When I woke up, I was lying on a couch at the Konzern's German estate. Tsubasa dabbed at my forehead with a cool washcloth. Despite being horizontal, everything spun around me, and my vision was blurred. I tried blinking my eyes repeatedly in hopes of getting them to focus, but it didn't work. Finally, Tsubasa laid the washcloth over my forehead and eyes, clearly having noticed my attempts to blink away the haze.
"Basa..." I said, reaching up to take the washcloth off, but Tsubasa grabbed my hand and held on tight. I didn't need my sight to tell that he was clearly terrified of losing me again.
"Shh, everything's alright, Aki," Tsubasa whispered as he kissed my hand and gently brushed my hair away from my face. I was confused until I remembered what had happened.
"No, it's not Tsubasa. They know where we are…they were at the hospital…" I said, sitting up on the couch before doubling over from the pain that ripped through my right side. When I looked down, I saw that there was a stab wound about five inches deep and three inches long, and the crimson blood that was starting to stain the hem of my tank top and the crisp white bandages wrapped around my abdomen. I was in shock until Tsubasa pushed me back down onto the couch.
"Will you stop that? First, you rip open the gashes from this morning when you beat up a college student for not taking her job seriously, and then you get yourself stabbed by one of Galaxy Nexus' underlings, all the while not even feeling the pain because you were running on pure adrenaline. If Ada had waited until tomorrow to give you the painkillers for your arm, you might have been admitted to the trauma unit here in Germany," Tsubasa said, running his hand over his face. He was clearly tired and about ready to lose his mind. I propped myself up on my elbows and reached out to touch his cheek, only for Julian and Klaus to enter the room with Ada right behind them. The minute that Ada saw that I was awake, she was at my side, scolding me ruthlessly as if I wasn't in enough pain from sitting up once or the possibility of me pulling some of the stitches in my side.
"You are the most reckless person I know, Aki Hagane. If it weren't for your congenital insensitivity to pain, I would be very worried about you." Ada said, until I corrected her.
"Ada, I've told you it's not congenital insensitivity to pain but hypoesthesia; meaning I was born with the ability to feel pain, but as I grew up and went through Galaxy Nexus's training camps I lost the ability to feel most pain. It has to be pretty severe for me to feel the pain." I said letting Ada push me back down onto the couch. Julian and Klaus were looking at me with confusion while Tsubasa was shaking his head at me.
"Translation of what Aki just said, she can feel some pain but she has become so used to it that the pain receptors in her brain can't receive the signals. This is often confused for CIP which is a condition that a person is born with." Tsubasa explained to Julian and Klaus while Ada fussed over me. I didn't pull any of my stitches which is good, but then I heard the rules that Ada was enforcing. The biggest one being that I couldn't lift anything heavier than 2.3 kilograms. I was hoping that she was joking since I have a 12-year-old that loves to cuddle and be held while I sing to him.
"Ada, if that's a joke, it's not funny at all. You know I have a twelve-year-old who likes being held…" I said, which earned me a knock on the head and more scolding.
Ada spoke seriously, "I'm not joking, Aki. A stab wound to the abdomen is very serious, and you could have easily bled to death. So it's important that you don't do anything that could reopen the wound. You're turning nineteen tomorrow, so for once, can you just listen to me and do as you're told?" She finished before hugging me. I could tell that she had been worried; the shaking of her shoulders gave it away. I sighed and then gave in to what Ada was saying. After all, she was a doctor and knew what was best for me.
"Fine, I'll listen," I said just as Sakyo came running into the room, Yu and Chi-Yun right behind him. Anja and the rest of Team Wang Hu Zhong followed closely behind them. Sakyo would have just jumped right onto the couch on top of my stab wound if Tsubasa hadn't caught him and held on tight.
Sakyo kicked his legs and said, "Let me go...I want my Auntie Odette," as Tsubasa held him tightly to his chest.
"No can do, kid," Tsubasa said, "Your Auntie Odette was badly hurt and can't have her injuries jostled because you can't sit still and want to climb all over her…" He handed Sakyo back over to his mother, who was apologizing for her son's rude behavior. It was then that Yu looked over at where I was still lying and saw that I was wide awake. He was careful to not bump into my side when he gave me a hug.
