Hello! I can't believe it's been like 4 years since I last updated this story. I've recently been on my yearly Danny Phantom binge so I decided it was finally time to update this story that I had forgotten about. Nonetheless, I've loved writing for this story, and I hope to publish at least a few new chapters soon.
Thanks for those that have been reading! :)
Disclaimer: I do not own Danny Phantom
Siblings are said to have a bond like no other. That the oldest one is supposed to provide support and protection to the younger one. Well, this wasn't exactly true in Jazz and Danny's case, although Jazz believed it was. She was always the one protecting her younger brother from their weird, ghost-obsessed parents, bullies at school, random ghost attacks…you name it. That's the way it had always been, since the day Danny was born and Jazz was just 2-years-old. It never crossed Jazz's mind that the roles would be reversed.
Until today.
"Danny? Danny! Are you listening to me?" Jazz asked, looking across the table at Danny who was indeed, not paying attention, his head resting in the palm of his hand.
"Huh? Wh-yeah, I'm paying attention!" Danny abruptly sat up, practically falling out of his chair.
"Good, because you know this stuff is going to be on your test, and you and I both know you can't afford to fail another one," Jazz lectured him.
Danny sighed, rolling his eyes at his older sister. "Yeah yeah, I know, I know." Jazz responded by glaring in his direction.
"Okay, time for your pop quiz then." She clapped her hands together.
"Pop quiz?! You know I'm not-" As if right on cue, a blue wisp escaped his mouth, and he jolted up from his chair. "Fine, but I'm going to the bathroom first," he told her, running out of the kitchen.
"You have 5 minutes!" Jazz yelled after him.
5 minutes later, Jazz looked up from the textbook she had been reading, glancing over at the clock. "Alright, Danny, your time is up," she said aloud to herself, heading in the direction of the downstairs bathroom. She knocked on the door. "Danny, this quiz won't take itself!" She called, tapping her foot against the carpeted floor of the hallway. "Danny? Are you alright?" She jiggled the doorknob. Locked. "Danny, if you don't give me a response, I will break this door down."
As if on cue, Jazz heard shots coming from outside, followed by shouts of anger and screams of fear. Forgetting about Danny, who was supposedly in the bathroom, she ran out the front door where she was greeted by the sight of Phantom, who was fighting a- vampire? No, definitely a ghost. Vampires aren't real, she thought.
Not wanting to be seen, Jazz hid in an alleyway near Fenton works, ducking behind multiple bags of trash. The fight went on for what felt like forever, Jazz watching the two ghosts exchange shots, punches, and banter. From what she could make out, Phantom only had a few cuts and bruises, but he had clearly beaten the other ghost, as it fell to the ground before flying away, out of her sight. She was about to come out of the alleyway when she spotted Phantom looking at her. She made to wave at him, but he flew away, opposite of the vampire ghost. She slowly peaked out of the alleyway, about to go up the stairs to Fentonworks, when she spotted…Danny? Who was headed… down the stairs? Where in the house was he??
"What are you doing out here?! Where were you? I called for you multiple times!"
"I-" Danny started, but Jazz caught him off.
"Were you in the house? There was a ghost fight, you could've gotten hurt!" Jazz yelled, ushering him back towards the front door.
Before either one of them could get inside, they saw something out of the corner of their eye, turning to the right to see the vampire ghost flying directly at them, arms outstretched. Jazz yelled, and Danny reacted immediately, phasing both him and Jazz through the door before the ghost could shoot at them. "Danny?" Jazz asked, surprised and confused at what just happened. "What did… what just-"
"Wait here!" Danny yelled at her, running outside towards the ghost. Jazz watched as he left, and saw 2 white rings travel up his body.
What the hell was that??
"Fine, I'll stay inside, but not because you told me to," Jazz said to herself.
But Jazz was the big sister. Jazz was the protector. She wasn't going to be the one being protected by the person she's been trying for 15 years to protect. But she was scared of what that ghost would do to her. She was worried about Danny, yes, but now that she knew he was, what, a ghost? Whatever he is… She knew he could defend himself. He doesn't really need his big sister's protection.
Except when Jazz looked out the window, she didn't see Danny. She saw...Phantom? But...where did Danny go? Unless...
All the pieces fell into place. Over the past 2 years, Jazz had been worried about Danny's grades slipping, and then eventually, him coming home way past curfew, covered in bruises, cuts, blood, exhaustion completely overtaking him. Jazz had said something about it to him once, to which he just shrugged it off. Since then, she had made a mental note to keep an eye on him and protect him.
Jazz snapped out of her daze and turned her attention back to the fight.
Danny looked beat. He wasn't floating far off the ground, and Jazz could tell he was exhausted. His body was starting to go limp, and she could see something dripping down his left arm. Ectoplasm? Blood? Maybe both.
Jazz turned away from the window, about to head down to the lab, but suddenly stopped in her tracks. She fell to the ground, covering her ears. What the hell is that sound? She shut her eyes, hoping it would be over soon.
As soon as the sound had started, it stopped. Jazz slowly opened her eyes, removing her hands from her ears, and stood up. Do I dare look out the window? She pondered, scared to see the result of the fight. Going against her thoughts, she pulled back the curtain. On the ground, she saw Danny, human Danny, alone. Was that him that made that sound? Where's that other ghost…?
Seeing Danny on the ground, Jazz bolted out the front door, running over to him. He was on his hands and knees, head down, breathing fast and heavy.
"Y-yeah. I'm fine," he told her through heavy breaths, not looking up at her.
Jazz hesitated. "Come on, let's get you in the house," she wrapped her arm around his back, his arm around her neck, and walked him into the house.
Jazz rested her little brother on the couch of the Fenton family living room, and then walked into the kitchen to get him a glass of water and the first aid kit. When she came back, Danny was resting his head in his hands, his breathing back to normal. Jazz slowly approached him, sitting down on the couch next to him. "Are you sure you're alright?" She asked again. He lifted his head up, and Jazz handed him the water, to which he gratefully accepted.
Danny took a deep breath. "Yeah, just exhausted. That power takes a lot of my energy," he said, taking a sip of the water.
"Speaking of, do you mind telling me exactly what happened?"
"Well Plasmius-"
"From the beginning, Danny."
Danny sighed, running his hand through his hair. "The portal electrocuted me. The ectoplasm infused with my DNA, giving me ghost powers, and therefore making me half-ghost." Jazz didn't even act surprised, like she already knew where he got his powers from, learning of their existence, what, 20 minutes ago?
"So, you've been ghost fighting? As…Phantom?" Her voice wavered.
"Yeah."
"Mom and dad don't know, do they?" She already knew the answer.
Danny gave her a small smirk. "What do you think?" Jazz just returned the smile.
"Here I was, for the past 15 years, thinking I needed to protect you. Turns out I was the one who needed the protection," Jazz gave him a sad smile, grabbing his hand.
"I wouldn't be so sure about that, Jazz. Not only have you unknowingly protected me from mom and dad's ghost inventions, you've also helped protect my grades, and just now when you carried me inside," Danny reassured her. "You"re always going to be my protector," he smiled at her.
Jazz gave him a big, genuine smile. "I'm so proud of you little brother. Now, let's look at that arm, and get back to that pop quiz!"
"Jazz…seriously? I just saved your life and you're going to make me do a pop quiz?" Danny whined, throwing his hands up. Jazz laughed at him, ruffling his hair.
My protector.
