Chapter 125
Since getting to have dinner with Arturo and his wife and mother, Salem had not been able to see them again for quite a while. He and the other men were kept on the sub so they were ready for anything. The atmosphere in Cuba was stressful to put the situation mildly and the revolutionaries pushing communism were considered a real threat and they needed to be ready. Salem was happy, at least, when mail was brought it to the men on the sub and Salem got all the letters from home. He started with JJ's letter which included a number of pictures of the tattoos that everyone got mimicking the one Salem had gotten and appreciating all the variety among those that had done something slightly different. When he finally got to Natalie's letter, the first thing he read was: "Did you really get 'Welcome Aboard' tattooed above your groin? For God's sake, Salem, what the hell is wrong with you! What happens when you get married and you have to explain that to your wife?"
JJ had explained where they'd all gone to get the tattoo so he wasn't all that surprised Natalie found out. She did go into other matters like updates with the family, how their days have been, asking how he's doing and so on. When writing Natalie back, he answered all her questions but saved the matter of his first tattoo, he kept his answer brief: "Don't worry about the tattoo, mom. The woman I marry will think it's funny."
Back home in Washington, things were rather mundane and that was the preferred. Knowing Salem was currently stationed in Cuba, she was constantly listening to the news for any information of what's going on, but the information provided wasn't usually very detailed and she knew Salem wasn't at liberty to discuss the matter with her except tell her he's alright. She would have to make do with that update but it didn't stop her from worrying. She at least smiled when Salem proclaimed the woman he married would think his obscene tattoo was funny. She wasn't counting on it, but for his sake she hoped he was right. Either that or the woman he married would be generous and forgive the tattoo regardless of what it reasonably implied.
When the new school year started for Heather, as they'd done before, Amber, Kevin and Embry were there to drop her off for her first day of school. She wasn't nearly so nervous for her first day this time around. She had friends that she knew and was excited to spend the day with them again after so many had been unavailable over the summer from being on vacation. Sadly, though, that same day they dropped Heather off at school, Kevin had to rush to the airport to leave for New York. Alphonse had officially moved to New York a long time ago really only coming to Washington for holidays or just when he felt like it to visit his daughter and grandson. Otherwise, he was in New York acting as the head of that office so Kevin and Harold no longer needed to be there like clockwork for six month stints, but they both still needed to go depending on cases they were handling. Kevin needed to go to New York for a Fraud case that he was specially requested for and it was finally going before a judge.
"I'll call you as soon as I get to New York," Kevin promised Amber after they'd made it to the Candle shop and was about to drop her off.
"Do you know how long you'll be gone?"
"No more than two months," Kevin reassured. He looked at Levi who was half-asleep half-awake in Amber's arms. "You and your sister behave yourselves while I'm gone, got it? I find out you're giving your mother trouble, you'll hear from me," Kevin teased and patted Levi's back. He'd recently turned one and was already getting so big. Levi grumbled a little when Kevin started patting him and reached for Kevin. He took the boy in his arms and hugged him and kissed his cheek.
"We'll all miss you," Amber smiled.
"I'll miss you too," Kevin said to Amber and Levi. "If you need me to come home, I'm a call away."
"I know," Amber said and leaned over to give Kevin a kiss. "Good luck in court."
"Thanks. I'll need it," Kevin chuckled and kissed her back. He got out of the car and helped Amber out. He followed her into the shop, said goodbye to Anna who also wished him luck, he gave Amber one more kiss and handed Levi over to her so he could leave for the airport.
"He doesn't look as though he's eager for this case," Anna said when Kevin was gone.
"To quote Kevin, he referred to his client as, 'a weasel trying to convince you he's a lamb'. Now I thought he meant the man was a wolf in sheep's clothing but he explained to call the man a wolf would imply some about of viciousness that's well hidden. He said the man is rather transparent and isn't good at convincing those around him that he's not a conman. I saw a picture of this man in the paper Kevin gets from New York and I'm inclined to agree."
"I don't know how he does it," Anna said. "He's such a good man yet he has to defend such horrible people."
"Being horrible doesn't exempt people from a fair trial or access to a good lawyer. As Kevin's put it before, it's not his job to be a moral judge. His job is to present reasonable doubt or prove someone guilty. It just depends which side he's put on."
"Can you give me Levi?" Anna held out her arms to Amber and she passed Levi over to her. "Now, Mein wunderschöner Enkel, you listen to your grandma: your daddy makes good money and has a good job and is a good husband and provider so you respect him, but don't become a lawyer like your father. You become an accountant like your grandpa."
Amber giggled and let Anna keep Levi with her while Amber went to the candle room to start filling custom orders. Levi spent most of the day up front with Anna receiving his adoring fans as foot traffic came into the shop. JJ started would bring Jae Sun into the General Store with him on weekends sometimes, but Eun Mi occupied most of the boy's day with having him practice Hangul and, as he'd requested, teaching him Japanese with Kai's assistance. Thankfully, because he didn't need to learn a whole new grammar structure, it was just a matter of teaching Jae Sun how to say things in Japanese compared to Korean. But aside from his language lessons, he was still a bit young to start at the tribal school. That didn't stop Eun Mi from sending the boy to spend a few hours with his great grandparents or grandparents where either Renesmee or Suerro would typically sneak lessons in for him but ensure they kept his attention. Most of JJ's attention was kept on Hailey. He'd already been concerned, but things were getting worse.
One day in September when he came into work, Hailey wasn't there. JJ waited about ten minutes but after that, he rushed to Hailey's house in a panic. He didn't even bother locking the shop back up. When he arrived, he knocked first and waited a minute without an answer. When he didn't get an answer, he took out his key, opened the door and let himself into the house. He called Hailey's name when he didn't see him or Leah downstairs, but then he heard crying. So he rushed upstairs and saw Hailey still in his pajamas at his bedside holding Leah's hand. JJ realized in an instant what happened. Leah had passed away in her sleep. Hailey hadn't even lifted his head to look at JJ when he'd come upstairs but JJ went to Hailey's side and kneeled beside him. They didn't say anything for a very long time. He only left the house after he'd gotten Hailey downstairs to get him some coffee and let him know he'd run to the doctor so they could retrieve Leah's body and they could make the funeral arrangements. But first, he called his mother's house.
"Rouge residence," Natalie answered.
"Mom, it's JJ," he said. "Leah passed away last night."
"Leah did?" Natalie asked after a painful silence. "Is Hailey alright?"
"He's really upset. I finally got him downstairs and gave him some coffee. I'm going to the doctor to have someone get Leah's body so we can make the funeral arrangements. Let everyone know what's happened. I know Leah has a small will so we'll know for sure, but I'm pretty sure she wants to be buried here in Forks."
"Yeah, I think she said she wanted her and Hailey to be buried together," Natalie agreed. He heard the tears in her voice but she did her best to stay calm. "I'll make everyone aware of what happened. Find out what you can."
"I will. I'll talk to you later, mom," JJ answered and the two disconnected.
JJ left Hailey's house and went to the doctor's office in town to advise what happened. The arrangements were made and Leah was taken from the house despite Hailey arguing intensely against it. JJ was eventually able to get Hailey to calm down to a degree, but the man would not speak with anyone except JJ. News of Leah's death spread in no time and people swarmed the house with good intent and wanting to check on Hailey and ensure he was alright, but he wasn't having any of it. JJ acted as a buffer and let people that came know that Hailey was extremely upset and didn't want visitors but that he'd keep everyone updated. Seth and Charlene were at the house an hour after JJ had called Natalie. Seth was extremely upset as well and Charlene was consoling him but he wanted to be there and know the instant they had more information.
The doctor was able to determine Leah's cause of death was a simple matter of old age. She'd not suffered. She'd simply fallen asleep and didn't wake up. That offered some amount of comfort, but it wasn't much. Due to Kevin being in New York when Leah died, he wasn't able to be there right away, but he made arrangements with the courts citing family emergency and was back in Washington within 48 hours to be with his family but also review Leah's will. It was a rather basic will that only dictated that, indeed, she wanted to be buried in Forks under a headstone that would hold Hailey's name as well when he passed away. The arrangements were made with the cemetery, a nice casket was obtained, a gravestone was made and a plot was picked. By that Saturday after Leah died, the wake was held during the day and it was extremely crowded. Everyone in town was there but Hailey wasn't speaking with any of them. He would only sit near Leah's casket and if he wasn't crying, he was dead silent. JJ stayed by Hailey's side most of the time not saying anything but just being there for him. He asked Eun Mi to make sure Jae Sun didn't try to come near Hailey during the wake not wanting the man to snap at Jae Sun unintentionally, so Eun Mi was focused on the boys.
The next day was the funeral. As JJ had done for the wake, he sat beside Hailey the whole time. Before they closed the casket, Hailey put a baseball in her casket with 'ich liebe dich' written on the ball. When they got to the grave plot, the priest said a few parting words and after the funeral they all went back to the church for lunch. Hailey still wasn't very social and insisted he wanted to be brought back home, so JJ said goodbye to everyone on Hailey's behalf and brought him home.
"Do you want any coffee, Uncle Hailey?" JJ asked once they were at Hailey's house.
"No, thank you," Hailey said.
"How about a game of poker?"
"No," Hailey shook his head and went to his desk where all his clocks were. He stared at a picture of Leah that was taken years and years ago when they'd first gotten married. Since Leah had passed away, he'd put all the pictures he had of her on his desk. JJ went to Hailey so he was standing close but he didn't touch Hailey. He had a feeling if he did, Hailey would not take it well, but he wanted to offer something.
"We're here for you, Uncle Hailey," JJ finally said.
"I know," Hailey said. "I just need to be alone."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure," Hailey nodded. Reluctantly, JJ finally left Hailey alone and went back to the church to be with the family. However, he frequently walked back to the house to look through the window and check on Hailey. He'd never moved from his seat at his little desk.
