Hey everyone here's the next chapter I hope you enjoy it! Thank you so much for your reviews and kudos they always inspire me to write more, I am thinking of posting an alternate version of this story that will be a bit more intense with the mate dynamic and a bit heavier on the spice then I intend this one to be what would you think of that?- Dayin
Dr Cullen's features tightened reflecting the storm of emotions he was feeling within, a faint furrow appearing on his forehead. The scent of Bella's blood lingered in the air as he waited anxiously on the results.
After drawing Bella's blood he had immediately left the room doing his best not to let his reactions show on his face. If he was right about the scent he was picking up from her blood damage control was going to be needed, and a lot of it. The smell of the mating enzyme had been unmissable once her blood had been exposed to the air, a shock to say the least for the unsuspecting doctor.
The first step of that damage control was to ask the nurse to go and sit with Bella while they waited on the results, both to keep an eye on the very sick girl and to ensure she didn't try to run.
Initially he had been angry at Bella for lying about her mate status but now as he was rechecking her file it was clear she truly had no previous mate status. A fact that should have been impossible to say the least. All babies were automatically tested and entered into the system at birth and blood tests were given upon entry into school for children as well.
His duty as a physician and a guardian of vampire-human relations compelled him to remain patient, awaiting the results before drawing any conclusions. When the results confirmed her mate status he would need to ascertain how she has avoided being found or how someone has hidden her.
"Dr Cullen I have your results for Isabella Swan" the nurse in the blood testing station called out. He walked towards her drawing in an unneeded breath and preparing for the results that were sure to rock their hospital. Finding a mate that had been taken and hidden so effectively was no small matter.
"Thank you Janet" he said, taking the stack of paperwork she was holding out to him.
He quickly flipped through the papers and began to read over the results. As he feared her white blood cell count was extremely high meaning she had an infection making appendicitis more likely, now they would just need a sonogram to confirm.
His eyes scanned down and landed on the mating enzyme section. His eyes confirming what he had already known.
Isabella Swan was an unregistered mate.
The world of problems this was going to create was immeasurable and his head almost ached with the weight of all that had to be done. Doing his best to think logically he knew that taking this slowly one task at a time would be the only way to ensure it was properly handled. At the top of the list was making sure she got better and while they did that they would need to add her to the registry today and see who her mate could be.
Even if her mate was a low ranking vampire this would be a matter of international scandal but if her mate was someone of any kind of notable rank it could cause catastrophe for all involved.
He almost had to pity the disgusting bastard responsible for such a heinous crime.
Deciding he needed to get started and knowing what had to be done he made up his mind and headed towards the maternity ward at the hospital.
The maternity ward held two things he needed at this moment, the sonogram machine so he could check Bella's appendix and also the Mate Registry office.
The Mate registry office was typically the team that handled registering all the babies and sending out the school registry teams however in the rare cases like this they would be the ones to investigate just how Bella had fallen through the cracks and they would be the ones to make it right.
He entered the vampire safe portion of the Registry office that was there to avoid vampires accidentally running into mates. Truly it was probably overcautious as the odds of a vampire finding their own mate on a short visit were very small, but it was part of the strict rules humans had put in place to ensure that no vampires found their mates when they were still children.
The humans were understandably determined that even if mates were predestined that they would be able to have conscious choice and consent should they choose to be with their mate, something they could only do once they reached adulthood at 18.
"Good morning Darlene, I am afraid I have come to you with a rather disturbing and tricky case today." he explained, his voice filled with concern as she looked up at him shocked.
"I am not sure how I can help Carlisle; surely you aren't working on a mate you know that that is against policy?"
"I was not intentionally working on a mate however it was discovered during a blood draw that my patient is an unregistered mate"
"Oh dear that really is quite the head scratcher the poor dear it must have slipped past us in the rush for emergency care, I didn't know you also worked on new-borns?" she said, concerned and alarmed by his presence knowing he should never really be involved in a mate case at all and if a new-born had made it out of their care in an emergency there would be a serious review of their procedures.
"I actually don't, my patient is seventeen years old she just came in with what I expect to be appendicitis"
"What she is seventeen why didn't she tell the nurses she was a mate?" she questioned going pale in horror.
"That's where things unfortunately get very complicated, you see Bella reported she was not a mate when she made the appointment and upon checking she is definitely not in the registry. But when I went to draw her blood to test her white blood cell count I noticed what was unmistakably the mating enzyme scent. I drew some extra vials and had them rushed through testing and my fears were confirmed she is indeed an unregistered mate"
"But that is simply not possible," she said astounded.
"I know it shouldn't be but it is, you can read the paperwork for yourself" He offered handing it over to her "I have a nurse sitting with her now and I wanted to ask how to proceed as I am at a loss, but I must also warn we will need to act quickly on the appendicitis I don't want her worsening further and her blood cell count was worrying already"
"I have to be honest I am unsure myself on what to do, obviously a full investigation will have to be launched, have her parents been contacted yet?" She said her voice unsure as she moved to search for any news reports on similar situations only finding some from the beginning of the takeover.
