desired him, but she'd never really felt what desiring him really meant. Now she did and she couldn't stop thinking about it. Briefly, she contemplated how long Kevin would protest before giving in should she walk back to his room and snuggle under the covers with him and start kissing him. Not long she knew. However, Kevin had ended the kiss for good reason, so she didn't push it and undressed for bed. At a loss of what else to do about how she was feeling, she started running her hands over her body.

She thought about the feel of Kevin's hands and his lips. She felt her cheeks become hot again and needed to lick her lips to keep them from going dry. She thought back to a time when she'd caught a glimpse of Kevin's chest, trying to imagine what his skin might feel like under her hands. When she had the memory in her mind, she shivered with need and finally brought her hands down over her core where the sensations were most intense. When she did, she felt a sharp sensation of relief, yet it was fleeting. She rubbed her core again and received the same sensation, but almost instantly it wasn't enough and she needed more. So she dared to delve in past her remaining clothes and brought her hand to her core again with nothing to separate them. She rubbed until she found the source of her desire. Her breathing labored but she did her best to remain quiet. She kept thinking of Kevin, both what they'd just done and that memory of him shirtless, however brief that moment had been. She became more precise and used her middle finger against her clitoris so as to strengthen the sensations she was experiencing. When she did, she whimpered at the feeling and then she sighed. She kept rubbing until she felt her core tighten and started to feel tingling all over her body. In an instant, that tight feeling released as though she'd snapped a rubber band. She kept rubbing as she rode out the remaining climax, but it was over too soon. It seemed she'd reached a pinnacle within seconds, minutes at best, of her starting. When she came down from that high, she wondered and then hoped that Kevin would make the feeling last much longer.

When Kevin returned to his room, he went straight into bed, not bothering removing his clothes. He didn't know how he'd done it: not kissed her as he had before. She'd looked so breathless and sultry. When she'd stepped forward, her scent had consumed him and the memory of her filled his mind. It did so once again and he needed release. He removed his belt then his shirt and unfastened the pants he wore so he would be free to spring out and be touched. Once he'd taken hold of his erection, he just stroked mindlessly, trying to keep the memory of her fresh in his mind. Her skin was so soft to touch and so warm. He was sure she must have felt him harden against her when he pulled her into his lap. He'd been pressed against her hip and held her firmly. He remembered the feel of her lips, how wonderful she tasted and he remembered when his fingers had touched her knickers. They had been the only thing stopping his hand. He dared to wonder what it would have felt like had he thrown all resolve out the window and had touched between her legs. He dared to wonder if she might have already been wet and ready. He dared to wonder if she would have moaned if he'd slipped his fingers inside that searing heat. He even dared to wonder if she would have touched him as he'd begun touching her. Would she have been so bold as him and taken a hold of his erection in her hand or would she have been too shy?

He felt like a young man fantasizing about his first love. He couldn't think about her body because any image he might conjure would surely be insufficient. He focused on what he did know: her eyes and how they'd looked at him with passion, the taste and feel of her lips when they kissed, the cute way she'd squeaked when he'd pulled her close, the feel of his hand on her skin and the feel of her hip pressed against his throbbing erection. His longing for her deepened with each stroke of his hand until he brought himself to release, feeling his seed warm on his stomach when he was spent. It was several moments before Kevin was able to regain his senses and clean himself up with the tissues on the nightstand. When he was clean, Kevin went under the covers completely as is after kicking off his shoes and replaced his head on the pillow. As he rested against the pillow, he had a realization that Amber was doing the same thing as him. He heard her gentle moan through the walls and longed to be there with her. He sensed when she was done and heard the tiniest whimper escape her lips when it happened. He knew, after tonight, their relationship had changed significantly. Just last year, he'd revealed to her that he'd imprinted on her and had already started making plans for the future. Now, they'd begun to delve into something more intense and physical. He wasn't sure how long he could hold out. It seemed too soon, at least to him. He would do his best, but after that kiss tonight, he knew she'd want more and more. He would too.

The following morning, Amber woke up first to the smell of her mother making those mushroom tarts Kevin liked so much. When she woke, all the feelings from last night had lightened, but only a little. She no longer felt like she might burst, but she could still feel Kevin warm against her. She left her bed and dressed for the day before stepping out of her room. She heard her parents talking downstairs, so Amber walked across the hall to the guest bedroom. Before she could reach the door, however, Kevin stepped out dressed for the day and when their eyes met, Kevin gave her that loving smile and she blushed.

"Morning," Amber managed.

"Good morning Amber. How'd you sleep?" Her heart raced again at the sound of his voice and she couldn't help but bite her lips. She took a deep breath, licked her lips and finally managed an answer.

"I slept well once I was asleep. Getting to sleep was a little difficult for me."

"Why's that?" Kevin asked, stepping just a little closer. Amber looked up and made an attempt at a seductive smile. It made Kevin's smile brighten.

"You know exactly why," Amber answered.

"I do," Kevin grinned and winked at her. Amber had to swallow a lump that formed in her throat and her heart continued racing. It grew heavier when Kevin stepped just a little closer. "If you want the truth, I had a hard time falling asleep too."

"Really?" Amber asked, a little flustered.

"Really," Kevin smiled. He listened a moment and glanced toward to entrance of the kitchen to make sure they were alright before giving Amber another kiss. A very brief, tender, gentle, almost maddeningly tame kiss. "How about today, when we get a chance, we go visit a few friends of yours and invite them to that little park lunch we talked about yesterday?"

"Aren't you going to the beer hall with daddy today?"

"Yes, but that's not until he gets home and we've all had dinner. We've got plenty of time to pop in on some friends and ask them if they'd like to go for a picnic."

"Okay," Amber smiled. "We'll start making plans for that."

"Now let's get downstairs. I've been looking forward to those mushroom tarts since last year." Amber scrunched her nose and Kevin chuckled gently before kissing her one more time and then going downstairs. Amber followed after him and they all sat down for breakfast together, Anna and Levi remaining none the wiser.
