Chapter 97

The train screeched as it started coming to a halt and everyone on the platform eagerly waited for their sons and daughters that served as nurses to finally exit the cars. Evalina was giddy, nearly hopping up and down eagerly waiting.

"Calm down, Evalina," Dante smiled. "He'll be off in a minute."

"To think a minute could last so long," Evalina said. "Wait until you meet him, daddy. You'll love him, I know it."

"I'm sure we will," Dante said while they continued to wait.

Conductors got off the train first and the men on the train were clearly impatient. A few were poking their heads out the windows and started waiving to family members. Once man in particular had his head poked out and a woman ran to him crying and tried to hug him, but she wasn't tall enough and could only reach his hand. The conductor put an end to the display for safety's sake telling the woman her the man would be off the train momentarily.

"This is it, Ivory," Tamara smiled and looked at her daughter. "Are you ready to meet your daddy?"

"Yes!" Ivory smiled eagerly and stayed in her mother's arms so she could get a good view and so she'd see Nathan the moment he was off. Travis's mother, father, and siblings all waited on that platform as well, talking amongst themselves as most did not speak English or their English was very poor. There was band on the platform ready to begin playing the moment the men began flooding out. Amber waited beside her parents as they stared at the train.

"How are you feeling, Amber?" Levi asked her in German.

"Nervous," Amber admitted.

"Don't be, Amber," Anna smiled. "You've both been waiting a long time for this. You have mine and your father's word that come Sunday, we'll talk to Rabi Kowalski about making an exception for Kevin and giving you two a Jewish wedding." Anna returned her attention to the train while Amber said nothing, only staring at the ground.

Then at long last, men and women were finally starting to filter out of the train. They all waited eagerly as Travis was the first to come off the train. He'd been sad most of the trip home. He and Oscar had left one another on amicable terms. They'd found a closet to be alone in one last time before Oscar told Travis he'd miss him and always remember him fondly. If only Travis could move on so easily. But when he saw his parents and siblings and nieces and nephews waiting to welcome him home, he finally smiled and went right to them. He'd not realized until that moment how desperately he'd actually missed home and his family. Embry and Peta were the next to exit the train and the made a bee line for Caevia. Natalie, JJ, Salem and Nesia stood nearby with all the Call siblings. Embry went to Caevia first and then saw Natalie. He looked between them and stopped at Caevia. She smiled at him and Embry finally broke down, lowering his head so he could hug Caevia. Peta did the same and hugged Caevia.

"I'm so sorry, mom," Embry cried and Caevia rubbed his and Peta's heads reassuringly and shushed them gently. Embry glanced at JJ and held out his hand. JJ allowed himself to cry a little and went to them. "I'm sorry, JJ."

"I know," JJ mumbled. Eventually, the whole family was huddled around Caevia, both welcoming Embry and Peta home while crying that Jae was gone. The sight made Renesmee cry a little and she rubbed her cheeks and placed her hand on Natalie's back reassuringly. She returned to looking at the train and smiled again when Kyle got off the train.

"That's him," Evalina grinned.

"Him?" Dante asked, staring at the man Evalina indicated.

"That's him," Evalina nodded and waited for Kyle to see her. He did in an instant and ran the remainder of the way to her until he was under the cover of the platform and hugged her. Renesmee went to Kyle and he hugged her too. "I missed you," Evalina whispered.

"I missed you too," Kyle said. She reveled in hearing his voice again for the first time in over a year. It even made her tremble. "I missed you too, mom."

"Welcome home, Kyle," Renesmee said. Jacob came over and patted Kyle on the back. Kyle released Renesmee and Evalina and hugged his dad.

"Welcome home," Jacob said.

"It's so good to be home," Kyle said. He looked at the seven people near Evalina that he didn't recognize. He saw the three that didn't have red eyes and assumed they were her parents and brother. "Hello," Kyle said.

"So you're Kyle?" Dante spoke up.

"Yes, sir," Kyle said. "Are you her father or brother?"

"I'm her father," Dante said before going down the line of introductions. "This is my wife and Evalina's mother, Amadora. This is our son Alphonse. This is my father and his wife, Dimitri and Heidi and these are Amadora's parents Afton and Chelsea."

"Pleasure to finally meet you," Amadora smiled kindly. "When we did finally find out about you, we heard quite a bit about you."

"I'm sorry it took so long for us to meet," Kyle said and shook Dante's hand. "Evie speaks so highly of your in her letters." Then Kyle looked at Dimitri and Afton. "I'm told by Evie that there's a mild disagreement as to what a grandson's middle name would be?"

"Oh, no, there's no disagreement," Afton said. "His middle name will be after me."

"I beg to differ," Dimitri said. Heidi and Chelsea managed to stop them.

"Hush, both of you," Chelsea said. "Wait until there's actually a baby then you two can bicker." Then she smiled at Kyle. "Let me start by preemptively welcoming you to the family."

"Welcome to our family to you as well," Kyle said.

"We'll talk a little more when we get back," Dante said.

"Kyle, I made those lemon cookies for you?" Evalina said.

"Really," Kyle asked and leaned down to kiss her. "I won't share a morsel."

"Well, there's at least 200 cookies. You should share at least a few," Evalina smiled.

"No," Kyle said. "Mine," and the two laughed and kissed again. In the meantime, Nathan was the next to finally come off the train. When he was in view, Ada María smiled, getting teary eyed, and leaned down to whisper to Ariel.

"There's your father," she said.

"I know," Ariel grinned, barely able to believe his eyes. Ivory was just as excited. When she saw Nathan, she began pushing on Tamara to put her down and when she finally did, Ivory began running to Nathan with Ariel following close behind.

"Daddy!" Ivory said over and over again until Nathan grinned from seeing her, choking up a little himself, and kneeled down to take her in his arms. Nathan stood just as Ariel reached him and he hugged the boy close to him.

"Welcome home, dad," Ariel said. A boy that appeared 12. He wasn't aging quite as fast as a usual half breed would, but he was still far more grown than Ivory. Nathan wouldn't let himself feel bad about that. Rather, he hugged Ariel tight.

"I'm so happy to finally meet you," Nathan said. "I'm sorry I was gone so long."

"You're home now," Ariel said.

"You look so much like your mother," Nathan said and looked at Ariel. He really did look so much like Ada María. "How is your mother?"

"She's alright," Ariel said. "She's missed you a lot. And she's been looking after Jaedynn."

"Really?" Nathan asked and looked up at Ada María and was entranced. She was a vision of when they'd first met. Hair up in a tight bun, her bright red dress and black shoes. And beside her was Scarlet holding Jaedynn and Tamara to her other side.

"Daddy," Ivory said. "Let's go say hi to Jaedynn. She's a cute baby! Scarlet calls her Snow White and she's even taken us to the theatre for a Disney movie viewing! We saw Snow White, Pinocchio, Bambi and Fantasia!"

"They weren't showing Dumbo that day, though. We got to see that another day," Ariel said.

"Has she now?" Nathan asked Ivory with a smile. "Sounds to me like the lot of you had a pretty good time while I was away."

"It would have been more fun with you there," Ivory said and hugged Nathan around the neck. Nathan kissed Ivory's head.

"So tell me about all those movies Scarlet took you to. I've heard of a few of them and we all got to see Bambi when we were in England. Can't say anyone enjoyed seeing Bambi's mother die."

"I didn't like that either," Ivory said. "I liked Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs!"

"Yes, your Aunt Natalie liked that one too," Nathan smiled.

"I wish she would have come with us to see it," Ivory said.

"Maybe next time," Nathan hurried to say, suspecting he knew why Natalie was so hesitant to go to the movie.

"Maybe next, Disney will make another princess movie!" Ivory said.

"You'll just have to wait and see, but I'll tell you what. If it is a Princess movie, I'll go see it with you. Even if it's not a princess movie, I'll take you."

"Yay!" Ivory cheered and hugged Nathan tighter. Nathan finally reached the others, allowing Tamara to overhear the last bit of the conversation and she laughed.

"Winning her love I see," Tamara smiled and Nathan smiled back.

"Hey, Tamara," Nathan said. "Thanks for bringing Ivory."

"I told you I would," Tamara said and went to hug him. "Welcome home." Then, Nathan looked at Ada María and Scarlet. He finished hugging Tamara and went to the two, zeroing in on Jaedynn.

"Is this Jaedynn?" Nathan asked. The little girl hid her face a little with a smile. "What's the matter, Jaedynn? Aren't you happy to see me?"

"She's just being shy," Ada María smiled. "Jaedynn, see if you can't sneak in there and get a hug from your daddy." Jaedynn giggled just a bit while Nathan used his free arm to take Jaedynn into a hug. When she was there, Jaedynn gave Nathan a big hug.

"That's the welcome I wanted," Nathan chuckled and kissed Jaedynn's head. Then he looked at Scarlet and smiled. "My arms are a little full, but came here and give me a hug." Scarlet giggled and walked over to Nathan to give him a hug.

"Welcome home, daddy. We missed you a whole lot."

"I missed you too," Nathan said and kissed Scarlet's cheek. "I'm told you shifted?"

"I did," Scarlet said. "It was quite a story."

"You'll have to tell me all about it," Nathan grinned and, at last, he looked at Ada María. "Hey Ada," Nathan said. He felt a little stupid. Five years and that was the best he could think to say to her.

"Hey, Nathan," Ada María smiled. "Welcome home."

"It's good to be home," Nathan said. "We'll talk later, okay?"

"Alright," Ada María nodded and felt anticipation forming in the pit of her stomach. He smiled at her, though. It was a loving smile she'd not seen in years and nearly brought her to tears but she remained composed.

Kevin was the last to get off the train and when Amber saw him, she shivered. Seeing him again after being relinquished from the camps was almost intimidating. He wore his uniform and appeared powerful. It aroused and even frightened her. She was the first one Kevin looked at when he got off that train and when he saw her, he smiled. That moment of intimidation passed when she saw that smile. When they'd reunited in Germany, Kevin had held her tight and made promises, but he'd not really smiled at her. But now she saw that smile that never failed to turn her stomach to knots and make her heart flutter and suddenly she wondered why she'd been so scared. Perhaps it was because, back in Germany, when she'd seen him she'd seen Sergeant Kevin William Black, commander of a group of men and ruthless with determination to find her. Now, she saw Kevin her Fiancé. The gentle, loving man she'd fallen in love with and her fears at seeing him again were allayed.

"He's just as I remember him," Anna said with a teary eye and smile. Amber nodded absently and slowly started walking forward. Kevin reached her just as she was beginning to walk over, dropped his bag, and hugged Amber. Amber hugged him back and started to cry into Kevin's shoulder.

"Amber," Kevin whispered her name in her ear and kept hugging her. Anna and Levi came forward to give Kevin a hug too. When he saw them, he smiled. "I'm sorry I didn't find you sooner," Kevin said.

