Chapter 127

As JJ had promised he'd do, he returned home from work every day and then over the weekend they'd stay at the General Store together so they could visit Hailey. There were a number of children in the neighborhood that would play outside in the snow and Jae Sun and Mae Sun would go outside to join them while JJ, Eun Mi and Hailey would stare out the window ready to bark at the children if it was needed but really just making sure they were okay. The children engaged in a snowball fight and Jae Sun kept Mae Sun behind him with orders to make snowballs for him to throw until they had a rhythm making Jae Sun one of the more efficient combatants. Hailey wound up falling asleep leaving JJ and Eun Mi the only eyes on the kids, but they were behaving well enough.

"So guess what I discovered this morning," Eun Mi said while they looked outside.

"What's that?"

"I notice I have a little bump growing," Eun Mi said. JJ looked at her and she looked at him with a gentle smile. Realizing what she meant, JJ moved his chair closer to Eun Mi so he could touch her belly and, lo and behold, there was the smallest little protrusion. "I'm seeing Kyle on Monday to be sure, but I think it's safe to assume I'm pregnant."

"I think so," JJ smiled as he rubbed her belly affectionately. "We know Eun Mae for a girl. What if it's a boy?"

"Eun So," Eun Mi said.

"Okay," JJ said. "Eun Mae or Eun So it is." JJ glanced over his shoulder at Hailey to make sure he was still asleep and when he was sure, JJ got on one knee so he could press his ear to her belly and hug her.

They waited to announce it until after Eun Mi had her appointment with Kyle. As she figured, she was indeed pregnant. Kyle estimated she must have conceived around Christmas or New Year's and would be due end of August or beginning of September. Eun Mi was quick to write to Yon and Tae Woon to let them know and their reply came a month later letting her know they'd be visiting for the summer; news that Jae Sun and Mae Sun were very delighted for. Salem heard the news from Natalie shortly after he'd arrived in Florida and was getting settled in. His days were long and busy, but when he wasn't on duty, he got the opportunity to call home. Thankfully, being in the U.S., a call home was not so difficult.

"So another nephew or niece with a really weird name?" Salem joked when Natalie told him.

"I'd thought they were strange at first, but they've really grown on me," Natalie said. "I hope they have a girl. Two boys are enough of a handful without adding another."

"You'd know," Salem teased. "So mom, how about I work something out so I have a week off over the summer and you can come visit? You'd love it here, mom. It's sunny all the time, it's really hot and the beaches are great. And getting food here wouldn't be so hard for you. They have so much fruit here that it'll make your head spin. You know what we're getting every morning at breakfast? Orange Juice. Fresh squeezed too by local vendors no less."

"That does sound amazing," Natalie said.

"Oh, it is," Salem said. "What's better is when you can get it fresh squeezed right when they pick it off the tree. Only get to have it that good every once and a while, but it's a treat."

"It certainly sounds like it," Natalie said. "Where would I stay while I'm there?"

"There are plenty of hotels," Salem said. "Lots of them right next to the beach too. I'll pay for your room. I'll even make sure it's the best one in the hotel."

"That would be very sweet of you, Salem," Natalie smiled.

"So mom," Salem said after a light silence while he smiled and then figuring he'd just come out and break the news to her.

"What?"

"I got another tattoo," Salem said. There was a silence on the other line for several seconds.

"Of?" Natalie finally asked.

"I got a pinup tattoo of a brunette dressed as a sailor and she's sitting on the anchor of my first tattoo," Salem answered. Natalie didn't answer. "I see you're not terribly impressed."

"Can't say as I am," Natalie answered honestly and Salem laughed a little.

"The artist did a really good job, mom," Salem said. "I promise, I did my research until I found an artist that was really good at doing portraits. Once I found him, I just told him to make a woman dressed as a sailor with a face he'd want to look at and he gave me exactly that. He's got good taste I must say."

"I'm sure he did, Salem," Natalie said.

"You should see this guy's workspace, mom. Pinups are a particular specialty of his and he's got pictures of women all over his desk in all manner of poses for reference. Specifically hands and feet holding things or in a particular pose. Next it'll be the larger pinup. She'll be on my left ribcage, have black hair and mixing cake batter," Salem said.

"Damn it, Salem," Natalie sighed.

"It'll look really good, mom," Salem promised. "I've seen this guy's other portrait work and he's really good."

"Salem, how are you going to explain that to your wife when you get married one day?" Salem was about to answer, but Natalie interrupted. "And not a word about your future wife thinking it's 'funny'."

"Oh, no, that tattoo won't be funny," Salem smiled to himself. "I dare say it'll be my favorite."

"Salem, if that tattoo of yours is distasteful in any fashion, I swear I'll…" Natalie started and then trailed off realizing she wasn't sure what she would do. Or could do, really. "I'll be really mad at you," she finally said.

"Don't be mad, mom," Salem pleaded in a teasing tone. "I've seen these pinup tattoos and the ones that are done well are really good. You just need the right tattoo artist."

"The right tattoo artist is irrelevant when the tattoo is vulgar."

"Don't be that way, mom," Salem said. "I promise, it won't be vulgar in the least."

"Forgive me but I don't believe you," Natalie sighed while Salem just smiled. After their brief silence, Natalie finally smiled and even laughed a little. "I miss having you home, Salem."

"I miss you too, mom," Salem said. "I'll call you as soon as I've worked something out with my superiors and make all the arrangements for you to come visit."

"I look forward to it," Natalie said. "Maybe by then you'll have met your imprint. Preferably before you get this pinup you keep talking about. Perhaps she'll knock some sense into you."

"You know what mom: I promise you she won't," Salem teased.

"That's what you think," Natalie answered but she couldn't help a smile. "In all seriousness, Salem, I just want you to be happy."

"I am happy, mom," Salem said. "Don't worry: when I find my imprint, you'll be the first to know."

Shortly thereafter, Salem and Natalie ended their call and he returned to duties for the day. As he'd promised, he spent a good deal of time researching hotels in the area, particularly ones on the water. It figures, all the hotels such as those came at a high cost, but it was a small sum as far as Salem was concerned. So when he found the perfect hotel, he booked the best available room for a week in July, giving him plenty of time to request the time off and be able to get it. He did so on a Sunday; a few friends joining him to the hotel before they were to go to a bar they'd heard about. Once he'd booked the room, Salem received his receipts and anything else he would need to send to Natalie so she could get the room placing them in his back pocket once as he left the hotel.

"This is a swanky place," Harry, another Sonarman that was stationed in Fort Lauderdale with him, said as they left the hotel. "I'll have to make sure my own mother never finds out you did something like this. She'll call me a bad son by comparison."

"Then don't tell her," Aaron, a Petty Officer, answered with a laugh. "I say we get going to the bar. You'll both love it I promise."

"What's so special about this place?" Salem asked.

"Women, boys," Aaron smiled. "That's what's special about it."

"Is prostitution legal in the state of Florida or something?" Harry joked.

"It's legal in all states, boys," Aaron said. "You pay for dinners, buy a dame things and for what? So they'll put out. What is that if not prostitution."

"Only if she puts out without expecting you to marry her," Harry said.

"And in our line of work, boys, those are the dames you want," Aaron said. "A girl that will put out and not expect a damn thing. You have to make your way through a few cheap whores so you can pleasure your future wife. They don't need to know of the training you underwent."

"I've never heard philandering referred to as 'training'," Salem laughed. "Are the drinks and food at least good enough to mend a man's wounded pride should he not find a lady friend for the night?"

"Don't worry, the food and drinks measure up," Aaron promised. "Now come one both of you. I don't know about you but I'm hungry, thirsty and eager."

"Thanks for sharing," Harry said and the three of them laughed as they walked down the boardwalk back into town.

They walked through the streets until they reached a huge bar that was named The Seagull's Nest featuring a giant, bright open sign and an advertisement for its singers that including several women in nylon black stockings and sparkling sailor uniforms clearly meant to lure in the numerous sailors that frequented the area. Upon Aaron's prompting, they showed off to the host at the front their military cards that would entitle them to discounts on food and drinks after which they were shown to their seats. They didn't wait long before a young woman approached their table to take their drink orders with a bright, sweet smile and sparkling eyes. When she left with their orders, Salem chuckled.

"Our waitress is friendly," Salem said.

"They're all friendly," Aaron said. "The way I hear it: Barron, the owner of this place, won't even give the girl an interview unless they have a bright smile."

"So first criteria is to smile?" Harry chuckled.

"I'll bet you it is," Aaron answered.

"Do you know the owner?"

"Only in passing," Aaron answered Salem. Then a round of applause went off that caught Aaron's attention making him look at the stage. When he did, he smiled. "Look at the stage. Barron's best girl is up."

Salem and Harry turned their chairs to look at the stage. A young woman with bright blonde hair, blue eyes and a slender figure came onto the stage with that same bright smile that all the waitresses were required to have if Aaron's story was to be believed. She was joined by two other girls, strategically so it seemed, that were brunette and red headed. Both wore bathing suits that showed off a bit of their midriffs, nylon stockings, and their hair was done up in the same curled style that was popular for pinup girls. The blonde started with 'Ain't there Anyone Here for Love' from Gentleman Prefer Blondes with the other girls acting as backup dancers. The blonde made a point to look at all the Navy men so they would feel special. She eventually looked at Salem. He smiled at her and his smile seemed to catch her attention for longer than the other patrons, but she eventually started looking around again. She did, however, look right at Salem when she had to sing, 'I like a beautiful hunk of man' portion of the song and kept her eyes on him until she finished singing.

After a prolonged applause for her, she moved on to yet another Marilyn Monroe song from the same movie: 'Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend'. The woman made sure she was looking around the room but she kept looking right at Salem, earning him a pat on the back here and there from his comrades once they'd noticed. After the song, the women left the stage following a bow and then going to the radio to turn on the record to play Elvis Presley music for the patrons. There were some momentary boos that resounded, demanding the girls sing again but they made quick work of the men reassuring they'd return to the stage after they'd had the chance to speak with all the patrons. That seemed to appease everyone and the girls were able to leave the stage.

"I see the blonde's got her eye on you. You lucky dog," Aaron chuckled and swatted Salem's shoulder just as he was taking a sip of his beer.

"She only looked at me," Salem said. "It doesn't mean anything. Besides," Salem took another sip of his beer, "this isn't the best beer I've had."

"I personally prefer the whiskey," Aaron said.