"Thank you for waking me up, Mama," Yu whispered in my ear before kissing my cheek and then turning to leave the room. I watched confused as Yu left the room; he was acting strange until I heard Yu scolding Sakyo out in the hallway. He told him that he shouldn't be running inside because he could slip and fall, and then he would be in trouble because it was his job to make sure that he stayed safe while he was visiting. I looked between Julian and Tsubasa trying to figure out who had put that thought into Yu's head when Klaus cleared his throat the whole time holding up his hand.
"It was actually my idea for Yu to make sure that the little guy didn't get into any trouble. I wasn't going to scold him or anything, I just wanted to show him what it was like for you and Tsubasa when you acted out," Klaus said, looking away from me as he explained why he did it. I nodded my head before Tsubasa moved closer to me and kissed my forehead.
"I'm going to go keep an eye on them. Tsubasa, you keep an eye on this one, text me if she does something she shouldn't be." Ada said getting up from her spot and leaving the room pulling Julian and Klaus out with her. I was about to say something when Tsubasa laid his head on my lap clearly at his limit. I just sat there running my fingers through his hair listening to him sleep for half an hour before Ada came back into the room talking to Yu.
"So, Mom is going to be alright, but she just has to take it easy until you and Dr. Sato say otherwise?" Yu asked clearly worried about me. I was laughing softly while listening to the two of them.
"Yu, we both know that your mom is going to be back on her feet in at least two weeks, any more than that and she'll kill someone," Ada said, looking over the back of the couch at me while I stifled my laughter to avoid disturbing Yu and to prevent jostling my side too much.
"That's true, Mom is too stubborn for her own good, and she should be sleeping instead of watching us talk," Yu said, putting his hands behind his head before turning to look over the back of the couch and smiling at me.
"You both know me too well. As I'm not tired at all," I said pulling my hand out of Tsubasa's hair thinking that he was sleeping or that was before he sat up. He looked like he did most mornings before his coffee or this was before Tsubasa laid his head on my shoulder. Ada was watching from behind the couch clearly concerned at the way Tsubasa was acting.
Ada moved to get a better look at Tsubasa and asked, "Is he always like this?"
"Are you talking about before or after the Galaxy Nexus?" I asked, running my fingers through his bangs as he slept on my shoulder. I watched as Ada's eyes grew wide with shock at the fact that Tsubasa had been taken by the same people that took the two of us.
"Actually, it's pretty much the same either way that you look at it," Yu said, coming to stand next to me before he pushed Tsubasa's head off of my shoulder, so that he could take his spot. Tsubasa was glaring at Yu as he sat up. Ada was trying to stifle her laughter, while I was just shaking my head at their behavior. It was then that the maid entered the room pushing a wheelchair.
"Master Julian has asked me to inform you all that dinner is now being served. And if Ms. Hagane is feeling up to it, we have a vegetarian option for her." The maid spoke with her eyes closed the entire time. I quickly pulled the sheet covering my lower half away to reveal that I was still wearing my jeans. I quickly pulled my tank top down and pulled the sweater, which Tsubasa had most likely left on the back of the couch for me, over my head. I was on my feet in seconds with Ada shaking her head at the clear display of disobedience from me yet again.
Ada asked, rubbing her face with her hand. "Who said that Aki would be up and about by dinner time?"
"It was Aki. She told me that if there is a bet on how long it would take for Aki to get back on her feet for any reason, I am to put down for her 'by dinner time,'" Yu said taking my hand in his. He then led me towards the dining room where all of our friends Ada and Tsubasa were right behind us. When we entered, I could see that it was a much calmer environment than this morning. Yu led me over to the left side of Julian before pulling out the chair for me.
"Aki wins the bet," Ada said as she sat down between Dashan and Klaus. Across from Tsubasa, who took the seat next to me.
Chao-Xin shook his head and asked, "How is that even possible?"
"She literally can't feel pain, sometimes I wonder if Dr. Meyer is correct in saying that Aki has CIP," Tsubasa said as he leaned his chin on the palm of his hand, while his elbow rested on the edge of the table.
