"Here it goes" Nina whispered as she stood in front of the doorstep of Sebastian's family home. They arrived to Woodcrest the night before, where they settled in at a local five star hotel. Sebastian wanted to show her around town. He took her to a fancy restaurant and then the zoo where they watched the Christmas lights festival. It was one of the best moments of her life. She loved the idea of being in the town he grew up in now she was standing at the doorstep of his childhood home.
Suddenly, her feet could no longer move. For the first time, she was extremely nervous and doubts interrupted her mind.
"Babe, are you okay?" She felt warm hands curled around her shoulders. She looked up to him, "What if she doesn't like me?"
Sebastian lifted her jaw. " You're right. She won't like you, " he said. Her eyebrows wrinkled. "She'll love you. Just like I do, " he reassured her.
She kissed him. "Okay, I'm ready now, " she took a deep breath.
"Aight. Be cool, " he said, before ringing the doorbell.
Jazmine hesitated while she looked at the time. It was only 2:30 p.m. Dinner wasn't until 7.
Then she remembered Sebastian wanted to come earlier to help out. She knew her son, better to know he only wanted to have more time to look for something suitable to wear. She knew he was nervous about meeting Nina's father and he wanted to look his best.
Speaking of which, Jazmine took a peek at the mirror to verify her appearance. She wore a classic emerald embroidered dress with floral patterns in beige lace with nude pumps. Her naturally curly hair was styled in a shoulder length bob .
She made a big chop after her divorce and kept it short since then. Jazmine had stopped wearing makeup years ago, but when she wears it. She only wore little-to-no makeup. The more she aged the more she appreciated her natural beauty.
She eventually came downstairs and checked out her pastries. Jazmine always prepared deserts before dinner because she loved to take her time with them.
She was putting the table together when she heard the bell.
It must be them!
She hurried towards the door. She kind of wavered when she opened the door, even she was nervous.
"You'll see" Sebastian whispered while he kissed Nina.
Nina clenched her lips and nodded her head as the door opened to reveal her boyfriend's mother. She could not resist feeling a little envious of her beauty. She stood 5'2 with large breasts, a small waist, and curvy hips only a fully developed woman could own. She had light radiant skin and a thick shoulder length hair that was full of big beautiful natural curls, Sebastian had a brunette Afro texture. While Her hair had a ginger hue with strawberry blonde streaks. She had pretty long lashes with bright green eyes were round and broad like Sebastian and just like him she had freckles on her face, but they were strewn all over her slender nose.
Her full lips widened as she smiled. Then suddenly, she knew exactly where Sebastian's perfect teeth came from.
"Sebastian! Don't just stand there. Come in and give your mama some love" she exclaimed. Her voice was sweet and smooth.
She jumped upon him as she extended her arms in a warm embrace. He lifted his little mama off her feet.
"I missed you Ma," he said, setting her down.
"I missed you too, darling," she said, holding his face while tears were streaming down her eyes.
For a while, Nina felt awkward standing there, but then Sebastian grabbed the tips of her fingers and led her to Jazmine.
"Mama, I want you to meet my girlfriend Nina " he said.
Jazmine's eyes broadened, she was swept away by beauty before her. Nina was the most prettiest girl she'd ever seen. She was tall and had a deep toffee tinge complexion. She had deep maroon almond-like eyes which reminded her of someone. Her long tresses past her shoulders. She had the most beautiful frame nearly as a model. Her legs were long and shapely. She had the perfect figure making Jazmine desirous of being young again.
"Hello, it's a pleasure to meet you at last Miss Dubois," politely said Nina. She recalled that Seb told her that his mother did not have the same surname as him since his parents divorced.
"Oh Sweetie, Ms. Dubois reminds me of my mother," she laughed, touching her chest, "please call me Jazmine," she said politely. "And it's a pleasure meeting you too, " she said, giving Nina a big hug. She was immediately caught by surprise, but accepted the embrace. She felt self-conscious because she is not accustomed to this kind of affection. Not since her mom passed.
" "My God...You're absolutely stunning "Jazmine exclaimed, wiping her tears. Sebastian wasn't lying about how emotional she was.
"Uh, thanks. "Nina lightened her throat nervously ." "You are too. I don't know what you and dad have in your water, but I want some" she chuckled.
That wasn't a lie. Her dad may be in his forties, but according to all her college friends he was a "hot dad"it grosses her out when they drool over her daddy, but he was a good looking man. He followed his diet and trained several years to stay fit. The only thing that gave his age was the few grays he had that looked almost like tinted highlights.
"Oh" Jazmine gasped as she noticed something. "Is your father there?" she asked, hoping she had not accidentally shut the door in his face.
"Nah ma, he's on his way. The plane should land in an hour. " Sebastian stated.
"Okay, is he catching an uber here?"Jazmine asked.
Nina said, "actually, we thought it would be great if Sebastian pick him up from the airport while I stay here with you. I mean, if that's okay? "Nina anxiously inquired.
"Of course you can! You can help me cook" she said excitedly, palming her hands together.
"Great!" replied Nina.
"Great, I'll see if I can find you a pretty apron! Jazmine said that she ran enthusiastically into the kitchen.
Nina looked at Sebastian and smiled "eh, she's nice" for now Nina thought. Once Sebastian's off to get Dad, she'll probably change and ask a dozen questions.
She had a bad history with mothers. They were always kind. At first.
"I knew you would like her and she loves you already I can tell" he encouraged.
"I hope so, are you nervous about meeting Dad?" She asked concerned. She was nervous for him.
""Nah, I got this babe" he said, confidently. "Matter fact, let me head upstairs. I want to look my best when I meet him, " he said, kissing her cheek,
Oh no, he was leaving me alone Nina thought. As if Sebastian was able to read her thoughts, he kissed her forehead and caressed her shoulders.
"You'll be fine"
A profound sigh escaped her mouth,
"I hope so"
As time passed, Jazmine and Nina got along pretty good. She found out that Jazmine was a retired nurse practitioner who currently had her own food channel on YouTube. She was a business woman and an entrepreneur selling her own appliances and cooking books. Nina glanced at the desert table in awe, Not only did it smell and taste delicious, but it was very appealing as well. She added so many details in the decor. She was looking forward to supper.
"Well, Enough about me. " Jazmine clapped her palms together. She placed her hands on her thick hips. "Do you know how to cook? " And now here are the questions. Jazmine smiled awaiting for her response.
"I'm not much of a cook. My mom passed away when I was 10 years old before she could teach me. My dad and I always ordered out," Nina explained.
"Ohh...I'm sorry to hear you lost your mother at such a young age" Jazmine immediately regretted asking her this. She could tell from the girl's eyes that talking about her mother was hard for her.
"It's okay, it was a long time ago," said Nina with a weak smile.
"Maybe it was a long time ago, but even time cannot stop love", she immediately felt her heart tightened as she thought about him again. She looked at Nina and placed her hand over her shoulder slightly. "What I'm saying is, I don't know what it was like to lose your mother, but I just want you to know it's okay to talk about her. She may have left this earth, but she's still alive in your heart," Jazmine said.