"For good reason," Harry said and then took a sip of the whiskey in question. Moments later, the blonde woman from the stage with the blonde hair came to their table now wearing a little shirt over her bathing suit; her nylon stockings still visible and her little white kitten heel shoes. "Well, good evening miss," Harry said as soon as he noticed her. "You sang beautifully tonight. Can we expect another performance soon?"

"Naturally," she said with a smile. Then she looked at Salem. He smiled pleasantly at her. "Did you enjoy the show, Sailor?"

"Yours is the most beautiful voice I've heard in Florida," Salem said and lifted his bottle to her.

"You are so kind," she said and then took a seat between Salem and Aaron. "So tell me," she continued, "what are your specialties?"

"I'm Petty Officer First Class Aaron Shaffer," Aaron said and extended his hand to her which she shook.

"Lieutenant Henry Christianson Diving Officer," Harry said and also extended his hand. She accepted and shook his as well but her attention then turned right to Salem.

"Petty Officer First Class Salem Dauer Sonarman," Salem answered with a smile and shook the hand she extended to him.

"Lilly Anne Tanner," she smiled, "Singer, dancer and sometimes waitress when we're short staffed."

"Sounds like a full plate," Aaron chuckled.

"Oh, but not so full a plate as the ones on your tables," Lilly smiled. "So are any of you Florida natives?"

"I am," Aaron smiled. "Originally from Fort Meyers."

"Oh," Lilly giggled, "It may be two hours away, but you're still very close to home."

"Don't remind me," Aaron joked.

"And what of you two?" she asked Salem and Harry.

"I'm from Maine," Harry said.

"Washington," Salem answered. "State," he added.

"You're both so far from home," Lilly lamented, but her gaze stayed on Salem. "You especially."

"I've been further," Salem said, waving his hand dismissively.

"This boy's got the tattoo's to prove it," Aaron chuckled.

"Boy my ass," Salem said and the three of them laughed, but Harry stopped them.

"Salem, we shouldn't swear in front of a lady," Harry warned.

"Oh, no men, don't hold your tongues on my account," Lilly giggled. "I assure you I've heard my father bark far worse."

"Of that I have no doubt," Aaron said. "I imagine a foul mouth might attract you then."

"Not too foul," Lilly smiled. "So how long can you be out before you have to return to base?"

"Our curfew's at midnight," Salem said.

"Oh, midnight," she smiled, "it's always good to have a privileged patron." Just then, the song playing on the record player turned to Love Me Tender, which seemed to grab Lilly's attention. "Oh! I love this song. Officer, would you be so kind as to dance with me?" she asked Salem.

"I don't see why not," Salem answered with a smile and took her hand to leave the table. As they were walking away, Harry and Aaron catcalled briefly and patted his shoulder, but he ignored them. It was an extremely slow song, so most anyone that was dancing was moving slowly to the music, but not many patrons were dancing unless it was with one of the waitresses.

"Alone at last," Lilly smiled.

"Well, Miss Tanner, if you wanted some time alone with me all you needed to do was ask," Salem teased. "So was this bar opened with the full intent of catering generously to Sailors?"

"Maybe," Lilly giggled. "The current owner bought this place in 1940 but if my memory serves right this place has been open since 1923."

"That's a good long time for a business to be open," Salem said. "And how long have you been working here?"

"About two years," Lilly said. "I got this job right out of high school. You should have heard my daddy holler when I got this job. The way he went on, you'd think he'd found out I was a prostitute."

"That's not good," Salem chuckled. "So you're twenty?"

"I turn twenty one over the summer," Lilly answered. "And you? How old are you Officer?"

"I'm 26," Salem said. "I turn twenty seven this year," he joked and Lilly giggled.

"You're funny," she said. "So tell me, Officer: do you have a lady back home? Or a wife?"

"Nope," Salem smiled. "I'm free as the tides of the sea."

"Spoken like a man that fully intends to keep it that way," Lilly smiled back.

"Not necessarily," Salem said. "I'm just waiting for the right woman to come along."

"How do you know she hasn't yet?" Lilly asked.

"When she does, I'll know," Salem said confidently. "In the meantime, I see no reason not to indulge in a ladies company."

"Oh, you're a devilish man aren't you?" Lilly giggled. Then the song ended so Salem led them back to the table. "Gentleman, I hope you'll be able to excuse me, but I need to get back on stage. Will you be here when I get back?"

"Only if you promise the two of us a dance," Aaron said.

"Absolutely Officer," Lilly smiled and then walked away. Once she was gone, Aaron and Harry wasted no time.

"So, hot shot, did you have fun?" Harry asked.

"She was very nice," Salem said.

"Is that all you have to say?" Aaron chuckled.

"Not much else to say honestly," Salem shrugged.

"Jesus, you're being cold," Aaron said and then chuckled as he was lighting his cigarette. "Oh well. Just means more for us."

"Me? Cold?" Salem asked and chuckled. "I was nothing of the sort."

Aaron and Harry laughed and enjoyed their drinks and cigarettes. Their conversation continued until Lilly and the two girls from before got back on stage to roaring applause for their return and they started singing together again, but the brunette sang the lead this time. Next song, the redhead took the lead and then the last song ended with Lilly singing the lead. As the show went on, their waitress from before took care of them being as sweet as could be and even sitting down with them to talk. She must have noticed prior that Lilly had paid greatest attention to Salem because the waitress gave the majority of her attention to Aaron and Harry, but she remained just as nice to Salem. When the girls left the stage, Lilly returned to the table but she had the other two girls following behind her.

"Good to see you, gentleman," Lilly smiled. "Caroline, did they have any drink orders left?" she asked the waitress sitting with them.

"Not yet," she said and then pulled out her note pad. "What can I get you?"

"I'll have another whiskey," Aaron said.

"I'm in a dry martini mood," Harry said.

"I'll have another beer, but I'd like something different. I didn't care for this one," Salem said. "The taste of hops was a little too strong."

"I'll get you something lighter," the waitress smiled as she wrote and then stood. "I'll be right back with your drinks. Did you want any more food? Our carrot cake is sublime."

"Oh no, I couldn't eat another bite," Harry said.

"I'll take a slice," Aaron said.

"Me too," Salem said.

"Excellent; I'll be right back with that," she said and walked away. Once she was gone, Lilly and her two companions sat down at the table. Lilly sat beside Salem, the brunette went for Aaron and the redhead went for Harry.

"I did not get a chance to introduce you all to my fellow singers," Lilly said. "Maggie, Peggy, this is Salem Dauer. He's a Sonarman! This is Aaron Shaffer. He's a Petty Officer! And this gentleman is Lieutenant Henry Christianson. He's a Dive Officer! Gentleman, this is Margret Tracy and Peggy Hanover."

"Please call me Maggie," Maggie, the brunette, said with a bright smile.

"That's so sweet of you to remember what we do," Salem smiled at Lilly.

"I have a good memory," she answered. "So, gentlemen, how long have all of you been in Fort Lauderdale?"

"Except for Aaron, we just got here," Harry said. "Petty Officer Dauer and I just got off our sea tours and had the pleasure to be stationed here in Fort Lauderdale for our Land Duty."

"I've been here since September," Aaron said.

"Well then, I'd say they're overdue for a proper welcome to the great state of Florida," Peggy, the redhead, smiled.

"Indeed I'd say so," Lilly said. "Tell me, gentlemen, when can you have a well-deserved day to yourselves?"

"Sunday," Salem, Aaron and Harry all said and the girls giggled.

"Well then," Lilly continued, "You're all in luck. My parents are going to be in Georgia all next week starting Friday. I'll have a big house with a pool all by my lonesome save for Peggy and Maggie's company. Perhaps you would like to join us?"

"Just give us the time and address and you can count on it," Aaron answered eagerly.

"That's wonderful," Lilly said and then grabbed a napkin. The waitress came back with their drinks and as she was putting them down, Lilly took the pen from her apron to write.

"You're inviting them to your party this weekend?" the waitress, Caroline, asked.

"Why of course," Lilly said and smiled at the men. "We need more company than what's been gathered so far wouldn't you agree?"

"Most certainly," Caroline smiled sweetly and looked right at Aaron. "I still need a date to Lilly's party if you would do me the honor."

"Now you hold on one moment," Maggie said, but it was completely playful. To Salem it felt a little staged, but it was getting some wind in Aaron's sales, so Salem didn't say anything. "Aaron here is already taking me to Lilly's party. Isn't that right, Aaron?"

"Well, shit, ladies, I don't want to be a cause for an argument," Aaron smiled.

"I know!" Peggy said. "Why don't you be both their dates?" she offered.

"Oh, that would be fun!" Caroline answered and Maggie agreed. Salem chuckled to himself. Yup, he thought. They're just flattering us.

"If that's the score, then I'd love to be both your date," Aaron answered.

"Does that mean I get you all to myself?" Harry asked Peggy. "Do I get to be your date?"

"I was hoping you'd ask me," Peggy smiled. "If you'd said you were going with another girl, it would break my heart."

"Oh, no, I don't want to do that," Harry said and the two of them laughed.

"So, Salem," Lilly said and got Salem's attention, "would you be my date for my party?"

"That's awful sweet of you, Lilly. I'd love to be your date," Salem smiled back and Lilly's smile was just as sweet.

"You have such a handsome smile, Officer," Lilly grinned. "I love a man with a winning smile."

"I get it from my dad," Salem answered.

"In that case, I'll bet your father is the handsomest man alive," Lilly said.

"I suppose he was," Salem said. "My brother looks like his twin pretty much or so most say."

"I'm sure he's still the handsomest man alive," Lilly said.

"I'm afraid my father died during the Liberation of Paris during the war," Salem said, getting slightly irritated with Lilly but making sure not to be mean. She didn't know better and when he saw the look of horror on her face, he knew she'd not meant offense.

"Oh…my God, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to-"

"It's alright," Salem reassured. "You had no way to know."

"Well, if it's worth anything, your father died a hero," she said.

"Thank you for saying," Salem said.

"Caroline?" Lilly said, getting the waitress's attention, "Officer Dauer's drinks are on me tonight."

"That's alright, Lilly, you don't have to," Salem said.

"No, please, I insist," Lilly said. "I owe you after putting my foot in my mouth."

"Well," Salem said and patted her knee, "I'll accept just this once."