"While my mother did have CIP, but that's a condition that a person is born with. And almost everyone here has seen me in pain, when that sadistic person put my legs back into those leg braces…" I said reminding Tsubasa and the members of Team Wang Hu Zhong that they had seen me in pain before. The fact that all of their faces quickly lost color meant that they remembered what I was talking about.
"Yeah, that's right Aki was howling in pain that day," Dashan said from his seat across from me.
"That was not a pretty sight, but then again her legs have always been sensitive due to the multiple breaks her legs received while she was with Galaxy Nexus," Tsubasa said as we got into the topic of me not being able to feel pain. The whole time Ada was mentally taking notes about what was being said, trying to figure out if I did have Congenital insensitivity to pain or if I had Hypoesthesia. About halfway through dinner did the subject change to questions about Wales and Sophie and how their recovery might progress. With Julian asking questions of Tsubasa and Chao-Xin, with me adding input on their recovery plans.
"That reminds me; where are Yu, Chi-Yun, and Sakyo?" I asked after five minutes of silence, which would have been impossible with Yu and Sakyo in the room, seeing as they were balls of endless energy.
"They are in a different room so that those of us who can control our energy would have a peaceful dinner. But don't worry; the nanny that used to take care of me when I was that age is watching them." Julian said cutting up his main course which was steak for everyone but me and Anja. So, I wasn't the only person affected by the limited diet of only meat, but now that I think about it Anja had the second longest record of being with Galaxy Nexus.
"That reminds me Dr. Meyer why are you missing your right forefinger?" Julian asked not even looking up from his dinner plate. I bowed my head in shame at what had happened.
"The night that Anja and I escaped from the Galaxy Nexus with the help of Aki, they deemed me not worthy enough to be a Blader, so they cut off my right forefinger because it's one of the two fingers used to pull the ripcord to launch our Beys. I had been with them for two months; I was only twenty years old and had already been enrolled in premedical classes at the local university for three years. Ada said, using her hand as if she still had her right forefinger."
"What if someone only lasts a month with the Galaxy Nexus?" Julian asked as he put his silverware down.
"That is not a question that should be answered at the dinner table. And that would also be too traumatic for Aki and Anja who were often made to do the deed," Ada said before picking up her water glass. It was then that I noticed how badly her hand was shaking. I laid my fork and knife across my plate before dabbing at the corner of my mouth with the fabric napkin lying across my lap.
"What Galaxy Nexus would have done is first destroy the blader's Bey and blader's spirit. Before cutting off the fingers on their dominant hand, not just one like Ada but all five. They would then crush both hands by driving over them with a truck, so that they could never do anything after the recovery process. Most never survived the night due to the pain and the electric fences that Galaxy Nexus put them in. The pain would be so bad that the victims would throw themselves into the high voltage current, ending their lives…" I said, picking up my water glass and taking a small sip, trying to calm my stomach as I spoke about it. This was such a hard subject to talk about; then again, it might be the steak that both Tsubasa and Julian were eating. I was about to excuse myself when Sakyo and Yu entered the dining room, Chi-Yun and an elderly woman right behind them.
"Master Julian, I am going to take the children out to the garden to take a look at the stars," the elderly woman said before picking up Sakyo, who was currently sitting on his mother's lap.
"Thank you Nanny; Aki, Ms. Schneider I think it would be better if you went with the children out to the garden before getting them ready for bed." Julian said after watching us for a few seconds to see if there was a possibility that we could give him more information about Galaxy Nexus. I nodded my head before laying the cloth napkin next to my dinner plate and got up from my seat.
"Good night everyone," I said, taking Yu's hand in mine as we followed the nanny out to the back garden. As the children played a simple game of tag, the three of us sat on the bench under the apple tree.
"I can tell that you are Sakyo's mother, Ms. Schneider," the nanny said, turning to me. "But which one is yours, Ms.?"
"I am Yu's foster mother, and please just call me Aki," I said, watching as the elderly woman sneered at the word "foster".