Nina felt heavy in her heart as she spoke "my entire life I have always hidden my feelings about my mother because it made me so angry. I couldn't understand why she was taken from us. "
"My father never showed emotion either. It was as if he didn't care, but I understand everyone grieves differently but he completely shut down. He never even cried when my mother passed away. I felt like I needed to express myself, but he was like a brick wall" Nina explained. " He remains that way even after all these years. He's never emotionally engaged. The only time he ever smiled was when I was little he would smile for a moment but then it would fade away. Which is why I didn't want him to meet Sebastian. " Nina added on.
Jazmine couldn't resist feeling bad for Nina and her father. She was saddened that Nina could not mourn properly because she did not have the support she needed from her father. She understood what is was like to deal with someone who was guarded. She feared that Nina's relationship with her father may potentially harm her relationship with her son. Her only wish that she could talk to Nina's father in the hope of helping them fix their relationship, but she wasn't the type to intervene in other people's business..
"For this reason. I never expressed myself, but then I met Sebastian. " Nina began to smile. " Being with him made me a better person, but I was so afraid. I'm still am, " she admitted.
"What are you afraid of?" Jazmine asked.
"I'm afraid I won't be able to love him the way he deserves to be loved. I don't express myself all the time as he does with me. I'm not always as affectionate and open ," she explains. "Honestly, I'm afraid of becoming like my father " she admitted.
Nina took pride in her father's achievements and success, but nothing ever satisfied him. He was living a good life, but wasn't happy in it.
Jazmine's eyes softened. "Your father reminds me of a fellow I once knew," she said. "When he lost his parents, he was so angry. Mad at the world, you know. He never showed any emotion, but one day he finally broke and when he did, he was the most loving man I ever had. " She expressed. Jazmin's eyes were glistening.
Nina could tell whoever that fellow was he was special to Jazmine. She wondered if that fellow was Sebastian's father.
Jazmine found herself lost in Nina's wine eyes . She was in a moment when she realized that Nina was looking at her concernedly. She then turned to her. "I don't know why your father chooses to guard his walls, but I'm sure in his heart he really cares a lot more than you think," she added.
Nina sighed profoundly. She knew her daddy had a good heart but she didn't understand why he could never show it.
"Don't be ashamed of your father's mistakes. Learn from them and thrive. As a parent, we want what's best for our children, and I'm certain he wants what's best for you. " Jazmine explained. "My mother and father had a difficult marriage. They made an awful lot of mistakes, but amazingly, they stayed together. I have no idea how they did it, but I have always admired them. However, when I finally got married, I found myself making the same mistakes they made. " Jazmine admitted. "Unfortunately for me my marriage didn't make it"
Nina gave Jazmine a worried look, she continued on to say,
"For the most part, I've learned that if you love hard. Your actions will speak for you. All you have to do is treat one another the way you want to be treated and not do any harm you wouldn't want done to you. Do not forget that love should be equal, equitable and especially respectful. It won't always be easy, but if you both remember, you'll last a lifetime," she smiles at her.
Nina felt at ease. She smiled at how fortunate she was to find a man like Sébastien. She vowed to remember all that Jazmine said.
"Thank you so much Jazmine " Nina said.
" You are so very welcome," she smiled as she continued to prepare the sauce for the creamy herb chicken she was making, which was Sebastian's favorite dish.
"What you said was powerful," Nina pointed out.
"Sweetie...Love is powerful," Jazmine said with a nod. "Let me ask you this question. Is your daddy a meat lover?"She inquired."
Whoops, Nina thought like she forgot to mention her father hated meat. She immediately felt guilty about having already started preparing a chicken dish for tonight.
She rubbed her arms nervously " umm... he's actually is a vegetarian . My apologies for not mentioning it earlier!"
"Oh, that is alright. In case you didn't know, I'm a vegetarian myself. I was planning on making myself some glazed salmon with pasta salad. I'll make enough for your dad too, " she explained.
"Whoa, that sounds good," Nina said.
"I'll make enough for everyone, so you can have choices," she said.
Sebastien was right, she was cool.
"Nina would you be a dear and take that pink salmon for me and put in the sink?"
"Yes Ma'am," said Nina, she approached the refrigerator to open the freezer. As she did, she couldn't help but notice a picture of Jazmine when she was younger. She looked so innocent with her baby face. Her hair was much longer passing her hips. In her arms, she held a little boy who resembled Sebastian. Beside her was a handsome man with very fair skin and dark eyes. He looked very much like Sebastian.
" He looks like his daddy doesn't he?"Jazmine asked.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to be so noisy," Aaliyah said, feeling slightly embarrassed.
"Nonsense, that's fine." Jazmine said, picking up the photo. She handed it to Nina. "Sebastian's was just a year old," she said, with a smile on her face.
""He's so adorable. If you don't mind me asking. Is his dad in his life? Sebastian doesn't say much about him," Nina asked cautiously.
"Oh yes, Tristian is very much in his life, " she rolled her eyes at the thought of her ex husband. "When we got divorced, it was rough on Sebastian. He was so angry with his father for leaving, but I always told him he never left him. He left me. Eventually Sebastian opened up to him again, but it was never the same. " Jazmine explained.
"We attempted to make it work. Tristian and I" Jazmine continued. "But we both realized that we didn't love each other properly to sustain marriage. We had an open marriage until Sebastian was old enough. Once the Divorce was final, he remarried his lover."
""Wow, I'm sorry things didn't work out" Nina had no idea what to say.
Jazmine laughed", I only regret that things lasted so long. " She said, shaking her head. " If you're ever decide to get married, make sure you and your husband on the same page. And in case you decide to have kids. Don't stay for the sake of them. That was my mistake. I've given up putting my heart first and you can never do that. "
Nina would never abandon Sebastian and she hopes that he feels the same way. Her thoughts were interrupted when Sebastian walked into the kitchen, looking more handsome than ever. He was in his tuxedo.
"I hope good things are being said about me" Sebastian said, kissing Nina's cheek.
"Your mother and I were just talking about how adorable you were as a baby," Nina said, pinching his cheek.
"Mom, you haven't shown her the album book, have you?" He cringed.
"Oh, I was just getting to that" Jazmine said, winking at Nina. " But Nina found one of your pictures on the refrigerator. I was in the middle of talking to him about your father. " Jazmine admitted.
"Oh, the sperm donor." Sebastian looked up.
"Young man that is still your father and he loves you" Jazmine began to say.
""I know Mama, but forget about him. How do I look" he said, doing a quick spin. Nina and Jazmine laughed at him.
"You look sharp babe" Nina said, still giggling at her silly boyfriend.
"Very handsome as ever," Jazmine proudly said.
"Thank you ladies, " he said, smiling heavily. He blew his breath. He was jittery inside. " Okay, I'm about ready to head out to pick the GodFather" he said jokingly.