Hailey didn't return to the shop for a few days. JJ would walk over to check on him and if he could see Hailey through the window, he wouldn't bother him. If he couldn't see Hailey through the window, he'd wait until he could. There were a number of people wanting to bring Hailey food and visit him, but JJ always warned to let him be. Both days JJ checked on Hailey seeing mountains of casserole dishes in his kitchen from well-wishers that had visited despite JJ's request, but he was relieved Hailey was at least picking at all the food he was brought. Hailey didn't return to the General Store until Wednesday after Leah's funeral and it was midway through the day. Jae Sun was with JJ that day and when Hailey walked in, Jae Sun went right to him.
"Uncle Hailey," Jae Sun said and wandered over to him to give him a hug. Hailey patted the boy's back and head.
"How are you feeling?" JJ asked.
"As good as I can be I suppose," Hailey answered honestly and went to the spot where he'd usually sit near the register. He surprised JJ when he took Jae Sun into his arms and let the boy sit on his lap. "I've lived by myself before," Hailey said seemingly out of nowhere, "but that was so long ago. I don't think I've lived by myself since I was thirty whether it was my Uncle Mitch when I came here or Leah when we got married. It didn't used to be this lonely." JJ didn't say anything right away. He knew what he wanted to ask but he also knew what the answer would be.
"Why don't Eun Mi and I come stay with you for a while?" JJ asked. "Or you can come stay with us. That way you won't be alone." The look Hailey gave JJ was all the answer he needed. He looked extremely annoyed with the suggestion and even slightly offended, but eventually his expression softened but not by much.
"I appreciate what you're trying to do, JJ, but I don't need you to take care of me."
"I didn't mean it like that, Uncle Hailey," JJ said.
"I know you didn't," Hailey said with a heavy sigh.
"You can sleep in my room Uncle Hailey," Jae Sun offered innocently and Hailey offered the barest ghost of a smile.
"You don't want to share a room with me, boy," Hailey said. "But thank you for offering."
JJ was quiet a moment and finally said, "Well, if you ever change your mind: we have plenty of room for you."
"JJ, the day I agree to move in with you is the day I'm at death's door," Hailey said.
"Please don't say things like that, Uncle Hailey," JJ pleaded calmly. When JJ finally returned home with Jae Sun, Eun Mi already had dinner on the table. Were it not that Eun Mi insisted Jae Sun needed to clean up before dinner, the boy would have rushed to the table to start enjoying his food. When Jae Sun and JJ had gotten cleaned up and returned downstairs, Eun Mi noticed JJ's poor mood immediately.
"How was work today?" Eun Mi finally asked.
"Work was fine," JJ said. "It's Hailey I'm worried about. He finally came back to the shop today. He was talking about how lonely the house is without Leah there."
"Did you offer to let him stay with us?" Eun Mi asked without hesitation.
"I offered the suggestion, but he shot it down," JJ said.
"I offered to let him stay in my room, but he said no," Jae Sun said and Eun Mi rubbed his cheek affectionately.
"That is very kind of you, Jae Sun," Eun Mi said. "If he doesn't start to feel better, do you think we should have him stay with us anyway? Kicking and screaming?"
JJ finally chuckled a little under his breath. "I assure you there would be copious kicking and screaming. I'm contemplating the four of us moving into the General Store for a while. There's two bedrooms that we can use and a small kitchen. It would be one hell of a downsize, but it's no worse than the house in Korea, so it wouldn't be so bad."
"Just tell me when," Eun Mi said. JJ smiled appreciatively at her and took her hand.
"Thanks," JJ said and kissed her hand.
JJ made everyone aware of his plans and another two weeks later, they got everything they needed together and moved it into the housing unit of the General Store. JJ and Eun Mi took the master bedroom and had Mae Sun's crib in there with them while Jae Sun took the little room down the hall from them. They were finished moving in by Monday and Hailey came into the General Store to the smell of Eun Mi making breakfast.
"Are you being serious?" Hailey said when he saw Eun Mi and both of the children in the kitchen and JJ up front at the register.
"It's just for now," JJ said. "Will you please humor me and let me be nearby? It'll make me feel better."
"Honestly, JJ, I'm widowed, not ill," Hailey started firm but he trailed off a little. He glanced down at his hand unintentionally, looking at his wedding ring before taking a deep breath to stay calm and finally going to his chair. "Did I ever tell you how Leah and I met?"
"If I remember correctly, you said the two of you threw baseballs at each other until you were in love," JJ answered and Hailey smiled.
"That's the long and short of it I guess," Hailey said. "Looking back on it, I think I liked her from the start. She had so much spirit. She was loud and foul-mouthed, she didn't take shit from anyone and she never let you have the last word without a fight. When we began seeing one another romantically, she stood by my decision to not have children and was by my side no matter what. She was my other half. It's hard to be without your other half."
"She's dearly missed, Uncle Hailey," JJ reassured.
"More than you know," Hailey muttered and rubbed his nose before sniffling away the tears. "I'm sorry I've been so crabby and mean lately."
"Lately?" JJ teased and Hailey finally chuckled.
"Watch it, boy. I'm trying to be nice," Hailey said.
"Let's be honest, Uncle Hailey: being nice isn't your strong suit," JJ said.
"Fine. I was about to thank you for being so supportive since the funeral, but fuck you then."
JJ chuckled with him, "You don't need to thank me, Uncle Hailey. You did the same for me and then some."
"Hailey," Eun Mi said and walked out with some cornbread muffins. "I made cornbread for breakfast."
"Oh, thank God," Hailey said and accepted the plate of muffins. "I was scared you and your husband would force me to eat that rice and kimchi shit from now on."
"Eomma makes the best kimchi!" Jae Sun said.
"She makes good cornbread muffins at the very least," Hailey said after finishing his first bite of cornbread.
Following the funeral, Kevin had to return to New York right away and return to the Fraud case he'd been working on. On the final day in court, Kevin made his final statements to the jury and rested his case. The prosecution did the same thing and the Jury went to deliberate. Court was released until the jury returned with a verdict. After leaving the courthouse, Kevin went home but instead of going to his apartment, he went up to the penthouse and knocked on the door to Alphonse's unit and Alphonse answered the door.
"Congratulations on your win, Kevin," Alphonse said and stepped aside so JJ could come in.
"The jury isn't back yet."
"You won," Alphonse said. "I've seen enough of the case and your argument compared to the prosecution and you won. Hands down. I'd bet this penthouse on it."
"Am I allowed to say I hope I lose this case? He's a slimy little bastard. Might do him good to pay his dues."
"They always are," Alphonse said. "How about we have some Brandy and coffee?"
"With cream," Kevin requested.
"Coming right up, madam," Alphonse teased and the two of them went to his kitchen so he could prepare the coffee for their drinks. "How have you been feeling since returning? Leah was your….cousin right?"
"Yeah, she was my cousin," Kevin answered. "I'm alright. She died peacefully. Cousin Hailey and Seth are doing better from what I've heard since last I spoke with Amber but Hailey's still mourning. Apparently JJ moved the family into the General Store so they could be close to Hailey just in case."
"That's good of them to do," Alphonse said. "I'm sorry for your loss."
"Thank you," Kevin said. Once the coffee was done brewing, Alphonse added the cream and Brandy to both glasses. "Good of you to join me for a drink, milady."
"Nothing makes me feel better than a drink between us girls," Alphonse played along and the two toasted before sipping their drinks. "Try to think of it this way: you get a handsome payout if he wins. Hell, he still owes us a considerable sum even if he loses."
"I'm more concerned with him saying he wants to put me on retainer if we win," Kevin said. "I think I'd rather walk on hot coals."
"It's a pretty penny to do that," Alphonse said.
"I should charge him more than the normal rate," Kevin muttered. "Convince him I might not be worth it."
"A guilty man isn't about to relinquish his get out of jail card."
"Please don't call me that," Kevin said. Just then, the phone rang and Alphonse answered it. He spoke to whomever called briefly before ending the call.
"The jury's back," Alphonse said.
"Fuck, that didn't take long," Kevin said and gulped down his drink. "Maybe I'm lucky and he's been found guilty."
"I'll come with you," Alphonse said and got back into a fresh suit before going with Kevin to the courthouse. Another two hours later, the verdict was read: not guilty. Kevin released a breath, but not from relief.
"Mr. Black," his client, Jean Donovan, said and extended his hand, "You've saved my life. I owe you my gratitude."
"Just doing my job, Mr. Donovan," Kevin said with a forced charming smile.
"Allow me to show my appreciation by treating you to drinks and dinner tomorrow. The finest restaurant in New York."
"That's alright, Mr. Donovan," Kevin said. "I appreciate the invitation, though."
"At least let me invite you to a party I'll be attending in Albany next weekend," Mr. Donovan offered.
"Already had plans for a party when on trial. Truly you are ballsy, Mr. Donovan."
"Just confident in my choice of lawyer," he smiled. "Anyway, it's a book party / campaign party. Have you read Profiles in Courage?"
"Can't say as I have, but I hear the author's already gunning for president," Kevin said.
"Oh, you bet he is," Mr. Donovan smiled. "John might be the only man I've met that's more charming than you. Poor guy's been going to talk after talk for his campaign so I don't know how long he'll be at his own party before he has to fly out. He's been going all over the place since January."
"Campaigning is time consuming," Kevin said.
"I take it you're not a Democrat," Mr. Donovan teased.
"I'll vote for a Democrat if he's worth voting for, but I'd be lying if I said they're my first choice," Kevin said. "When you see your wife sent away because the president can't be bothered to accept desperate refugees, it tends to leave a bad taste in one's mouth."
"So it would seem," Mr. Donovan said. "Well, think of it as an excuse to take the wife out to a party."
"My wife's back home in Washington, Mr. Donovan," Kevin said.
"A mistress then? You certainly wouldn't be the only one," Mr. Donovan chuckled.
"I don't have a mistress Mr. Donovan," Kevin said and an admitted hint of irritation.
"Forgive me; I meant no offense," Mr. Donovan said. "How about she comes here? I'm sure she'd love a trip to New York. Get out from under all that rain. There'll be great food, great company, celebrities will be there: Frank Sinatra's singing." That caught Kevin's attention. Whenever their radio was on while Amber was cleaning or making dinner, whenever Frank Sinatra came on, her hips would sway and she'd start humming. He knew Amber would enjoy hearing him sing in person.