"We were found," Anna said. "That's what's important. Welcome home, Kevin."

"It's good to be home," Kevin said.

"Uncle Kevin!" he heard a woman who's voice he didn't recognize and finally saw Alphonse there with two other people. He realized the young woman must be Anastasia and he couldn't believe how much she'd grown.

"Anastasia? Is that you? When did you grow up so much?"

"It snuck up on us all," Alphonse said. Kevin released Amber and her parents so Anastasia could hug him.

"You became a beautiful young woman, Anastasia," Kevin praised. "You look so much like your father."

"Thank you," Anastasia brushed away a little tear. "Oh! Harold, where are your manors! Introduce yourself." Kevin looked at the young man who extended his hand.

"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Sergeant. Or..Mr. Black. My name is Harold Fitzgerald Foster. Lord Heidelberg hired me to assist since you were away."

"A pleasure," Kevin answered and shook the young man's hand. "I'm surprised you came to welcome home your boss."

"It's not that, Uncle Kevin," Anastasia smiled. "Harold and I are engaged."

"You don't say?" Kevin said and looked at Alphonse. "He passed Ana's specifications?"

"He did," Alphonse said. "Possibly the first thing Ana and I have ever agreed about."

"Daddy," Anastasia said sternly but returned her smile to Kevin. "We've been engaged a while, but I wanted to wait until you finally came home. I can't very well get married without my Uncle Kevin here."

"Would have hurt my feelings something awful if you did," Kevin chuckled and hugged Anastasia a little tighter. Then he looked at Harold. "You love her?"

"You think Alphonse would put up with me if I didn't?"

Kevin chuckled, "Good answer, kid. So are you from here?"

"I'm from the East Coast, actually. My parents deal heavily in the housing business and I had the good graces to attend Harvard."

"Harvard, eh?" Kevin said and shrugged. "Not Yale?"

"I'm afraid not, sir," Harold said. "Though I assure you, my education is just as well versed as yours and my future father-in-law's."

"And how has he done?" Kevin asked Alphonse.

"He's taken a lot off my shoulders," Alphonse said. "He's a sharp kid and has won us a few new clients. So I'd say he's done well for us."

"Good to know," Kevin said. "I suppose I'll get to know you better once I'm back in the office."

"No need to rush, Kevin," Alphonse said. "You've been away from home too long. You deserve some time to be with everyone before we start throwing cases at you again."

Kevin chuckled, "I'll take a week to myself before I come back. How about that?"

"Gives the mice time to play before the cat comes home," Harold chuckled. "I hear tale that you're called the Iron Thumb by most."

"I have a lot of nicknames. All of them are dutifully earned," Kevin said with a chuckle. Anastasia finally left Kevin's arms and he took Amber back while Anastasia practically leaped over to Alphonse.

"Oh, daddy, now that Uncle Kevin's home we can start planning the wedding! I think a big church wedding and we'll hold a reception at the biggest hotel in Seattle and then the next day we'll hold brunch at our house! And then we can go to Havana!"

"Cuba?" Harold scrunched his nose.

"Yes, Cuba. It's beautiful there, I hear," Anastasia said. While they bickered, Kevin looked at Amber.

"I missed you," Kevin said.

"I missed you too," Amber said.

"How do you like the house?" Kevin asked.

"The candle room you added was a nice touch," Amber managed to smile. "We've been staying there. I hope you don't mind."

"Why should I? It's as much your house as it is mine," Kevin answered. Amber didn't answer and kept her face in Kevin's shoulder. "are you okay?"

"I'm fine," Amber said, feeling a discomfort forming. She needed to talk to him. But not here.

"Are you sure?" Kevin asked.

"I'd rather talk about it alone," Amber said in a barely audible tone.

"Alright," Kevin finally relented.

Once they'd all greeted one another and all the men had been welcomed home, Kevin said goodbye to Alphonse and promised he'd be back next Monday before going home to the tribe with everyone. As she promised, there were lemon anginette cookies in ready supply and as Kyle had threatened, he guarded them jealously. If he was caught in a sharing mood, he might give one cookie, but for the most part he kept them all to himself. People asked for stories of their time at war, but they really didn't care to talk about it. Kevin and the others relented but would only talk about their time in England and after they'd reached Berlin. The only times when anyone ever got a semblance of being able to enjoy themselves. Nathan focused on all his kids. Jaedynn was an affectionate little girl once she got used to Nathan. It didn't take long. Even at her tender age, Ada María would put the girl to sleep with stories of Nathan. Nathan sat quietly and listened as Ivory talked all about Las Vegas and the 'dragon nest' they had in the backyard and all about school where Tamara was the teacher but she didn't get any special treatment at all to which Ivory pouted a little, indicating the truth of the statement, and all the while Nathan listened as if it were the most interesting story ever. Since he didn't want to talk about the war, Ariel asked Nathan to recount all the stories Ada María had told him and, to him, stories he'd heard hundreds of times were significantly more interesting when recounted by his father.

Kyle took that time to get acquainted with Evalina's family. She'd indeed told them a lot about him and asked for elaboration on a number of points including his education at Yale. Kevin made sure to step into the conversation, relaying the story of how Kevin had to convince Kyle's classmates not to tar and feather him after he, in essence, forced every man in that class to admit they masturbate. Kyle defended himself in stating that he merely meant to point out that one does not suffer syphilis from such practices and he'd merely stated that such a condition was sexually transmitted and not a result of masturbatory habits. Alphonse was the only one to be amused by the explanation. They asked Renesmee for stories from Kyle's youth and Kevin would offer other stories in return, but Kyle had been right in stating that compared to his brothers, he was rather boring save for when he attended college.

"So how did you obtain cadavers?" Alphonse asked. "I mean, do people donate their bodies to science?"

"Not enough," Kyle said and rubbed the back of his head. "Truthfully, our professors usually got their hands on the bodies and we learned not to ask questions. A class I took for example had it arranged that we would take turns getting the bodies and they were always from these local kids."

"And how did they get them?" Renesmee asked, having never heard this little tale.

"Depended," Kyle said. "I preferred not to ask, though there was one where I had to. He looked a little too freshly dead. Usually, the human body wastes no time in the decomposition process and most bodies those kids would give us would be sickly pale, moth-eaten to a degree and would plainly be stolen from graves, though once or twice we'd get bodies that had floated up the river. Those were the worst. This guy on the other hand didn't look more than a few hours dead."

"What happened to him?" Alphonse asked. "You're a mind reader aren't you?"

"I prefer to avoid doing so if I can help it," Kyle said. "I did ask those kids where they got the body and their ring leader just told me, 'I wouldn't be complaining about a dead body, mister. Beggars shouldn't be choosers'. I went ahead and read his mind and effectively, what happened was that guy was extremely drunk the night before and those kids…let's say helped him down a flight of stairs. Although, when we dissected the man, it was rather clear he'd suffered from suffocation because there was bruising in the form of handprints. Could never look those kids in the eye again."

"I'll bet," Alphonse said. "Any other gruesome stories from your college years?"

"That's the worst of it," Kyle said. "The rest were science courses, more dissections, a medical internship and then my graduation."

"And what about this hospital you're wanting to build?" Dante asked. "Evalina says that's a goal of yours."

"It is," Kyle said. "I've been saving up for it for years. It's no cheap endeavor to start up a hospital. My pay from the war will certainly help and once I return to working, that'll contribute to those funds."

"Evalina mentioned that you aren't planning to have children any time soon," Amadora brought up. For the first time during that conversation, Kyle was uncomfortable.

"It would be once that hospital is opened," Kyle said. "Once I have all the money I need saved up, Carlisle will act as a benefactor and business partner of mine. I'd prefer to wait to have children until I've accomplished that."

"How long do you suppose that'll take?" Amadora asked.

"I was hit with quite a roadblock when the crash of '29 slowed things down, but I suspect with the war over, business will start booming again. If there's any positive to come from this war, it helped get us out of the depression."

"With this boom, what estimation would you give for the hospital being completed?"

"If I can manage it, I'd love to get it built and operating in five years," Kyle said.

"Five years?" Amadora said.

"Mom, stop pestering him," Evalina spoke up. "Besides, it's silly to pester us about children when we're not even married yet."

"She's right," Dante said. "Speaking of which. Evalina mentioned she wanted a ceremony at the Vatican."

"Yeah," Kyle said hesitantly.

"Oh, relax, we'll take care of it," Dante said. "Now's not the time to be the type of man that only sees dollar signs when he's planning something."

"It wasn't that so much as they're extremely strict. I don't know if I can meet the criteria."

"We'll take care of it," Afton assured. "We actually know a few of the priests and we've been rather generous over the years. I'm sure they wouldn't be bothered to give Evalina a Catholic wedding. You are Catholic aren't you?"

"Yes," Kyle said.

"Baptized?"

"Yes, but I doubt the priest that baptized me would still be alive."

"They'd have records you were baptized there," Renesmee spoke up. "Even if the priest passed away, they'd have record of it that we can send to the Vatican if it's needed."

"When do you suppose we can have that?"

"I can send word that it's needed," Renesmee said. "Kyle can go and get them and you can send them where you need to."

"That'll work," Afton said. "Though I think it's only fair to warn there's likely a long waiting list to get married in Vatican City."

"Well, that's fine," Evalina said. "Renesmee, you said we can get married any month so long as it's under the moon cycle you say right?"

"Yes, but that's the Quileute ceremony," Renesmee said. "That would need to be here."

"Daddy, do you think once Renesmee finds out the moon cycle, we can arrange it for the month after the Quileute wedding?"

"Why bother? You'd have to get married in the morning?"

"Because I want to do this right," Evalina protested.

"If it's what you want I don't see why not," Dante said. "Did you have a season in mind?"

"I'd rather not get too picky," Evalina said. "This'll be a tough wedding to plan already. I know not everyone can come, but you and Jacob will come to Italy for the Catholic ceremony at least, right?"

"I wouldn't miss it for the world," Renesmee reassured. "I've always wanted an excuse to see Rome. My son's wedding seems the perfect excuse."

"And dad," Kyle said, "You'll like Italy. It's beautiful and it's much better weather than England and Scotland were."

"I never complained about the weather there," Jacob said. "If anything, it made me think of home." They all laughed while Renesmee patted Jacob's shoulder.

"I'll make sure you enjoy yourself, even if it kills me," Renesmee said.

"Sure, sure," Jacob grumbled. "And for the record, Caleb Jacob has a better ring to it."

"Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but my opinion is right," Afton argued. "Don't you already have a grandson named after you? Jay Jacob?"

"Never hurts to have more," Jacob said and Renesmee giggled, patting Jacob's knee affectionately.

"I think it's fair to let them have one, Jacob," Renesmee smiled.