Nina gave it a nudge. "Better hurry up, you know how my daddy feels about being late" she reminded him. She adjusted his tie and stared at him with a worried face. "Are you you don't need me to come along?"
"No babe. This is something I have to do on my own. Man to man" He said, before kissing her gently.
Nina sighed. She had to put trust in her man. "Just be yourself " she said softly, she couldn't think of anything her dad wouldn't like about Sebastian. He was the perfect man, however, she was still concerned because she knew how her father was..
""Look after my mama while I'm gone," he said as he kissed her on the cheek. He gazed upon Jazmine, who admired them both. "Mommy, look after my lady will you?," he said.
She walked up to Nina and wrapped her arm around her. "We'll be fine baby. Drive safely and make sure you come back. Dinner is just about ready," Jazmine reminded him.
Nina bit her lip nervously as she watched her man leave. This was it, he was finally gonna meet her daddy.
Her only hope things go well.
Huey sighs at his watch. He had just landed and is already annoyed. Not only did his daughter Finessed him into coming here. She didn't even have the courtesy of meeting him at the airport. Instead, she sent her boyfriend who was already behind schedule.
He could not believe he was back in Maryland. He had left this place decades ago and despite the fact that his brother recently moved here, he still refused to return. He immediately thought of those people he left behind.
His granddad who eventually moved to Chicago when he got sick. His friends Ceaser, Hiro, and most importantly... her. He always wondered how she ended up. Probably was married to some rich white man with kids somewhere in France. It was her dream to live in Paris.
His thoughts were discarded when he saw a young man walking up to him in a blue suit. He was just as tall, fair-skinned with green eyes...
As he approached, he realized to what extent his eyes resembled her. It reminded him how much he loved those eyes.
"Huey Freeman?"
Huey raised his brow realizing it was the guy who had the heart of his daughter. Looked at him head to toe. He wore his hair in an Afro haircut almost like his own, except that the boy's hair was less groomed.
Sebastian swallowed deeply Nina's father grimaced at him. She wasn't lying when she said her dad was intimidating. He seemed like the type to never smile. He kept a serious look on his face that reminded him of Nina when she was angry at him.
Huey looked upon him. By the looks of him, he already knew he was black, which was a relief. He never liked the idea of his daughter dating outside her race. His very bright complexion was reminiscent of his old friend Cairo.
But one thing he never recovered from was how familiar his eyes were.
Sebastian couldn't deny, but the man was sharp. He had his hair cut low showing his Afro curls that was faded on the sides. His beard was classic full, but highly maintained.
He had a radiant toffee complexion like Nina with deep maroon eyes. He wore a suit that was a hell of a lot better than his own, complimenting the Rolex on his wrist. There was nothing old or weak about this guy. He had a youthful, radiant complexion for an old man. The man was tall but athletic. His body was constructed as if he had been trained in the army and he did not have a single wrinkle on his face.
He frowned upon his words. "It's Mr. Freeman to you, " he said darkly, his voice was low but strong.
"Uh. Mr. Freeman. My name is Sebastian Bryant. As you know, I'm here to pick you up and take you to my moms. Nina is there expecting us, "he explained.
Huey looked at his Rolex and back at him. "You're late, " he said, still glaring at his watch.
"My apologies for that. There was some traffic getting here, " Sebastian explained. Huey looked up at him in disgust.
"Which is why you should have been here an hour early," he declared.
Sebastian thought he was being an asshole, but he smiled anyway.
"You're absolutely right, but We should get going . We shouldn't keep the ladies waiting any longer" he said, as he began to walk out the airport. He could hear Huey's footsteps walking behind him. He sighed deeply, His back was probably on fire right now .
Sebastian felt his palms sweating as his grip tightened on the steering wheel. This had to be the most awkward ride of his life.
He picked up Nina's father 20 minutes ago and there was nothing more than silence between them. He offered him a seat in the passenger, but he insisted to sit in the backseat. He stole a few glances at the man from the rearview mirror. The man was looking out the window like he was having deep thoughts.
He must have felt Sebastian watching because he would soon look at him through the reflection of the mirror with the most menacing look on his face. It was like staring into a devil's eye. Huey never broke his gaze which causes Sebastian to swallow deeply and focus his eyes on the road.
Sebastian thought about his plan to propose to Nina on Christmas day, but he remembered he wanted to get Nina's father's blessings first. He knew if there was a moment to say something now was the time.
Mr Freeman appeared to be a direct guy, so he wanted a direct approach.
"How was your flight Mr. Freeman," he started to say.
"I survived didn't I, " he said sarcastically.
Sebastian laughed nervously. "I suppose this means your flight was good, then, " hope so he spent a ton of money to get the coach's seat.
Huey didn't answer at first. "It was tolerable," he eventually said.
Sebastian sighed in relief they were finally going somewhere. "Nina told me you lived in Woodcrest when you were younger. Do you miss this place? "He asked.
Huey thought about the question. Did he miss life in Woodcrest? He used to hate this place. Although he didn't he want to admit it, he did miss a certain someone from Woodcrest.
"White predominance, the supremacy of the white majority and the self-segregated community which extended primarily to the upper middle class of extremely wealthy and racist citizens. There were hardly enough black kids to even form a group. Who would miss that? " Huey responded.
Sebastian laughed hysterically which earned a brow raised from Huey. "That's historically true, however it not like that no more. Theres more diversity out here than white now, majority that live down here now are black, Hispanics and asians" he explained.
Huey remained silent.
"It's really not bad down here" Sebastian added.
Huey scoffed as he passed a bunch of houses with Donald Trump signs. Even if it was true that there was more diversity.
Nothing ever changes.
Sebastian sighed as he realized it was silent again.
Damn.
The small talk wasn't gonna cut ut . He knew he had go the straight-foward approach. He pulled over and put the car on parked.
"Mr. Freeman, there's something I need to get off my chest. I was going to wait a while before telling you, but I feel as a man to man I need to say this now" he said, trying his hardest to sound confident.
"Im listening" Huey said, raising bus brow.
"I know it's only been a year and a half, but I really love your daughter," Sebastian gulped deeply. " I intend to spend the rest of my life with her. "
" I'm not some dickhead or anything. I know what I want in life. I'm in college enrolled in one of the top engineering programs. Not only do I achieve good grades, but I work hard too. I never did drugs in my life and I don't plan to. I only drink occasionally but when I do I know how to handle my own. You're more than welcome to check my background and when you do, you'll that's it's clean." Sebastian said confidently.
"And the significance of you telling me this?" Huey squinted his eyes. He didn't care what school he came from and how hardworking he had claimed to be. His daughter was a smart woman she didn't mess around with no fools so he wasn't surprised nor impressed of Sebastian's status.
"The significance of this is I'm going ask Nina to marry me" he revealed. Huey's eye widened a bit then he went back to his original expression.
"You're asking for my permission to marry her?" Huey said nonchalantly.
Sebastian rubbed his neck nervously. "You can say that" he said, inside his heart was beating fast.
