The consequences of some events knock on the door at the least opportune moments, the idea that a human's worth doesn't depend on who he was born sprouts green leaves, and readers learn things they didn't learn from the show.

Arthur shouted into the cell before Halig's clenched fist could swing and find its mark. He would have admonished the bounty hunter instantly had his attention not been drawn to the figure slumped in the chair at the centre of the room. (Set in s02e09. Halig takes Merlin to the dungeons for an interrogation. Arthur doesn't quite get there in time to stop him.