She finally smiled again and the ladies stayed at their table for another hour before they finally left the bar. Lilly gave them the address and time to be at her house and promised she and the others looked forward to seeing them again. It was dark by the time they'd left but it wasn't yet approaching their curfew, so they had some more time to kill before they were expected back on base, so they went to the beach for a bit enjoying the sound of the ocean. The following day, Salem was finally able to write Natalie a letter enclosing all the paperwork she'd need for her hotel reservation and made the request to have that week off so he could spend it with Natalie while she was in Florida. Salem and the others didn't go to The Seagull's Nest again that week, but they kept their calendars marked with the address, date and time of Lilly's party. They'd agreed to meet Peggy, Maggie and Caroline outside The Seagull's Nest and then they'd all drive to Lilly's house together. When it was finally Sunday, Salem, Aaron and Harry were up bright and early gathering a change of clothes, wearing their swimsuits under their uniforms and got a hold of a jeep that one of the commanding officers let them burrow but under the strict condition that it was brought back spotless. They made the drive to The Seagull's Nest even if they could easily have walked and Maggie, Peggy and Caroline were outside waiting for them in little skirts and very light blouses carrying large bags that likely had a change of clothes.

"Good morning, ladies," Aaron said as the three of them got out of the car to meet them. "You weren't waiting long for us I hope."

"We've been waiting all week," Maggie teased and gently touched Aaron's nose with the tip of her finger. "Now let us get in that car and go to Lilly's house. You'll just love her pool! It's huge!"

"Large enough for a game of chicken?" Harry asked.

"If a pool isn't big enough for chicken, then what's the point?" Peggy joked and they all laughed as they got into the car. It was a snug fit and Caroline asked if she could sit in Salem's lap in the back seat. The drive was fast and they were at Lilly's house in less than ten minutes. When they got to the front door, Peggy opened the front door which wasn't locked and let them all in. "Lilly!" Peggy called.

"Oh, there you are!" Lilly said and came running to the door to greet everyone. She was already in a two piece bathing suit with little flowers all over the white fabric and her hair was even done up. "Welcome to my home," she said to Salem and the others, giving them all a kiss on the cheek as she went down to line. "Are you hungry? I have food laid out and ready. I was about to bring it outside."

"We'll get in our suits and meet you outside," Aaron said.

"Alright," Lilly said.

"We'll meet you outside, gentleman," Peggy said. They were already removing their clothes as they followed Lilly outside, revealing that they'd had their bathing suits on under their clothes.

"I don't think I've ever had so warm a welcome," Harry said.

"I bet you're all real happy I insisted we go to The Seagull's Nest now aren't you?" Aaron boasted as they walked to a room down the hall to get dressed. But just as they were about to enter the assumed room, they heard a loud banging noise, a splash and the women screaming at the top of their lungs. Dropping their things, they ran to the back of the house where they'd heard the sound. When they got outside, Lilly and the others were off to one corner huddled together but they were otherwise unharmed. What grabbed their attention was the enormous reptile in the pool.

"God damn it!" Aaron yelled.

"Is that an alligator?" Salem asked.

"Yeah, it's a fucking alligator," Aaron grumbled and, since the alligator was no longer moving and just sitting in the pool, he looked at the women. "You aren't hurt right?"

"No, we're alright," Peggy spoke up.

"It just scared us," Caroline said.

"How the hell did it get over the fence?" Harry asked.

"If an alligator wants in your pool, they'll get in your pool," Aaron said and rubbed his face. "Lilly, where's your phone? I'll call animal control."

"Closest one's on the wall in the kitchen next to the dining table," she answered.

"Alright, I'll be back," Aaron said and went back inside.

"How long will it take for animal control to get here?" Salem asked Lilly.

"They'll be here in about ten minutes," Lilly said. "They're pretty close by. It's getting the alligator out that might take a while."

"So a half hour or something?" Salem asked.

"Based on how big that thing is, I'd guess closer to an hour or two," Peggy said.

"Oh, no," Salem said. "Fuck that," he continued and started getting out of his uniform.

"Dauer, what the fuck are you doing?" Harry asked.

"I'm getting the lizard monster out of the pool," Salem said.

"What?!" all the girls and Harry screamed.

"Salem, don't be ridiculous. It'll kill you!" Lilly said.

"Your lack of faith in me really hurts my feelings," Salem teased. "So these things have a strong bite but can't open their mouths for shit, right? All I need to do is keep its mouth shut and the worst is under control."

"Salem, it might drown you!" Lilly yelled. Then Aaron came back outside.

"Animal control's on their way," Aaron said.

"Good," Salem said. "They can collect the beast once they're here. Lilly, do you have any rope?"

"No, I don't have rope!" Lilly said.

"Garden hose?" Salem asked.

"Dauer, you're not getting in that pool!" Harry said.

"What?" Aaron asked. "Are you honestly talking about getting in the pool? Salem, that thing will kill you!"

"Oh, relax," Salem said and searched the side of the house for the garden house. Once he found it, he got it off the side of the house and approached the pool.

"Dauer!" Harry said. "Stop!"

"I'm not waiting two hours for animal control to get this little bastard out of the pool," Salem said. The closer he got to the pool, he notified the alligator open its mouth. "You're an ambush predator? Good. That'll make luring you out easier."

"Salem!" Lilly screamed just before the alligator charged out of the pool towards Salem, but he side stepped, got onto the alligator's back and wrapped the garden hose around its snout as soon as he'd forced it shut by slamming his elbow onto the alligator's nose.

While he was getting the hose around its snout, he heard screaming and the alligator went under water. Salem held on tight as the alligator rotated over and over like a barrel trying to get him off, but he held on for dear life while also keeping the hose secure on its snout. The instant the alligator was no longer rotating, Salem made a swift motion to get the garden hose around the beast's neck twice and then rushed to get off. Once he was off, the alligator attempted to turn towards him but the area of the pool they were in was too narrow and the alligator hit its nose against the wall of the pool. Salem used that opening to get his head above water, take a gulp of breath into his lungs and then swam in the opposite direction from where the alligator was turning. He was finally able to get to the steps of the pool and grabbed onto the railing while still holding the hose leash with the alligator attached.

The screaming seemed to stop but only until the alligator turned again and made a lung towards Salem. Neighbors popped their heads over their fences to see what all the commotion was about and screamed too when they saw Salem running from the alligator on the makeshift leash towards the fence door. People screamed to call animal control while Lilly and her friends stayed in one corner while Aaron and Harry chased after Salem. He got the fence door swung open and had the alligator outside on the front lawn just as police and animal control were arriving.

"Sir, get off the alligator!" one man yelled and Salem did just that, releasing his hold on the garden hose. The animal control officers and police were able to get their own tools around the alligator's snout. They removed the hose only once they had their own restraints around the reptile and then tossed the hose back at Salem. The animal control crew took care of getting the alligator in the truck while one of the officers stepped forward towards Salem.

"Now, son," the officer said, "am I to believe that you wrangled that gator all by your lonesome?"

"Yes, sir," Salem answered. The officer looked at Aaron and Harry who nodded.

"Stupid son of a bitch wrestled that thing out of the water," Aaron said.

"Well fuck me; now what in the fuck made you think that was a good idea, son?"

"It was cutting into my relaxing time, sir," Salem answered with a completely straight face.

"You're what now?"

"My friends and I are station here and are members of the United States Navy and I don't mind telling you we are worked pretty hard from day to day. The young woman that lives here was kind enough to invite us and several of her friends over to play in her pool and I don't mind telling you that sounded like a well-deserved day off to me. It was explained to me that a gator that big could take hours to remove from the pool and, if I'm being blunt sir, I refuse to sit there staring at a lizard monster enjoying the pool instead of me." The officer seemed to try keeping a straight face but he was laughed in seconds.

"Well if that isn't the most ridiculous answer I've ever heard, I don't know what is," the officer laughed. "You said you're with the Navy?"

"Petty Officer First Class Salem Dauer, sir," Salem answered.

"Any specialties?"

"I'm a Sonarman sir," Salem answered.

"Should put you in the army with the ground troops. If you can wrangle a damned alligator all by yourself, you might be of better use wrestling the communists."

"Thank you, sir," Salem answered. After the officer finished chuckling, he took a harder look at Salem and his face changed a little.

"You're…..I'm sorry, I hope this doesn't offend, but you're not a negro or anything are you?"

"No, I'm Native American," Salem answered. "Why?"

"Well…" the officer started and then approached Salem so they were closer. "It's only fair to warn you: Mr. Tanner, Lilly's daddy, is a bit….well, he's not terribly open minded. Let's just put it that way. I highly doubt any of the neighbors got a real good look at you so worst case scenario Lilly will get in trouble for having people over without her daddy's permission, but don't make a habit of coming around here. If he finds you in his house there may be trouble."

"Thank you, Officer," Salem said. "I'll keep that in mind."

"Good," the officer said and finally smiled. "And hey, if the Navy winds up not working out for any reason, you've got a future in gator wrangling. And thank you for your service, son." Then the officer saluted Salem.

"I'll keep that in mind, sir," Salem smiled and saluted back to the officer before he finally left in his squad car. Once they were all gone, he was startled by Aaron wrapping an arm around Salem's neck playfully.

"You stupid asshole," Aaron said but he was laughing. "I've lived in Florida all my God damn life and I have NEVER seen anyone manhandle a gator like what I just saw in that pool!"

"That gator wasn't so tough once it couldn't bite," Salem said, perhaps boasting and undermining how much of a fight that alligator had put forward.

"Lilly!" Harry said but Lilly and her friends still appeared slightly shell shocked. "It's alright, girls. Salem saved the day, so let's eat, drink and play chicken." After a moment, Lilly finally nodded and they all went back to the yard towards the pool.

"On a serious note, I certainly hope Harry and I aren't left out on the cold because of this," Aaron said.

"You should have helped me," Salem shrugged and they all laughed again.

Since they were now able to use the pool, they got their drinks made up and started playing chicken just as Harry had been asking. Lilly was on Salem's shoulders, Maggie on Harry's shoulders and Peggy was on Aaron. Caroline acted as referee for the first round of the game and they were able to enjoy their day as initially planned. They played in the pool until it was getting dark and once it was, Lilly got a fire going in her father's fire pit so they could tell stories to each other while roasting marshmallows for s'mores. Lilly and her friends made sure Aaron, Harry and Salem were talking endlessly about their time in the Navy, specifically when any of them had been overseas. Salem let them see all his tattoos including his Welcome Aboard tattoo which he was relieved to see they'd found very funny and cute. They left after it was getting late and Lilly's friends needed to go home. Harry and Aaron were getting ready to leave with them as was Salem in order to get them dropped off.

"Officer Dauer," Lilly said as Salem was about to leave, "Do you need to be back by a certain time?"

"Midnight," Salem answered. "Why do you ask?"