"They can have the next one," Jacob said. Kyle's shudder wasn't lost on him and he laughed. "Remember what Dante said about only seeing dollar signs?"

"I can think of no other endeavor more worthy of being seen with a dollar sign filter," Kyle grumbled.

"You'll never win my daughter's hand in marriage with that attitude," Dante poked fun while the group had a quick laugh at Kyle's expense. Kevin chuckled alongside them and glanced at Amber. He noticed she appeared tired and a little disinterested. She'd spent most of the evening with her head against his shoulder not saying much of anything.

"Are you tired?"

"A little," Amber said.

"Are you and your parents staying here for the night or did you want to return to Seattle?"

"We're staying here the night," Levi spoke up. "And rest assured, I'll look for work soon. Your grandfather tells me my English has improved quite a bit, so I'm comfortable looking for work. It'll take a little time to save up enough to find us a home, but we'll get out of your way as soon as possible."

"There's no rush, Levi," Kevin said. "You're all welcome to stay as long as you want. Hell, you're welcome to live with us."

"I'd not feel right about it," Levi said. "I think it best I find us a home. Amber can move into your home permanently once you're married."

"Of course," Kevin said. "I have some money set aside. At least let me put a down payment on a house for you."

"No, no, I'll worry about it," Levi said. "Anna and I aren't the ones you need to be providing for." He pointed his fork in Amber's direction but she said nothing. Kevin looked down at her again and wrapped his arm around her.

"You said there was something you wanted to talk about," Kevin said and Amber nodded. "Why don't we go out on the patio and we'll talk there."

Amber nodded reluctantly and they walked onto the Cullen's patio, but she pulled him along until they reached the swing set that was outside. The kids that had been using it were either too tired to play or were being told they needed to go to bed because it was getting late. Amber took one swing and Kevin sat beside her on the other. He didn't force her to speak, but she remained quiet for a while, pushing herself in a gentle back and forth sway with her toes. Kevin kept quiet while Amber did so until the silence was too much. He reached out his hand to her which Amber noticed and accepted absently.

"What was it you wanted to talk about?" Kevin asked.

Amber was silent a moment before finally saying, "I don't really know how to say it. We've waited so long and now….."

"You can tell me, Amber," Kevin reassured. Amber looked up at him, teary eyed before looking away again.

"I'm not ready to get married," she finally blurted out. Kevin tightened his hold just a moment hoping he was being reassuring.

"Do you not want to marry at all?" Kevin dared to ask, but Amber shook her head.

"No," she said. "I want to marry you. I'm just not ready." She leaned forward and allowed her face to rest in her free hand and he heard her start to cry a little. "I know you wouldn't blame me or hold it against me but…..I feel damaged. I feel like a whore that's not worthy of you."

"That's not true, Amber," Kevin reassured adamantly. "You're right that I'd never blame you for what happened. It wasn't your fault. It doesn't change that I love you. It would never change how I feel about you."

"I know," Amber whimpered. "But I'm not ready." She rubbed her eyes. "Before all this….I remember wanting intimacy with you. I remember it making me giddy. Now…..I can't picture it without flashbacks."

"I'd never lay a hand on you if you didn't want it," Kevin said gently.

"I know," Amber said. "I know you wouldn't, but I feel so guilty. It's been so long since we've been together in any way. Now that we're finally together again, the thought of…."

"Amber," Kevin said when she didn't continue her thought. He stood from the swing and guided Amber to stand with him. Once she was, he brought his hands to her face and held her so she would look at him. "Nothing will happen until you're ready," he continued. "Not a wedding, no sex, I won't even kiss you if you don't want. Nothing will happen until you tell me you're ready. We have time. An eternity even. There'll be plenty of time for us to get married. You're here now. There's nothing to get in the way once the time comes."

"Thank you," Amber whimpered. "I feel horrible telling you this but-"

"Don't feel awful, Amber," Kevin smiled gently. "I'd rather you told me you weren't ready than have me pressuring you to hurry things along when you aren't ready. You have my word: no marriage, no sex, nothing until you tell me so."

Amber smiled, "I love you."

"I love you too," Kevin said and rested his head against hers. "I'll wait, Amber. We have time." Amber nodded and wrapped her arms around him and he held her back. He resisted the urge to kiss her, though he wanted to place one on her cheek or neck. He refrained though. "I have a present for you actually," he said when he remembered something.

"A present? You've not been home a day and you're already showing gifts on me?"

Kevin chuckled, relieved Amber could joke. "They're actually things that belonged to you already. Wait here a moment while I get my duffle bag." Amber nodded and waited while Kevin went back inside to grab his bag. He returned outside with it and sat on the swing as he opened the bag and searched until he found the appropriate box.

"What's that?" Amber asked.

"Something that belongs to you," Kevin said. "Assuming you'll accept them again." Amber was confused momentarily until Kevin opened the box and she saw her bracelets. Both of them. The one made from garnets and the one from white gold and sea shells. She was speechless when she saw them, holding her hands over her mouth. "I know we're waiting, but I hoped you'd still accept my proposal."

"How did you…." she started, but she couldn't continue through the tears that were forming.

"A soldier we took prisoner had them. He claimed his brother had sent them to him as a gift to give to someone. Little piss ant's lucky I didn't kill him right there. Near had a heart attack when I saw these, but I still had that hope you were alive. I knew you were even if I didn't know where you were. Now that you're here and safe, I think these should go back to their rightful owner. Assuming you'll accept them again."

"Of course I will," Amber whimpered and held out both her left wrist so Kevin could put the bracelets on her.

"I didn't find your ring," Kevin said. "I'll get you a new one, I promise."

"You don't have to," Amber said.

"I want to," Kevin said and looked up at her with a genuine smile. "Just because we haven't set a date doesn't mean I can't spoil you, right? Don't tell your father, but I have a few clients in my back pocket that work for banks. I'm sure I could put in a good word for Levi. Get him a good job with a good salary. Just don't let it slip I did so."

"You're secret safe with me," Amber smiled and rubbed her eyes of her tears. Then she looked down at the bracelets she'd missed. Not because they were a material possession. It was what they represented. Having them back on was bring them that much closer to things being right again. Then she looked at him, thinking about something Edward had said. "Kevin?"

"Yes?"

"I don't….I don't suppose you might help me find work."

"I'll gladly help you and Anna start up another candle shop," Kevin said.

"I'm sure that'll be on the horizon," Amber said. "But you know mother and I will want to do it ourselves. I was…..I was hoping you might help her and I find work."

"Consider it done," Kevin smiled reassuringly. "If you want, I can speak with Alphonse and see what we can do about giving you a job at the law firm. Failing that, I can ask around."

"I'm not familiar with law," Amber said.

"It's alright," Kevin said. "You'd be a legal assistant if I got you a job working for me. Besides, you'll learn the ropes in no time with Olga teaching you."

"She's the one that speaks German?"

"She does," Kevin smiled, "But I'll warn you. She won't go easy on you. She'll speak German for you if you need, but she'll push you to use English. Don't be scared, though. She's a great teacher and she'll have you knowing the job like it's the back of your hand."

"You have so much confidence in me," Amber mumbled.

"Of course I do," Kevin said. "You have a business degree, you helped your mother run a business and you have experience with customers. With Olga helping you, this job will be easy for you."

Amber smiled timidly but then said, "I don't want you to give me special treatment, Kevin. I'm happy for the job, but I shouldn't be treated better for being your fiancé. It's not fair to your other employees."

"Don't worry," Kevin said. "I'll treat you as I'd treat any employee. I'll go back next Monday and I'll make arrangements. And I'll look for jobs for Levi to apply to and make a point to put in a good word for him. That'll be between us, though."

"Alright," Amber smiled and he took her in his arms for a hug.

Having finally talked about what they'd needed to and with Amber getting the concern she'd felt off her chest, they walked back inside to rejoin the festivities. They all spent hours together trying to help Kevin and the others relax and welcoming them home. They all remembered all too well when Kevin and Embry came home from the Great War. Or the First World War as it was growing to be known as. They were jumpy, quick to anger and swore constantly. It took a long time for them to get acclimated back into normal life, though Kevin attending university helped a great deal. Renesmee hoped returning to work would do the same. One of the children that were still awake had threw a ball against the wall and made a loud popping/slamming noise, and Embry near scared the child to death from yelling to keep it down after he and the others jumped from their chairs at the sound of the noise. The children were promptly taken of their ball privileges for the day and told to play with quieter toys.

Ada María stayed largely quiet through the evening. She didn't bother Nathan as he got to know his kids and didn't try to pester about them talking. She wanted to ask they talk as soon as possible, but she refrained. The waiting was tough, though. She kept feeling that anticipation the longer they didn't speak and she kept wondering what would happen. They'd said over letters they both just wanted to move forward, but that was over letter when Nathan was in the belly of the beast so to speak, possibly unsure if he'd even come home. Now that he was and they'd seen each other again, she wondered if that anger from when he first left might have resurfaced or reignited, compromising his resolve to put the past behind them. Regardless of the inner turmoil, Ada María kept quiet and waited while Nathan played with the kids. Jaedynn had fallen asleep earlier than all the other kids and Renesmee took over looking after her. Ivory was the next to fall. She fell asleep with her head on Nathan's knee while he told them a little about Berlin. Ariel and Scarlet were the last awake and even Ariel was fighting to stay up. Eventually, though, he fell asleep on the couch while Nathan was talking and Nathan didn't bother to wake him.

"Grandpa," Nathan said to Edward. "Is it alright if we leave the kids with you?"

"That's fine," Edward agreed and Nathan went ahead and carried Ariel and Ivory upstairs to an open bed. Tamara had fallen asleep in one of the couches and Nathan didn't want to bother her.

"I'm going back," Nathan said to Ada María. "You're coming with right?" Ada María nodded and stood from her section of the couch and followed Nathan. They all said goodnight to everyone and started walking down the hill back to Nathan's house. Neither of them spoke. It was a rather silent walk down the hill. Ada María stayed quiet, unsure if breaking the silence was appropriate. Eventually they finally reached the house and walked in through the kitchen door. "Coffee?" Nathan asked when they were inside.

"I'm alright," Ada María said. "There's left over from this morning if you'd like. I also have a bottle of wine in the ice box in case you're interested."

"No," Nathan said. "No alcohol right now." Nathan grabbed a mug, only after it took a minute to remember where they were, and poured himself some day old coffee. He noticed something about it. "Isn't this the stuff we'd get in Salvador?"

Ada María nodded, "Marcelo sends it. I can't get that roast here in the states."

"I'll have to send a thanks to Marcelo," Nathan said and gulped down the cold brew. A moment of silence passed between them before Nathan finally continued. "I guess we should get to the point." Ada María nodded in agreement. "I'm not even sure where to start."