Kevin sighed, "I'll call Amber and ask if she'd like to come to New York for the party. We'll have to bring our children."
"Just make sure they're dressed up nice," Mr. Donovan said and then shook Kevin's hand again. "Saturday 21st and the party starts at 12:00. I'll send the invitation to your office for you so you have it. That's your access card as it were. We might be able to catch John before he's off to Chicago. Wait…I think he's going to New Brunswick now that I think of it. Then it's off to Chicago. Anyway, you're welcome to come with your wife and your boys."
"A daughter and a son, Mr. Donovan," Kevin said.
"Even better. How old is your daughter?"
"She's six, sir," Kevin said.
"That's a shame," Mr. Donovan said. "She's still got time before you need to find her a rich husband. Well, Mr. Black, it was a pleasure. I look forward to having you on retainer."
"It's been a pleasure, Mr. Donovan," Kevin said with a fake smile and firm handshake.
"Please Kevin," he said, suddenly very informal, "just call me Jean."
"If you wish, Jean," Kevin said. Having been relieved of his client's presence, Kevin went to Alphonse and the two left the courthouse and hailed a Taxi.
"I assume Mr. Jean Donovan will be keeping you on retainer from now on?" Alphonse asked as they were trying to get a cab.
"Unfortunately," Kevin said. They got their cab and got in before Kevin continued. "Son of a bitch already had plans to go to a party next Saturday despite a potential prison sentence over his head. Can you believe that?"
"Of course he did," Alphonse said.
"He invited me to go to the party. It's apparently a semi-book party semi-campaign party for Senator Kennedy."
"Clearly he doesn't know you very well," Alphonse said. "Are you planning to go?"
"I'll ask Amber about it," Kevin said. "I'd been about to refuse especially when he implied I could 'simply bring my mistress'. I fucking hate it when they assume I have a mistress. But apparently Frank Sinatra is singing at this little party and if that's the case, Amber might want to go."
"I didn't realize Amber was a fan of Frank Sinatra."
"Oh yeah," Kevin said with a sigh. "You should see her when his music comes on the radio. One day I walked out of my office and 'I've Got You Under My Skin' came on and I caught her dancing with Levi." Kevin chuckled at the fond memory. "Did I ever tell you: one day when my Aunt Rosalie was looking after the kids, the TV was on playing Cinderella and Heather was in one of Amber's dresses covered in make-up dancing on the coffee table. Levi was just in a diaper banging on a pit with a wooden spoon." Kevin laughed a little more.
"Sounds like utter chaos," Alphonse said.
"I wish we had a picture," Kevin smiled. "Mr. Donovan said he'd send me the invitation to our office tomorrow. Did you want to join us if Amber decides she wants to go?"
"I don't see why not," Alphonse said. "I'll check with Harold and find out if he and Anastasia can join us. They can bring Hal and Heather can have a date."
"Don't even joke," Kevin groaned. "That weasel asked how old Heather is and was so disappointed that she's only six. Said there's plenty of time to find her a 'rich husband'. Fucking ingrate."
"You are allowed to refuse to be on retainer you know," Alphonse chuckled.
"I can stomach the guy," Kevin said reluctantly. "Heather's already decided she wants to go to Paris for her Bot Mitzvah party. She could easily change her mind I guess, but better to have the money put aside for that now."
"That's to say nothing of her wedding when the time comes," Alphonse said.
"Don't forget college," the driver added, having been eavesdropping.
"For what? To find a suitable husband?" Alphonse said.
"I'll forgive that comment, but if Heather's anything like her mother, she will want to be completely independent. So I wouldn't doubt college is on the horizon too," Kevin said.
"If nothing else, your son will absolutely go to college. Though I hear if he can be accepted to Yale, he'll get a nice discount since you're an alumni."
"Let my son learn to walk before we throw him to the wolves," Kevin groaned. A few minutes later, they arrived back to the complex and went up to their respective apartments. Alphonse offered to let Kevin come to the penthouse for another coffee and Brandy, but Kevin declined and promised to see him tomorrow. When he made it back to his apartment, he grabbed the phone in the master bedroom so he could look out on the city while he called Amber. After a few rings, the phone answered.
"Black residence," Amber's voice came from the receiver like sunshine after a rainy day.
"God I miss you," Kevin said and Amber giggled.
"I miss you too," Amber said. "How is the case going?"
"We won," Kevin said. "Mr. Donovan was found not guilty."
"You don't sound thrilled," Amber said sympathetically.
"Not really, but it's a paycheck," Kevin said. "How was your day? How are the kids?"
"We're just filling orders," Amber said. "We've got three weddings we're making the Unity candles for and the weddings are in November and December. Heather's the life of the party in school according to the teachers. I can't tell you how many times I've come home to the whole class being at our house playing in our backyard with their moms enjoying tea with Rosalie."
"Sounds like Rosalie's dream come true," Kevin chuckled. "How's Levi doing? Speaking of, how are your parents?"
"Levi's been great," Amber said. "He's a very well behaved little boy and customers love to see him. Mom and dad are alright. We've been having dinner at their house every night since you've been in New York."
"I'll bet they love the company," Kevin said. "So guess what."
"What?"
"After Mr. Donovan was found not-guilty, he invited me to a party he's attending next Saturday."
"Cocky, ain't he?" Amber said sarcastically.
"That's what I said. He said he was just confident he had a good lawyer."
"Well that was flattering of him," Amber said.
"As flattering as he can be I guess," Kevin said. "Anyway, I was planning to just tell him no, but apparently Frank Sinatra's signing at this event."
"Really?" Kevin heard the lift of excitement in her voice. "That's exciting."
"Only if you would do me the honor of letting me fly you and the kids here to join me," Kevin smiled. "Otherwise I'm telling him no. Son of a bitch had the nerve to suggest I could bring my mistress."
"What mistress?' Amber asked with humor in her voice. "Who is this harlot? She can deal with me."
"No such woman exists I promise," Kevin chuckled. "I don't need a whore when I have a lady at home."
"That's so sweet of you to say," Amber giggled. Then her giggle died down as she contemplated. "It's a tempting offer. Let me speak with mom and see if she can spare me for a weekend."
"Just tell me when and I'll put you on the next flight to New York," Kevin smiled.
"It wouldn't be until Thursday I think," Amber said. "We can use Friday to have a little family time together. Go to central park or something."
"That sounds great actually," Kevin said. "Hell, we can just have the weekend just the four of us and say to hell with the party."
"No, we can go. I'd love to hear Frankie live."
"Anything for you," Kevin said.
"What's the dress code for this party? Black tie or business formal?"
"I'd guess business formal since it's at noon, but I'll tell you once I see the invitation. Alphonse will come with and he's going to see if Harold and Anastasia want to join us."
"That'll be nice," Amber said. "So who's the party for?"
"Senator Kennedy," Kevin said.
"The Democratic nominee?"
"He's not the nominee yet, but he's sure as shit chomping for it. He served in the U.S. Navy, so he gets points in my book for serving his country, but that's all the points he's earned from me so far."
"They can't all be General Eisenhower dear," Amber teased. "I'll talk to mom and find out if she can spare me for a few days. I'll call you tomorrow and let you know."
"That works for me. I'll be at my office all day for a change. So are the kids already asleep or can I tell them goodnight?"
"They're in bed," Amber said. "It's 10 here."
"Shit, that's right," Kevin said. "I'll talk to you tomorrow then. I love you Amber."
"I love you too, Kevin," Amber answered and they disconnected. The following day when Kevin arrived into the office he was welcomed into work by the receptionist with a kind smile and a message.
"This came in for you, Mr. Black. It's from Mr. Donovan."
"Yeah, I think I know what it is," Kevin said, accepting the envelope and opening it to reveal it was indeed the invitation.
"Is it a thank you card for winning his case?" the receptionist asked.
"The only 'thank you' a man like that can be bothered to give," Kevin said. "It's an invitation to a party next weekend. I'm only considering it since Frank Sinatra's singing."
"Really?!" the receptionist smiled and swooned. "Oh, I love Frank Sinatra. I don't suppose you're hurting for a date are you?"
"Sorry, Caroline, but if I go with anyone, it'll be with Amber," Kevin said. "If she can come to New York, I'll be out next Friday."
"How are Amber and the children doing, sir?" Caroline asked.
"They're well," Kevin smiled. "We're planning to get a new family picture done soon now that Levi's a year."
"Do you have a new picture of them?" Caroline asked and Kevin pulled out his wallet to retrieve the latest pictures of the kids from Levi's first birthday at the tribe. It was a picture of Amber it the kitchen with Renesmee making a giant birthday cake for everyone to share with Levi in her arm and Heather at her feet facing the camera. Caroline sighed. "They're precious, Mr. Black. If they come to New York, will you bring them into the office for a visit?"
"Maybe," Kevin said. "We'd be going to Central Park, so maybe."
"I think that sounds lovely," Caroline smiled. The phone rang so she had to answer it and Kevin was getting ready to go to his office when Caroline stopped him. "Speak of the Devil, Mr. Black. Mrs. Black's on the phone. Did you want me to send her to your office phone?"
"Yeah, put her through and I'll be in the office in a second," Kevin said and went straight to his office. His phone was ringing as he stepped in and he answered the phone to Amber. "Morning, Amber."
"Morning, Kevin," Amber said. "I spoke with mom about us coming to New York. I was only going to ask for Thursday and Friday, but after sleeping on it, I'd like to spend the week with you if you can spare the days for me."
"I can't be away from the office all day, but I can always leave early and come home for lunch," Kevin smiled. "Should I get plan tickets for the three of you for tomorrow?"
"Make it Saturday," Amber said. "It'll give me a chance to notify the school Heather won't be there for the week."
"I'll make the arrangements and have them mailed to you," Kevin said. "Also, I got the invitation and it's a little higher than business casual I'm afraid. You won't have to wear a ball gown or anything, but wearing those pearls I got you won't hurt."
"Dually noted," Amber said with a smile.
"Do you want to bring anyone to help with Heather and Levi?" Kevin asked.
"I'll ask Embry if he can fly in to join us for the party," Amber said. "If Frank Sinatra sings 'Fly Me to the Moon', I'll want a dance with you."
