A Battle

The snake reared its ugly head, ready to strike…

"Sectumsempra!"

A shrill female voice rang out, and Harry opened his eyes to find Hermione, her wand pointed at Nagini. Deep gashes immediately appeared on the reptile's slender body and it flailed violently as if struck by lightning. It fell to the floor, hissing and writhing in pain. A particularly deep cut had nearly severed its head which dangled on by a few inches of flesh…

"Diffindo!" Hermione cried out with all her might and the resulting jet of red light did the job. Nagini was dead.

And then, Harry's scar burst open with white hot pain. He was Voldemort, flying unsupported over vast lands, approaching them with great speed…

Nagini… his precious Nagini … his Horcrux… was dead… that boy, he had to get that boy… and the Mudblood girl… two of his Horcruxes, his anchors to immortality were gone… which ones were left? The locket in the cave… the ring in the shack… the cup in Snape's vault… and the diadem in that unknowable room at Hogwarts… he had to check on them, secure them, lay impenetrable defences… but first kill the boy, kill the boy…

"He's coming! Hermione! He's coming! We have to leave!"

Too late. Hermione could only stare in abject terror, her face white and her pale lips trembling as the bedroom door was thrown wide open. The Dark Lord stood in the doorway, his wand aloft and his face furious.

"Avada Kedavra!"

The Killing Curse hit Harry squarely in the chest and he crumpled. Hermione shrieked, but something strange was happening.

Voldemort had collapsed on the floor.

It took Hermione only a second to take cognisance of the situation. Petrified as she was, her mind saw the golden opportunity that the terrible moment had presented. This was her chance to rid the world of this murderous monster. She pointed her wand at Voldemort's supine figure.

"Confringo!"

The Dark Lord was blasted into pieces. For the second time, Lord Voldemort had lost his body.