"I'll start," Ada María said. "I know I've said this before, but I meant it when I told you Officer Acosta meant nothing to me. We had a preexisting agreement in which I slept with him in exchange for him keeping quiet about any knowledge that I was the one killing people once a month. He didn't know the purpose or the extent, he only figured out I was involved so we came to that agreement I mentioned. I'd not found anything wrong with this arrangement since it didn't particularly intrude on my life. When you came into the picture, that's when things changed. I had simply lost interest in Officer Acosta and had made an attempt to brush him off and let that be the end of it. When I tried that, he brought cops to the bar ready to start an investigation, effectively backing me into a corner. So I went along with it. That night you caught us, I was getting ready to kill him and be done with it."

"Why didn't you just tell me?" Nathan asked. "Why didn't you just tell me from the beginning that was what was going on?"

"Because I didn't want you to know," Ada María said. "I wanted to handle it myself. I was about to handle it myself. At the time, mine and Scarlet's relationship was such that she had nothing good to say about me. I feared I would give you reason for that discontent opinion of me to be validated."

"You really think if you'd just told me the truth that I wouldn't understand?" Nathan said.

"Maybe at the time," Ada María said. "I just didn't want to tell you. I was finally starting to accept what we had and enjoy things the way they were. I didn't want to risk ruining it. All the good it did," she mumbled. "My intent was not to lie to you. I'd meant to put that situation to rest and move forward with you."

Nathan signed and leaned against the counter, looking away. "I still wish you would have told me."

"At this point, Nathan, what does it matter?" Ada María said. "We're dancing circles around it and it's not helping. I can only tell you that I won't keep anything from you again. I have nothing to keep from you anymore anyway." Nathan was quiet a moment before Ada María continued. "I can't take back what happened, Nathan. No matter how much I wish I could. At this point, we owe it to one another to move on. We have a son together and I've been raising Jaedynn as if she were my own."

"I thought that wasn't the life you wanted," Nathan said.

"Things change, Nathan," Ada María said, perhaps more snappish than she'd intended. "I never wanted a relationship but it happened. I never wanted to fall in love with you but it happened. I never wanted to be a mother, but when Ariel was born, that's what I became and I love him. I love that boy more than I thought I'd love any child. When Jaedynn was born, I was shocked how much I loved her too. Whether or not it's the life I wanted before, it's the life I have now. More or less." Nathan saw the frustration in her eyes as she crossed her arms and leaned against the counter across from him.

"Are you happy?" Nathan asked.

"Not right now," Ada María answered, assuming he meant in the moment.

"I meant about what's happened. Are you happy raising our son and my daughter?"

"Not alone," Ada María said. "I thought we'd make things right between us. I raised our son by myself while you were away, but don't want to do it anymore. I will if you're saying that's how it's going to be, but that's not what I want. If that is how it's going to be, then just tell me now and we'll pack our things and return to Brazil." That seemed to grab Nathan's attention right away and made him extremely angry.

"No," Nathan said. "It's bad enough Ivory lives in Las Vegas. You're not taking Ariel away from me and I wouldn't make you raise our son alone. How dare you imply I would?" Ada María didn't answer. She felt her own blood begin boiling at his accusation but knew if she spoke, she'd say something she couldn't take back and make things worse. It seemed to do the trick because Nathan was rubbing his face and groaning. "I'm sorry," he said.

"I'm sorry too," Ada María said. "You'd said in your letters that you didn't want to fight about this anymore. Neither do I." There was a silence between them again until Nathan eventually broke it.

"That really hurt, Ada," Nathan said.

"I hadn't meant that I'd take Ariel away from you, Nathan. That boy adores you. I made sure of that."

"I appreciate that," Nathan said. "I was also referring to when I caught you with Officer Acosta. I know what you're saying and I understand why it was going on, but it still hurt. I love you, Ada. I never stopped loving you. I'd thought…it made me think I was wrong and you didn't love me after all."

"That's not true," Ada María said and approached Nathan so they were standing before one another. "He meant nothing to me. I loved you. Still love you. I'm sorry that it took so long for me to admit it to myself. I'm all the more sorry for hurting you no matter the misunderstanding with Officer Acosta. At this point, all I can do is ask you to forgive me."

Nathan and Ada María looked into one another's eyes. Black meeting black with equal intensity but there was something else there far more important: longing. They'd been apart for so long and missed each other so much. They both wanted to move past this and when they finally looked into each other's eyes, it became readily apparent just how true that was. Nathan's heart raced and he pulled his gaze from hers only to look her up and down. She was just as he remembered her when they'd first met. A vision in red literally from his dreams with her hair up in a bun, showing off her beautiful face.

"Remember when we first met?" Nathan asked suddenly after that period of silence. Ada María finally smiled.

"Of course I do," she said. "I remember when I saw you from the stage. At the time, I knew I had to have you. I didn't know what it was at the time, but even then there had been something special about you."

"I remember you gave me free wine and sat with me until you took me back to your dressing room. Then you tried to bite me."

"You bit me a few times I'll have you know," Ada María pointed out.

"Not with the intent of killing you," Nathan said with a shit eater grin. "That hurt my feelings something awful, you know."

"Well, I said I was sorry," Ada María said, happy they seemed to be returning to normal. Nathan chuckled while Ada María wrapped her arms around Nathan's neck while he wrapped his arms around her waist. "I missed you so much."

"I missed you too," Nathan said and started swaying her back and forth in his arms with his head rested against hers. "Even when I was mad, I missed you. Once we were in Germany, I missed you more than ever."

"There were night's I'd cry," Ada María admitted. "Not just because I missed you. Sometimes, news would reach home that this or that happened and I always had that sinking fear that you might not come home. I was scared I'd never see you again and that the last time we'd been together had been when you left. After Jae had died in the line of action and I saw how it hurt Natalie, it made the possibility that much more real." At the mention of Jae, Nathan tightened his hold just a little and put his head on her shoulder.

"I miss him so much," Nathan said in a shaky tone.

"I know," Ada María said and petted his hair gently.

Now she was rocking Nathan from side to side in a soothing motion. She gasped a little when Nathan kneeled down enough to put his hands on her thighs and bring her up so her legs were wrapped around him, but she found the touch comforting and held onto him like a lifeline. Then they were moving, but Ada María paid it no mind as she heard Nathan's footsteps as he moved up the stairs until they reached the master bedroom. Nathan sat on the edge of the bed with Ada María remaining in his arms. Nathan was the one rocking back and forth now, but it was to comfort himself. He rested his head on Ada María's breasts like a pillow and continued to hold her close. Ada María ran her fingers through Nathan's hair hoping to sooth him more. She wasn't sure how long they'd been like that but she stayed in his arms petting his head until he seemed to calm a little.

"Are you alright?" Ada María asked.

"I'm alright," Nathan said after a moment. He lifted his head to look at her. "How's Jaedynn been? Raising her I mean."

"Renesmee says she's a lot like you," Ada María said. "Jaedynn can't sit still to save her life."

Nathan smiled, "I noticed. I wasn't hurting her or anything when I was holding her was I?"

"Not at all," Ada María said. "If Jaedynn can be trusted for anything, it's to let you know when you've made her discontent. She's just a wiggler. Always has been. Even when Eloise was pregnant, she used to complain Jaedynn wouldn't give her a moment's peace. You would have loved feeling Jaedynn kick. One time, your grandfather played something on the piano and I could feel Jaedynn kicking like she was trying to dance."

Nathan chuckled, "Really?"

"Yeah," Ada María smiled. Nathan continued to smile, but it turned sad.

"I'm sorry I wasn't there for their births. Ariel's especially."

"You don't need to apologize," Ada María said. "You were at war. You're home now so we can be a family. Assuming that's what you want."

"It's what I've always wanted for us," Nathan said. "Even before our son was born." Ada María smiled at him and leaned down to kiss him. That single kiss was enough to light a fire in her core and she deepened the kiss immediately. Whether that fire was from them being apart so long or their love was irrelevant.

Nathan moved along with her, embracing the kiss and deepening it right along with her, dueling their tongues, nipping lips and fondling. When Nathan tasted her, the past melted away. The war melted away. Everything felt better and he finally felt completely home. His hands wandered up her bare thighs causing her dress to go up with him. His touch made her shiver and she reached down to the buttons of the uniform he still wore and undid each button. When his uniform was unbuttoned, he reached behind himself and pulled on the cuffs until the short was discarded. Ada María tugged at the white wife beater and helped him get that over his head so his chest was bare to her. The hard muscle beneath her fingers made Ada María salivate and Nathan took her mouth again in another passionate kiss.

Nathan reached behind her and pulled down the zipper of her dress and pulled it away from her so her chest was bare as his. Ada María tugged her dress over her head so that all she wore was her panties. Nathan touched her breasts like treasure. To him, they were like a beacon calling out to him. With her breasts in both hands, Nathan sucked each nipple tenderly and saved the taste of her skin like candy. She moaned at the tender suckling and let her head fall back. Her bun was heavy on her head and pulled down on her head, but she didn't reach up to undo the bun. She knew Nathan loved it when she wore them, even after all these years. Nathan kept up the ministrations and eventually Ada María leaned forward and sighed, resting her head on his shoulder while be pleasured her. When he finished with her breasts, Nathan held Ada María as he turned them over and rested her on the bed so he was atop her. He started kissing along her midriff down to her belly button and then to the bone of her full, wide hips.

"You're hips got wider," Nathan commented and kissed her skin.

"Has no one told you never tell a woman she's fat?"

"I said no such thing," Nathan chuckled. "I said your hips are wider. I thought maybe it was because of the pregnancy."

"A few things got bigger courtesy of that pregnancy," Ada María said. Nathan reached a hand up to her breasts again and gave them a gentle squeeze.

"I noticed," Nathan said with a smiled before taking his hands away and taking off her panties and her shoes. "I only commented because I like it."

"Do you now?" Ada María smiled.

"I do," Nathan smiled and leaned down so he was between her legs.

Ada María waited patiently in anticipation while Nathan kissed both her inner thighs for the sole purpose of cruelly teasing her. Then he slipped two fingers inside her before leaning his head forward to lick at her tender nub. Ada María released a high pitched sigh when she felt his tongue and she grabbed a hold of his short hair in her fingers while she reveled in the feeling of him. Nathan curled his fingers inside her to intensify the pleasure he administered to her. He'd use his teeth just hard enough to make her whimper before sucking and licking again with each curl of his fingers. Ada María's eyes rolled into the back of her head from the pleasure she felt. It had been too long and she quivered under his touch, desperate to feel him inside her.

"Nathan," Ada María cried as she felt her core tightened with need.