"What the hell you think this is the 1950s? " Huey raised his voice. " You don't need my goddamn permission to ask my daughter's hand in marriage!"
"Do I think it's a good idea to get married? Hell no!" He exclaimed. "You hardly know each other. You're still in that honeymoon stage. You're too young to know what you truly want in life and how in the hell are you gonna to be get married when you haven't even lived together yet? You know nothing about her family's background and vice versa. The same as you're being in school to became an engineer doesn't mean you'll become one. I'm sure you'll be successful if you make the right choices, however you think you love my daughter now it doesn't guarantee you'll love her in a long run. Regardless of how I feel about you marrying my daughter. " Huey said. " Nina is a grown woman. She makes her own decisions. What you two choose to do with your relationship is none of my business "
Sebastian was stunned by his words, but he wasn't gonna hold back. "I respect your opinion Mr. Freeman but I have to strongly disagree with you. What Nina and I have isn't mediocre. We're deeply involved. I know we haven't been together that long but since I've met your daughter, I felt like I've known her my whole life. I'm not gonna lie to you. There's still so much we have to learn about each other which is why I've arranged for this meeting to happen in the first place. " He stated. "I want to built something stronger and I know you mean the world to her and you may not like me now, but I'm willing to do whatever it takes to prove to you that I'm the right man for your daughter,"
Huey scowled at Sebastian as he went on. "I honestly don't think it matters what we end up doing in life. The most important thing is that we love each other and that we are determined to remain together for the rest of our lives. Shit's gonna be hard trust I witnessed my Ma go through some shit but unlike my deadbeat daddy. I'm not gonna give up on her. I will always be there for her regardless of what happens,"
"Even if she says no to my proposal. I'll never stop loving that woman. It's great that we have your blessing, but hopefully we can really connect."
Huey scoffed and shook his head. A part of him wanted to laugh. For a strange reason, he could not help but notice similarities between Sebastian and her. His bright green eyes beamed with hope and determination. Just as she was, Sebastian was naïve. He had no idea how the real world worked. He didn't understand that even a strong connection could somehow disconnect. He has not attained that part of his life in which he must struggle.
That boy didn't know shit.
"I never mentioned that you had my blessing. I refuse to support something that is linked to failure, but for the sake of my daughter's feelings, I will not intervene," Huey leans over his shoulder. "But if you hurt her," said he. "I swear to you. You'll be really sorry, "Sebastian's eyes widened at his tone. It sent chills through the spine.
Huey leaned back into his seat, while Sebastian gulped and turned on the engine. He could feel the intensity of his glare burning from behind. He went to turn the radio to try to lighten the mood, but then he realized he was out of gas.
"Shit, " he cursed under his breath. "I'm outta gas, " he announced.
"You mean to tell me that you have travelled an hour and a half without thinking that you will need a full tank of gasoline to get to and from your destination?" " Huey scoffed. "You can't show up on time and you don't check how much gas you need, but you think you're suitable to marry someone as intelligent as my daughter?" He scoffed.
Sebastien closed his eyes and clenched his teeth. This asshole was really getting to him. He sighed deeply without saying a word.
"In case you're not aware, there's a local gas station three minutes down the road. Continue straight and turn left, you're welcome," says Huey.
"I know," said Sebastian, but that was more a murmur. He turned off the engine as he reached the gas station, which he was very familiar with.
Huey recalls how she would beg him to give him a cappuccino every time he stopped for gas. He shook his thoughts in his head and exited the car with Sebastien who seemed very irritated.
"You can wait in the car if you like," said Sebastian, trying not to seem bothered.
'I don't need you to buy cheap fuel again, and I need something for the hostess. It's informal to go to dinner empty-handed," Huey said. "
"No, that won't be necessary. My mom's not like that. She doesn't care about that formal stuff"
"I don't care what your mother is like, but since my daughter insists I'll make a "good impression" Huey said.
"Sebastian sighed "alright" he couldn't wait to get back to Nina. He made sure to send her a quick text that he had made a stop. She immediately text back.
Nina: Are you okay? It was as if she could read his mind.
Sebastian: Your pops is something else but I'mma alright . Wbu? How's mom?
Nina: She's amazing!!!! I love her... sorry about dad. He hates being a passenger. Maybe offer him to drive instead?
Sebastian: are you kidding me? So he could take me to some hidden woods and kill me!
Nina: don't be dramatic babe.
Sebastian: I know babe. Im just joking...sort of but sure I'll ask him"
Nina: Awesome! So I'll see you in a few. Love you
Sebastian: love you more
He smiled as he stared at his text. He couldn't wait to marry that woman.
Ahem!
He rose his eyes to see Huey standing with a bottle of champagne in his hand.
"Oh my fault. Mr. Freeman. I was just texting Nina letting her know we stopped for gas, " he didn't understand why he felt like he needed to explain himself so much.
Huey didn't say anything but walked towards the cashier to pay for his items. " 50 dollars on pump 8 " he said, pulling out his debit card from his wallet.
50 dollars? For gas! Sebastian thought. He looked at the cashier with the same muddled look on his face. He almost didn't recognize his face until he spoke up.
"Sebastian? Is that you" The man asked, interrupting Huey's transaction.
Sebastian smiled "aye wassup coach Dev. I had no idea you worked here? " He exclaimed. He was thrilled to see his former coach from school.
"Yes, I finally retired in basketball. I needed something more laid back... so uh.. You still in college?"
"Yup, my second year of school." Sebastian nods.
"Wow, that's good to hear." The man licked his mouth, for a thought came to him. "So how's that fineee ass mama of yours. Is she single yet?"
"Chill... Coach Dev" Sebastian chuckled. "You know my mom ain't having that.. And I am not having that either" he said. Coach Devon always had the hots for his mother. He would always flirt with her and inviting her to a date she politely refused.
He laughed as he accepted Huey's payment. Huey glared at him, which urged him to move faster. He bagged his things and handed him his receipt
"Merry Christmas, sir," he said to Huey, who was eagerly waiting for Sebastian, who decided to buy a pack of gum.
The Cashier scanned his gum. "C'mon Seb, it's Christmas, help a nice man out. Put in a good word for me. I promise you, you'll love me as a step daddy, " he lifted his eyebrows up and down with excitement.
Sebastian slammed his teeth "stop playing coach," he didn't really like it when men drool over his mother. Yes she was indeed a very beautiful woman and she attracted even the eyes of some of his friends whom he would immediately tell them to back off.
"This is no game, my boy, it's love waiting. Have your mom call me. I'll show her a real good time" he laughed wickedly.
"She's spoken for," interrupted Huey.
"Damn really?" The man said with his eyes rises with disappointment. He looked over to Huey, who glare at him. "So you her man, huh?"
Huey wanted to roll his eyes at his desperation and stupidity. "Yes, she is my woman, so do yourself a favor and wipe out all the perverse thoughts you had of her. Unless you want me to do it for you," he said menacingly.
