The Beginning

Summary: A normal day in forks turns into an eye-opening experience for the Cullen family, the swans, and Billy Black.

Author's note: I am NOT the owner of the twilight saga despite my wishes, and this is me just using the wonderful characters Stephenie Myer created. Thoughts will be italicized and the part from the books will be in bold. Hope you enjoy the story.

It was a normal Saturday evening but that was all about to change for the Cullens and the others. Inside the Cullen house, Esme was in her office designing the next house while listening to Edward playing the piano downstairs. Carlisle was in his own study smiling as he read one of the books from his extensive collection. Jasper and Emmet were playing a video game as Rosalie sat on the couch watching her reflection in the glass. Meanwhile, Alice was moving at normal speed for them at least, to a human she would surely look like nothing but a moving blur, as she put new flowers into vases of water. Suddenly the doorbell rang.

"Alice what is that?" asked Edward curiously as he looked at the door.

I don't know,Alice answered. Her voice sounded confused; her eyes were clouded over letting Edward know that she was looking into the future.

"What do you mean you don't know?" He asked slightly confused himself.

"Will you two stop with the half conversation" whined Emmet. He always got annoyed when Edward and Alice had their private conversations. As they were talking Rosalie went to answer the door.

"It's a package," yelled Rose. Rose was a name only those closest to her were allowed to call her. She walked from the doorway into the living room holding a brown cardboard box.

"What do you think it is?" asked Emmet, who along with Jasper had turned around on the couch.

"Let's see it's probably something new for Edward's music collection," said Rosalie. She walked into the living room and set the box on the coffee table. Opening she was surprised to see books and a note on top.

"Dear Cullens- Please read this note and look at the contents of the book before you throw this away. It is vital that all of you read these books. They are not just regular books but they hold the Cullen family's future. You need to read the books with Charlie Swan and Billy Black. These people are going to be part of your family's future. You need to read one chapter of twilight then a chapter of midnight sun." Rosalie read out loud.

By now all the Cullens had come into the living room and were gathered inside the living room.

"Should we read the books?" asked Esme. She had always been one of the most curious of the family though Carlise took the title.

"It's a bunch of rubbish I bet" answered Edward who had already turned to his piano and begun playing.

"We should, it's not like we have anything better to do during break" Emmet whined.

Before Emmet even finished speaking Alice had become still. Not human still but unnatural still. Jasper moved towards his mate looking at her waiting patiently. He had become used to being there when Alice had her visions. A minute or two later Alice's eyes cleared. Edward who also had stilled had been watching her vision with her. The Cullens, Charlie Swan, and Billy Black all had been in the living reading the books. It had been one of her clearer visions. It had almost been looking through glass; as it had been so clear.

"We are going to eventually do it. We might as well do it now" said Alice.

"Fine" said Edward in defeat and in the hope to finish as soon as possible. Carlisle called Charlie and Billy asking them to come over. Despite being weary Billy thought he might get some secrets or insights on the bloodsuckers. Charlie on the other hand was just curious on why the Cullens were inviting him to their home. By the time both men got there it was almost noon.

"So why did you call us here?" asked Charlie

"My family and I received a package that asked us to read some books about our families together" stated Carlisle.

"You brought us here for a book," asked Billy, sounding annoyed. What is wrong with these bloodsuckers he thought. Edward, who had been smiling slightly, began to frown.

"Please just listen if it is not worth your time you can leave" he said.

"Fine," said Billy. For a minute there was silence; reading the silence jasper picked up the book called twilight.

About three things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was a part of him— and I didn't know how dominant that part might be that thirsted for my blood. And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

No. . . No . . . No vampires aren't real thought charlie.

"Actually you're very wrong, Charlie vampires do exist," said Edward.

How the hell did he know what I was thinking? Charlie was beginning to panic; he wanted to know what the hell was going on (his words, not mine).

"Carlisle I believe you should explain about us" Edward said.

"I know how hard it is to believe but there are things that we don't understand. I don't know why vampires exist or how they came to be but they do. At one point we were all human but each of us were turned into this." Carlisle said.

"You used to be human," asked Charlie, surprised, forgetting about Edward's mind reading momentarily. When he thought of vampires it never occurred to him that they were human first. He just thought of evil creatures who sucked peoples blood.

"Yes I was born in the 17 century and lived as a son of a pastor. My father believed that there were creatures that had to be exterminated like werewolves and such. He had me help hunt them once I became older. So many innocent lives were lost in the hunt for those creatures." said Carlisle, lost in thought he had a troubled expression on his face. Noticing Esme put her hands on Carlisle's and gave him a soothing smile. Charlie, who had taken note of this, decided to hold off judgment till they finished the books.

Is the change painful Charlie wondered, growing more curious as the conversation went on.

"The change is painful to say the least. It feels like being burned and put in a vat of acid all at once." Edward answered Charlie's unspoken thoughts.

"For me it was almost impossible to stop but I had never wanted to harm people even when I was turned. Not many of our kind would have stopped, they don't value human life the way we do. Most of your kind only see humans as food or a source of entertainment". Carlisle said. Charlie shivered hearing this; this is what he thought of when he heard of vampires.

"I want to hear more about your family later, especially about the mind reading but we should get to the books," Charlie said. Billy, who had been keeping quiet this entire time, was watching in anger. His best friend was sympathizing with a bunch of bloodsuckers.

Jasper sent a wave of calm towards him as he picked up the book and opened it.

"Preface . . ."