In response to her moaning his name, Nathan intensified the movement of his fingers and moved his tongue faster over her, causing her to whimper more as he brought her to climax. When it came, she nearly screamed and her hands went to his shoulders where she dug her nails ruthlessly into his skin and her whole body shook violently. He kept his fingers inside her with them curled until he felt the last quake of her orgasm pass. She finally gentled her clutch on his skin, allowing it to heal as he pulled his fingers out and licked them. Seeing Nathan do that set another fire inside her.

"Nathan," Ada María sighed and Nathan grinned.

"Not so impatient, Ada," he teased. "I haven't seen you let alone made love to you in five years. Let's make this last a while."

"You're being so cruel," Ada María said as he came onto the bed to hover above her.

"You keep complaining and I'll give you cruel," Nathan said as he started undoing the button and zipper of his pants. She smiled and bit her lip, not daring give him a reason to torture her in whatever way he'd prolong entering her.

Hoping to spur him on, she lifted her knees around his hips so her legs spread and licked her lips in a sensual manner she knew drove him mad. She bit her lip for good measure and it had the desired effect. He stopped any teasing, forced off his pants, shoes and socks and finally came atop her again to slip inside her. He was inside her in one hard stroke and she moaned from the feel of him. She couldn't believe she'd forgotten how good he felt. Nathan stayed still a moment when he'd slipped inside her. She was so warm and tight and his mind went blank. Ada María reached her hands up to his chest to feel his muscles and trembled. She trailed her hands over his chest and around his ribs down to his hips hoping to encourage him to move.

Nathan wrapped an arm around Ada María to bring them further onto the bed. Once they were fully on the bed, Nathan finally started moving, but it was maddeningly slow. It was a steady pace that was tender and made her sigh, but she wanted more. Rather than ask for him to go faster, Ada María took control and tossed Nathan only his back so she could ride atop him. He grabbed a hold of her hips while she bounced up and down on him. Her breasts bounced with her and soon Nathan reached his hands up to hold her breasts. Ada María placed her hands on Nathan's and kept moaning with each motion over Nathan's erection. Nathan laid back and enjoyed the view and the pleasure of her tight heat around him. It was no time before she started to feel her body coil tightly like a knot desperate for release. She sped up her movements, moaning all the while until she threw her head back and cried out his name. Nathan grabbed her hips tightly, guiding her up and down to ease her through her second orgasm. She went limp while Nathan rolled over atop her and kissed her. She kissed him back and wrapped her arms around his neck again.

"I love you," Ada María sighed against his lips when he lifted his head.

"I love you too," Nathan smiled. "Are you tired of me being so gentle?"

"Yes," she answered with a smile.

"Good," Nathan smiled back and then went onto his knees.

He grabbed and tossed her onto her stomach and pulled her hips up to her hands and knees before slipping back inside her. Ada María moaned from his forceful entry and kept herself steady while Nathan pounded into her over and over again just as she liked it. She clutched the sheets and moved back and forth on her knees to meet his thrusts to intensify their pleasure. Every moan from Ada María spurred Nathan on to go harder and faster. Nathan reached over and wrapped his hand around her neck to pull her up to his chest while he continued. He tightened his grip just enough and he heard her breathy giggle as her hands went up to hold Nathan's wrist. Then she lifted one hand up to lace her fingers through his short hair to rub his scalp to make him shiver. Nathan licked her ear and nipped at her to return the favor and make her shiver too.

She whimpered Nathan's name as he kept thrusting over and over with full force until he finally reached his own climax. His clutch on her tightened and for a moment she couldn't breathe, but it felt so good. Nathan reached a hand down between her legs to touch her intimately and help her to another final orgasm which came moment later with a whimper escaping her lips. She fell over onto her hands but was pulled back when Nathan left her body and then wrapped his arm around her and pull her down onto the bed alongside him. Ada María felt like jelly and turned in his arms so she was facing him and kissed him again. Nathan ran his hand over her hip tenderly while she kissed him.

"It's so good to be home," Nathan said. Ada María kissed him again and reached up to start undoing her bun. It took a minute to get all the pins out until her hair cascaded down. She laid back down and Nathan started playing with it. Ada María snuggled into Nathan's shoulder and breathed in his scent. It was comforting to be in his arms again and she nearly fell asleep right there, but Nathan wasn't asleep yet. She looked up at him and saw he was looking at her.

"I'm sorry," Ada María said. "For everything."

"I'm sorry too," Nathan said and hugged her tight and kissed her forehead. He looked at her left wrist seeing the bracelet he'd made her. "Did you like the bracelet when you saw it?"

"I adore it," Ada María smiled. "My mother was very impressed with it. She said had I not told her you'd made it, she'd mistake it for an unusual piece of Inca jewelry."

"I'll have to thank your mother for the compliment," Nathan smiled back. "Speaking of which, when am I finally meeting them?"

"I'll send a letter to Marcelo. He'll let mother and father know you're home and send them here to meet you. They've been here to meet Ariel."

"How did Ariel like his grandparents?" Nathan asked.

"He loves my mother, but she's very sweet. Father is harder to get along with. Ariel was scared of him at first, but by the end of their stay, Ariel was fond of my father. Your father didn't like him in the slightest."

"Oh, I know," Nathan chuckled. "As I recall, your father was insulting my dad for being Native American at every turn."

"He's a former royal figure, Nathan. He can't help himself," Ada María giggled and Nathan chuckled. "Ariel's never been to Brazil actually. Maybe we should all go."

"We wouldn't be able to stay," Nathan said.

"I know," Ada María said. Nathan noticed the sad tone.

"Do you miss Salvador?"

"Yes," Ada María said. "I miss the sunshine and the sandy beaches. I'll tell Ariel about it and he says he wants to go someday so long as you come with us."

"I don't mind going back for a visit," Nathan said. "What do you want to do about the bar?" he dared to ask.

"I don't know," Ada María said. "Marcelo's been running it for me. He takes his salary, making sure the employees are paid and the rest is kept aside for me. I am still the owner after all."

"Do you want to keep him as a manager?" Nathan asked. "We can always go every summer. Our summer I mean. Brazil's winter. I'll bet Ariel will like going once a year. How's his Portuguese?"

"Not as good as his Spanish," Ada María said. "Spanish is technically his first language. He spoke to his grandmother in Spanish and she used that to help him learn Quechua."

"How's his Quileute? Speaking of indigenous languages."

"Your father's made sure Ariel's Quileute is fluent," Ada María smiled. "Scarlet helped make sure he's fluent in Spanish."

"I overheard them talk in Spanish a lot," Nathan said.

"He almost didn't speak English very well because of that," Ada María giggled and then kissed his chest. Nathan held her tighter and kissed her forehead again.

"Do you mind if we hold off going to Brazil until next summer? I want to just be home for a while."

"Sure," Ada María said. "Maybe we should ask Tamara if she'd let us take Ivory with us to Brazil."

"We'll ask," Nathan said. He looked at the bracelet again. "Seeing as you're wearing the bracelet I made you, does that mean you accept my proposal?"

"Yes," Ada María nodded and rested her chin on his chest to look at him with a smile. Nathan smiled back at her and pulled her up for another kiss.

"We'll be the most unorthodox family known to man," Nathan said and Ada María giggled.

"A former prostitute bar owner and the Chief's son with four children by four women," Ada María teased. "Sounds like an interesting novel to me."

"Send it to Hollywood. Maybe we can be played by Joan Crawford and Clark Gable."

"I wouldn't mind being played by Joan Crawford. I enjoyed her in Mildred Pierce. White washing us a little, but what do you expect?"

"We got to watch Mildred Pierce before we came home," Nathan said. "Wasn't much of a hit with me. I kept wanting to give Veda a good hard 'Jacob' quality lesson in exactly how I felt about her behavior."

"How do you suppose your father would have been if Natalie behaved that way?"

"She'd not behave that way for long," Nathan said. "Dad never laid a hand on her, but Natalie was mostly well behaved and any time she did get in trouble, she only needed to give dad those puppy dog eyes and he'd melt to her will. If Natalie ever behaved like Veda, though, he'd never put up with it, no matter how much she whimpered and pouted. She'd have learned real quick not to act that way."

"I enjoyed it," Ada María said. "Besides, it's not as though Veda was the only terrible character."

"I know," Nathan said and kissed Ada María's head again. "We'll talk to mom in the morning about getting married. I hope you're alright with just a Quileute wedding."

"That's fine with me," Ada María said. "I love you."

"I love you too," Nathan whispered back to her. They kissed one more time before letting themselves go to sleep. The next morning, Nathan was woken up by unfamiliar arms. The only reason he didn't freak out is because her heard 'daddy' repeating in his ear.

"Daddy, daddy, wake up!" Ivory said, bouncing up and down on the bed after she noticed Nathan begin to stir. "Mommy said I could help her make breakfast! I helped her make scrambled eggs and orange juice!"

"That sounds like the best breakfast I've had in years," Nathan smiled and earned a cheer from Ivory while he sat up, being careful to keep himself under the covers. "Ivory, why don't you do daddy a favor and go downstairs and make him a plate of breakfast. We'll be downstairs in a minute okay?"

"Okay, daddy!" Ivory said and ran out of the room to return downstairs. Nathan heard Ada María groan a little.

"She's not usually so loud in the morning," Ada María grumbled.

"I'll need to make sure she doesn't do that," Nathan said. "I nearly hit her when I felt her touching me in my sleep. Had I not heard her call me 'daddy' I'd mistake her for an enemy."

Ada María rested her hand on Nathan's arm, "It'll get easier. We'll all help make this easier for you."

"I know," Nathan smiled weakly. "Still. After looking over my shoulder every second of the day for so long, it'll take a while to get over it."

"I know," Ada María smiled reassuringly and leaned up to give him a kiss.

They got dressed, Nathan feeling oddly comforted by being in his normal clothes and not his uniform, and went downstairs. There was a plate filled to the brim with eggs, a glass of orange juice and a cup of coffee on the table with far too much salt and pepper from what Nathan could smell and Ivory ran to his side and tugged on his hand telling him about his plate of food and how she'd made it specially for him. Nathan gave Ivory a kiss and a thank you and didn't voice a word of complaint for there being too much salt on the eggs. Tamara smiled at him appreciatively for that and Nathan kept Ivory occupied by having her talk about her 'Dragon's Den' back home while Ada María took Jaedynn from Scarlet so she could focus on Nathan while Ada María took care of the baby. He'd glance at Ada María every now and then to look at her hold Jaedynn. She was alert and would sometimes hit the table because she was bored. Ada María would gently tell her to stop and grab one of her wooden toys, specifically a carved princess doll he could tell was Jacob's craftsmanship.