The man laughed nervously "Oh no, sir. I don't want any problems. " He smiled weakly. "You fellas enjoy the rest of your night "
Huey nodded and proceeded to the exit.
"Erm, see you later, coach," said Sebastian, feeling embarrassed second-hand. He followed Huey as he was already pumping gas.
"Hey, what was that?" He asked.
"What was what?" Huey said, unbothered,
"When You defended my moms. " he grinned. "Your woman? "He chuckled.
" There was nothing to defend. I'm just trying to get to the destination without any interruption," said Huey.
Sebastian chuckled, " but Thank you anyway "
"You really shouldn't let these so-called role models harass your mother like that. I really hope your not as passive to let that shit happen to my daughter " He mentioned.
"I wouldn't let anyone disrespect her" Sebastian said is defensively.
"Said the guy who just let another man disrespect his mother because he's his favorite coach. I find it hard to believe," Huey said, by putting the gas petal in the station,
Sebastian blew a sharp breath. "What was I supposed to do? Huh? Beat his ass?"
"All I'm saying is he shouldn't be that comfortable to talk like that about any woman in your life. However, I don't expect you to do anything you can't handle, it takes a real man to handle real men business" Huey said, getting under his skin.
"Whatever, I'm not going to jail over no nigga moment" He mumbled.
"What" Huey looked at him immediately.
"I said could you drive?" Sebastian said, tossing him the keys which Huey caught.
"Where did you hear the term nigga moment from?" Huey asked, getting in the driver's seat. He remembers only he and Riley knew of that term. It was something they experienced growing up in Chicago, but remembers mentioning it when grandpa had his first fight in Woodcrest.
"Oh nigga moment?. "Sebastian was laughing, sitting in the passenger seat, forgetting that he was mad. "My grandfather always mentioned it to me as a child. He told me about that time he experienced it when he thought my grandma was leaving him for a singer"
"Hm" Huey snapped on his seat belt. Sebastian laughed hysterically as he envisioned his grandfather Tom, slapping singer Usher. Huey turned on the engine as Sebastian went on to explain his "nigga moments".
"Are they alright?" asked Jazmine with anxiety. They were half an hour late and this was beginning to concern her.
"They're made a stop. They should be here shortly " Nina smiled while sending Sebastian a text message. She looked up at Jazmine, who was dimming the lights in the dining room. The chandelier shone through the room.
"Would you like some help?" asked Nina.
Jazmine chuckled " sure, why not? "She used her finger to tap her lip. "Hmm... you could help me set the table" Nina placed down her phone. "Alright"
"How about some music?" Jazmine suggested.
"As long as it isn't Christmas music " Nina added.
Jazmine looked down at her Mariah Carey Christmas records sadly. "Oh yes, I forgot," she said as she went through the collection. She smiles keenly and wields a Nina Simone record.
Birds flying high, you know how I feel
Sun in the sky, you know how I feel
Breeze driftin' on by, you know how I feel
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life for me, yeah
It's a new dawn
It's a new day
It's a new life for me, ooh
And I'm feeling good
Nina's eyes expanded and as the record played her eyes began to glow. Jazmine was swinging her hips and singing the lyrics to the song but the record stopped abruptly.
Jazmine gasped as she saw Nina standing near the record player with tears in her eyes. Jazmine rushed over to her side. "Nina, what's the matter?"
Nina looked away, feeling embarrassed. "I'm sorry.. It's just That was my mom's favorite singer," she revealed. "She even name me after her," she chuckled tearfully. "When I hear that song it reminds me so much of her"
Jazmine covered her mouth. "Oh sweetie. I am truly sorry. I had no intention of offending you. " She felt horrible.
"No its fine" Nina said. "But I would appreciate it if you would listen to something other than that," she politely asked.
Jazmine looked sympathetically at her. "Of course "She switched the record the classical music. She heard Nina sigh in relief. She sat down on the sofa and thought about her mother.
Jazmine placed her hand on her shoulder. "Is there anything you need?"
Nina kept her head down. "No thank you"
Jazmine sat beside her. "Would you like to talk about it?"
Nina didn't respond. Jazmine was on the verge of getting up and giving her a little space when she spoke again
.
" She would always play that song while cleaning she chuckled. "It annoyed the crap out of dad. He would complain, but I know he secretly enjoyed the song "
Jazmine laughed, "Oh yeah?"
"Yeah, he would rant about her days as a civil right activist. " Nina laughed at the memory. "Then my mom would come out and debate with him. She loved to challenge him. They debated for hours on end. "
"Sounds like they really loved each other " Jazmine said.
"Well, they did. I believe deep down my dad misses mom and that's why he's the way he is"
"It's so heart-wrenching. I can't imagine losing someone that way, I would rather be apart, but alive than apart from death. " Jazmine said, thinking of Her lost love.
"I would die if I lost Sebastian," added Nina. "I always wondered how my father was able to stay so strong"
"Because he knew he didn't have a choice." Jazmine assumed. "Maybe he felt he should put his emotions aside to be strong enough for you"
Nina sighed, "Yeah, I guess you're right." She nodded. "But I never wanted him to set aside his emotions for me. He shut down completely even after all these years he still hasn't opened up"
"Because he needs someone to open his heart" Jazmine said.
Nina bent her forehead, "What's that?"
"Forgive me if I'm wrong, but it appears that what your father needs is something that you might not be able to offer him." Jazmine speaks with care. She could tell it was a triggering subject. He cleared her throat nervously. " he needs intimacy"
Nina laughed " Are you suggesting my dad date someone else to forget my mom" Nina said angrily.
"No, no sweetie. That's not what I meant. I don't believe he will ever get over your mom, I'm sure she'll always have a place in his heart, but I can only imagine how lonely he must feel especially now that you're growing up. That's probably why he's interfering with your love life, he's not prepared to let you go," Jazmine suggested.
"It's not like I'm disappearing on him. I will always visit him"Nina exclaimed.
"I have no doubt about this, but you have to live your own life. You can't always take care of your daddy. You're gonna be a wife one day and you'll have a husband to take care of. " Jazmine changed the subject. She didn't give hints towards the engagement. "My point is that he needs a woman to look after him. It doesn't have to be what he had with your mother, but a championship would be great for him."
Nina found herself somewhat offended by Jazmine's words, but at the same time she knew she was right. She let out a sigh. "I do want my dad could be happy again, it took him four years to the date after mom, but it never lasted because none if then could compare to my mom" Nina she shook her head.
And to be honest, I never felt good about him going out with another woman. I know it's selfish, but I don't know if I'm willing to see him move on," Nina said.
Jazmine nodded her head. "I get it. It must hurt because you always imagine your parents being together forever and that's a beautiful thing, but unfortunately forever isn't always guaranteed" Jazmin bit her lip, realising the depth of her words. She used to live in a fairy tale, but now she couldn't believe how much she has changed. Jazmine shifted in her seat. "Sebastian felt that way about his father and me. He wanted us so bad that he didn't realize how miserable we were. It took him time to accept them we're are happier without each other."