"You'll get all the dances you want," Kevin smiled.
"I'll hold you to it," Amber said. "I'll make sure the children have appropriate formal wear for the party."
"Sounds good. I'll pick you up from the airport once you land in New York."
"I'll see you then. I'll talk to you later tonight?"
"I can't wait. On both counts," Kevin said and the two said goodbye to each other. After Kevin hung up the phone, there was a knock on the door as Alphonse walked in.
"So I take it Amber will be here for the party?"
"She'll be flying in on Saturday," Kevin said. "I'll need to buy the tickets and have them sent to her. Will Harold and Anastasia join us?"
"Just them," Alphonse said. "Apparently Hal is to remain in Washington for school. The nanny will be looking after him."
"For how expensive that private school is I can't say I blame them," Kevin smiled. "Us plebeians must settle for sending our children to public school I'm afraid."
"You have the means to live like an aristocrat. You need only take advantage of the privilege," Alphonse said. "Might I see the invitation?" Kevin handed over the envelope for Alphonse to review and he chuckled. "Perhaps I should wear my father's metals and his uniform. It still fits me I'm quite sure."
"Wear a uniform your father wore purely for decoration you mean? Did you father ever actually serve in the military?"
"Well, yes, of course. He was an aristocrat. He was just put in a position of command."
"Funny how a title will do that," Kevin poked fun.
"When we aren't brave enough to run into no-man's land to save a comrade, we must climb the latter how we can," Alphonse said. "Blue blood doesn't typically come with courage I'm afraid. Anyway, do you plan to be in and out of the office next week?"
"I won't be in on Friday so we can spend the day together, but I'll be in the office the rest of the week. I'll just be going home for lunch and going home early. Caroline has my number so she can forward clients to me if it's an emergency."
"Works for me," Alphonse said. "You need to come to New York more often. I miss you."
"Aw, I miss you too, Alphonse," Kevin chuckled. "I imagine with Mr. Donovan putting me on retainer, I may be here more often anyway. I don't have confidence he'll keep himself out of trouble."
"If they did, we wouldn't be in business," Alphonse chuckled. "So do you know why the Senator is getting such an obscene head start in campaigning?"
"Probably trying to charm all the right people early in the game. Mr. Donovan claims I'm the only other man he's known that's charming as Senator John Kennedy."
"He thinks the Senator's as charming as you? Adorable," Alphonse said condescendingly.
"You're biased," Kevin said. "I'm more interested in making sure Amber has a good time."
"Might be good for business too if we can garner up some new clients," Alphonse said. "Hint, hint."
"Yes, milord, I will obtain more clients," Kevin said. "You need to improve with winning new clients."
"Why bother when I have the Pied Piper?" Alphonse joked and Kevin laughed.
"Why indeed," Kevin said.
Later that afternoon, Kevin made the arrangements for Amber's and the children's plane tickets and by the following day, Amber confirmed she'd received them and would see him that Saturday. Friday dragged from Kevin being eager to welcome Amber to New York and the next day he arrived at the Airport much earlier than he needed to be, gladly waiting for them. Once he knew their plane had landed, Kevin waited at baggage claims until he saw Amber, Heather and Levi. He started to approach and Heather ran right to him with her arms out excited to see him and he picked her up in a hug.
"There's my little girl," Kevin said and kissed her cheek.
"I missed you daddy," she said.
"I missed you too, honey," Kevin said and made it the rest of the way and hugged Amber and Levi. "I missed all of you."
"We missed you too," Amber said and kissed him. Levi turned and said 'daddy' before reaching out to him for Kevin to take the boy in his arms.
"How was your flight?" Kevin asked once he was holding the children and Amber was searching for their luggage.
"Surprisingly pleasant," Amber said. "Levi didn't like when his ears popped but he calmed down pretty quick. They're starving, though. Can we stop somewhere to get them some food?"
"I was about to ask," Kevin said and looked at the kids. "You two hungry? I know I am."
"Yes!" Heather said and Levi nodded.
"Good. Then once we have all the suitcases, we'll get something to eat."
Kevin put Heather down so he could help carry the luggage and Heather insisted on helping carry her suitcase. Thankfully it wasn't very big so she was able to roll it behind her with ease. Once outside, Kevin hailed them a cab and they made the trip into the city and went to a Deli near their apartment. They got their food but Heather was able to bat her eyelashes and get the owner to give her a free cookie with a big smile on his face. Kevin offered to pay for it, but the owner assured it was fine and Heather had a little skip in her step.
"She's inherited your charm to be sure," Amber teased when they left the Deli and were walking back to their apartment.
"She's cute as a button like you, so that helps," Kevin said. Heather's hair was just as brown as Kevin's hair but she had softer features than Kevin. If one looked at her and at Kevin, they'd know instantly he was the little girl's father, but she had enough of Amber that she sometimes reminded Kevin of Amber. "Sometimes when she's playing, she reminds me of you when you'd been that small."
"I don't know," Amber said. "I've always been a little cotton top."
"That's true," Kevin smiled. "That was back when you were growing like a weed and could only speak French."
"Looking back on it, I can't believe you were only fifteen. You looked as though you could pass for older," Amber said.
"That's what I'd thought when Embry and I first enlisted, but good old Sergeant Stanley saw right through it. I just started looking older when I shifted to a wolf for the first time. I remember when you all first moved to Berlin and I went to Germany to see you. You'd grown up on me. I think I literally stopped in my tracks when I saw you for how beautiful you were."
"Do you still think that way about me?"
"Of course I do," Kevin said and leaned over to kiss her before whispering in her ear, "Hair like the sun, eyes blue as the sea, skin soft like silk and flawless; your faithful servant is ever eager to say his prayers at the temple if his goddess will permit." Amber blushed and he even noticed Amber tremble a little.
"Perhaps under the moonlight," Amber said trying not to moan since Levi was still in her arms.
"I shall wait patiently then," Kevin said and kissed her cheek again and he definitely felt her tremble that time.
They finally got up to the apartment and enjoyed their lunch together while Amber inspected what was currently in the fridge before determining she needed to get groceries later. They got to that after finishing their lunch and by that evening, the fridge was stocked and they invited Alphonse to their apartment for dinner after which, Kevin and Alphonse had brandy by the fire while Heather and Levi played on the floor and Amber was reading.
"You're reading Anna Karenina?" Alphonse asked when he noticed the title.
"I've been reading it," Amber said with a sigh. "Evalina suggested I read it two years ago and I've been reading it ever since. It's a pretty dense read."
"That it is," Alphonse said.
"She let me have her French copy. She tends to keep the original translation to herself. She said she likes to read that to Evalynn and Caleb when she puts them to bed to keep their Russian skills sharp."
"I didn't realize your sister-in-law spoke Russian," Alphonse said. "I thought she was Italian."
"She lived in Italy but her grandfather is Russian on her father's side. On her mother's side, her grandfather is Scottish. I think both grandmothers were Italian but I never hear much about them," Kevin partially lied.
"Does she speak Gaelic too?" Alphonse said, half asking half joking.
"I don't think she does," Kevin smiled. "I don't think her grandfather was that far north in Scotland. I think he lived near where my great grandparents hailed. They were from Glasgow."
"I see," Alphonse said.
"You speak Russian don't you?" Kevin asked.
"Yes, but not fluently. Ana and I typically spoke either German or English to each other, but she wasn't above having her two cents in Russian at my expense."
"Yes, I know. I've overheard her a few times. Didn't understand her, but I heard it. Anastasia speaks Russian doesn't she?"
"She does," Alphonse said. "Ana made sure of it. My mother made sure she spoke German too. For a time, Ana would insist that when the two would talk that it be in Russian thinking she could get things over my head. Little did she know Anastasia was a good daughter that warned her father when her mother was plotting her evil web."
"How has she been by the way? I haven't heard from her."
"That's because she moved to Paris," Alphonse said with the biggest smile. "She received her inheritance from her father's passing all those years ago and she moved to Paris this past summer."
"Glad to see you so happy," Kevin chuckled.
"She still expects her alimony payments, harpy that she is, but I'm happy to wire them to Paris for them."
"Does she have a point of contact that can notify Anastasia if something happens?"
"The servants know who to call once a house finally lands on the wicked witch," Alphonse said and sipped his brandy.
"You'll be more sympathetic than you're being now for Anastasia's sake I hope," Kevin said.
"Of course," Alphonse said. "I may even go to the funeral when the time comes but you won't see me shed a tear unless on my daughter's behalf. If I can find anything positive to say about the princess, it's to say that she loves our daughter."
"That she does," Kevin said.
"Daddy, can we go to Paris for my Bot Mitzvah?" Heather asked with her puppy dog eyes.
"I don't know, Heather," Kevin said, continuing the ploy that he'd not already started saving up for it. "You'll just have to keep being a good girl until your Bot Mitzvah." Amber said nothing, but she looked at Kevin knowingly a moment with a smile and rolled her eyes.
"Please, daddy," Heather pleaded and went to Kevin's side and the couch and started hugging him, all the while looking at him with this puppy eyes.
"You drive a hard bargain, little miss," Kevin chuckled. "You have my word: if you're good, we'll take you to Paris."
"Thank you, daddy!" Heather cheered and hugged him tighter.
"Spineless," Amber said under her breath with a giggle while she was reading.
"Daddy, what's Paris like?" Heather asked after she started sitting on Kevin's lap.
"Pre or post being blown up?" Kevin joked.
"I'm certain she means what it is like now," Amber teased.
"Can't say I know what it's like now," Kevin said. "If Gentleman Prefer Blondes is to be believed, it's cleaned up nicely since last I was there."
"Keep in mind, dear, last your father was in Paris, it was a war zone," Alphonse said.
"What does that mean?" Heather asked.
"It means it was filled with Nazis," Kevin muttered bitterly and then cleared his throat. "Don't worry, Heather. You won't have to worry about any of that."