Jaedynn's eyes lit up when she saw the princess toy and she'd grab at it and try to chew on it, but Ada María kept that to a minimum and would give Jaedynn her thumb to chew on. It made Nathan smile to see Ada María patiently allow Jaedynn to chew on her thumb while amusing her with the princess toy. She even smiled at Jaedynn. It was the most beautiful smile Nathan had ever seen from her. When he finished his breakfast, Ivory brought over Nathan's guitar and near shoved it at him eagerly, begging him to play for her since Tamara always told her Nathan was a good guitarist. It took a moment to remember since it had been so long, but soon he was playing a tango and Ivory danced around to it with Ada María showing her how. They didn't end up talking to Renesmee that morning about a moon ceremony. Rather, they spent the day together.

Kyle and Evalina spent the morning with Renesmee to get their moon ceremony reading. Dante and Amadora were there at the tiny fire pit with Kyle and Evalina. Dante gave his affirmation that he approved of the union and Renesmee performed the ceremony and found they needed to marry under the new moon. Theoretically, they could marry in a few days, but Evalina affirmed she wanted their Quileute wedding and Vatican ceremony within a month of each other, also insisting even if the ceremony would be during the day, she wanted the ceremony to be on a day where there would be a new moon come nightfall. Dante and the others confirmed they'd make the proper arrangements and Kyle would just need to provide documentation that he was baptized as Catholic and if he could provide a letter of recommendation from the priest, all the better. But if not, they'd take care of it.

Wanting to get things moving on the wedding, Kyle made the trip down to Hoquiam. He went to the bakery that he remembered from his childhood. When he stepped in, he was greeted by a woman that appeared to be nearing her fifties if she wasn't there already and she smiled welcomingly at him.

"Good afternoon, sir. What can I get started for you?"

"I'll have some coffee," Kyle said.

"Just coffee?"

"Yeah that's plenty. I actually came because I was hoping to procure some assistance with something."

"Well, you tell me what you need while I poor you that cup of coffee," she said with a smile and went about getting that coffee ready.

"I don't suppose you're Sherry are you?" Kyle said.

"Yes, sir, that's my name," she smiled.

"Your Grandpa was Mr. Locksley?"

"Yeah," she said, a little sad but smiling all the same. "That was my grandpa, God rest his soul. Did you know him?"

"Yes," Kyle said. "I don't suppose you'd remember me? I'm Kyle. My mother and father came here a few times when we needed a baptism."

"Kyle?" she said and brightened. "I remember your parents to be sure. I must say you grew up to be quite the handsome fella."

"You're too kind, Sherry," Kyle said. "Anyway, the reason I'm here is because I'm in need of some records that confirm I was baptized. I'm getting married and my fiancé wants to have a ceremony at the Vatican. We met in Italy and she used to attend that church when she lived in Rome."

"Oh my word," Sherry said. "Well, congratulations to you, Kyle. And thank you for your service. You must be over the moon to be home. My son actually served in Italy. My poor baby lost his leg and had to be sent home, but he's recovered and soldiering through. He works for a distributor in down."

"What's your son's name? Maybe I treated him."

"Treated…wait, were you Dr. Kyle Black?"

"Yeah," Kyle nodded.

"Oh," Sherry began to cry, ran around the counter and embraced Kyle suddenly and he was surprised by the interaction. "God bless you," she said. "My son told me what happened. He's lost his leg and suffered a terrible shrapnel wound and he was told he'd not survive, but that you'd taken him into treatment and made sure he lived. My son is Pvt. Rudolf Wesley. Do you remember him?" she asked as she looked up at him and let go of him.

"The name's familiar," Kyle said. "He had black hair, brown eyes, loves baseball?"

"Yes! That's my baby boy," Sherry smiled and rubbed her eyes. "My son told me all about you and I always wished I could find a way to thank you for saving my son's life."

"It's my pleasure, Sherry," Kyle said. "I'm just happy I was able to send him home to you alive."

"Me too," she said. "His wife, Madeline, was awfully happy about it too. They're expecting their first child in the fall and it's all thanks to you."

"I promise, I've contributed little to producing their first child," Kyle joked and Sherry laughed.

"Oh, you know what I mean," she said and rubbed away the tears of joy. The curtain to the kitchen came open as a young Native American man stepped out.

"You alright, Sherry?" the man asked.

"Oh, yes, Joe, I'm alright," she smiled. "Surely you remember Kyle? His parents came here a few times to baptize their children."

"You mean the Quileutes?" Joe asked and smiled. "It's good to see you. Our dads were friends as I recall. I remember him speaking well of Jacob. That's your dad's name, right?"

"Yes, that's my father. You wouldn't happen to be JoJo would you?"

Joe chuckled, "Some still call me that, yes. Most call me Joe these days."

"Taking up the reigns for your father?"

"Have been for a while," Joe said. "I'm afraid my father passed away about seven years ago."

"I'm sorry," Kyle said.

"Don't be," Joe smiled. "He died in his sleep warm in his bed. How fairs your father?"

"He's chief now," Kyle said.

"Good luck to him," Joe said. "I'm sure he'll do well by his tribe."

"Anyway, Doctor, as to your request. The priest that baptized you passed away about twenty years ago, but I'm sure there's a record that Father Devlin can dig up for you and write a good word for you."

"Thank you for your help, Sherry. And tell your son I said hello and congratulations on the baby."

"Surely you can join us for dinner," Sherry said. "Did you bring your fiancé?"

"I'm afraid I came myself," Kyle said. "But dinner sounds lovely. I'd be happy to join you."

"Then it's settled!" Sherry said and then looked at Joe. "Would you be a dear and bake up a cake? Doctor, is there any specific flavor you prefer?"

"You know what, make a vanilla cake with lots of lemon zest and a lemon glaze and that'll be plenty."

"Joe, do we have lemons?"

"We do," Joe nodded. "I'll get that whipped up for you."

"Thank you Joe. Would you like to join us tonight?"

"I'd like to, but I need to get home. Doty's making dumpling soup tonight and I'll not miss it for anything."

Sherry giggled, "That woman spoils you, Joe." Joe chuckled and retreated to the kitchen to get the cake started while Sherry handed Kyle his cup of coffee.

"How much do I owe you?" Kyle asked.

"It's on the house," she smiled. "Do you need directions to the church?"

"Yes, please," Kyle said.

Sherry gave him the directions he needed and he thanked her for the coffee and agreed to return to the bakery so he could join her back to her son's house for dinner. When Kyle reached the church, he met Father Devlin and explained his reason for visiting and was able to obtain a letter of recommendation from Father Devlin affirming Kyle had been baptized at that church and made a point to explain in his letter the number of lives Kyle saved, mentioning that he was well acquainted with the Locksleys and, by proxy, Ruddy Wesley and was as appreciative for the young man's return home. Kyle returned to the bakery, followed Sherry to her son's house for dinner and when Kyle saw Ruddy, he remembered the man instantly. The feeling was mutual and he got himself to the door and welcomed Kyle warmly and introduced him to a heavily pregnant Mrs. Wesley who nearly cried when she found out who Kyle was. Rudy remembered Evalina vaguely from Kyle's stories of her and was happy to hear they were going to get married.

"You were too serious sometimes, Doc," Rudy had said. "It's good to know you're finding some happiness. Do you have a picture?" Kyle nodded and pulled out a picture of her she'd sent him when he'd been stuck in Italy waiting to be sent back home. He loved that picture. Her hair was expertly curled just how she preferred her hair and she wore a bright smile, the broach he'd bought her and her bracelet was in view.

"She's beautiful," Sherry smiled when she saw the picture.

"Nice to see the woman that got you to relax a little," Rudy smiled.

Kyle enjoyed stayed well into the night talking and enjoying the lemon cake Joe had made and some coffee. He'd forgotten that Rudy smoked like a chimney but was relieved Mrs. Wesley wasn't smoking at least. He finally left when Mrs. Wesley could barely remain awake and agreed to go to the hotel for the night. Upon Sherry's insistence, Kyle made sure to stop by the bakery again the next morning to get another free coffee and a pastry for his trip back to Forks and when he returned home, he gave the recommendation he'd obtained to Dante. Kyle wasn't thrilled when Dante said they'd all be returning to Italy for a while, Evalina included, to make arrangements for the wedding at Vatican city. Once they had a day secured, they'd let him know and the Quileute ceremony could be planned for the month before. Evalina requested she be able to stay in Washington, but Dante insisted, Amadora and Afton in agreement, that Evalina remaining in Washington alone when she and Kyle weren't married yet wasn't appropriate. She'd attempted to convince Dante to let Dimitri and Heidi remain in Washington with her, but Dante wouldn't cave.

Since Dante would not be moved, Kyle and Evalina enjoyed their remaining week together before they'd leave. Her family would keep a small distance, but they were always present when Kyle and Evalina were on a date. When they went to a movie together, they were all one row behind them at the theatre. When Kyle took her to Seattle for a walk through the park, they were close behind enjoying the scenery and making sure the date never exceeded hand holding. In an effort to give Evalina a gift as a form of 'Until I see you Again' and, if he was honest, to impress Dante, Kyle bought Evalina an engagement ring while they were in Seattle. It was a marquise cut diamond with small round diamonds surrounding the bigger stone in yellow gold and they even bought their matching wedding bands while they were there. When it was the end of the week and they were set to leave, Kyle went with them to the train station and gave Evalina a long hug before reluctantly letting her go. She promised they could always write and Karenin would keep up as their carrier pigeon and promised she'd write him as soon as they returned to Italy. Dante wanted to move the family to Rome and hoped he could join an orchestra like the one in Florence.

Monday finally came and as promised, Kevin returned to work, suit and all, like nothing happened. Levi promised before Kevin left that he'd start looking for work that day and Kevin mentioned a few banks in the city that he was familiar with, not mentioning he represented a few people at those banks and could easily call in a favor. Not that it would be a loss for those banks. Levi knew what he was doing. Perhaps he'd need to become acclimated to American financial laws that might be different from Germany, but he'd be able to figure that out easily enough. Kevin stepped into the office building and was hoping to see Olga, but when he came, it wasn't Olga. It was a different woman. She was a young brunette woman who, when she looked up at him, smiled welcomingly at him from her type writer.

"Good morning, sir," she said. "Did you have an appointment with Mr. Heidelberg or Mr. Foster?"

"I'm one of the owners, actually," Kevin said. "Kevin Black."

"Oh, yes!" she said and stood up, straightened her pencil skirt and bowed her head a little. "Mr. Heidelberg said you were returning today. It's good to welcome you back Mr. Black. My name is Linda Sanders. I'm the Legal Assistant here at Heidelberg and Black."

"Where's Olga?"

"She's retired," Linda said. "She and her husband had a baby and she decided to be home with the baby. You should have seen her little boy. Handsomest little thing with chubby, pinchable cheeks. She trained me to take over for her once she had the baby."

"I see," Kevin said. "I'm happy to hear she's happy. How long have you been with us, Miss Sanders?"