"I was just wondering if you wanted to stay a little longer," Lilly asked with a smile.

"He's all yours Miss Lilly," Aaron spoke up for Salem. "If he's not back by Midnight, we'll cover for him. Just make sure he comes back in one piece."

"No more gator wrangling, Salem," Harry joked.

"Well now, if another gator gets in her pool, I can't just leave it there," Salem chuckled.

"Is that why you're keeping him, Lilly? You scared the gators will get you?" Aaron teased.

"I'm terrified," Lilly played along. "Please say you'll stay a little longer, Officer."

"Well, if it's a matter of your safety, I can't in good conscience leave now can I?" Salem smiled.

"We'll see you later, Salem," Aaron said and they all said their goodbyes, leaving Salem in Lilly's house alone with her.

"That was very brave of you," Lilly said. "Reprimanding that alligator all by yourself I mean."

"Like I told the policeman: it was disrupting my relaxing time."

Lilly giggled, "All our relaxing time, Officer."

"All the more reason," Salem said.

"Can I get you anything to drink?" Lilly asked.

"I've had too much already honestly," Salem said.

"Are you sure?" Lilly asked. "Otherwise, I was just going to put on an Elvis Presley record and ask you to dance with me."

"If all you want is to dance, Lilly, then I'm happy to accommodate," Salem smiled. Lilly returned the smile and went to the record player to put in her Elvis Presley record. Once the music filled the room, Lilly came back to Salem and they started dancing.

"So tell me about yourself, Officer," Lilly said. "What made you decide to join the Navy?"

"Truthfully, I felt like I wasn't going anywhere in life," Salem said. "All my uncles and my brother that served had been in the Army, but that just wasn't for me. I did my research and thought the Navy would be more suited for me. So far I was right to think so. What about you? Do you have any family members in the armed forces?"

"My Uncle fought in the Second World War," Lilly said. "He died in the line of fire."

"Did he come in through Europe or Africa?"

"Africa," she answered. "He made it to Italy but was killed."

"I'm sorry," Salem said. "Was that your father's or mother's brother?"

"My mother's," she said. "You said your father had fought right? Did anyone else in your family serve in the 2nd World War?"

"Yes," Salem said. "My Uncles Kevin, Kyle, Nathan, Embry and Peta and a cousin of mine, Travis."

"Oh wow."

"And my older brother served in the Korean War. He met his wife there."

"Your sister-in-law is Korean?"

"Yeah and thank goodness my brother found her. Our father's death hit him the hardest and he just wasn't himself anymore. When he met Eun Mi, she gave me my brother back and she takes good care of him. I couldn't have asked for a better sister-in-law. Even if she is pint-sized," Salem said, unable to resist teasing her.

"It sounds like your brother was very lucky," Lilly said. "And what about you? I know you said you aren't married or seeing anyone. Has there been anyone overseas that you've met?"

"Not in the way you're thinking," Salem said. "I confess: finding the love of my life isn't really my goal right now. I'm sure I'll find her someday and when I do, I'll love her unconditionally. Until then, I'm just a sailor traveling the world while serving his country."

"You don't think you'll meet the woman of your dreams here in Florida?"

"If I do, it'll be a surprise," Salem said, being careful how he answered. "Listen, Lilly," Salem started, figuring it was best to be honest right now, "You're a really sweet woman, really you are. But I'm not in the market for anything serious. Right now, I'm just out to have fun."

"I understand," Lilly said. "Trust me, all I want is fun too. Even if I fell madly in love with you, a can guarantee you my daddy would never let us get married."

"The officer said something to that effect about your dad," Salem chuckled. "He asked me if I'm black and I told him I'm Native American and he told me not to make a habit of coming here."

"Unless my parents are out of town of course," Lilly said.

"Well, you have my word Lilly that I'll not be asking you to marry me," Salem said.

"Just don't break my heart Officer," Lilly teased.

"I'll try not to, Miss Tanner," Salem joked back. "Seeing as we're being completely honest with one another," Salem continued and brought his face just a little closer to Lilly's, "I don't suppose you might accept my more carnal advances."

Lilly giggled and nodded, "Follow me, Officer." She stepped away just enough to take Salem's hand and led him with her up a flight of stairs up to her bedroom. By the time Salem finally left, he was rushing out the door so he could rush back to base before his midnight curfew. The next morning, he was awoken by someone's boot poking his face.

"How'd it go, Romeo?" Harry asked, the one that was poking him with his boot.

"Tis the nightingale; I sleep," Salem said and rolled over but was only met with yet another boot poking his face.

"Hate to break it to you, Dauer, but it's the Lark," Aaron chuckled. "Come on. How'd it go? Did you two go all the way? Was she Lilly white before you got your hands on her?"

"I'm not of authority to say whether I was the one to pluck her, but even if I'm not, the flower's as beautiful as ever," Salem said and finally sat up in his bunk.

"So you had fun?"

"Yes, I had fun," Salem smiled a little. "What about you two? Did either of you have fun?"

"We had to get a little crafty but yes, we did," Aaron chuckled. "And I don't mind telling you I got to have Caroline and Maggie all to myself. Harry only got Peggy."

"Oh the tragedy," Salem said sarcastically with a light chuckle. "So will either of you be seeing them again?"

"If we do, it'll be when we go to The Seagull's Nest. No one's buying a wedding ring or anything if that's what you're asking," Harry said.

"I would hope not," Salem chuckled.

"Attention!" came a booming voice from the commanding officer, so the three of them had to stop their conversation and get in line to start their day. Later that day while they were all in the mess hall, one of the recruits came to Salem's table with a box.

"Something from home?" Salem asked, a little surprised.

"I don't think so," the recruit said. "I was asked to bring this to you. It's from a Lilly Tanner I think."

"Oh?" Aaron asked and started to tease. "You must have made one hell of an impression on her, stud."

"Thanks," Salem said, taking the box from the recruit so he could leave.

"So what's in it?"

"Do I appear as Superman with x-ray vision?" Salem asked sarcastically before he started opening the box. Inside were a large collection of brownies that smelled chocolaty and delicious. Salem also noticed there were walnuts in the batter.

"She sent you brownies?" Harry asked.

"Lucky bastard," Aaron chuckled.

"Who has brownies?!" someone yelled, overhearing and suddenly Salem was surrounded by sailors begging for a brownie of their own. Salem managed to get one for himself before the rest of the room cleaned the box for him.

"I guess you better keep them hidden next time," Aaron joked once all the brownies were gone.

"I guess someone had better keep their mouth shut about what's in the box," Salem answered and took a bite of the one brownie he got. "Son of a bitch, these are good."

"You go on another date with her and you get more brownies," Harry said, agreeing they were good.

"I'm not going on another date with her just so you greedy assholes can steal more brownies from me."

"Salem, I will personally call her and schedule your next date if I need to," Harry said as he finished his brownie. He glanced at the box in vain and when no more brownies remained, he grumbled and muttered, "God damn it."

A few days later, Aaron and Harry decided they wanted another night out and Salem was happy to join them. After leaving the base, they made the walk to The Seagull's Nest and Harry reminded Salem he was expected to get more brownies out of Lilly. Salem just rolled his eyes with a laugh but otherwise said nothing. The host took them to a table in the din that was near the stage per their request and as they'd taken their seat, Lilly, Maggie and Peggy were already on stage singing. Lilly eventually noticed Salem and even waved demurely at him with her pretty smile. They were on stage for a few songs before leaving the stage and another act taking their place. Once they were off stage, the girls followed Lilly to their table taking their designated seats. They did not bother with introductions and instead just went right to conversing amongst themselves.

"Did you like the brownies I sent you?"

"The one I got to have," Salem smiled.

"I'm sorry?" Lilly said.

"It was quickly discovered that you'd sent me brownies. I managed to have one before the others stole the rest," Salem said. "You can count Harry and Aaron among the thieves."

"No!" Lilly said and then looked at the men in question. "Did you take his brownies?"

"What?" Aaron asked and then looked at Salem. "You told on us?"

"And feel no shame for it," Salem said.

"Are you free on Sunday? I can make you another batch and I'll bring them to you personally. I'll help you protect them."

"That's sweet of you, Lilly, but you don't have to do that," Salem said.

"I'll take those brownies if he's turning them down," Harry was quick to say.

"Oh no, I made those for Salem. No one else," Lilly said. "I'm so sorry."

"Really, Lilly, it's okay," Salem reassured. "Even if I only got to enjoy a fraction of it, I appreciate the gesture nonetheless." To further his point, Salem took Lilly's hand and planted a kiss to it. "So have your parents returned home?"

"They got back on Wednesday," Lilly said.

"What were they in Georgia for?"

"A wedding," Lilly answered. "My mom's friend's daughter got married."

"In other words: not an event you were terribly interested in?" Salem chuckled.

"Not in the least," Lilly giggled back. "I think I met her all of two times in my whole life."

"In that case, you should be ashamed of yourself not to attend such a close friend's wedding," Salem teased.

"Oh, stop," Lilly giggled. "I don't mind telling you got in a bit of trouble thanks to you."

"Me?"

"Yes, you," Lilly smiled. "Damn near all my neighbors saw you wrestle that alligator out of my dad's pool and they didn't hesitate to tell him all about it. He was so mad at me for having so many people over while he was away. The only reason he wasn't angrier is because he never found out you'd stayed late."

"Would you rather I'd left that thing in your pool?" Salem asked.

"No," Lilly said, "but I suppose if it happens again make sure you're a little more patient."

"Alright, fine," Salem said and patted her knee. "Regardless of the alligator, I had a lot of fun."

"Me too," Lilly said. "Are you sure you don't want me to make you brownies again? I'd meant those for you and I feel awful that you didn't get to keep them to yourself."

"Really, it's alright," Salem said. "But I'll tell you what: I'm getting all my work done really early tomorrow so I can go to the Tattoo shop. My appointment's at 1. Did you want to come with me? Keep me company?"

"I would love to," Lilly smiled. "Just to warn you, my shift here started at five tomorrow."

"I'm sure he'll be done by then," Salem said, "but if you need to leave, you're welcome to."

"So what are you getting?"

"I'd initially been planning to get my pinup, but given recent events, I had the idea to get something a little different. I told Andy, the tattoo artist, what happened and he told me, 'I've got just the thing,' and told me he'd let me see it when I got there for my appointment."

"So it's a surprise? That's exciting."

"I'm excited," Salem chuckled. "Although I still want my pinup."

"I like the one you've got now," she teased and poked his hip where his current pinup sat on the anchor, hidden by his clothes of course.