"Yu was abandoned by his real parents when he was four years old on Christmas Day. And you have every right to look at me with disgust, but I will never be able to have children because the people who have been kidnapping bladers all over the world took that ability from me," I said, touching my stomach. Anja laid her hand on my shoulder before turning to the older woman with a glare.
"They made me have Sakyo, by forcing me to have sex with my little boy's father. They wanted to make the strongest Blader in the world by putting me with a man that doesn't even know he is a father. They actually wanted to use Aki because she is the strongest but she was only 12 years old so I was the next best option." Anja said before turning to watch the children. The fact Yu and Chi-Yun were acting their ages was a refreshing change of pace until Sakyo came running over to us with something in his hand.
"Mama look, I caught a lightning bug," Sakyo said before opening his hands to show us, only for the bug to fly away. Sakyo looked upset that the bug had gotten away from him, but at the same time, he was amazed by the flashing lights flying around us. It was a beautiful sight to the point that I almost didn't notice Tsubasa walking towards us while talking with Dashan and Chao-Xin.
"Yu, Chi-Yun, it's time to say goodnight to Sakyo and head inside," I said, standing up from my seat, Anja not that far behind me.
Yu ran over to me, pleading up at me with his big green eyes. "But Ki-Ki, we wanted to play some more," he said. I lifted one eyebrow before looking at my watch to see how much time he had left before bedtime. It was later than I thought.
"It's already past your bedtime, Yu," I said, crossing my arms over my chest.
"Ah, okay. Good night, Sakie and Ms. Schneider," Yu said, bowing his head to them before running towards Tsubasa, clearly trying to get him to overturn the fact that it was still bedtime.
"I never made Master Julian go to bed this early when he was Yu's age," the nanny said clearly not understanding that Yu had a hard time if his schedule got messed up even a little bit.
"While unlike Julian, Yu has a schedule that was created just for him, not by me or Tsubasa. The first therapist we saw had a lot of suggestions on how to structure his day. Yu may complain about it right now, but tomorrow he will be grateful that I said it was bedtime. Plus, it's getting pretty late for Sakyo to still be awake, considering he is only seven years old. Don't you agree, Anja?"
"Yes, it is way past Sakyo's bedtime too. I will see you tomorrow, Aki. Sakyo says goodnight to your aunt Odette," Anja said, wrapping her arms around me in a hug before turning to the elderly woman whose eyes had softened when she heard what we had to say about it being past the boy's bedtime. I was about to ask her why when Sakyo wrapped his arms around my waist.
"Goodnight Aunt Odette. See you tomorrow," Sakyo said before running to say goodnight to Yu who was sulking beside Tsubasa; clearly having been told that it was well past his bedtime. The two were happily chatting when Anja picked up Sakyo and carried him away. I slowly walked over to Yu and Tsubasa when the nanny grabbed my arm.
"Can I speak with you for a minute, Ms. Aki?" The nanny asked, her eyes clearly watching Yu and Tsubasa, who were talking about something.
"Yes, shall we head inside where we will be more comfortable?" I smiled at the elderly woman before helping her back into the manor, leading her up to the room where me and Tsubasa were staying. When I noticed Klaus and Julian approaching us.
"Oh Julian, Klaus, is there anything I can help you with?" I asked, turning towards them.
"Nanny, how were the boys at dinner?" Julian asked, clearly thinking up a reason to talk with the elderly woman.
"While Chi-Yun the oldest of the three seemed to miss eating with his friends, but once he got talking with Little Sakyo and Yu, he was content. Yu, who is the middle child was worried about Ms. Hagane here but he was good at hiding it from the youngest Sakyo. Sakyo was a ball of energy and I had to tell him several times to sit back down, but finally after Yu said something he calmed down and stayed in his seat." The elderly woman said giving Julian her report. The whole time Julian was nodding his head until she put her hand on his cheek.
The elderly woman asked, clapping her hands together, "How about we all sit down and have some tea?" She then led us to a different sitting room than the one I had woken up in just a few hours ago. A maid was setting out a white bone china tea pot and tea cups along with a plate of cookies. The elderly woman was talking softly with the maid, who had been setting up the tea pot, about something when another maid showed Tsubasa into the room.