Nina rolled her eyes. Jazmine recounted her words. "And I know your dad's situation is very different from ours, but the result is always the same. And I know that you love your mother and that she will always live in your hearts, but your father deserves happiness too. I guarantee you regardless if he dates or not. His love for you is not going to change."
Nina stood up and shook her head. "I don't know. She knew Jazmine had a point, but she wouldn't admit it. She looked over at Jazmine.
"Jazmine?"
"Yes, dear?" She said softly.
Nina shits her eyes ". Please don't take this the wrong way, but I prefer not to talk about it anymore, "she looked at Jazmine hoping she didn't offend her.
Jazmine nodded in agreement. "Of course, " she smiles indicating to her that it was okay. She rose and clenched her hands. "How about I show you that album book " she winked at Nina who giggled in response.
"You mean Sebastian's baby pictures?" Nina asked anxiously.
"Baby pictures, middle school and high school. You name it "Jazmine smiles.
Nina bursts into excitement. "Oooh! Yes show me all the embarrassing ones!"
While Huey was behind the wheel, Sebastian thought about what he said earlier. "I know you probably won't believe me when I say this, but I really love your daughter "
Huey darted His eyes at Sebastian before returning them to the road. Sebastian continued on,
"I would never do anything to hurt her. I can't imagine harming the only woman I've ever loved".
Huey felt a speck in his chest when he remembered that he had uttered those exact words. He never thought he would hurt her.
"You should never make promises. There is no guarantee that you will keep them," Huey said truthfully.
"What do you mean?" said Sebastian, slightly offended.
"You said you would never hurt her, but the truth is you don't know what the future holds. You think you have everything under control because you haven't experienced the worst yet," Huey said.
"If it gets bad, we'll find a way to work it out. I believe that what we have is strong enough to survive anything," said Sebastian.
"You don't know how strong you are together until you deal with real issues. You can't predict how you're going to handle anything you have yet to experience. Believe it or not, I was both young and in love. " Huey revealed.
"Yeah but you married the love of your life and it's unfortunate that you lost her. Nina told me about her mother's death. How challenging it was for you," Sebastian mentioned. He made the assumption that Nina was cold-hearted because he lost his wife.
"You don't know shit about my wife's death so don't speak on it" Huey said sternly. "And you're wrong. I didn't marry the love of my life. I broke this woman's heart years ago and I never saw her again," He squeezed his hand on the wheel.
Sebastian's eyes widened, "Wait.. So you gave up? ," He wondered. "No offense, but if it were Nina, I would try to find her and make things right"
"There wasn't anything to fix. We both realized we didn't want the same things in life and it interfered with our relationship, ultimately we ended things"
"Damn, so if it was a mutual breakup. How did you break her heart? " He asked.
Huey took a while to respond. He could feel the guilt inside his chest. "She didn't want to end things. " He admitted. "She begged me to come back the day after we parted ways, but I told her I didn't want to be with her and then I blocked her." Huey darted his eyes, feeling ashamed. "That night I left to Chicago and never looked back, We never speak since"
"Damn.. But didn't you love her? "Sebastian shook his head.
Huey was hesitant to answer. He sensed his teardrop from the corner of his eye, but he dared not let it fall. He didn't like talking about his past. " More than anything, but I realized she deserved so much more than what I could offer to her, so I let her go and she moved on with her life and so did I" he said casually, but inside it still haunted him. He could imagine how heartbroken she felt that he would reject her. She suspected he moved on, but that wasn't the case. Truth be told, he didn't feel he was good enough for her, so he let her go. Letting her go was the hardest and biggest mistake of his life.
"Damn," Sebastian said, speechless. "You ever regret this?"
"I don't live with regret, I move forward, " he said, but deep inside he regretted it. He didn't regret meeting Nina's mom because she blessed him with a beautiful girl, but if he could go back in time, he would never leave the woman he really loved.
Huey sighed, " The moral of the story, If you truly want to have a successful relationship with my daughter, I advise you to ensure that you make sure that you both want the same things in life." Huey said. "I'm not saying you're supposed to share the same career goals, but you need to know if your lifestyle is going to be consistent with hers. If I could take a guess, You want to get married and have kids?"
Sebastian's grinned at the idea.
" Yeah, I want to have a huge home full of kids? At least eight "Huey eyebrows elevated.
"Okay, so you're looking to settle down with kids, but ask yourself this? Do you believe she would want the same. I know Nina wants to travel the world. How will you be able to follow that lifestyle with kids?"
Sebastian gave it some thought. He knows Nina wanted to travel the world, but he didn't know if she wanted to settle down.
"Your silence tells me that you should not embark on something as grave as marriage. You are not prepared."
"I'm prepared, we're prepared," said Sebastian with confidence.
"What makes you so sure?" asked Huey.
"Because I will go around the world with her. I'm not in a rush to have children. It can wait, just because we're engaged doesn't mean we have to get married tomorrow. We have all the time to get to know each other better before we tie the knot and I'm confident about that," said Sebastian.
Nina was very similar to her dad, she wasn't the type to settle and have kids. She never enjoyed the idea of kids. She would always get annoyed when Riley brought the kids over. Yet he knows that things can change. He once believed that he would never have children and Nina arrived, so that things could change. He did not believe that it was guaranteed. If Nina's anything like her father, She will only end up crushing his dreams.
But it wasn't his place to tell him. Besides, he didn't really care.
He checked his GPS which indicated that they had reached their destination. The neighborhood reminded him of his home Timid Deer Lane. Each house was decked out with colorful lights and attractions. There was one house that stood out them all. It was covered with sparkling white lights, magnificently decorated with Christmas decorations.
"Is this the house?" Huey asked.
"Yeah," said Sebastian. "Over the top like my half-white mama, " he said.
Half white? Why does everything reminded him
Of his ex. He sighed deeply as he mentally prepared himself. He used to hate Christmas. He really hated the people who celebrated it, everyone
Except.
Huey looked at Sebastian, who was eagerly opening the door, but then
"Wait"
Sebastian stared at him confused "what's wrong"
"We need some accommodation. Shut the door," said Huey. Sebastian followed his orders.
"I need you to keep whatever we talked about between us. I haven't told Nina about my past and since her mother's death, she's been very sensitive about me and other women."
"What you mean?" Sebastian asked.
"She doesn't like to admit it, but she has a hard time accepting that I can be in love with someone other than her mother," Huey confessed.
Sebastian frowned, "Yes, she mentioned that she never liked anyone you dated"
Huey frowned "that's besides my point. I need you not to speak of my past to my daughter," he said harshly.
"I mean, I really don't like keeping things from her"Sebastian mentioned.
"I'm not giving you a choice" Huey said seriously. 'It's not up to you to tell her something that's specific to me. I don't see the importance. The past is behind me and I have every intention of keeping it that way.
Sebastian swallowed and threw up his hands in defense. "Alright, alright. I won't mention it, " he really didn't want to get on Huey's bad side.
