As the morning light began to stream in Bella woke up to find that the pounding in her head had returned with a dreadful vengeance and this time it was joined by her lungs that had begun burning. She felt as if she had been run over by a bus only for it to reverse to finish the job.
Groaning in an effort to get up she looked over to the brightly illuminated numbers on her alarm clock and noticed it was only 6 o'clock in the morning meaning school would be starting in 2 hours. As she tried to stand she could feel a crashing wave of dizziness rush over her and causing her to fall back onto the bed with a dull thud. With a growing sense of horror, she realised that it was not likely she would be getting into school today.
Deciding to rest her eyes for a moment longer in an attempt to calm her dizziness while she decided on a course of action for the day. Should she try and push through and not miss school, no, because Alice was sure to force her to the nurse who would in turn call her parents to take her to the doctor. On the other hand, if she stayed home Alice was certain to try and force her to the doctor herself.
In the end, it was really two things that made up her mind, first the sound of her phone starting to ring from where it was charging on her desk. Letting out a groan as she sat up she made her way to the screaming device just as it stopped ringing. Before she could redial the number a wave of nausea over to her causing her to violently empty the contents of her stomach, eyes watering as she heaved.
It seemed to go on forever but just as soon as it ended her phone began to ring anew sitting shakily down on her desk chair she pressed to accept the call.
"Hello?" she said voice croaking from the heaving and not sure who would be phoning at this time of the morning
"Bella you sound terrible!" Alice exclaimed loudly the worry filling each word.
"Thanks, Alice, that makes me feel all better" she snarked dryly back not really feeling in the mood to talk when she was feeling quite this bad.
"Bella please tell me you are going to the doctor today" Alice questioned disapprovingly
"Well Alice to be honest I don't think I am in any condition to drive today, and my parents are still away so I am just going to stay in bed and rest until they are home and see how I am then okay? " She said trying to sound as calm and convincing as possible hoping that if she could drag it out long enough she would be well enough no one would ask any more questions.
"No Bella, it is not okay! if you need a ride I will take you but you are going to go to the doctor, whether you want to or not" She argued displeased at Bella's lack of care for herself.
"Come on Ally please I really don't want to go to the doctor right now I just want to sleep; I mean it, please?" She begged while moving over to her bed to lie down.
"No, I am sorry Bella but I already told you yesterday that if you weren't better you would be going to the doctor and if you do not agree to go there this morning I will call your parents myself so they can make you go, I don't care if you get angry with me" she threatened and Bella couldn't help but picture her saying this with a huge pout on her face.
Realising quickly that Alice was serious she knew she really had no choice but to give in if she didn't want to call her parents home early in a panic. "Okay, fine Alice you win, but I will need to take you up on your offer if it still stands could you please give me a ride to the doctor?" she asked tiredly she already felt done with today and just wanted it to be over already.
"Of course Bella I definitely can, when I put down I will call the school and let Mrs. Cope know you won't be in and that I will be late or may need to leave early to give you a lift depending on when the appointment is; all you need to do is call and get an appointment time and I will make a plan around you," she says kindly making Bella feel so grateful to have such wonderful friends around her.
"Okay Alice then I will make the appointment and call you back with the time but only if you are sure your parents will not mind? " she questioned in worry, the last thing she wanted was for Alice to get in trouble for helping her.
"I am sure they will be fine with it, my parents adore you Bella" she reassured, and to her credit, Bella had to agree by all accounts Alice's parents did seem to like her well enough though Bella suspected this was more to do with her being Alice's first friend in forks rather than who she was as a person.
"Okay then, I will phone you back in ten minutes with the time of the appointment thank you so much," She said gratefully.
"Okay don't forget to call with the time I will go talk to my parents to warn them about the plan for today, goodbye talk to you soon," she says
"Goodbye Ally," she said as she hung up the phone quickly searching for the doctor's reception number online as soon as the line had disconnected.
The number was on the hospital website which Bella had suspected, she had never called the doctor for herself before and it had been many years since she had gone but living in a small town normally meant everything being in one place, and in this case that meant all doctors worked out of the same hospital.
The website did however highlight that all general bookings could only be made after 8 am, at that she let out a disappointed sigh knowing that she was going to have to wait it out. Setting a quick alarm for 8 she lay back down and allowed her mind to wander.
It only felt like a few minutes the alarm was blaring once again with her rushing to silence it.