"Okay, what did Yuu do this time?" I asked once the maids had left the room, my tea cup sitting firmly in my left hand.
"Oh no, it has nothing to do with Yu, it has to do with what you said Ms. Hagane. You actually reminded me of the one thing that a child always needs and that is a stable environment, so they can grow up to be responsible adults. Master Julian I want to apologize for never doing that for you, but at least you turned out alright Klaus." The elderly woman said before putting her hand on her cheek. I had to hold back my comment of Klaus being a total muscle buff.
"It wasn't your fault, Nanny," Julian said, setting his tea cup down on the coffee table before reaching out to take the elderly woman's hand into his. "In the Konzern family, it just wasn't allowed. We were expected to be the best of the best."
"I agree with Julian ma'am…if anyone should be sorry it should be Julian's family who put such unbelievable pressure on his shoulders. So, tell me nanny; how much of dinner did Yu actually eat?" I said before changing the subject before taking a sip of the bitter tea. I had set the cup down and was about to reach for the sugar when Tsubasa pulled it out of my reach.
"You won't sleep a wink tonight if I let you add sugar to your tea," Tsubasa said smiling at me before laughing and holding out a cookie.
"Luckily, this is a caffeine-free tea, so it shouldn't affect anyone's sleep tonight. Now, you asked about how much Yu actually ate at dinner, is it common for him not to eat much?" The nanny said, placing her cup down in front of her.
"Yu has picked up a few of our bad habits, one of them being that neither of us eats when we are worried about something. You mentioned that Yu was worried about me during dinner, that's why I asked." I said before breaking the cookie into smaller pieces.
"Ah so that's why you asked. That's a good thing that you know that Yu is always watching you and that your own bad habits might be transmitted to your child. He was mostly pushing his food around his plate but when Sakyo asked him why he was doing that he started to eat. He ate about half of his salad and three quarters of his main course before he just gave up eating." The nanny said before picking up a cookie and taking a bite of the soft dessert. I sighed at this information because it means that me and Tsubasa really need to take Yu to a therapist when we get back to Japan, or maybe even before then.
"I know what that sigh means," Tsubasa said as he set his tea cup down.
"I barely ate anything for breakfast while all you ever had was a cup of coffee, and we both missed lunch. For dinner, he was with Chi-Yun and Sakyo," I said thinking out loud not really paying attention to the gasp that the nanny gave me.
The nanny asked me, "How much do you normally eat for breakfast?"
"This morning I ate half of a bowl of white rice, but normally I eat about two pieces of toast and fruit. Yu and Tsubasa both eat meat, but I can't because of my own trauma," I said as I scratched at the bandages on my right forearm. That was before Tsubasa took my left hand in his. I looked up at him, confused until I saw the small scrapes of white bandages under my nails.
"Do you focus more on making sure that Yu and Tsubasa are eating healthy before you worry about yourself? If that isn't the case then what is the main thing that your diet revolves around?" Nanny asked trying to get me to think about my own health.
"Sorry I don't know because the first thing that comes to my mind is taking care of Yu and Tsubasa along with all of my patients. You see I am a trauma expert that works for the WBBA. Like I know that Wales is allergic to peanuts, and that he loves sweets, and Sophie is the opposite; she loves savory treats and isn't allergic to anything as far as I know of. As for Yu, he…" I said before Nanny cut me off.
"Aki Hagane, that is why Yu is worried about you. You don't even take care of yourself like you should. You look after so many different people that you don't even know the first thing about yourself. What kind of food do you like? Are you allergic to anything? What kind of snacks do you like?" The nanny said looking at me with disbelief, I couldn't understand what the problem was. I was looking around at the others to see that they were all staring at me in disbelief, while Tsubasa was shaking his head at me.
"And this isn't even the first time someone has brought these questions up." Tsubasa said letting his guard down long enough for me to take the sugar from him. I was able to put half a teaspoon of sugar in my tea before Tsubasa took it away from me again. Even with that small amount of sugar my tea tasted better.