"Good" Huey said, unbuckled his seatbelt and got out of the car. Sebastian sighed in relief as he walked along with him.
As they walked towards the house, Huey felt this weird notion in his stomach. Maybe it was because of the fact Christmas decorations always reminded him so much of her. Indeed, the home was almost like the DuBois residence. This is something which gave him a feeling of nostalgia. It made him feel sick.
"I have a spare key. We should sneak in on 'em," Sebastian said, interrupting his thoughts. His voice was full of excitement.
"Nina doesn't like surprises, and I don't play kid games"
Sebastian chuckled " nonsense, every woman loves a surprise.
"It's not much of a surprise if they're expecting us," Huey said as they approached the porch.
Sebastian chuckled " Aw, you're no fun," he said, pulling out the key.
"Oh my God, Sebastien wore braids!" Nina laughed hysterically. Jazmine nodded "He did," she laughed. "it took his father two years to persuade him to cut it."
"That's hilarious. " Nina said, "my uncle still rocks his braids and he's about as old as my dad" she shook her head.
"Some things aren't easy to let go," Jazmine joked.
"You got that right. His hair is down to his back now. Nina shook her head thinking about her uncle Riley and his notorious braids. "I can't see Sebastian with all that hair."
"His hair was as long as mine was when I was younger, but it was time to cut it. He didn't like getting it done and it was time for a change " Jazmine shook her head with laughter.
"I bet " Nina laughed. She turned the pages of the photo book enthusiastically when one fell on the floor. She picked it up and her eyes widened. It was a photo from Jazmine when she was a teenager. She wore a pink gown with her hair in two large puffy balls with gold earrings. Her eyes were closed while she looked like she was kissing someone.
There was a large hand wrapped around her small figure. She couldn't see the person's face, but she could slightly see their nose and the black sleeve from their arm. The photo was so ripped apart, the other half was a complete mystery. Jazmine's leg was raised like those romantic movies. She could tell by the expression on her face that the kiss was passionate.
Jazmine almost choked at the sight of the photograph. Her heart sunk to the floor. She had forgotten she had it.
"Look at you. Your hair is so cute here" Nina giggled, ignoring the fact that the picture was ripped. She wanted to ask who it was on the other side but she knew better that it was probably too personal. She handed the photo to Jazmine and saw that her eyes were teary.
"I remember that," she snorted a little. This was graduating day. We were set to go away go college together, " she smiled sadly. "We were so enthusiastic about finally living our lives on our own. We didn't realize that it would separate us forever. "
Nina stared at her remorsefully. She remembered their conversation in the kitchen about the love she had before Sebastian's father and she put two and two together. "Is that the man you told me about who was like my father?"
Jazmine nodded her head.
"What happened to him?"
She sighed sadly before responding. "Well... we had a huge disagreement and realized that it would impact our relationship. We agreed to put an end to it, however, I never wanted it to end," said Jazmine. "I only agreed to break up because I thought it was necessary at the time, but then I immediately regretted my decision. The next day, I walked into his dorm hoping to get back together, but when I got there, he was gone," Jazmine said briefly. She didn't like to discuss it because it always made her emotional.
Although she continued her life, the pain she felt when she thought about him never seemed to go away.
"I was so mad that I tore up our pictures. I tossed the other half into a fire pit that I made in my parents backyard " Jazmine confessed.
"Damn girl! You're a savage " Nina joked attempting to bring light to the situation.
Jazmine laughed hysterically. "I confess that it was childish of me, but I was only angry because it still hurt. It hurt because I knew he still had my heart and I wouldn't get it back."
"Have you tried to get in touch with him?" asked Nina.
"Oh no. He blocked me" She chuckled. "Then he left the state and I never saw or heard from him again. As much as I wanted to fight for us, I couldn't bare the pain I knew he would caused me. He didn't want me, and I needed to move on. " She admitted.
"But you never truly moved on have you?" Asked Nina.
"I tried not to dwell on the past. I went out with a few guys until I finally met Sebastian's dad. At that moment, I thought I was finally over it. " She shook her head. "but it was like he had marked me with his heart and no matter how much I loved Sebastian's dad, I couldn't love him the way he deserved."
"Because you were already in love someone else"
"Unfortunately."
"Wow.. That's sad.." Nina said softly.
"But it was centuries ago" Jazmine started shuffling the photos. 'I am pleased with my life now. I love being a single mom. I couldn't ask for more. I got everything I needed in life. Most of all. A handsome son who dating the most amazing, beautiful girl I ever met " Jazmine smiled at her.
Nina chuckled. "Thank you Jazmine. You're awesome," she says.
"Aw, don't make me cry," said Jazmine, taking her into her arms.
This time Nina hugged her back. She couldn't believe she only met her hours ago and she already felt she had a strong connection with her. They broke apart and Jazmine looked at her.
"Why don't we go downstairs? They should be arriving any minute now" Nina nodded her head.
As they made it downstairs, Jazmine ran into the kitchen to check the peach cobbler. It was an up-to-date version of her mom's recipe except it didn't look like vomit.
Jazmine chuckled, remembering The disgust look on Riley's face when her mom brought over her peach cobbler.
Where are they? Nina checked her phone to send a text message to Sebastian when suddenly the front door opened. .
His eyes sparkled with excitement as Sebastian entered with her father, who had a disgusted expression on his face. He was looking around at Christmas ornaments. She heard him scoffed and shook his head.
Sebastian grinned wider "Hey baby" Nina rushed to him. "It took you long enough," she murmured, giving him a kiss on the lips.
"I'm Sorry, but I'll make it up to you later" He teased.
She smacked his arm. "Boy, be quiet, my father is there," she muttered.
"Oh, he can't hear " Sebastian said, kissing her once more,
"I can hear it loud and clear," Huey said, Sebastian rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment. He chuckled. "I'm saying I have a surprise for her later"
Huey stared at him distinctly.
Nina chuckled. "You know I don't like surprises, baby"
Huey had a look on his face that said I told you. Sebastian chuckled nervously "I'll get mom, " he looked down at Nina who pointed. "Kitchen" She said. Sebastian grinned. "That woman stays in that kitchen," he said, shaking his head.
"For good reason" Nina called out. She then made her way to her father, who was relieved to see her. "Hey daddy, " she embraced him and in response he kissed her forehead lightly. "Sebastian is something, right?"
"Mhm.. I won't be staying long, " he announced which caused her to let out an exasperated sigh. He could smell peach cobbler in the oven. It reminded him of his mom would always make it coming home from school. The setting within the house was warm and comfy. The decor was very luxurious and enchanting complimenting the winter wonderland theme, the white and blue shimmering colors in the curtains, liners and warm white lighting.
A normal guest would find the home very comforting.. it reminded Huey of the Christmas song White Christmas and he absolutely hated it.
"Was it necessary to have a Christmas tree that big," He complained, referring to the huge Christmas tree that stood underneath a white fluffy rug that matched the white sofas. "Can you imagine the fire hazard," he said, even though the tree was actually fake.