Getting up the number she had found earlier she quickly hit dial. The dial tone of the hospital seemed to mock her with its overly friendly tune that burrowed deep into her already sore head.
"Good morning, Forks General Hospital this is Stephanie speaking how may I help you?" the receptionist greeted sounding bored as she waited on the reply.
"Hello this is Isabella Swan and I would like an appointment with Dr. Brent please," She asked naming the last doctor her mom had taken her to see who signed off on her vaccine exemption certificate for school.
"Alright just a moment," the receptionist said putting her on hold with the dreadful music again. The minutes seemed to drag on and by the time five had passed Bella was beginning to feel worried that something was wrong.
Suddenly she heard a click as the hold music cut off.
"Hi, Isabella are you still there?" The receptionist questioned.
"Yes, I am" Bella quickly replied waiting for her next response.
"I am afraid that Dr Brent is out today but fortunately Dr Cullen is in, would you be okay if we switched your appointment over to him to get you seen a bit quicker instead?" she asked.
"That would be fine what time would the appointment be?" I question her.
"At nine am if that is possible," she asks
"That is great thank you" she thanked before going to hang up.
"Oh, just one thing before you go Isabella I see on your paperwork that you are not an intended mate but before anyone goes to Dr Cullen they ask we double check. You are not a mate are you?" The receptionist rushes to ask while whispering as if she were asking a very private question.
"No I am not" she reassured in confusion wondering why someone's mate status would need to be declared for the doctor.
"All right perfect we will see you at nine then goodbye"
"Goodbye thank you for your help." She said hanging up the phone and moving over to message Alice the time the receptionist had given.
Alice sent back a thumbs up and three hearts so Bella had to assume she was okay with picking her up at that time.
Knowing she only had a few minutes to get ready she began to slowly push herself up while doing her best to fight back the dizziness she was feeling and get ready for Alice to arrive.
The lights in the bathroom hurt her eyes pulling on them and worsening her headache to the point where she was ready to vomit. She quickly got through brushing her teeth and putting on a loose-fitting hoodie and some tracksuit trousers.
The sound of a car pulling up in the driveway letting her know her time to get ready was almost up and that Alice had arrived.
" Hey Bells I am here, where are you?" she called out with a questioning tone.
"I'm up here Alice" she shouted out her voice cracking halfway through as she did her best to brush through her tangled mess of hair.
Soft footsteps could be heard walking up the stairs followed quickly by the sight of her friend entering her room, she scanned around the room before her eyes landed on Bella in the bathroom.
"Sheesh, Bells you look like you are dying," she remarked not fully joking as the worry in her voice gave her away.
"I feel like it too Ally but at least the doc should be able to fix me up right?"
"That's true; in fact let's get you there right now, I don't want you waiting any longer" she commands while grabbing the sickly girl by the arm in an iron grip and leading her down the stairs.
Bella stopped to lock the door on her way out, noticing Alice had used the spare key from under the mat when she quickly put it back into its hiding place, Before following her to her car.
The two girls rode in almost absolute silence with Bella nodding off every few seconds only to be woken by any bump or turn they encountered. It was not long until they arrived at the hospital.
Alice drove right up to the door so Bella wouldn't have to walk far and could go and get signed in while she parked the car.
As she was walking up to the reception desk and the sterile smell of the hospital did not do much to calm her nausea. The lady sitting at the desk looked her up and down as she got near and quickly ended her phone call and put the phone back into its stand.
"Hello, I am here for my appointment with Dr. Cullen," Bella said politely; trying not to convey her nerves in front of the receptionist.
"Alright honey, please sit in the waiting area and fill this out while you wait, Dr. Cullen will see you in just a few minutes," she said kindly while handing her a clipboard requesting all of her medical data.
Bella walked over to the seats and sat down before reading over the sheet, feeling a new wave of nerves crash over her as she looked down at the questions she realised she did not know the answers to most like her vaccination dates, date of last checkup, medical allergies or even social security number. Doing her best to fill them in but being forced to leave a good deal of them blank she hoped her answers would suffice enough for her to be seen today.
The sound of the doors opening alerted her to Alice's entry just as the loud beep signaling the intercom played.
"Isabella Swan to room three" announces a voice from the intercom to which Alice waved her forward getting her to walk forward in front of the correct door before shooting her a thumbs up and taking a seat in the waiting room.
Bella took a deep breath and put her hand on the handle before pushing down and heading inside.