Around that time, Amber determined it was Heather's and Levi's bedtime and she took them away to get washed up and ready for bed while Kevin and Alphonse stayed in the living room talking. Once Amber had gotten Heather and Levi tucked it, she walked over to offer to make coffee but that she'd be turning in as well. Kevin and Alphonse accepted the coffee and stayed up another two hours together talking before Alphonse finally left to return to the penthouse. Their bedroom door was slightly ajar when Kevin approached. He opened the door slowly and saw Amber wrapped in a towel with another in her hair.
"Did Alphonse leave?" Amber asked.
"Yeah, I just said goodnight to him. Sorry we were up so long."
"It's alright. I just took a shower and decided to relax in the tub after that."
"I'll get in the shower then and I'll join you for bed."
"Alright," Amber said and then continued seductively, "Just remember to say your prayers tonight." Kevin stopped taking off his tie when she'd said that and stared at her a moment before finally smiling.
"Might I make my first offering?" Kevin offered but was approaching before she even had a chance to answer. Kevin took a hold of her and placed her on the edge of the bed before undoing the towel so it would fall away leaving her naked to his view.
He pressed a hand against her chest gently instructing her to go on her back and Amber complied readily. Once she was on her back, Kevin kneeled before her and started with placing tender kisses on her breasts down her stomach to her hips along the inside of her thighs before finally going to her core making Amber release an high pitched but forcefully subdued moan. She brought both hands into his short hair rubbing her nails against his skin and tugging at the strands when she felt a particularly sharp pleasure. Kevin didn't go slow or try to prolong what he was doing. Rather, he brought her to orgasm rather quickly and once he had, he kissed her inner thighs a few times before he stood.
"I'll be right back," Kevin promised and went to take his shower while Amber stayed in bed and just basked in the aftermath. She'd lost all track of time and was even about to fall asleep when she was being picked up and brought under the covers with Kevin holding her close.
She woke up again when Kevin started touching her intimately and since she was still wet, he just slipped in and held her close while he made love to her. Amber was content to enjoy the build until they both reached their climax, falling asleep in bed together immediately after. In the morning, they were woken up by Heather and Levi coming into their bedroom and going onto their bed to wake them. Thankfully, they were under the covers and they didn't see anything, but they made sure to get the two of them out of their bedroom so they could get dressed and meet them in the kitchen.
For the remainder of the week, Kevin would go into work but was always home for lunch and would later return home early from work. Thankfully, only once did Caroline have to call him at home and he was able to get on the phone with his client and then get the man off the phone in about thirty minutes. As he'd promised, Kevin took that Friday off and he spent the four of them spent the whole day together. Heather and Levi tried to wake them early, but when Heather got into their bed and started jumping eager to go to the park, Kevin grabbed her and brought her down telling her it was still nap time. Not wanting to be left out, Levi plopped down so he was between Kevin and Amber in their bed. When they finally got out of bed, Amber made them all pancakes before they got dressed and finally left for Central Park. With Levi's new found power of started to get better and better at walking, he was determined to follow his big sister rather than have Amber carry him. Amber made a point to keep the two of them close so Levi wouldn't fall.
"You said Embry's flying in tonight right?"
"Yeah, he said he'd be here by dinner," Kevin said. "I let him know he can wear one of my suits for the party."
"Where is the party?" Amber asked.
"It's in Albany," Kevin said. "It's being held at a donor's house the way I hear it. A Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Kent I think was the name. I think Alphonse and I will see if we can win a few clients while we're there but above all else, I just want you to enjoy yourself."
"Levi!" Amber yelled when Levi was about to pick something up and the boy stood up straight in an instant when her heard his name in that tone. "Don't touch that! It's been on the ground!" Amber scolded. Levi nodded and then Heather came up behind her little brother and picked him up suddenly and started walking while Levi was squirming trying to get out of her arms. "Sorry," Amber said.
"It's alright," Kevin smiled and leaned over to kiss her. "Alphonse has insisted we need to go in a limo so he's already made those arrangements. The bad news is it's a three hour drive, so we need to leave early."
"Oh God," Amber said and looked right at the kids. "I'm beginning to think maybe we shouldn't bring the children with us."
"I thought about it, but I already promised Heather she was allowed to come," Kevin said. "She's actually looking forward to it."
"She just doesn't know better," Amber joked.
"There will be plenty of space in the limo so we'll make sure she has something to keep herself entertained for the trip."
"I just hope they have accommodations for children," Amber said.
They spent the entire day in Central Park with there being copious space to walk around in and to see. By the time they finally returned home, Levi was asleep and Heather was about to fall asleep. Embry arrived shortly thereafter but was also extremely tired and just went straight to bed. Seeing as they needed to wake up early anyway, Kevin and Amber got the children straight to bed and got to bed early themselves. The next morning, Amber was awake before everyone and got a pot of coffee going first thing before hoping in the shower to get herself ready. Once she'd finished her shower, she gently woke Kevin so he could take his shower while Amber turned her attention to the children getting them washed up and dressed for the party. She put Levi in a little pair of suit pants, a tiny dress shirt and a little vest and even a tiny tie. She ended up gushing over how cute he looked for several minutes before she started getting Heather in her dress and her hair curled. Heather wore a dress that was the same cut as her mother's but wasn't as full. She was in a little pink dress and a white cardigan and white shoes with bouncy curls looking just as precious as her little brother. By then, Embry and Kevin were showed and dressed so they could take the kids while Amber got her hair dolled up, her make-up on and in her lavender A-line dress. For a moment, she feared the color might be a little too pale, so she switched gears and wore her darker hued purple dress of the same cut but her pearl necklace and earrings still looked nice and stayed on. When Amber left their bedroom, Alphonse, Harold and Anastasia had come down and they were ready to go downstairs to the limo that would be there in another five minutes. Embry held Heather's little hand as they left and Amber held Levi and as they were leaving, Kevin leaned down to whisper in Amber's ear, "You look beautiful."
"Thank you," Amber answered and they got downstairs to the limo for the three hour drive to Albany.
"So Anastasia, Alphonse tells me your mother moved to Paris?" Kevin asked.
"Yes, she did," Anastasia said. "I think she's wanted to return to Paris since she came to America. She has this cute house near the river and we're visiting her for Christmas this year."
"That sounds like a good time," Kevin said.
"Daddy said we're going to Paris for my Bot Mitzvah!" Heather declared with excitement.
"Anna Heather Renesmee, I distinctly remember telling you that if you were good up to your Bot Mitzvah then we might go to Paris," Kevin smiled. "According to my calculations, you've got to be on your best behavior for the next seven years and that's an awfully tall order young lady."
"I'll be good; I promise," Heather said with a big smile.
"Do you?" Kevin asked and Heather went right to Kevin so she could sit next to him and snuggle up to him.
"I promise," she said and gave Kevin a big hug.
"Remember to bat your eyelashes and say 'daddy', dear," Anastasia smiled. "It works every time."
"Anastasia, do not relay your methods of manipulation," Alphonse teased. "Kevin's hopeless against her as it is." It was too late, though, as by then Heather was looking up at Kevin with her sweetest smile.
"I promise, daddy, I'll be the best behaved ever!" she declared and Kevin finally laughed a little under his breath and patted Heather's back.
"And you thought you had him wrapped around your little finger," Embry said to Amber with a chuckle.
"Gepeitscht wie das Familienschwein," (whipped like the family pig) Amber muttered under her breath with good humor and Alphonse chuckled.
"Did I not warn you, Kevin?" Alphonse said.
It was an extremely long drive and by the time they finally arrived, Heather bolted out of the limo desperate to stretch her legs. Having much the same sentiment, Amber's reprimanding was gentle to say the least, only telling her to stay close to them. Having the invitation on hand, the group went up to the front entrance of the massive house where there was even security present. Upon seeing the invitation, they were given entry and Amber wasted no time asking where the powder room is so she could attend to Levi.
"Darling," Anastasia said to Harold, "I'm going to join Amber. Would you be so kind to wait for us here?"
"We'll wait," Kevin said and Harold, Embry and Alphonse agreed before the two walked off and Heather followed behind them.
"Kevin Black?" a voice came and Kevin turned to look at a man that, while he looked vaguely familiar, Kevin couldn't pin where he'd seen the man from. "And Alphonse Heidelberg too? It's been years."
"Who are you?" Alphonse asked perhaps a touch snarky but Kevin stayed cordial.
"You're a fellow Alumni I assume? Forgive me, I recognize your face, but the name is escaping me."
"We were in the same trial group you and I," he smiled. "Taylor Hennessey."
"Oh!" Kevin smiled, "My God, I'm so sorry. How have you been? It's been years."
"Don't say how many," the man joked. He still had his brown hair from his youth but it was speckled with grays all over. "You obviously aged far more gracefully than the rest of us."
"I'm only 54," Kevin joked and shook hands with the man. "So what brings you here?"
"I'm on the campaign trail with Senator Kennedy," he smiled. "I'm in the business of ensuring he looks as good as possible. I can't fix that he's Catholic and extremely young compared to other candidates but I think we can get around that pretty easy. I'll bet you anything we'll have the vote of every woman in America as soon as he flashes that smile."
"Yes, he does strike me as a lady's man," Harold said.
"Forgive me, I haven't said hello," Taylor said and started introducing himself. "I'm Taylor Hennessey. Kevin and I worked on the same trail together back when we went to Yale together. Are you associates of his?"
"Partners actually," Harold smiled. "I'm Harold Fitzgerald."
"Any relation to Fitzgerald real-estate tycoons?"
"I wouldn't say 'tycoons'," Harold chuckled, "but yes, I'm one in the same. I attended Harvard and was lucky enough to work for Mr. Black and Mr. Heidelberg and became one of the partners."
"Well, congratulations to you," Taylor smiled. "And it's good to see you again, Alphonse. How is the wife?"
"In Paris," Alphonse said.
"You did not join her?"
"No, I'm afraid not," Alphonse said. "Anyway, Harold fails to mention he's been given the privilege of being married to my daughter as well."
"Is that so?" Taylor chuckled. "Well congratulations again. Any children?"
"Our son," Harold said. "We call him Hal. Sadly, Grandpa doesn't like the name, but the Harold Fitzgerald name must prevail."
"Well, naturally," Taylor chuckled. "What about you, Kevin? I heard you'd gotten married?"