Nina glanced up. "Dad, you said you'd behave," she warned.
"I said I would treat everyone cordially," he said. "His mother must be damn nut. All those crystal balls are giving me a migraine." He complained.
"Shush Dad!" Nina whispered. " Sebastian's mother is great. On top of that, I think you'll get along just fine. She made your favorite peach cobbler " She nodded.
"I don't eat anyone's peach cobbler," he says seriously. "The last white person that made that almost killed my brother "
Nina laughed at her dad foolishness. "Dad, come on!" She looked back. She overheard Sebastian's voice. She panicked. "Please dad, one hour and I promise you can go. We already offered you a suite at the Halton Hotel. That's about five miles away," she said.
"Why would you get me a room when I could easily go to your uncle Riley's house?" Huey exclaimed.
"Dad, Uncle Riley lives 20 miles away. Not to mention all those kids would drive you mad. We both know that you would prefer to stay in a luxury hotel," she says with a twinkling of an eye.
Huey's daughter knew him too well.
"Fine, but don't think you're off the hook from this stunt you pulled. When this night is over, we will have a long, serious discussion," he rebuked.
She laughed and shook her head. "Okay, Dad. Now he's coming with his mom. Do you mind being polite? ." She gave him a pleading look.
Huey sighed. " Let get this night over with" then he remembered he left something in the car. He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Fuck," he said, which caught Nina's eye.
"What's the matter?" she asked.
He sighed," I left the champagne in the car, " he dug in his suit pocket and he still had Sebastian's car keys.
Nina folded her arms and looked at him suspicious. "Don't tell me you're planning to bail out on me" she said.
"Relax, I'll be right back," he said.
"Okay, go quickly, please. They're coming, " she said.
Huey hurried to the car to retrieve the champagne. On his way back, He spotted a white mailbox which was labeled, J.D. His eyes widened and he remembered the resemblance of Sebastian's eyes with hers. The home environment which gave it a familiarity. Something struck him that he was closer to her. "It cannot be", he said, denying his initial thought. This was probably a coincidence, a wild idea.
Jazmine was removing the peach pie from the oven when Sebastian came in.
"What's cooking, good looking " Sebastian kissed his mom's cheek.
"Oh baby, I'm glad you made it safe. "She turned and embraced him. "How is Nina's old man?" she asked.
Sebastian made a grimace. "Eh, he's a piece of work, but we had an understanding so I think we're good" He said uncertainty. " I can tell he doesn't trust me"
"Well, darling, I told you that trust is earned, but not received. Just be your marvelous self and I'm sure he'll eventually love you as much as I do! " She pitched his cheek.
"Ma, not now. We have guest" He complained.
"I'm sorry. It's just that I missed my little boy," she said, mimicking a baby's voice.
He rolled his eyes. "Ma, they're expecting us, " he said eagerly. "On top of that, I'm really hungry."
"Alright, alright. I'm coming, " she said, taking off her apron. She washed her hands, dried them and applied moisturizing cream.
Sebastian shook his head. His mama was so extra.
"Okay, I'm all set," she said anxiously, she was nervous. She wasn't sure what to expect Nina's father. If he was anything like she described, she already knew she was in for a storm. Her only hope is he'd appreciated the hospitality.
Sebastian was worried, he knew his mother was nice, but if anybody pissed her off, she'd tear 'em apart. From meeting Mr. Freeman. He knew that the Freeman was not the most pleasant. He didn't want the night to ruin if their parents couldn't get along.
:
Nina was on edge. Jazmine was the nicest person she ever met and her dad is the opposite. She didn't know how it was going to go, but she only hopes he wouldn't embarrass her with his antics.
"Here they are," she whispered to herself as she saw Sebastian walking with his mama. Her dad had returned to the car because he had forgotten the champagne.
She tapped her leg, what was taking him so long she thought. She smiled as Jazmine and Sebastian approached her.
"Hey, where's your dad?" Sebastian asked.
"Oh, he left something in the car" She said. Jazmine nods in response. "Oh," Nina says, hearing him come in. "There he is; " she laughed nervously. Jazmine smiled as she awaited for him to walk in the room, but suddenly her smile faded.
She couldn't believe her own eyes, Her eyes widened and her lips parted in a state of shock. The moment Huey entered the room, his eyes landed on the woman he thought he'd never see again.
His eyebrows rose in shock and his heart beat rapidly, as he felt a feeling of confusion hitting him.
Nina looked at her father who was looking at Sebastian's mama like Donald Trump was re-elected.
"Dad, I want you to meet Sebastian's mother," she swallowed nervously, immediately looking at Jazmine who shared the same look as her dad.
"And Jazmine, this is my dad,". She exchanged looks with Sebastian, who was just as perplexed as she was about their parents' reaction to the encounter.
There was an uncomfortable silence, Huey and Jazmine never broke their gaze.
As Huey stared into the stunning eyes of Jazmine who had a haunting look on her face as if she was staring at a ghost. She looked so different from what he recalled. Yet She was still the most beautiful woman he had ever laid eyes on.
The look of innocence had faded from her bright eyes, but replaced with so much wisdom and strength. . Her hair was shorter, styled in natural curls. She looked so confident, and she had more sex appeal with the way her body was shaped. Her skin looked so radiant, and soft. He could see that she took very good care of herself by the way she was dressed so exquisitely and elegantly. . She looked so seductive in the dress she was wearing which hugged her curves perfectly.
Jazmine felt frozen in position looking into the eyes of the man she loved most. The man who broke her heart. He had changed so much, and he was more handsome than she remembered.
His appearance had enhanced over the years. His Afro was cut low and had a great beard, which complimented his defined jaw. He dressed Sophisticated, a sharp suit that was perfectly fitted. His height increased by an inch, as well as his chiselled muscles that made her want to drool. His captivating wine-colored eyes had darkened giving the color a richer saturation, and his ageless skin was absolutely flawless.
Huey eyes softened, he wanted more but to touch her. He wanted to hold her and tell her how much he had missed her, but he was in no position to do so for the fact that his daughter who was dating her son had no idea of their romantic history.
Jazmine wanted to run to him and pounce on him like the old days when they were in love, but she knew it would be highly inappropriate. In spite of his wife's death, he was still married. Above all, he was Nina's father. She knew Nina was still hurting from the death of her mother. She also knew Nina or Sebastian were not aware of the previous romance between them.
As much as she wanted to run to Huey's arms. Her first instinct was to protect her child. Sebastian was planning a big proposal for the woman he loves. She couldn't let anything ruin his moment.
She swallowed as held back her tears. She smiled brightly at Huey, who looked at her with so much passion. She extended her hand "It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Huey Freeman," she said softly.
Huey, who was taken back by her actions, hesitated at first, but then he caught on to what she was trying to do and decided he'd play along with the act. Sebastian and Nina watched anxiously as Huey reached for Jazmine's hand. As their hands touched, a spark went through their bodies like electricity and sudden flashbacks erupted into their minds.