"I do too, but I want another one. I want one on my ribcage and I want it to be of a woman mixing cake batter."

"Why cake batter?"

"What's more comforting than cake?"

"Valid point," Lilly giggled. "Well, if that first pinup is Mr. Andy's work, then I can't wait to see what he does with your second one."

"Me either," Salem said.

"So where are you planning to get this tattoo?"

"Andy suggested my forearm," Salem said, lifting his left arm and pointing at the forearm of it. "I don't have anything here yet."

"Are you planning to keep going until you run out of room?"

"Maybe," Salem smiled. "Do you want to meet at the shop?"

"That sounds like a good idea," Lilly said. "Worst case scenario if daddy hears I went, I'll just tell him the truth and say I was there with a friend and didn't get anything."

"Your father sounds like quite the stickler," Salem chuckled.

"You don't know the half of it," Lilly said.

Salem and the others stayed at the bar for a few hours before finally leaving to return to base. The following day, Salem woke before the dawn with all the others and made a point to get all his work done as fast as possible but not so fast that anything was done wrong. His commanding officer knew he was getting a tattoo and had already approved for him to leave for the shop, but the catch was his curfew for that day was ten instead of midnight like he'd earned. Salem agreed to it for that day figuring he'd be back at back by then anyway. When he left and got to the shop, Lilly was out front waiting for him at 12:50 and the two of them hugged.

"You weren't waiting too long for me were you?"

"Not at all," Lilly said. "I'm relieved I'm here early honestly. I had a devil of a time finding this place."

"Yeah, I had to look really hard for this place," Salem said. "So did you want to get something?"

"Oh, no, no, goodness no," Lilly shook her head gently. "Getting my blood drawn for a physical takes all the courage I've got much less getting a tattoo. But I'll happily act as moral support."

"I appreciate it," Salem chuckled and guided her inside the shop with him where Andy was already waiting for him. They said their pleasantries before he led Salem with to his station so they could get started, beginning with showing Salem the sketch.

"Still can't believe you did this you stupid son of a bitch," Andy chuckled, showing Salem the sketch. "Normally I prefer photo realism, but for this little story, something a little bolder was needed."

The sketch was of an alligator that was wrapped up in a garden hose with its mouth wide open and jaws in full presentation and it's left eye in view looking to be in a fit of fury. It was not photo-realistic as Andy said; rather it was in the American Traditional style with a limited color pallet and the alligator was black outlined in yellow with red eyes. The garden hose was brown outlined with a thick black line. Given the story behind the tattoo, it was perfect.

"Holy shit, I love it," Salem said and chuckled.

"I had a feeling you would," Andy said. "I've got the stencil ready so all that's left is to get it on your skin and I can start."

"Do you mind if I keep that sketch actually?" Lilly asked suddenly and then looked at Salem. "If it's alright."

"She can have it," Andy agreed and handed it over to her. She accepted it with a smile and then returned her gaze to Salem. "Could I ask you to sign it?"

"Sure," Salem laughed and, with a pen Andy handed to him, signed the sketch with his full title and name. Then he insisted Andy sign it so he was credited as the artist. Once that was done, Andy finally got started on the tattoo while Lilly and Salem talked.

The tattoo was placed on the inside of Salem's forearm and as he always did, Andy put great effort into the detail and making the tattoo as close to perfect as possible. Sadly, Lilly had to leave for work before the tattoo was done, but she made Salem promise he would show it to her once it was done and had a chance to heal. Once she was gone, Andy glanced in her direction briefly but his attention returned to the finishing touches he was making to the tattoo.

"She seems like a nice girl," Andy said.

"She is," Salem said.

"Is it serious?"

"No," Salem said and gently shook his head. "I'm not looking for a serious relationship and she wouldn't be allowed to be with me even if I was the way I hear it."

"Ah, I see," Andy said. "Good. When you're in the Navy and out to sea all the time isn't when you want to get settled down. A man can always get married a little later in life especially if it means ensuring his future wife lives comfortably."

"You're not married are you?"

"Divorced," Andy said. "We weren't getting along and she found herself another man so I popped her in the nose in front of witnesses so she could claim I'm guilty of cruelty and we got divorced."

"That was…nice of you I guess," Salem said, unsure how to answer.

"Nice my ass," Andy said. "Bitch is lucky I was ready for it to be over by any means necessary otherwise I'd claim she chased me with scissors and tried to kill me or something. Said her to the damned loony bin. That would have made me happy, but no, she has to have a 'better life than I was giving her'."

"Sorry, I shouldn't have brought it up."

"Nah, it's fine. It's not your fault I married a bitch," Andy chuckled.

"You seeing anyone else?"

"Nope," Andy said. "I learned my lesson the first time. You? You're still young. You haven't been burned. Enjoy it while it lasts but be discerning in who you get yourself involved with. You hear me boy?"

"Yes sir," Salem smiled. Another thirty minutes later, Andy finally finished the tattoo and Salem stared at it for tens of minutes just admiring it. "This is amazing Andy."

"Don't get used to getting American Traditional out of me," Andy chuckled. "This shit is not my forte, but given that's the case, I'm pretty damned proud of it myself."

"Believe me so am I," Salem said. "Now, about the pinup that I'd been wanting to get."

"Yes," Andy said, "If money isn't a concerned, I can get you penciled in for it, but you'll want to allow me at least 8 hours to work on it."

"So beg my superiors for another half day and let you work into the night?"

"Damn straight," Andy chuckled. "Of course, if we need to do it in multiple appointments that's fine too. In fact, that might be better."

"I don't suppose you have a sketch for me do you?"

"Not yet," Andy said. "I'd been working on it and then you told me about your little Tarzan moment and I shifted gears near immediately."

"I'll forgive it," Salem laughed. "I should give myself a chance to collect a little more money for it, so let's take a two month break before I get the pinup. So long as I get it done before my mom comes to visit."

"Oh, relax, kid. Moms are prone to be disapproving of bodily artwork, but you're a grown man and you can do what you want God Damn it."

"Damn straight I am," Salem smiled.

Andy reviewed the healing and aftercare instructions for the tattoo before Salem paid for the tattoo and left the shop setting his appointment for his next tattoo to be in two months' time. He barely managed to make it back to the base before his curfew and the oversight did not go unnoticed by his commanding officer Captain Lake who was walking down the hallway just as Salem came through the door.

"Dauer!" Captain Lake barked, "Attention!" Salem did as ordered and faced the man standing to attention eyes forward, back straight and one hand at his side and another coming to his head in a salute. Captain Lake approached appearing completely serious, but he was smiling by the time he was standing before Salem. "Made it back by the skin of your teeth I see," he said.

"Good craftsmanship takes time, sir," Salem answered.

"At ease, sailor," Captain Lake said and Salem relaxed. "So do I get to see it?"

"I thought you'd never ask," Salem said and showed off the alligator.

"You stupid fuck," Captain Lake chuckled, remembering the story. "You haven't written your mother about this story I hope. The way you talk of her, the poor thing worries enough about you without you making it worse."

"I thought I'd save it for when she visits," Salem said. "Maybe I'll have more stories to tell by then."

"Oh no, you're done for now," Captain Lake laughed and patted Salem's back and then guided Salem to turn so they could walk down the hall together. "So when's the next one being plastered on?"

"Not for another 2 months," Salem said. "I want to save up for my next one. This time I am getting that pinup."

"That's assuming you don't do anything else exciting in the meantime. If the Soviets try to invade, I'll make sure we sick you on them. They won't stand a chance."

"You flatter me, Captain," Salem laughed.

"Also, did you get more brownies?"

"Damn it, I already told you guys I'm not making Lilly make me more brownies just for you to steal them from me again," Salem said.

"Consider it a Captain's order," Captain Lake joked.

"You go on a date with her then," Salem chuckled.

"There's the central issue that I'm already married, kid. You, on the other hand, are decidedly not."

"Christ almighty, fine. I'll get more brownies," Salem sighed.

"There's a good man," Captain Lake chuckled. "Now get your ass to bed. It's late."

"Yes, Captain," Salem said and they parted ways so Salem could return to the bunks to get some sleep but making sure he showed off the new tattoo to his comrades first.

Back in Washington, Eun Mi was growing every day. Only three months into her pregnancy, she already had a harder time moving around than was normal for her and kept her ghost hands on the ground at all times to ensure she was balanced. Despite all that, she was consumed with ensuring the house was prepared to host Yon and Tae Woon when they arrived. It was looking as though she'd not be able to go with JJ when he picked them up, though most likely by his insistence. By the time it was May and she was just over halfway through her pregnancy, JJ insisted she not go up or down stairs unless he was able to act as a spotter for her and he doted on her hand and foot. For all the times JJ would annoy her with insisting that she do as little as possible, he always made up for the frustration with his attentiveness. June finally came and it was the day before JJ would be driving to the city to pick up Yon and Tae Woon, the two of them were in bed, the boys already put to bed, and JJ was rubbing her feet.

"The boys seem excited for Yon and Tae Woon to visit," JJ said, remembering how Jae Sun and Mae Sun had spoken of nothing else all day.

"As am I," Eun Mi sighed, or moaned more appropriately when JJ rubbed a spot that she'd especially needed relief too near her toes.

"How's the baby doing?"

"The baby's just fine," Eun Mi said, nearly half asleep. She used a phantom hand to take a hold of JJ's left hand so she could bring it to her belly for him to feel. Usually the baby was most active in the morning, but sometimes the baby would kick during a dream. At least Eun Mi liked to imagine it was because the baby was having a dream. When JJ's hand was on her belly, the baby kicked ever so gently.

"There you are," JJ said to Eun Mi's belly and rubbed affectionately.

"Jae Sun and Mae Sun are frustrated with the baby. They complain the baby doesn't kick when they touch my belly."

"They're being too rough," JJ said. "I can tell you that right now."

"I can attest that's correct," Eun Mi smiled faintly. "When is your mother going to Florida again?"

"July," Salem said. "She'll only be there a week, so she'll be back before the baby's due. We've got until September."

"At latest," Eun Mi said. "I hope the baby's born in August. I'm already at my wits end with being pregnant for now."

JJ smiled, "I'll bet you are." Eun Mi smiled, again faintly, and then reached her visible arms out to him.

"Lay by me," she said. JJ did as she asked and took her into his arms as he laid in bed with her. Moments later, she was sound asleep. JJ chuckled under his breath when he realized it, reached for the lamp to turn off the light, and they didn't wake up until Eun Mi felt a tiny pair of hands gently nudging her.