"About 2 years," she said. "I'll have to send her a note telling her you've come home. She was so worried about you."

"Please do," Kevin smiled. "Was there anything Alphonse said he wanted you to hand over to me when I got here?"

"Yes, there was," she said and went to her desk and pulled open a door and pulled out envelopes. She returned to him and handed them over. "These were clients that insisted their cases be handed over to you once they found out the war was over. They've been a little cranky since the war ended waiting for you, but once you call them, I'm sure they'll perk right up."

"I'll get to work on that," Kevin accepted. "Actually, Linda, there's something I'd like you to do."

"What's that, Mr. Black?"

"I need to put in a good word for someone. He was an accountant back in Germany and had been an accounted in Paris as well."

"In Germany?" Linda asked. The hesitancy in her voice wasn't lost on Kevin.

"Yes, he's German born. He was fortunate enough to escape the concentration camp at Auschwitz."

Her eyes flew open, "Oh my Lord. He survived that dreadful place? I've heard so much about it from the papers. The Soviets liberated it, no? Oh, good God, to have been subjected to such a vile place."

"Indeed," Kevin said. "Obviously, he wants to rebuild his life here in America and I'd prefer to make this as easy on him as possible. I recommended a few of our clients and I expect he'll go to those places today."

"Absolutely, Mr. Black. Just let me know what message to give which of our clients and I'll have that done within the hour."

"Thank you, Linda," Kevin smiled. "One last thing. How is your work load?"

"Nothing I can't handle, Mr. Black," Linda answered confidently. "You can count on me."

"I'm happy to hear it," Kevin said. "However, there's another that I want to ensure is employed. She's a survivor of the camps as well. She's also my fiancé."

"Oh," Linda said. "The poor thing. I recall hearing from Olga about you having a fiancé. I admit, it sounds so romantic. Saving her from those dreadful camps."

"I suppose it does sound romantic," Kevin said. "Though I'd prefer she'd never been put in that situation at all. Anyway, I want to bring her on to work for us. Help her rebuild her life too. Are you comfortable in the job to train her?"

"Of course," Linda smiled kindly. "I'll happily train her."

"Good," Kevin smiled. "I don't suppose you speak German do you?"

"I'm afraid not," Linda lost her smile a little. "I speak a little Swedish from my mother's side, but I'm not familiar with German. Is that the only language she knows?"

"She's improved a lot in English. You might just need to be a little more patient. If there's anything you're explaining that she needs translated, come grab me or Alphonse and we'll translate as needed. I don't anticipate it'll be needed, but we're here if it's needed."

"Absolutely," Linda said. "When does she start?"

"We'll wait until Monday next week. Give us time to get her a desk and give you time to decide an appropriate entry work load for her. She'll largely help me, so we can start with getting her familiar with cases I'm handling."

"That should be a good place to start," Linda agreed. "Since you just got back, your caseload isn't too much to throw at her. If you like, once I get her trained, I can focus on Mr. Heidelberg's and Mr. Foster's cases."

"Thank you, Linda," Kevin smiled. "I'm going to speak with Alphonse a moment about my fiancé working for us and getting some necessities in for her. Her name's Amber Dymek for your reference."

"Thank you, Mr. Black," Linda smiled back. Linda returned to her desk and got back to what she'd been working on before while Kevin went to Alphonse's office, letting himself in. Alphonse was already looking through some paperwork when Kevin came in.

"Morning Alphonse," Kevin said.

"Welcome back," Alphonse said. "Are you relieved to be back?"

"I'll take this over France and Germany any fucking day," Kevin joked. "Going forward, I'd say my life will be damn right cushy."

Alphonse chuckled, "Doesn't that sound nice?"

"So where's Foster?"

"He'll be late today," Alphonse said. "Anastasia and her mother are buckling down to pick a venue and they've dragged Hal along to offer his opinion. I just about laughed out loud when they suggested that."

"Anywhere in particular they're looking at?" Kevin asked.

"I didn't ask," Alphonse said. "I just told Anastasia to tell me how much once she knew and daddy would write the check."

"Spineless," Kevin chuckled.

"When you have a daughter, Kevin," Alphonse warned menacingly. "When you have a daughter."

Kevin chuckled a little more before getting to the reason for coming into Alphonse's office. "As to why I came in here. I'm planning to give Amber a job as my legal assistant."

"Do we need a second one? Linda seems to handle her work load just fine. You got to meet her, right?"

"I did and I spoke with her," Kevin said. "I'm sure she'll be able to help Amber learn the tricks of the trade. She asked me if I'd help her get a job and under the circumstances, I'd prefer she work for me. At least for now."

"So she was in those camps, then?" Alphonse asked. "I'd read it was where the Nazis were keeping Jews."

"Among others, but yes," Kevin said. "I found her at Dachau. They'd been experimenting on her." Kevin took a deep breath to recollect. "She's been through a lot. She's had a year since I got her out and sent her here to try getting adjusted, but my grandpa tells me she's kept largely to herself and she's having a hard time moving past what happened. When she asked for a job, I told her I'd get her one working for me."

"I see," Alphonse said. "Well, it's not as though we can't afford a new Legal Assistant. If there's any good that's come from this war, it's a boom in the economy. When would she start?"

"Next Monday," Kevin said. "I'll get a desk for her and anything else she'll need. She'll largely work for me so she'll help me with my cases that way Linda can focus on you and Foster."

"Speaking of which, did Linda give you those case loads that requested you?"

Kevin smiled and held the pile in view, "She certainly did. I'll get to work on those today."

Alphonse smiled, "It's good to have you back, Kevin."

"It's good to be home," Kevin answered and finally left Alphonse's office to return to his own.

When Kevin stepped into his office, it was a strange relief that overtook him. He recalled several stressful days in this office. Working over night not even going home, not taking home any of his pay to keep their young business afloat, difficult clients and overwhelming victories and even losses. But when he looked back on the past several years of the war, it was like walking into a field of flowers by comparison. He looked at his desk, the bookshelves of legal books, the window view of the city outside, and then, as a present from Alphonse Kevin could tell, a bottle of bourbon with a little tie and note that said welcome home. It made him smile to see it.

After taking in the view, Kevin went to his desk and looked through their clientele to find the banks he knew they represented that Kevin had told Levi about and wrote them down as well as their numbers. He wrote down bullet points of what to say and brought that list to Linda to call on while he got himself to work on the cases she'd given him. As she promised she would, she had that done within the hour and went into Kevin's office to let him know their clients had seemed receptive. As Kevin was getting ready to leave for the day, Alphonse stepped into his office with two glasses in hand.

"You saw the Bourbon I hope," Alphonse said.

"I did," Kevin smiled and opened the bottle. "We can share a glass before I leave."

"How was your first day back?" Alphonse smiled.

"Like a field of roses," Kevin said and made Alphonse chuckle. Kevin poured each of them a glass and they held them up.

"Cheers to you coming home," Alphonse said and they took a sip from their glasses. "I hope this doesn't sound overly sentimental, but I really did miss you. Not just for work and that nonsense, but because I missed you being around. There was a grey cloud over my head while you were away."

"It seemed like grey clouds followed me all through Europe," Kevin said. "We were stuck in England for so long before we broke through to France." Kevin thought about that day when they entered the beach. D-Day as it was becoming known. Then he thought of the hedge groves and the disaster that had been before retreating for northern France again only to come back but better prepared and with the Germans adequately distracted. Then he remembered Paris and his heart seized. "Jae was killed."

"I beg pardon?"

"My sister's husband," Kevin said. "I believe you've met him before. He was killed in the line of duty."

"Was Jae the friendly man everyone loved?" Kevin nodded and Alphonse sighed. "I'm very sorry. For you and for your sister. What happened to him?"

"We were running for cover away from a German sniper. Travis, my cousin you'd met, was shot in the leg when we were running away."

"Is he alright?" Alphonse asked.

"Jae ran back to get him. Travis healed alright. But when Jae got Travis under cover, the sniper shot him in the neck and heart." Kevin was silent a moment as the memory choked him. "I've never seen Embry cry like that. When Jae fell, Embry screamed his name so many times. Jae looked so scared. I can only imagine what he'd been thinking. Probably about Natalie and the kids." Kevin stopped a moment to rub his eyes. "Natalie misses him so much. I knew she would be in mourning after his death, but even after two years, she's just a shell. She keeps all his pictures in their room and his flag above them. It's like she has a little altar to him. And she reads his letters before bed every night."

"She's just torturing herself by doing that," Alphonse said.

"I know," Kevin said. "We're trying to get her to stop, but she won't. She keeps having nightmares and she's not eating. Dad will force her to eat as best he can, but it's a chore sometimes."

"I say keep being patient with her," Alphonse said. "The way you spoke of Jae, it's no wonder she adored him so. To love a man that much and have children with him after years together, it's no wonder his death is excruciating for her."

"It is for all of us," Kevin said. "We're worried about JJ too. He's eating more than Natalie, but he's getting too thin too. He refused any money we sent him and he took over Jae's job at the General Store. He's a strong kid, but it seems as though he's forcing what happened between his toes and avoiding it."

"Can you blame the boy?" Alphonse asked. "A boy that looked up to his father losing him at such a tender age?"

"He's trying to do what Jae said to: take care of your mother and siblings while I'm away. I'm afraid he's taken the request to close to heart. Jae would be proud of that boy, but I know this isn't what he wanted for JJ."

"I'm sure," Alphonse said. "But it sounds like JJ is taking up his father's mantel. He sounds like a brave young man."

Kevin smiled a little, "He did learn from the best." Alphonse smiled reassuringly and rose his glass again.

"To Jae Dauer," Alphonse said. "A hero amongst men, loved by those that knew him. He will be missed."

Kevin smiled weakly and held up his glass, "Amen to that."

Kevin stayed at the office a while longer. Alphonse offered to take Kevin to dinner, but he declined for the night. However, he suggested they reschedule for Friday evening so Kevin could bring Amber and perhaps formally introduce her to everyone so she'd feel more comfortable come Monday when she'd start. By the time Kevin returned home, Anna and Amber were already getting dinner ready though Levi hadn't returned home yet. When he came in through the front door, Amber looked up from setting up the dinner table and smiled at him.

"How did you like your first day back?" Amber asked.

"Like a breath of fresh air," Kevin smiled and went to his office to discard his briefcase before walking over to the dinner table to help with the silverware. "I admit I forgot I had all these."

"Mom loves them," Amber said. "She told your aunts that when daddy gets a job and finds us a house that she'd like a set just like this one."

"I'm sure they'll accommodate her," Kevin chuckled. "When Levi's ready to look, I'll help you find a house in the neighborhood."

"That's very sweet Kevin, but I doubt we'll be able to afford a home in this neighborhood," Anna said as she brought a giant pot of roast and potatoes to the table. "Are there neighborhoods near here that are a little less expensive?"