"Half a teaspoon isn't going to make me bounce off the walls in a sugar high. I like sweets like chocolate, or dried fruits. I get violently sick when I eat meat, technically I can't even stand the smell of meat. I know that I am about the same weight as Kenta and Yu but that can't be helped seeing as my diet consists of veggies and fruits, I eat beans and nuts along with cheese to make up my protein." I said taking a sip of my tea before taking a bite of the cookie Tsubasa had handed me. I would have said something else if Tsubasa hadn't put the back of his hand to my forehead, trying to judge if I had a fever.
"Are you feeling all right, Aki?" Tsubasa asked, looking at me confused.
"I feel fine now that I was able to put some sugar in my tea," I said, closing my eyes before taking another sip of my tea. After that, no one said anything until Nanny put her cup down.
"Aki, I will inform the chef to take extra care to make sure that they pay attention to your meals so that you can focus on your patients and Yu." Nanny said before getting up. That was until Tsubasa pulled out my notebook from the nutritionist that I had been seeing in Japan for the last year.
"If you could please pass this on to the chefs, this will help them. I also put some of her favorite recipes in here, which I know are very healthy but also very tasty," Tsubasa said, handing over the medium-sized blue notebook. The nanny looked confused as to why Tsubasa was carrying it.
"It also has my daily calorie intake written down for the last year. Did you happen to write down the amount I took in today?" I asked before setting my now empty teacup down on the coffee table and turning to look at Tsubasa who was writing something down in the notebook.
"Just finished. Seeing as tea time is over why don't we all head off to bed? Aki, shall we?" Tsubasa said before holding the notebook out to the nanny before standing up and holding his hand for me to take. I placed my hand in his before bowing to Julian and Klaus.
"Goodnight Julian, Klaus. I hope you have a pleasant night," I said before letting Tsubasa lead me to the room that we were staying in. We were halfway up the stairs when Chi-Yun came running towards us, clearly panicked.
"Aki, Tsubasa something is wrong with Yu." Chi-Yun said stumbling and most likely would have fallen down the stairs if Tsubasa hadn't caught him. At this I rushed up the stairs and into their room only to find Yu in the corner of the closet curled up crying.
"Sweetie, what's the matter?" I asked as I knelt down in front of him.
"Mama got hurt and I almost lost her today…Galaxy Nexus they could have killed her, if it wasn't for the tai-chi that I asked Chao-Xin to teach her so that she would have something to protect herself. And from what Julian told me, mama had taken the assailant down, but because of her CIP she couldn't tell that she had been stabbed. I should have insisted on going with mama and Julian." Yu said just as the nanny and Tsubasa entered the room. I sigh before sitting down next to Yu in the closet. I quickly pull Yu closer to me, before slowly starting to sing.
"Hush, little baby, don't
say a word,
mama's gonna buy you
a mockingbird.
If that Mockingbird don't
Sing,
Mama's gonna buy you
A diamond ring.
If that Diamond ring
Turns to brass
Mama's gonna buy you
A looking glass.
If that looking glass gets broke,
Mama's gonna buy you
A Billy-goat
If that Billy-goat won't pull
Mama's gonna buy you
A cart and bull.
If that cart and bull turns over,
Mama's gonna buy you
A dog named Rover.
If that Dog named Rover won't bark
Mama's gonna buy you
A horse and cart.
If that horse and cart falls down,
You'll still be the
Sweetest little baby in town," I sang, rocking the two of us from left to right, trying to ignore the pain ripping up my right side. Tsubasa waited until Yu had fallen asleep before coming forward and lifting the sleeping boy into his arms. I watched as Tsubasa put Yu back onto his side of the bed before turning to help me back onto my feet.
"I know this would happen; Yu often ends up like this when he worries about something…" I said shaking my head at my own stupidity, I should have been there to tuck Yu into bed instead of having tea with Julian and the others. Or that was until Tsubasa pulled me into a hug.
"You couldn't have stopped this, because just like his mother, he hides everything inside until he gets so stressed out that he can't handle it," Tsubasa said, leading me out of their room and into the one we were using at the end of the hallway where the nanny was waiting for us. She bowed her head to us before walking away. I had a hard time sleeping because I was too wound up, and Tsubasa gave me a "I told you not to add sugar" look before rolling his eyes at me and going back to work on some paperwork that the WBBA required.