"Eomma," the little voice came. It was Mae Sun. Eun Mi opened her eyes to see the boy in bed with her thanks to Jae Sun's assistance eager for their breakfast.

"Don't wake your mother like that, Mae Sun," JJ grumbled and sat up in bed.

"But we're hungry," Jae Sun said.

"You're always hungry," JJ said and ruffled the boy's hair. "Why don't we check to see if grandma is up and can make you breakfast."

"I can make breakfast," Eun Mi said, but barely awake.

"No, Eun Mi, you sleep," JJ said. "You sound like you could use a few more hours." Since he was on the bed, Mae Sun started patting Eun Mi's belly, perhaps a little rougher than he should, trying to get the baby to kick.

"Mae Sun," Eun Mi said in a tone that, even through her sleep, was firm, "나를 때리지 마라," (naleul ttaeliji mala/ Don't hit me). Eun Mi's firm tone did the trick and Mae Sun took his hands away.

"Come on, you two. Let's see if we can bug grandma," JJ said and got out of bed, got dressed and then saw to the boys getting dressed so he could take them to Natalie's and Suerro's house so Eun Mi could rest. As it turned out, she was desperately in need of it. She went right back to sleep and when she woke up, there was humming in the room. She opened her eyes and saw Yon sitting on the other side of the bed with Mae Sun taking a nap in her arms and Jae Sun napping on the bed.

"Oh, good, you're awake," Yon smiled.

"Yon," Eun Mi smiled and finally sat up. "When did you arrive? Why didn't you wake me?"

"We just got here," Yon said. "JJ said he didn't want to wake you and wanted to let you sleep. By the looks of you, I can't blame him."

"I've grown used to how my pregnancies progress," Eun Mi said. "And thank you for getting the boys down for a nap. Where are JJ and Tae Woon?"

"They're sitting outside drinking coffee," Yon said. Then she gently adjusted Mae Sun so she could reach over to touch Eun Mi's belly, knowing already that she had permission to do so. "How fairs my latest grandchild?"

"Strong, active and healthy. Just like his or her brothers," Eun Mi smiled.

"Excellent," Yon said but she didn't feel a kick. "It must be the baby's naptime too."

"The baby's most active in the morning," Eun Mi said. "Sometimes the baby kicks at night but only for JJ."

"That's very sweet," Yon said. "So when do you suppose you can come to us in Korea?"

"I don't know yet," Eun Mi said. "JJ's been worrying himself sick over Hailey."

"How is Hailey doing?"

"He seems like he's still in good health from what I can tell," Eun Mi said. "He's crabby, but that's just in his nature."

"Yes, so I gather," Yon giggled. When she did, Mae Sun squirmed a little as though he'd woken up, but he didn't open his eyes and kept snuggling in Yon's arms. "Good. It took forever to get them down for a nap. I don't want to wake them." Yon smiled down at the boys and them petted Jae Sun's head. "I hope you won't be mad, but I promised them they could have beet candy after they got up from their nap."

"I'll permit it this time," Eun Mi smiled.

"So when are you due again?"

"August. September at latest."

"Still in the summer more or less, so still a good time to have a baby," Yon said. "I wish we could stay for the baby's birth. You'll send pictures of course."

"Of course I will," Eun Mi smiled. "It's my hope that if Hailey remains in good health we'll be able to come to Korea for a visit. I don't imagine JJ will stay long."

"So long as your visit is prolonged," Yon said.

The boys were asleep for another hour but when they woke, Jae Sun reminded Yon that she'd promised candy and Eun Mi relented but reiterated that it was just this once. After Jae Sun and Mae Sun got their candy, they went outside to play and Yon helped Eun Mi out to the patio for some fresh air.

"How are you feeling?" JJ asked Eun Mi when Yon helped get her seated at JJ's side.

"Much better," Eun Mi said.

"Good," JJ answered and kissed Eun Mi's cheek. Tae Woon voiced his pleasantries and went around to Eun Mi to give her a hug before the four of them put all their attention on the boys as they played.

Eventually, Blu Jae came to the house to say hello to Yon and Tae Woon and then agreed to keep an eye on Mae Sun and Jae Sun so JJ and the others could better catch up. Up in Seattle, Embry had recently bought another fixer upper and was focusing on getting that made up for re-sale. Insisting upon it, since it was Sunday, Heather and the family came to the house to check on Embry's progress. Heather let herself out of Kevin's car before anyone and went right to the house letting herself in. She searched through the first floor of the house until she could Embry. The top half of his body was hidden under the sink getting the newest model he'd been able to find installed.

"Embry!" Heather said and hopped on Embry to get his attention, not that she'd needed to put forward much effort.

"Checking on your investment?" Embry asked teasingly but keeping his attention on the sink.

"Yes, sir," Heather said. "Ten dollars is a lot of money!"

"That's right, it is," Embry chuckled. "I promise you'll get that back plus ten percent. Just as we agreed."

"How's the plumbing coming along, Embry?" Kevin asked once he'd made it to the kitchen.

"A living nightmare. Thanks for asking," Embry said and finally came out from under the sink. "I knew it would be one hell of an undertaking getting all the plumbing in this house fixed, but this is horseshit."

"Language, Embry," Amber scolded.

"Do you want me to help?" Heather offered.

"While I appreciate the offer, Heather Bear, I don't know if you have the required know-how to help me with this part of the project," Embry said.

"How about I go home and change and I'll help with what I can?" Kevin offered.

"Sure," Embry said. "I need out from under that sink anyway, so let's move on to that porch. I got the foundation laid, but I haven't touched it since. I've been too occupied with the plumbing."

"Can I help?" Levi offered eagerly while Amber was holding his tiny hand.

"I'm sure we can find something for you to do," Embry chuckled.

"We'll go home and change and we'll be right back," Kevin said and they left to change and returned to the house twenty minutes later ready to help Embry with whatever he needed.

With Kevin's help, the porch was finished by that afternoon, but once it was done, Embry's thoughts returned to needing to fix the plumbing, so he got back to work on that. It was the middle of the night when it was done, but Embry finally got the plumbing completely up to standards and, just to test it, took a shower in the house and groaned with satisfaction when the hot water proved to be working like a dream. The house Embry was working on was just up the road from Heather's school, so that Monday, Heather walked from school to Embry's project house. Thankfully, the only job Embry had that day had been in the morning, so he was at the house when she arrived. Once again, she let herself into the house and eventually found Embry in one of the back rooms tearing up the carpet which was to be replaced with hardwood.

"Heather? What are you doing here? You should be in school."

"School just let out, silly," Heather giggled and dropped her backpack before coming to Embry's side to help pull up the carpet even if he was managing already.

"Now, Heather Bear, as much as I you helping me, you should get your homework done first. And don't tell me you don't have any. Last you told me that, your dad called me mad at me because Amber got a call from your teacher tattling on you."

"I forgot to do my homework that day; that's all," Heather said and then they got the carpet off the floor with one more good tug.

"'That's all' she says," Embry teased. "Well, now that I've got that travesty of a rug off the floor, how about I help you with your homework."

"But Embry," Heather pleaded.

"No 'buts' Heather," Embry said. "You get situated and I'll call your mother and let her know you're with me."

"Okay," Heather finally relented and went to the living room that was sparsely furnished with a small table while Embry called the Candle Shop to notify Amber Heather was with him. She asked him to call the house so he could notify Rosalie who was looking after Levi that he had Heather with him. Once he'd placed that call, he was finally able to return his attention to Heather who'd already started her homework.

"So what are you working on?" Embry asked.

"A reading assignment," Heather said. "I'm almost done."

"You're smart like your dad," Embry smiled and sat beside her. "I'm on the phone five minutes and you're already almost done with your homework."

"Just my reading," Heather said. "I still have my math and science homework. Are you good at science?"

"Not in the least," Embry said. "It's been so many years that I'm not likely to be of much help."

"It's okay," Heather said. "Daddy's not good at science either. He helps me with my math homework, though."

"I can do math," Embry reassured.

Once Heather was done with her English homework, they moved on to her math homework that was indeed basic enough that Embry was able to help her without difficulty. When they moved on to her science homework that too was basic enough that Embry was able to help her without issue. Only once her homework was done did they return to getting more work done to the house. Embry carried the torn up carpet outside so it would be taken out with all the other trash and they cleaned up the floor so it would be prepared to have the hardwood put down. They didn't get very far before Kevin let himself into the house to come pick up Heather and bring her home.

"How goes the renovations?" Kevin asked. "I noticed you got rid of that carpet you were going on about."

"The new owners would thank me," Embry chuckled. "Especially once they see the hardwood that'll be taking its place."

"Daddy, can I come back after school tomorrow to help with the hardwood?" Heather asked.

"Oh, no Heather Bear," Embry spoke up. "Installing hardwood is a very hard and very loud process. I'll take care of it. You can help me paint the room though. In fact, we'll get that done first and then we'll put down the hardwood."

"Shouldn't you do it that way anyway?" Kevin asked.

"Either works fine. You just need to keep the floor clean if you aren't covering it up later," Embry said.

"Well, Amber's already back home and she's started making dinner. You're welcome to come over if you want. I'll bet you're starving."

"I'll not turn down a free dinner," Embry said. "So what's Amber making?"

"We're having beef stew tonight," Kevin said.

"Good. I need something hardy," Embry said. "I'll take a shower and I'll be right over."

"You got the hot water working?"

"Took long enough," Embry chuckled. "For all the work I'm putting into this place, I'll bet I can get more for it than what your house is worth."

"I don't doubt it," Kevin said. "Go and grab your things Heather and we'll go back home."

"Okay," Heather said and went to get her backpack.

"She finish her homework this time?" Kevin asked.

"Don't worry, I made sure of it," Embry nodded. "Anyway, I'll shower and be right over."

"We'll see you then," Kevin said and left the back room just as Heather was approaching the hallway with her backpack. Kevin bent down to pick Heather up and carried her with out of the house. Heather waved at Embry saying she'd see him at dinner and Embry waved back.

Once Embry washed up and was in a fresh pair of clothes, he walked from the house he was fixing to Amber's and Kevin's house. Anna and Levi Sr. were at the house sitting in the living room with Heather and Levi Jr. keeping an eye on them while Amber was watching the stew and Kevin was 'helping'. Embry joined Levi and Ann in the living room with the kids leaving Kevin and Amber alone in the kitchen. They weren't being indecent, but they looked as though they were having a moment.