"I'm sure we'll find something," Kevin smiled reassuringly. They could always talk about homes later. He wanted nothing more than for Anna and Levi to be close for when the time did finally come for Amber and Kevin to marry and start a family. "I just thought, when it's time for grandchildren, that it would be nice for them to be able to just walk down the street to grandma and grandpa's house."

Anna giggled at the thought and even Amber smiled a little, "Oh, that would be wonderful," Anna answered. "They can just run to us when they want. You used to do that when your grandma was alive. Remember Amber?"

"I remember," Amber smiled. "I was so sad when she passed away."

"I was too, dear," Anna said. "She adored you. You should have seen it, Kevin. My mother used to sew clothing for Amber and she'd complain that Amber was growing faster than her fingers could sew."

Kevin chuckled, "I can picture it. If myself and my siblings were an indication, you'll suffer no such rush. Your grandchildren will grow normally."

"Excellent news," Anna chirped cheerfully as she ran to get the gravy she'd made. "Levi called us about a half hour ago and she'd he'd be home soon. He said he was taking the bus."

"I was still at the office," Kevin said. "I'll make sure he has my office number so he can call me to pick him up from now on. By the smell of this, he'll want to get home soon."

"Oh, no, I hope he'll be home before this gets cold," Anna said. "But Levi did give us good news! He went to those banks and firms you'd told him about and all of them were very eager to speak with him. Just about all of them said they'd call him tomorrow with an offer and give him until Friday to let them know if he accepts their offers. Levi was so excited."

Kevin grinned, "Excellent news indeed." Anna glanced at Kevin suspiciously and leaned her chin on her hands.

"Kevin, dearest," she said, "you wouldn't happen to be responsible for this good luck would you?"

"I don't know what you're talking about, Anna," Kevin smiled. "I haven't done a thing."

Anna giggled, "If you say so. No matter. Levi said he'd see who provided the best offer and make a decision much sooner than Friday. I imagine he'll want you to teach him how to drive."

"I'd be delighted to," Kevin said. "I can teach you both too if you'd like."

"Yes, that would be helpful," Anna nodded. "So Amber, once your father is employed, we'll be able to start saving up for the wedding." Amber was quiet a moment. "I just wish you could wear my dress," Anna lamented.

"It'll be alright," Amber said lightly.

"We'll worry about a wedding later," Kevin added. "First thing's first. Let's get all of you comfortable and acclimated to the American way of life. A wedding will come when the time's right."

"You're right," Anna said. "We'll need the funds first and foremost." Kevin was about to say he'd gladly pay for the wedding when the front door opened and Levi stepped in. "There you are, Levi," Anna smiled. "You're just in time for dinner."

"Good," Levi smiled. "I'm famished. It's been a long day of interviews."

"I was telling Kevin all about how you were well accepted with plenty of prospects on the horizon," Anna said as she started to plate up dinner.

"Yes, today went very well," Levi said. "I appreciate you making a recommendation on my behalf."

"I did no such thing," Kevin smiled. "It was all you."

"No need to be coy, Kevin. They told me," Levi chuckled. "They all spoke highly of you."

"So long as it's helped," Kevin said. "So they'll give you their offers tomorrow?"

"Yes, tomorrow," Levi nodded. "I'll use that day to think it over and call them all with my decision by the next day."

"That's good news," Kevin said.

"With a steady income, I can start looking into a house. Also," Levi said. "Over the weekend, Kevin, would you mind helping me learn to drive? I imagine a car will be an easier purchase at the moment."

"It will be," Kevin smiled. "I'll start teaching you and by the time you can get a car, you'll be an expert. We'll handle any other documentation for it later."

"I appreciate it, Kevin," Levi said. "So Anna, what did you and Amber do today?"

"We sold some of Amber's soaps at the local department store," Anna said. "We were just outside and they were well received. She even carved a few for people to watch. I think it bolstered sales. With any luck, I think Amber and I could open another shop together."

"Kevin," Amber said, grabbing his attention. "Is everything alright for me to work for you at the Law Firm?"

"You start Monday," Kevin smiled.

"Oh, good, this'll do you some good," Anna smiled. "Getting out like that will help you I think. So what will Amber be doing?"

"She'll be a legal assistant," Kevin said. "I'm afraid Olga's retired after having a baby, but the young woman that works there now will be able to train you. Her name's Linda and she's very nice. In fact, Alphonse offered to take me to dinner as a welcome home. I suggested that several of us go to dinner and you could come with. That way you can meet everyone before you start on Monday."

"That sounds like a lovely idea," Anna agreed.

"Thank you, Kevin," Amber smiled and Kevin smiled back. They ate dinner together, though Amber didn't have a plate, and after dinner, Kevin went to his office to work while Levi relaxed on the couch and read the paper. Amber and Anna got everything cleaned up after which Anna joined Levi on the couch to reach a book. Amber went to Kevin's office with some coffee she'd made for everyone. "I brought you coffee," she said, making him look up at her from his work.

"Thank you," Kevin said and accepted the mug. "Perfect timing. I was starting to feel tired."

Amber smiled a little. "I thought I might ask if there's anything you wanted me to help you with. Get a head start on my training."

"I'm alright," Kevin said. "I only brought one case home and it'll be settled out of court. Just a financial dispute. You'll answer phones, help keep track of my schedule so clients get schedule appointments with me and general customer service. Nothing you didn't already do at the Candle shop back in Germany. Depending on the seriousness of a case, you may have to obtain documentation from police when needed."

"Do you generally handle criminal cases like that?"

"They aren't typical, but we've done them," Kevin said. "We handled some divorce cases after the crash to keep us above water. Those were a nightmare, though. In the United States, someone needs to be at fault. So it would usually turn into a he said she said about who abused who when the real problem was they just weren't in love anymore."

"So you typically handle business cases?"

"Yeah," Kevin nodded. "Linda will mostly help you with becoming familiar with clientele."

"Alright," Amber answered nervously. "Will I only be assisting you?"

"At least for now," Kevin said. "Right now my case load is pretty low and manageable. It'll give you a chance get used to working at the law firm. By the time word gets around that I've returned, my case load will gradually increase and Linda will be glad for the help. Once you're comfortable, you'll be helping Linda with Alphonse and Harold's cases too."

"Okay," Amber said and started staring at her fingers. "You promise not to give me special treatment?"

"I promise I'll treat you as I'd treat any employee," Kevin said. "Fairly."

Amber smiled, "I appreciate it." Another brief moment passed. "And thank you for helping with mom. I haven't really told her about….you know."

"Not being ready to marry just yet?" Kevin asked. "I'm happy to help. I just want to make this easier for you."

"Thank you," Amber said. "I promise, we'll get married soon."

"Take your time, Amber," Kevin reassured. "We have time."

"We do," Amber said, suddenly saddened. "My parents don't. I want us to get married so I can give them grandchildren, but-"

"They'll meet their grandkids, Amber," Kevin smiled. "You have my word. Right now, it's more important that you feel like yourself again."

Amber smiled a little and looked at her hands again. "Thank you for being so patient."

"You're worth waiting for, Amber," Kevin smiled. "You always have been." Amber looked a little teary eyed as she smiled. Kevin took a hold of her left hand down at her bare left finger. He'd take care of before her birthday. Then he gave her hand a tender kiss. "I love you, Amber. Always remember that."

"I love you too," Amber answered. "I actually wanted to carve a candle. Would you want to join me?"

"I think I can give this a rest for the evening," Kevin agreed and left his office with Amber and went to the candle room, leaving the door wide open so Levi and Anna could see inside, and they sat together while Amber worked. "It's been so long since we've done something like this," Kevin said.

"It has," Amber nodded. "I remember how you used to read to me while I carved candles and soaps or painted."

"Were you in the mood for anything in particular?" Kevin asked.

"Not tonight," Amber said. "I'll be done after this. I'm just making a candle for a woman at the Synagogue."

"How do you and your parents like that synagogue?"

"We've liked it," Amber said. "Rabi Kowalski is very nice. The Synagogue is beautiful too."

"It is," Kevin said. "When it was finished, I'd told him that I looked forward to marrying you there. He asked if I were Jewish to which I'd told him no and he said I'd best look elsewhere to marry you."

Amber smiled, "That sounds like him. We're still working on him, but he's softening. He's aware of all you did."

"Should I return to sending him gift baskets?" Kevin asked and Amber smiled.

"Couldn't hurt," Amber smiled. "He'll never turn down cigarettes and Howard mints. Lucky Strikes."

"I'll send him a basket of cigarettes and mints then," Kevin smiled. "Odd combination, but whatever gets him to agree to marry us."

Amber smiled, "Daddy will keep schmoozing him on our behalf." Kevin smiled back at her as she dipped the finished candle in the well of water to cool it and then hung it to let it dry. "Do you know if we're going to a fancy restaurant or somewhere more casual?"

"Fancy," Kevin warned. "I love Alphonse like a brother, but if there's one downfall to his character, it's that he's a bit of a snob."

"I gathered that," Amber said. "I admit, in the brief time I'd met Anastasia I found her to be…"

"Now, now, she's a nice girl," Kevin defended. "Alphonse and Ana raised her expensively but she's a good girl, I promise."

"You know her better than I do," Amber amicably. "I assume once I'm at the Law Firm I'll be seeing quite a bit of her?"

"Most likely," Kevin nodded. "She was already a frequent visitor but with Harold in the picture, I imagine it'll be all the more often."

"How do you like Harold so far?"

"I didn't get a chance to see him today," Kevin said. "Apparently Anastasia and her mother were dragging the poor man around to look at reception venues."

"When's the wedding going to be?"

"I haven't been told yet," Kevin said. "I just know we'll be invited." Then there was a gentle knock on the mantle of the door to the room and they looked up to see Levi.

"Anna and I are going to bed," Levi said. "Is that candle alright to dip in the varnish?"

Amber looked at the candle and nodded, "It's dry. I'll get that varnished and go off to bed. Kevin, are you staying up to work or going to bed?"

"I'll work a little longer," Kevin said. "I'll keep it down." Levi nodded and walked away and up the stairs with Anna to the spare bedroom they had been using. Amber varnished the candle and let it hang so it could dry while Kevin went off to his office again. Just as he'd settled in and started working again, Amber stepped into his office standing beside his desk.

"Did you want me to get you fresh coffee?"

"I'll be alright," Kevin smiled. "Sleep tight, okay Amber?"

"You too," Amber smiled. She surprised him a little and leaned down to kiss his lips briefly. It was a brief kiss, but it was gentle and meaningful. "Good night."

"Good night, Amber. I love you," Kevin said.

"I love you too," Amber answered and walked away to go to bed while Kevin remained in his office.