"No not yet, as they would be prime suspects in her concealment. I wanted to confirm with you and possibly the authorities to know if they need to be here as well to begin the investigation." he explained.
"You are right, I will call the Alliance immediately and we will wait on their instructions on who to inform. I will do my best to hurry them so we do not allow her to get sicker" she could only imagine the fall back if they found an unregistered mate and reported it only for the mate to die of a treatable disease.
"Another thing I feel is important to mention to them is Bella seemed absolutely terrified, first of me being a vampire and then once I had gained some of her trust of medical treatment in general I think she has been raised to fear us and possibly fear things that may lead to her being found. But that is just a theory and its only valid if her parents themselves were hiding her"
"You are probably right, that poor girl has likely been brainwashed. I do not know if you will be allowed to continue treating her but since it's already been established that you are not her mate and with you having your own mate I think an exception may be possible if you have built trust with her, I will bring it up to them when I call." She said looking deep in thought.
"No matter who completes her treatment I would definitely like to be updated on the situation, she seems like a good girl and I fear something dark is afoot here" he said with concern and warning filling his tone he had already become so protective of her as if she was one of his own children and he couldn't help but hope that this would finally answer a few of his own family mysteries.
However it did no good to dwell on such unlikely events at this time.
"Of course Carlisle I will let you know as soon as I know more if you have the sample of her blood brought over to me I will have her registered and if possible paired"
"Thank you very much Darlene you are a true gem, I will go to organise for the sonogram machine to be brought over to check Bella's appendix now while you talk to them" he explained, bidding her farewell for the moment as he walked away to make the necessary arrangements.
As he walked he could hear her begin speaking to who he assumed was the alliance mate hotline that only classified workers within the mate system had access.
The sonogram machine was only a few rooms up and he quickly instructed a nearby nurse to take it over to Bella's room and get it set up and ready for someone to come and check her.
Once he was done he walked back towards the mate registry office seeing Darlene was still talking he decided to sit in the waiting room across from her desk.
He hoped she had entered Bella into the system already while she called the Alliance to explain the situation as well as its time sensitivity because if her mate was out there he was sure to want to be informed of his mate's condition.
He could hear her hushed tones and worry from both voices as the situation was agonised over before the loud scrape of a chair alerted him to Darlene getting up and looking directly at him.
"Carlisle?" She called, waving him over towards her, the phone still held to her ear.
"Yes?" he said, walking quickly to her side.
"I have an Alliance supervisor here that wishes to speak with you if that is alright?" She asked in a voice filled with nerves, not that he could blame her talking to a supervisor was not a common occurrence.
"Yes of course" he confirmed, taking the phone gently from her hand and holding it to his own ear.
"Hello?" He greeted the phone waiting on bated breath for the supervisor to speak.
"Hello is this Dr Cullen?" a stone voice responded back.
"Yes this is Dr Cullen speaking may I have your name?" he questioned politely wanting to know who would be handling the case, he had spent a good amount of time with the Volturi and many of the higher ups in the Alliance so it would not be unlikely for him to know the person on the other side of the call.
"Yes of course doctor, thank you for taking my call this is Supervisory Agent Demetri from the Alliance, I hear you have quite the situation on your hands over there?" he confirmed while getting right to the matter at hand.
"Yes we really do, the girl was an unregistered mate and even worse she is gravely ill." Carlisle confirmed with worry evident in his voice.
"This is of course not the ideal situation but finding a mate is always a blessed occurrence nonetheless, we are going to grant you special permission to continue the girl's treatment and an Alliance soldier will be on the way to help guard her while our investigation is underway."
"Thank you very much agent, may I continue with her treatment now, if it is appendicitis time is essential?"
"Yes you may, once her mate is found and we have some more answers we will make more firm long term decisions for her care but at this moment her healing takes precedent"
"Thank you very much"
"Of course, we will also have to be mindful of some procedures. They have approved you to continue to treat her and she is to have a guard from the Alliance posted at the hospital door and a human woman nurse to chaperone her at all times. Due to the uncertainty of this situation we also advise neither her or her guardians be informed that her mate status has been found and any visits to her are only to happen with you, her nurse and the Alliance guard present until the investigation is completed. Is all of that clear?"
"Yes, we will ensure that it is adhered to thank you again" he confirmed, surprised at how reasonable all the requests had been.
"Good job catching this Doctor hopefully we will find her mate and make someone very happy" Demetri praised kindly
"I hope so, '' Carlisle said, allowing a smile to cross his face as he remembered the happiness that finding his own mate had brought him.
"I believe it will, just please keep us updated on her welfare and any changes to the case" Demetri promptly reminded before saying goodbye and hanging up the phone
Carlisle walked back over to Darlene and popped the phone back onto its holder before relaying the instructions he had been given.