"Do you really have to go to New York?" Amber asked Kevin, not realizing Embry had even entered the house.

"I'm afraid so," Kevin said. "Hopefully, my client won't be in court over this too long and I can come home within two months at most, but we'll see. Prosecution has a pretty good case staking up on him."

"Will you be here for our Anniversary?"

"If I can't be home by then, you can come to New York," Kevin smiled. "The 18th is a Saturday this year if I remember correctly. Heather and Levi can come and we'll have a nice Birthday for Levi in the morning, then Embry can look after the kids for the day while you and I have some time alone to celebrate our Anniversary."

"Not California for our honeymoon?" Amber asked teasingly and smiled.

"We do that most years," Kevin said and leaned down to kiss Amber's cheek. "This year, we can take a walk through Central Park together, just you and me, when it's late at night. Maybe we'll be lucky and a band will be there and we can make them play for us or we can go to a movie together."

"What movie?" Amber asked.

"I don't give a shit," Kevin admitted and Amber fought a small laugh. "We'd be in the back and we wouldn't be watching it anyway."

"Kevin, that's not appropriate behavior for grown adults," Amber said through her smile.

"Only if we get caught," Kevin chuckled. "Of course, we could always do something else. We can take in the sites of the City, go dancing, walk along the coast of Manhattan; we can even get ourselves a hotel room and have no one bother us until we return home. Whatever you want."

"We'll take Levi on a tour of the city for his birthday," Amber said. "For our anniversary, I want to relax. Just you and me."

"Consider it done," Kevin said and kissed her neck but keeping it tame.

"You two could ask me if I'm available to babysit before assuming, you know," Embry said from behind them, making them turn to face him.

"You are the preferred option, but we can always find a nanny for the day if need be," Kevin said.

"I'll do it as a kindness," Embry chuckled. "So who's head are you saving from the chopping block this time?"

"I'm not at liberty to say I'm afraid," Kevin said. "He's keeping his case as tight lipped as possible and I'm obligated to agree to it. Besides, it's nothing terribly exciting. It's a business related lawsuit and while this man's putting forth one hell of a fight, it's not over anything ground breaking."

"So just money?" Embry asked.

"I get a quarter of it," Kevin smiled.

"Alright," Embry said, "I'll look after the kids while you two celebrate your 9 year."

"We appreciate it, Embry."

"You'd better," Embry chuckled. "So when's dinner ready?"

"It's still thickening, but it should be ready in another ten minutes," Amber said.

"Alright, I'll stave off the hungry rugrats until then," Embry said and returned to the living room leaving Kevin and Amber alone again.

"I'll reach out to Alphonse and see if he has any hotel recommendations for the night," Kevin said. "Will you and the children stay with me at least a week?"

"Just because I love you, I'll talk to mom and make it two weeks," Amber smiled and after a brief laugh the two of them shared a kiss.

At the end of May, Kevin left for New York promising he'd call as soon as he made it to the apartment and that he'd get back to Amber about their plans for their anniversary as well as any plans towards Levi's birthday. Once he made it to New York, he got one day to be at home, call Amber, tell her he was in New York and alright before he had to delve into the case he'd been given. He was welcomed at the Law firm and Alphonse made a point to come to Kevin's office to visit bringing brandy and two glasses with him so they could catch up and talk. They exchanged stories of what they'd been up to, Kevin talked about his kids, Alphonse bragged about Harold Jr. and how well he was doing in school – granted Kevin already knew courtesy of Harold Sr. but Kevin wasn't about to rob Alphonse of his bragging time – Kevin relayed his plans for Levi's birthday and his and Amber's anniversary and so on. It was a well needed distraction before the start of the day and July just couldn't come soon enough.

The day before their plans, on the 17th of July, Amber and the children got on a plane and got to New York by that evening with Kevin ensuring he was at the airport to pick them up, even if it meant requesting of the judge to call an early recess. Embry would fly in on his own and be in New York before midnight, so the four of them returned to the apartment together so Amber and the children could get settled in. Embry made it by eleven but kept the reunion brief before falling asleep on the couch. The children were asleep already anyway and Kevin and Amber were exhausted, eager to go to bed.

"Mommy!" Levi's little voice cheered bright and early as he ran to Amber's and Kevin's room letting himself in and crawling into bed with them. "It's my birthday!" Levi said.

"No it's not," Kevin teased. "Your birthday was last year."

"It's my birthday this year," Levi said.

"Well, last year or this year, Levi. Pick one," Kevin joked.

"This year!" Levi said and Kevin was already laughing while the boy crawled over to snuggle up to Kevin and Amber.

"That's good to hear because we have quite the day planned out for you," Kevin said.

"Really?!" Levi said and even tugged on Kevin's arm eager to start the day.

"Yes, really, but there's a catch," Kevin said.

"What?"

"You need to let mommy and daddy sleep at least until eight," Kevin said.

"It's nine," Levin said and glanced at the clock.

"You need to let mommy and daddy sleep at least until ten," Kevin corrected and Amber was forcing herself not to laugh while her eyes remained closed.

"No, no, no, Levi, you're approaching this all wrong," Embry called from the hallway and approached Kevin and Amber's bedroom then leaned against the doorframe. "If you want to get a soldier out of bed, you need to yell at him."

"But if I yell at daddy, I'll get in trouble," Levi answered innocently.

"Damn straight you will," Kevin mumbled.

"That's what I'm here for, Levi," Embry said and then to Kevin he began to yell, "Out of bed, your highness! You're not here to lay round helping the daisies grow!"

"You're addressing a superior officer, Corporal," Kevin played along, not getting out of bed. "See, Levi, Embry retired as a Corporal and I retired as a Lieutenant."

"What's above a Lieutenant?" Levi asked Embry.

"A Captain," Embry asked.

"Uncle Embry's a Captain now so you have to listen," Levi said to Kevin and he and Embry burst into laughter.

"Well shit, where were you when I was due for a promotion?" Embry joked and picked up Levi from the bed. "I'll get some coffee ready and I expect your ass out of bed by 0930 hours, Lieutenant."

"Stand down Tatter," Kevin poked fun.

"Now you just went and made me mad," Embry chuckled and walked out of the room with Levi in his arms. The commotion woke Heather who followed Embry into the kitchen where he proceeded to make coffee.

"Did you want to get in the shower?" Kevin asked Amber.

"I'd like to," Amber said.

"Let's get it done together," Kevin said, not intending the suggestion to be sexual, but it wound up being that way once they were in the shower together. Embry kept Levi and Heather occupied until Kevin came to the kitchen for his coffee while Amber stayed in their room to do her hair before getting dressed.

"Dad, dad, what are we doing today?" Levi asked, bouncing up and down in his chair.

"First we're all going to a diner for brunch," Kevin said. "Let me finish my coffee and I'll help you get dressed. Heather, wear something you'd wear to the Synagogue, okay?"

"Okay," Heather nodded and left the kitchen to run to her room and get dressed.

"Going somewhere fancy are we?" Embry asked.

"Alphonse is treating, so of course it is," Kevin smiled. "He should be here by 10:30."

"And you wanted to sleep in," Embry chuckled. "If we have to dress nice, can I burrow one of your suits?"

"Sure," Kevin said.

Embry retreated to Kevin's and Amber's bedroom and picked out one of the suits he liked and closing the door on the closet so Amber wouldn't have to watch him get changed. By the time he was dressed, Amber had her hair done up the way she wanted and she had to force Embry from the closet so she could get dressed. Right at 10:30, Alphonse knocked on the door and they all left together to go to the place he'd picked out for them to have brunch. Alphonse and Kevin kept talk of the office at a minimum and focused more so on Embry's latest housing project that, to Kevin's relief, had Alphonse deeply interested rather than passively.

"So you purchase homes of inferior quality, make improvements keeping costs for said improvements as low as possible and put the house back up for sale at an inflated price?"

"For its new value," Embry said. "Saying 'inflated price' implies it's not worth what's being charged."

"Indeed," Alphonse said. "How does one come to such a business venture?"

"My lawyer made the suggestion," Embry joked and Kevin laughed a little.

"He's on our client list?" Alphonse looked at Kevin.

"I may have promised him at one point or another that if he ever killed a man I would defend him in a court of law," Kevin said.

"When and why in God's name did you make such a promise?"

"It was at my wedding when we were playing that question game, remember?"

"Ah, yes, that," Alphonse said and smiled a little. "Even when it's just a game you're a man of your word. I'll give you that. So, Embry, given you've been doing this house flipping venture for some time, I'm left to assume it's been quite profitable?"

"It has as a matter of fact," Embry said. "Brokers have started keeping my business card in their offices for clients that recently bought a house and wants something remodeled and word of mouth has done wonders too."

"That's excellent news," Alphonse said.

"I even have an investor," Embry said and then looked at Heather, "Isn't that right, Heather?"

"And I get everything back plus 10%," Heather smiled.

"Only 10%? Heather, you need to sit Embry down and renegotiate. A financial investment should require better yield then a measly 10%."

"You think so?"

"I know so," Alphonse said and looked at Embry. "In fact, let's negotiate that more acceptable sum now. Starting with 40%."

"40%? You're busting my balls, Alphonse."

"Her money back plus an additional 40% shouldn't be unreasonable given the success you've been seeing," Alphonse said.

"How about 15%?"

"Now you're busting my balls, Embry," Heather said only to suffer a pinch from Amber.

"Don't speak that way, young lady," Amber scolded.

"How about 35%?" Heather continued, mostly ignoring Amber.

"20%," Embry said.

"35," Heather said.

"Okay, 25," Embry answered but Heather shook her head.

"I want 35%," Heather said.

"Jesus, Heather, you're milking me dry, kid. At least agree to 30%."

Heather shook her head, "No. 35%. Or I will have to find an alternate investment."

"Hit him where it hurts, Heather," Alphonse encouraged. Embry was smiling at her though and extended his hand.

"You've got me cornered. Alright, your money plus 35% starting with the sale of my current housing project. So that'll bring you to a return of $13.50."

"Just $13.50?" Alphonse gawked. "Heather, as your lawyer, I must protest."

"She invested $10 in this latest project so she's seeing a profit," Embry said. "Next time she can invest the $13.50 she got. So Heather, tell me: If next you invest with me you put in $13.50, what would be your return in investment?" Heather took a moment to think and then grabbed a napkin and one of the crayons Levi had been given to color with and did the math.

"Am I allowed to round up?" Heather asked.

"Yes, you can round up," Embry smiled.

"My return would be $18.23," Heather said.

"And then if you invested that much in the project after that, what would be your return?"