"Yes, at last," Kevin smiled. "Our second child turned 1 in July." As if on cue, Levi went straight to Kevin and hugged his leg likely so he'd be able to keep balance more than anything. "Speaking of which, this is Levi." Kevin glanced back and saw Heather, Anastasia and Heather returning. "That little girl is our daughter Heather and that's my wife Amber," Kevin said to Taylor and then said to Amber, "Amber, guess who I met."
"An old friend?" Amber asked.
"A very old friend," the man chuckled. "You must be the lucky Mrs. Black."
"And happy to be so lucky," Amber smiled. "How do you know Kevin?"
"We went to Yale together," Taylor said. "Is that a German accent I hear?"
"I'm French by birth, but I was blessed to be adopted by a couple from Munich. Kevin found me hiding in a closet when the Germans invaded Chateau and I was given shelter with a Synagogue in town until I was adopted."
"You're Jewish? Goodness, and you lived in Germany?"
"It's a touchy subject, so let's not discuss that if it's alright," Kevin quickly stepped in the instant he noticed Amber getting slightly deflated and uncomfortable.
"Oh," Taylor said and then, when the reality of the situation apparently dawned on him, he looked extremely sympathetic, "My God. You're very lucky indeed, Mrs. Black."
"I don't believe we've been introduced," Embry stepped in so they could immediately change the subject. "I'm Embry Call. I'm a childhood friend of Kevin. We served in the Army together as well."
"And what do you do, Mr. Call? I swear I've heard of you, but it's been so long."
"I'm a contractor," Embry said. "When the depression hit, I got heavily involved in the reconstruction programs that were implemented and I guess you could say I found my niche. So there was a silver lining to the Crash of '29 at least."
"That's certainly one way to look at it," Taylor chuckled and then looked at Anastasia. "You must be the former Lady Heidelberg now Mrs. Fitzgerald."
"My grandma was Lady Heidelberg," Anastasia giggled and allowed Taylor to take her hand and place a kiss on his briefly. "You would be correct, though. I'm daughter to the former Baronet Alphonse Heidelberg and Former Princess Anastasia."
"Not Romanov of course," Taylor joked.
"Certainly not," Anastasia giggled. "My mother's family fled from Moscow after the royal family was murdered and they'd since resided in Paris. They were fortunate to be able to flee the country before the Bolsheviks took hold and the communist party became established."
"Fortunate indeed," Taylor said. "I hope you'll forgive my being flustered. I've never been in the presence of a princess."
"Oh, stop," Anastasia giggled. "So what is it you do, Mr. Hennessey?"
"Please, call me Taylor," he said. "I'm part of the PR team working with Senator Kennedy."
"Ah, yes. Getting a head start in the campaign," Anastasia said.
"It's never too early to start," Taylor said. "Please, let me take you inside. I'll show you where the bar is so you can help yourselves to some drinks."
"The man that invited us said Frank Sinatra is going to be singing here?" Kevin asked.
"Oh, yes, he arrived I think about fifteen minutes ago. Last I saw, he was schmoozing with the guests while the stage and set up was worked on. I take it you're a fan?"
"I am," Amber smiled.
"Then you're in for a treat, Mrs. Black," Taylor said and continued to lead them all to the bar. Embry was perturbed to find out they didn't have beer but he settled for whiskey on the rocks and Kevin, Alphonse and Harold got the same time while Anastasia had brandy and Amber took only water. Once they had their drinks and Taylor and led them to the ballroom area where all the other guests were, Jean Donovan caught sight of them and excused himself from the other guests to come and welcome Kevin.
"Kevin," Jean said and extended his hand which Kevin accepted. "I'm so happy you were able to come."
"I figure it's a good time to find perspective new clients," Kevin said.
"Way ahead of you, Kevin," Jean chuckled. "I've been bragging about you to my fair share of people in the market for a new lawyer."
"The Pied Piper strikes again," Alphonse joked.
"I prefer 'Iron Thumb'," Jean said and then looked at Amber. "And you must be Mrs. Black. I've seen your picture all over the man's desk not to mention your children. I feel like I've already met the family."
"Just a subtle reminder to keep his time in New York brief," Amber smiled. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Donovan. This is our daughter Heather and our son Levi. Heather, Levi, say hello to Mr. Donovan."
"Hello Mr. Donovan," Heather said politely and bowed her head just a little and looked back up at the man.
"She's stunning, Kevin. She'll have to beat the boys away with a stick when she grows up," Jean said and Embry noticed the twitch in Kevin's eye. Embry was in agreement, but Kevin remained friendly.
"She takes after her father," Amber smiled.
"You reach out to me when she's older, Kevin. I'll make sure she lands a respectable public figure," Jean chuckled. That made Embry's eye twitch irritably, but he kept his mouth shut.
"You're too kind, Jean," Kevin said. Then Frank Sinatra's voice filled the room as he started getting the crowd ready for him to sing.
"I believe this is the reason you came," Jean smiled. "I'll have to find my date. Later I'll introduce you to a few friends of mine."
"I can't wait," Kevin said and Jean finally walked away. Once he was gone, Embry shivered a little.
"Honestly, Kevin, sometimes you're so fake with people it hurts," Embry said.
"You don't know the half of it," Kevin sighed heavily.
"I take it you don't like him very much?" Anastasia asked.
"Between you and me, he's a weasel masquerading as a man, but that's beside the point," Kevin said and then looked at Heather. "Heather?"
"Yes, daddy?" Heather asked.
"Don't ever marry someone in politics."
"Okay," she said readily and Kevin gently patted her head.
"That's my girl," Kevin said and then he looked at Embry. "Can you keep an eye on Heather and Levi for a while?"
"Fine with me," Embry said.
Embry took Heather and Levi and Alphonse ended up staying near him while Harold and Anastasia and Kevin and Amber went to the dance floor waiting for Frank Sinatra to start singing. Finally, he started after schmoozing the crowd and began to sing The Way You Look Tonight. It was the most they'd enjoyed themselves since they arrived as Kevin and Amber swayed together to the music. Amber was humming to the music while Kevin gently twirled her and slowly spun her around.
"This made the trip worth it," Amber smiled.
"It better have," Kevin teased and kissed the tip of her nose.
"Daddy!" Heather came up to them through the crowd and reached up for him. "I want to dance! I want to dance!"
"Two dance partners at once? I'd say that makes me the luckiest man at the party," Kevin chuckled and kneeled down to get Heather in his arms and took Amber back to him with his free arm.
After the song, Amber ran to Embry to grab Levi so she could hold them and the three of them could dance together as a family while Frank Sinatra sang I've Got You Under My Skin. Another song later, there was an excitement that filled the room as the man the party was devoted to made an appearance but it would only be for the hour before he had to leave again. Kevin and Amber didn't go to see the man but several, if not most in attendance, went to meet the senator but Amber and Kevin could see him from their spot on the dance floor.
"How old is he?"
"I know he's at least forty," Kevin said. "So he's pretty young as far as potential presidential candidates go. He's not the nominee yet, but if he keeps this up, I'll bet he'll get it."
"Do you know if Eisenhower is running for reelection?"
"I don't think so I'm afraid," Kevin said.
"Maybe we should meet him. If he does become the nominee, it might be worth meeting him and trying to get to know him."
"Kevin," Jean Donovan approached. "Let me introduce you to the future Democratic nominee. If you play your cards right, you might earn the right to call him 'Jack'."
Since they were invited, Kevin and Amber followed Jean with their children in arm through the crowd to meet the Senator. When they were close enough, Amber realized she understood why Jean might compare Kevin to the Senator. He had that same charming, handsome smile that made you want to agree to anything and the fact that he himself was extremely handsome certainly didn't hurt. Jean was eventually able to get the Senator's attention and waved for Kevin and Amber to come forward.
"Senator, I'm pleased to introduce you to Kevin Black," Jean introduced. Senator Kennedy extended a hand that Kevin accepted.
"I'm told you're the one that got Jean away from the firing squad," Senator Kennedy chuckled.
"I'm afraid so," Kevin said in a joking tone but completely serious unbeknownst to them. "Getting a head start on campaigning I see."
"The United States is a big country with a lot of people to please. I'm just getting a head start," the senator said and then looked at Amber. His smile to her changed ever so slightly and Kevin noticed the change. "And who is this lovely lady?"
"This is my wife, Amber," Kevin said perhaps a little too quickly, but Amber smiled and was polite.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Senator," Amber said. "Did Mrs. Kennedy join you?"
"No, I'm afraid Jackie is back home but she's wishing me luck from afar. We're expecting our first child very soon," he answered.
"That's wonderful, Senator," Amber smiled. "Congratulations to you and Mrs. Kennedy."
"Thank you for saying, Amber," Kennedy said. "Are you from Germany?"
"I was born in France and raised in Germany," Amber said.
"You wouldn't believe it, Jack. She's a holocaust survivor," Jean said to the Senator and both Amber and Kevin gawked at him. Amber because she was mortified it was brought up and Kevin for the same reason as well as knowing he never told Mr. Donovan that.
"Are you? How did you survive?" Senator Kennedy asked.
"If it's all the same, Senator, I would prefer we not discuss this," Kevin spoke up.
"You're right. That's not appropriate," Senator Kennedy, to Kevin's relief, agreed. "So, Mr. Black, Jean tells me you're a veteran."
"Yes," Kevin said. "I was a Sergeant in the Army during the Great War and I served again as a Lieutenant during the Second World War."
"And a recipient of the Medal of Honor to boot as I hear it," he said.
"I earned it during the Great War," Kevin said.
"How old are you if you don't mind me asking, Mr. Black?" Senator Kennedy asked.
"I'm 54," Kevin answered honestly.
"I'm trying to find his secret to his youthful appearance," Jean joked.
"When you find out, make sure you tell me," Senator Kennedy chuckled.
"Mommy," Levi whimpered and Amber realized what he needed and smiled at the Senator.
"I'm sorry, but I need to take care of Levi," Amber said. "It was a pleasure to meet you, Senator."
"The pleasure's all mine, Amber. And if we ever have the pleasure to meet again, please call me Jack."