Heather did the math again and then answered, "$24.61."

"See, Alphonse?" Embry said. "That's shaping up to be quite a return on her investment wouldn't you say?"

"That's assuming she chooses to invest in multiple projects, but given your success thus far, I suppose it's a safe investment at least," Alphonse said and sipped his mimosa.

"Glad we got your lawyer's stamp of approval," Embry joked and made Heather giggle.

After brunch, they all went to a museum together and Levi had a great time, particularly because he was allowed to run ahead of the group and view the artwork on his own, but Embry made sure he was always close so the boy didn't get too far away. After the museum, Alphonse returned home while the rest of them went to Central Park together. Heather and Levi played together as the adults watched ensuring they didn't get into any trouble. They happened upon a vendor selling large pretzels so Kevin bought everyone, except Amber, a pretzel when Heather asked.

"Embry, can you take Heather and Levi back to the apartment? Amber and I are going to start our night," Kevin said when the sun was starting to come down.

"Yeah, I'll take care of them. You'll be gone until tomorrow right?"

"Yeah, we'll be back in the morning," Kevin said.

"I'll see you tomorrow then," Embry said and went ahead to catch up to Heather and Levi while Kevin and Amber took a different trail so they'd be leaving the park. They walked together hand in hand and strolled leisurely down the trail.

"It's so quiet," Kevin said.

"Being absent two children does tend to lower the volume a little," Amber joked. "So do you think you'll be able to come home soon?"

"I'll be home before the end of July," Kevin promised. "I'll be resting my case soon and I know prosecution will do the same. All that'll be left is for the judge to deliver the verdict."

"Your client isn't liable to go to jail if you lose is he?"

"No, he'd just lose a lot of money," Kevin said. "Depending on the client, those two outcomes are one it the same, but some clients are prone to the melodramatic."

"I would say so," Amber said and squeezed Kevin's hand. "Despite the silliness of the situation, I was very pleased to see how well Heather was able to calculate on her investment."

"That's my girl," Kevin smiled proudly.

"Not an artistic bone in that girl's body, but you'll make a business woman of her to be sure," Amber smiled.

"Damn straight I will," Kevin answered confidently. "Seeing as Levi's not allowed to become a lawyer according to your mother, should we nudge him in the same direction?"

"I believe my mother specifically instructed him to become an accountant like his grandpa," Amber said.

"That's boring," Kevin poked fun. "Of course, your dad's been putting that boy through math drills like that's the plan."

"Kevin, you must realize my father is merely cultivating an especially useful skill in our son."

"I know," Kevin smiled and leaned down to give Amber a kiss. "Turning our boy into a regular egghead to be sure."

"If he manages to put a woman to sleep on their first date, we'll know we've done right," Amber joked.

"We can only hope he's fortunate enough to find a woman as kind and patient as his grandmother that's willing to put up with such boredom," Kevin poked fun. "In all fairness, though, your father's a lot of fun once he's had a few beers put in him."

"Yes, I'm aware," Amber said in a curt tone but she was fighting a laugh. Kevin lifted Amber's hand to his lips and pressed a kiss to the back of her hand.

"Aren't you happy you married a Lawyer?"

"I don't know, Kevin. Being a lawyer has its fair share of dullness. Especially when you start using legal terms I don't remember or aren't familiar with."

"When I start speaking Latin you mean?" Kevin joked.

"Yes, exactly," Amber smiled. "So where are we going?"

"Somewhere I think you'll like," Kevin said. "I'd thought we should go to a hotel, but Alphonse's exact words were to accuse me of being 'cheap'. I took that insult to heart and decided to get creative."

"Is that so?" Amber asked. "So where are we going instead?"

"It's a surprise," Kevin answered. "It's a little something that I used to do when I was a kid and I recall promising you that I'd take you on the excursion."

Not relaying any more information than that, the two of them continued to walk through the park together and continued through the city until they reached a port. Amber was a little confused but didn't ask any questions as they walked down the docks to a small yacht.

"We're going sailing?" Amber asked.

"We're going whale watching," Kevin smiled. "I rented the boat for the evening."

"Do you know how to operate a boat?" Amber asked.

"I got the owner to teach me," Kevin smiled. "I know enough to get us out to the ocean until we find a pod of whales we can watch. I'm told we might be able to see Orca whales traveling."

Amber didn't say anything but smiled as they got onto the yacht together. Kevin pulled keys from his pocket that she'd not realized he had and started working on getting the boat ready to leave.

"I wish I'd known we were doing something like this. I would have brought a bathing suit."

"I took care of it," Kevin smiled. "There's a bed down below."

"We'll be sleeping out on the water?"

"If you'd like," Kevin smiled. "The boat's ours until noon tomorrow."

Surprised, Amber looked around until she found a door that led below deck and as Kevin said, there was a comfortable looking bed. On the bed was a lilac bathing suit but what surprised her to see was their wedding album, there were flowers on the bed that were a replica of her wedding bouquet and there was a tiny cupcake on a table beside an ice bucket that held a bottle of sparkling wine. Amber couldn't fight the blush that went to her cheeks as she undressed and got into the bathing suit. She felt the boat start to move after she'd gotten dressed and before going back on deck, she grabbed the bouquet of flowers unable to resist being a little romantic herself. When she was above deck, Kevin was focused on driving the boat and was thankfully doing just fine. She waited until they were further out and Kevin was relaxed before she came out so he could see her. When he saw her, Kevin smiled and turned from the helm so he could just stare at her.

"The flowers are perfect," Amber said.

"Of course they are. You'd picked them," Kevin smiled.

"Nine years ago," Amber smiled. "I can't believe you remember the colors of the bouquet."

"Of course I remember," Kevin said and approached Amber so he could take her in his arms, the bouquet between them. "That cupcake below deck is the same flavor of our wedding cake too. I don't know if you noticed it, but there was also a record player below deck."

"I actually did not notice it," Amber said.

"You wait up here while I go turn it on," Kevin said and kissed her before leaving to go below deck. While she waited, Amber looked out on the water, but it was still. There didn't appear to be any whales migrating. Then the sound of a very familiar song started coming from below deck. One she'd not heard since their wedding day: Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral. She heard Kevin come back above deck and she faced him to see he was in his own pair of black swim trunks.

He didn't say anything. Instead, he approached her offering his hand. She accepted and was gently pulled to his chest and the two started waltzing gently on the boat deck. She remembered this song vividly and how she'd walked down the aisle to this song played live for them while she was on her father's arm. She remembered how she'd cried and how Kevin had gently brushed away every tear. She remembered when they exchanged their vows, when the guests cheered once they'd shared their first kiss as husband and wife. Then she felt Kevin brush his thumb just under her eye.

"Are you okay?" Kevin asked.

"This song just brings back good memories," Amber answered.

"Yes it does," Kevin smiled. Then he leaned down to give her a kiss, but just as their lips met, there was a sound in the distance that grabbed their attention. It was a high pitched sound and when they turned to see the cause of the sound to see a handful or Orca whales coming up from under the water only to disappear back into it.

"Are those Killer Whales?" Amber asked and ran to the front of the boat so she could get a closer look. Kevin followed close behind her and wrapped his arms around her while they watched. They didn't get to see them for very long. It was a small pod and they were gone in a matter of minutes, but it was a sight to behold. "They're larger than I thought."

"They're not as big as blue whales," Kevin said and kissed her neck. "No less majestic, though. They're extremely intelligent animals."

"I don't doubt it," Amber said. She turned around to face Kevin, still holding the bouquet, and stared lovingly into his eyes. The sun nearly gone over the horizon and the moon was up and bright in the darkening sky. "Thank you for this. I dare say this is the most romantic anniversary we've ever shared."

"Sounds like next year I'll need to try a little harder," Kevin said.

"I look forward to what you could possibly do to top this," Amber answered and lifted her head to kiss him.

Swept up in the moment and the music that was still playing – all music that had played at their wedding – on a record he'd specially made for them years ago to ensure they always had their music when they wanted it. Since the whales had passed, Kevin lifted Amber into his arms and carried her below deck. Amber dropped her bouquet on the floor of the small room, her attention more focused on Kevin. He sat on the edge of the bed with Amber straddling his lap and only took his lips away once they were comfortable. He held her close and smiled at her. Then he reached for the cupcake and pulled the both of them further onto the bed. Then he placed the cupcake on the bed, held by a tiny plate, and grabbed a small knife.

Amber rested her had against Kevin's shoulder while they cut the small cake in half. Even if Amber didn't like the taste, she ate her portion of the cupcake with a smile remembering fondly when they'd done something similar the first time. After finishing their cake, Kevin got the sparkling wine uncorked with a loud pop and poured himself a glass while giving Amber just a sip's worth so they could drink together.

"Would you pay homage to your goddess if you're still thirsty?" Amber asked, being bold in the heat of the moment.

Kevin realized immediately what she meant and wasted no time. He turned her onto her back on the bed removing her bathing suit she'd been wearing for all of thirty minutes at best and delved to her core right away. Amber laid back with her hands in Kevin's short hair enjoying the feel of his tongue pleasuring her. The sound of the music playing, the waves hitting against the boat outside and their sounds of mutual pleasure left her head spinning feeling as though she were falling. She whimpered and moaned and called out his name with more intensity the closer she came to release until she finally reached it. She clutched onto his head while her body trembled but she was not given more than a moment's relief. Kevin quickly came back up and took Amber in his arms before he slipped inside her. His movements started slow and tender but it wasn't long before he picked up the pace considerably until they clung to each other as though for dear life.

Amber reached her pinnacle and with such intensity that her long nails gripped desperately into his skin. Then she pushed Kevin onto his back so she could ride him but also so he could see her with the light of the moon to her back that was creeping in through the entryway of the room. She kept up her hips' movements until she felt Kevin's hands grip her tight just an instant before he forced her down to him so he could hold her during the last waves of his release. Short of breath and satisfied, the two of them remained in each other's arms. Kevin was nearing sleep when Amber reached for their wedding album. She went through each page very slowly, taking in each picture of them together, first apart before the wedding, then during the ceremony, when they'd signed their Ketubah and so on.

"When we got married, it was the happiest day of my life," Kevin said, his voice thick with sleep.

"For me too," Amber said.

"Since then, every day with you has been the happiest day of my life."

Amber smiled and kissed Kevin's chest, "For me too."

"Happy anniversary, Amber," Kevin said.

"And to many more." They smiled at one another before their lips met in a brief but tender kiss. "I love you."

"I love you too."