"As you wish, Jack," Amber smiled and walked away with Heather and Levi.
"She's stunning, Mr. Black," Senator Kennedy said. "So she's really a Holocaust survivor?"
"Yes," Kevin said, instantly tense. "Jean, please don't bring that up. I'm sure you've heard like anyone else what the victims of those camps were put through. Amber's come a long way and I don't want her to be reminded of that time in her life."
"Is that how you two met?" Senator Kennedy asked.
"No, we met during the Great War when I served in the trenches at Chateau."
"So you would have been…..fourteen when you served?"
"I was thirteen when I enlisted and I was a Sergeant at fifteen."
"That's remarkable," Senator Kennedy said with admiration. "What inspired you to join the army so young?"
"A desire to make something better of myself," Kevin answered honestly.
"It appears to have worked," Senator Kennedy replied. "So if you met during the Great War, how did you two come to be married so many years later?"
"She was a child when we met and a German couple adopted her. We kept in touch and fell in love years later, but by the time we could start making plans to bring her and her family to America and for us to marry, the Nazis were overtaking Germany. They tried to flee to France and it worked for a while, but they were turned away when they tried to enter the country on the St. Louis."
"Did they have their citizenship?" Kennedy asked.
"I can assure you, Senator, they did. Not that it mattered. President Roosevelt saw fit to send a boat of Jews to their death regardless," Kevin said bitterly.
"That was a poor decision; I agree," Senator Kennedy said. "She survived at least."
"Only after five years in Auschwitz and Dachau," Kevin said bitterly again. "When I found her, they'd starved her and she was barely coherent."
"You saved her from the camps?" Senator Kennedy asked.
"Yes, I did," Kevin said. "I carried her out myself after we captured Dachau."
"That's incredible," he said. "Sounds to me like you're her knight in shining armor." Kevin didn't say anything partially because he noticed a hint of disappointment in the man's voice. Then someone walked up to the senator.
"Senator, we need to get going," the man said.
"Thank you," he said and looked at Jean. "It was good to see you Jean. And Mr. Black, it's been a pleasure. You're an American Hero." The two shook hands.
"Thank you for your time, Senator," Kevin said.
"And keep an eye on her, Mr. Black. I'd bet she has a line of admirers even now." Senator Kennedy winked at Kevin and he walked away with the person that had come to get him. Jean was chuckling but he stopped when he saw the hard look on Kevin's face.
"Are you alright, Kevin?" Jean asked.
"I'm just not keen on a man implying my wife is unfaithful to me," Kevin said. "Least of all when he's even entertaining being one of those 'admirers' as he puts it."
"He's a bit of a flirt I'll admit but he's a worthy candidate. If a president had to be a saint, America would never have had a president at all," Jean said. "Don't let him bother you."
"Let me just be blunt and say that if he wants to be someone's admirer he should stick with his wife," Kevin said. "Thank you for the introduction, Jean. If it's all right with you, I think I'll find Amber."
"Of course," Jean said. "I'm sorry if he offended you."
"It's not your fault," Kevin said and patted the man's shoulder. "You're only crime is money laundering."
"Too soon, Kevin," Jean managed to joke but clearly wanted to end the conversation.
"If I don't see you again while we're here, it was nice seeing you," Kevin said and walked away to find Amber. She was with Alphonse and Embry when he found her. She was holding Levi and Heather was standing next to Embry.
"Oh, there you are," Amber smiled. "Did the Senator leave?"
"Yeah, he did," Kevin said. "How about we go out to the gardens for a bit?" he asked Amber. "I'd like to get some fresh air."
"I'd love that," Amber agreed. Heather stayed with Embry while Amber and Kevin walked through the house to the back where the huge garden was. There were loads of people outside enjoying their drinks and conversing with one another. There was a pleasant breeze outside that Kevin desperately needed. They could hear Frank Sinatra start singing again from inside and Amber started humming to the song.
"Are you having a good time?"
"I am," Amber smiled. "It was lovely to dance with you and our children."
"I thought it was pretty romantic," Kevin smiled. "I'll be returning with you tomorrow. I want to go home."
"I want you home too," Amber said. They smiled and shared a brief kiss.
They all stayed at the party another two hours before they finally went to the limo and made the trip back into the City. Kevin let Alphonse know he'd be returning to Washington and that he'd see him again either next he was in Washington or next Kevin had to come to New York: whichever came first. That Sunday evening when they all finally returned to Washington, Kevin was happy to be home and even went on patrol that night desperate to get the past few months out of his mind. By November of that year, the news was filled with the story of the birth of the first child of John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie, making them all the more celebrities in the eyes of the American people. Salem was still in Cuba during this time mostly on the sub but sometimes able to go on land. When he was on land, he would always visit Arturo. He was in Cuba until December of 1957 but before they left the island, Salem was able to visit Arturo one more time, having dinner with him that night. After dinner and saying goodbye, he said to Arturo, "If you're ever visiting America, you look me up, okay?"
"You can count on it," Arturo smiled and the two of them finally said their goodbyes. Salem sincerely hoped he'd be able to see Arturo again someday.
After leaving Cuba, their sub went to the base in Florida where they docked briefly, but they soon left again to go out to sea. He would be out to sea for the remainder of 1958 and for part of 1959, but once he'd completed his sea tour, he'd put in the request to be returned to Washington for his land stationing. He was hoping that for his next sea tour he'd be able to go to the Pacific; see more new things. Though it was much later than originally planned, Yon and Tae Woon made the trip to Washington to visit late in January. Since they would be visiting, Eun Mi and the boys would be staying with them in the house back on the tribe, but JJ would stay at the General Store so he was close to Hailey. His mood had improved marginally since Leah's passing, but he was still extremely moody at times and rather short tempered. More so that was his usual disposition anyway. While Eun Mi had gone into the city to pick up Yon and Tae Woon from the apartment with Suerro's help, JJ was at the shop.
"Uncle Hailey," JJ said when it was nearing closing time. "Did you want to come over for dinner tonight? I'll bet Eun Mi's planning a huge dinner for Yon and Tae Woon."
"That's alright," Hailey said and gently shook his head. "I'd prefer to go straight home."
"In that case, why don't I come over and I'll make you something."
"You can barely boil water much less make dinner," Hailey said.
"I'll get us dinner from somewhere," JJ said. "How about that diner that just opened up down the road?"
"I highly doubt they serve rabbit food, JJ."
"Don't worry about me. I'm more concerned about you," JJ answered. "You've been getting skinny and you're worrying me."
"Oh, how the tables have turned," Hailey grumbled. "Fine, but only if you're paying."
"Absolutely," JJ agreed. When it was closing time, JJ called the house and was relieved Eun Mi had returned home with Tae Woon and Yon. He let her know he'd be taking Hailey out for dinner since he'd declined to come to the house for dinner. Since Eun Mi hadn't gotten started with dinner, she insisted that they all come into town so they could all have dinner together. Hailey grumbled in protest but ultimately agreed when JJ relayed the message, so they waited at the General Store until Eun Mi arrived with their sons, Yon and Tae Woon and Hailey stood to meet them.
"You must be Yon and Tae Woon Mun," Hailey said. Yon nodded, bowed respectfully and then extended her hand to shake.
"Yes, I'm Yon and this is my husband Tae Woon. Eun Mi and I met when she worked as a cook at the M.A.S.H. with me she's become like a daughter to me and my husband. You are JJ's uncle right?"
"Technically I'm his cousin by marriage, but JJ's father determined I was 'Uncle' and the title stuck."
"Well, regardless of relation, we've heard a lot about you. The way JJ speaks of you I'd thought you like a second father."
"I could never fill such large shoes," Hailey said. "Figuratively and literally."
"Eun Mi told us about your wife's passing. I'm very sorry for your loss. She sounds like she was a wonderful woman."
"There's no one like her," Hailey said. "Now let's get going so we can get our seats. I've heard from JJ the flight to and from Korea is about as miserable as it can get, so you must be starving."
"Like you wouldn't believe," Yon smiled.
The group finally left the General Store locking up for the day and made the walk a few blocks to the diner that had opened up about a year prior. Given there were so many of them, it took a little while to get a table, but eventually they were able to be seated in a corner with the windows. JJ and Eun Mi only got water but she ordered for the boys along with everyone else placing their orders. Since they served it, JJ ordered a beer if only to tide him over.
"So Hailey, have you always lived in Forks?" Yon asked.
"No, I'm originally from Port Angeles. I moved here to help out my Uncle Mitch who owned the General Store before he retired and left it to me."
"Do you like it better than the city?"
"I didn't used to, but it grew on me after I met Leah," Hailey said. "I'd joined my Uncle to the reservation for the trading season and Leah and I started bickering. She threw a baseball at my head when we were leaving. About a year later, she caught me fishing on Quileute lands and she tried getting rid of me. She used the threaten she'd get Jacob to reprimand me if I didn't leave."
"Now, Jacob is your grandfather right?" Yon asked JJ and he nodded.
"He wasn't chief at the time, but he's always been the muscle regardless," Hailey said. "Anyway, she never actually told on me at least not at the time and we finally started to actually talk to each other. By the next year, we were married."
"And you do not have children right?" Yon asked.
"I'd determined Leah and I would not have children but despite my best efforts, his father," Hailey pointed at JJ, "decided he liked me for some reason and he became like a son to me no matter how much I pushed that boy away," Hailey said of Jae. "Then JJ was born and he's as much a grandson to me as he is to Embry Sr."
"It's always good to have family I say," Yon said.
"Do you and your husband have children?"
"We had a daughter, but she died of illness before the way," Yon lamented. "Her loss was too painful for us so we never had more children and do not intend to. When I met Eun Mi, I found I love her like a daughter. Certainly she could never replace our daughter, but she's a wonderful young woman all the same. And it is nice to have two wonderful grandchildren," she said as she gently held Mae Sun's chin affectionately and then did the same to Jae Sun.
"할미, 배고프다," (halmi, baegopeuda / grandma, I'm hungry) Mae Sun said in his tiny voice.
"저녁 식사는 몇 분 안에 도착할 것입니다," (jeonyeog sigsaneun myeoch bun an-e dochaghal geos-ibnida / Dinner will arrive in a few minutes) Yon said to Mae Sun pinching his chin again and leaning down to kiss his cheek.
"So do you understand this shit or are you as in the dark as me?" Hailey asked JJ.
"I know baegopeuda means 'I'm hungry', so I'd assume Yon's just telling him to be patient," JJ said. "I can't speak it but I know a few basic phrases if I hear them."
"I worry those two speak Korean better than they speak English," Hailey said.
"Don't worry, they speak English just fine," JJ said and then looked right at Jae Sun, "so if they do something wrong and you tell them in English, they're know exactly what you're saying. Isn't that right Jae Sun?"
"I didn't do anything," Jae Sun protested.
"Just in case," JJ teased and returned his attention to Hailey. "They're just speaking Korean because Yon and Tae Woon are here."
"Don't they speak nothing but Korean with Eun Mi?"
"Only when I'm at work. She speaks English when I'm home," JJ said. "I promise you they speak English just fine. Did I tell you Jae Sun decided he wanted to learn Japanese."
"Why the hell does he want to do that?" Hailey asked.
"Jae Sun wants to learn so he can read and understand the comics Akihiko gave him and the ones he makes for him."
"You mean the ones where you're a giant boot?" Hailey chuckled. "That's brilliant I must say."
"Right now he thinks Koro-Koro is resourceful and clever, but come adulthood he'll realize that Koro-Koro's a big asshole that just won't leave American alone," JJ said.
"One can only hope," Hailey said.
"It's not just the damn bird either. Akihiko expanded the narrative to include the flea bag."
"You mean that cat Eun Mi pussy-whipped you into bringing home?"
"The flea bag, yes," JJ said. "That stupid cat comes and goes from the house as he pleases but he's always back at night and sleeps at the end of the bed."
"Who's been feeding that cat since you all moved to the store?"
"Nesia was kind enough to volunteer her time," JJ said with a hint of sarcasm. "Uncle Embry's helping her build a little house so she's planning to get herself a cat of her own as soon as she has her own place."
"Good for her," Hailey said. "It's about time she got her butt out of the house."
"Relax, Uncle Hailey. She's only 24," JJ defended.
"I realize this is rich coming from me, but has she found herself a husband yet?"
"She's not seeing anyone no," JJ said. "Maybe she'll decide she wants to wait to get married until she's thirty," JJ teased.
"I suppose for her that's fine," Hailey said. He glanced at Yon and Tae Woon, but the two of them were engrossed with speaking with Eun Mi. "Do they know about…you know?"
"No," JJ said. "I suspect they would be supportive if they knew, but Eun Mi hasn't told them and I'm content to keep quiet if she prefers it that way."
"Those two are keeping quiet?" Hailey asked, surprised, pointing at Mae Sun and Jae Sun.
"They know not to talk about it," JJ said. "If there's anything that gets drilled into the head of every child in our tribe from an early age, it's a code of silence and for good reason."
"No kidding," Hailey said. Finally, their food arrived so those that were eating dug in. Since Eun Mi was feeding Mae Sun, there weren't eyes on her over her not eating. Jae Sun was able to eat his food without Eun Mi's help unlike his little brother so he dug in as soon as their food got there. "You better slow down, boy, or you'll turn into a balloon," Hailey said to Jae Sun when he'd gobbled down his fries smothered in ketchup in minutes.
"I'm not even sure it will," JJ said. "He just keeps getting taller rather than chubby."
"He better watch it so it stays that way," Hailey said. "Maybe he'll get lucky and wind up as tall as you."
"The way he eats, he probably will," JJ teased while looking at Jae Sun.
"Jae Sun," Eun Mi scolded, "slow down or you'll make yourself sick."
Jae Sun did as Eun Mi said, but he still finished before everyone else. Since he'd finished, he was getting bored so JJ asked their waitress if they happened to have paper and crayons to keep Jae Sun occupied. Thankfully they had some and Jae Sun drew while everyone else finished their dinner. Every new thing he drew he would show to Eun Mi and JJ for approval then to Yon once they'd given their praise. Always eager to get him practicing, when Jae Sun showed her something he'd drawn, she would make him write in Hangul what it was he'd drawn and, given that she at least knew that part, would make him repeat the picture's name in Japanese and get him to write down the Kanji or, failing that, the Hiragana or Katakana. She was far from fluent, but she remembered bits and pieces of what Kai had taught Jae Sun thus far. Edward was getting Jae Sun started with more in depth reading and writing, but it was only after he'd practice his roman alphabet for the day.
"For as much as I tease and make fun of him, he's really a very smart kid," Hailey said to JJ about Jae Sun.
"He's smarter than me; that's for damn sure," JJ said with a light smile. "He must get it from Eun Mi."
"He's learning your tribe's language on top of all of this isn't he?"
"Grandpa Jacob would never tolerate the grandkids not knowing Quileute," JJ chuckled a little. "Grandma Renesmee usually makes sure he's getting some speaking lessons in Quileute even if it's only for two hours."
"Busy kid," Hailey said. "Has he started going to the school?"
"He starts August this year," JJ said. "Right now, he's just consumed with languages."
"Could work for the government as a translator one of these days," Hailey said.
"I don't want him to join the army," JJ said. "The way I'm hearing it from Salem last I heard from him, Cuba's going to hell in a hand basket right now. Apparently things aren't going well in Vietnam either."
"You don't think Salem will be thrown into a war too do you?"
"I'd like to think not, but at this point it might be a bit naïve. Mom's just hoping if anything does happen that Salem won't be too involved. I think she's hoping being in the Navy will make his involvement less risky."
"I wouldn't think so," Hailey said.
"Unless the Cubans or the Vietnamese can get a hold of anti-sub arsenal, he might be in better shape. Of course, the Soviets might be happy to throw a few of those their way. Dmitri can't stand that term: Soviets."
"Who's Dmitri again?"
"He's Evalina's grandpa," JJ said. "I don't know if you've met him. At least not officially. He's Russian born, but from a very long time ago. He was never political per se but he was proud of his heritage. Evalina's family visit all the time and Evalynn and Caleb get quite the language lessons themselves. Evalina will speak to them in Italian sometimes and she's been teaching them German. They'll practice speaking with me sometimes."
"Proper German I hope," Hailey said.
JJ smiled, "It's not the Austrian accent like Kevin gets from Alphonse. But anyway, Dmitri's been teaching those kids Russian too. He's insisted Evalina make sure they're kept fluent when he's not here to teach them."
"So English, Italian, Russian, German and Quileute," Hailey said. "Am I safe in assuming those are all very different languages?"
"You bet," JJ said, "but she's been managing somehow. I think Evalynn started learning French since starting school, but she seems to take best to Italian from what I've seen." JJ chuckled a little when he remembered something. "You should hear Caleb. Poor kid's learning five languages at once and he'll get them mixed up sometimes."
"Sounds annoying," Hailey said.
"Evalina will usually just tell him to pick a language and repeat what he said, but she usually understands what he said from the beginning," JJ said. "I don't think hardly any of the grandkids don't speak at least two or three languages. Salem and Nesia aren't really good with it, but they know some German."
"Not enough for my liking," Hailey said and patted JJ's shoulder. "Thank goodness for you."
"I love you too, Uncle Hailey," JJ smiled. There was a brief silence between them. Jae Sun was still coloring and Mae Sun had finished eating and looked ready to fall asleep while Eun Mi spoke with Yon and Tae Woon.
"I spoke with Kevin the other day," Hailey broke the silence suddenly.
"What about?"
"A will," Hailey said matter-of-factly. He looked up at JJ and noticed he looked upset so he waved his hand dismissively. "Don't be like that, boy. I'm getting old and you know it. Losing Leah just reminded me how true that is."
"I really don't want to talk about this, Uncle Hailey," JJ said.
"I know you don't," Hailey said sympathetically, "but we have to. I think it goes without saying that I'm leaving the store to you. I don't have any overwhelming debt in my name. Just the car that's still being paid for but you can sell that."
"Can we please not talk about this now?" JJ pleaded.
The two looked at each other a moment before Hailey sighed a little and said, "Fine. We won't talk about it now. All I'm trying to say is everything's been taken care of."
JJ didn't say anything until the waitress came up to ask if they wanted dessert or the check. Jae Sun pleaded for a cookie and JJ didn't really have the will to say no at the moment. Eun Mi didn't say anything but she noticed JJ looked extremely upset. They all left after JJ paid and they went to Hailey's house first to drop him off. Then they started going back to the General Store so JJ could drive them back to the tribe. JJ was quiet the whole drive back and once they were in front of the house, he told them he'd be going back to the General Store.
"Yon," Eun Mi said, "I'm sorry to ask, but would you mind looking after Jae Sun and Mae Sun for the night? I'm going to stay at the General Store with JJ tonight."
"Sure," Yon said and then got the boys following her and Tae Woon up to the house.
"Is everything okay?" JJ asked.
"I was about to ask you that," Eun Mi said. "You've been upset since we left the diner."
"I'm alright," JJ said. "You don't have to come up to the General Store with me."
"I want to," Eun Mi said. JJ shrugged and started driving back. "Did something happen between you and Hailey?"
"We just had a talk I didn't want to have," JJ said. "He told me he talked to Uncle Kevin about a will the other day."
Eun Mi was quiet a moment before she finally nodded gently. "That's a wise decision." JJ didn't say anything so the remainder of the driver was quiet. When they arrived and got out of the car, Eun Mi walked around and gave JJ a hug. "It's just a legal procedure," Eun Mi reassured. "Hailey's still got plenty of crabby years ahead of him."
JJ still didn't say anything and he didn't want to talk about the matter anymore anyway. So JJ kneeled down so he could lift Eun Mi bridal style into his arms and carried her up to the General Store. Contrary to what an onlooker might think, there was nothing romantic about the exchange. JJ just wanted to go to bed and Eun Mi didn't want to push JJ any further and make him more upset. They just went upstairs together and Eun Mi kept JJ close to her the whole night to comfort him. Eun Mi left the General Store after she made JJ breakfast and promised to see him later but made sure not to bring up what Hailey had talked about the previous night.
