James!" He said, "Thank God, you are here…."

He had thought the other Marauders to be weak. Because they had chosen friends over power, they had chosen good over evil. They had chosen love. He thought James would weaken at the sight of his old friend. But, James's face was stone. He came towards Peter Pettigrew and snatched his wand from his hand. In the deep animalistic instinct to protect his home and his blood, he forgot he knew magic. His own wand was lying on the floor, he punched Peter in his face and Lily thought she saw a couple of teeth fall from Pettigrew's mouth. James threw another punch and another till Peter's whole face was messed up and covered in blood. After a few moments, he fell to the ground. James kicked him and when his legs got tired, he punched him more. Peter was unconscious when James dragged him with one hand and threw him out of his house.

He came back and sat down on the sofa, his hands covered in the blood of his former friend. He held his head in hands, Lily came towards him, holding Hazel in her arms.

"James…."

He didn't look at her. He knew what she was going to ask.

"Why?" Lily wasn't shocked at the blood on his hands. James had confessed of murdering several Death Eaters…..he avoided it but sometimes he had to do what he had to do. Sometimes, he had no other way out.

"He was going to……" She started to speak, but she couldn't finish her sentence. Maybe, it was too painful…..or maybe, she saw James's face.

"Not like that, Lily." He said, shaking his head. "You can't use that spell…" He stood up, he wanted to hold his daughter, he wanted to smell her hair. But, he didn't want blood on her soft skin.

"Even if someone is trying to kill you?" Lily demanded. "Kill us?"

"I wouldn't even use it on Snape." James turned back.

His eyes met hers. She didn't know what to say. She had her struggles in this world. But, she didn't know the demons James fought with everyday. He had seen the betrayal she never had. He had seen the losses she never had. He was more scared than she was. He was more careful than she was.

When he came back, he took Hazel in his arms and Lily left because Remus needed her.

After Lily left. James packed up all the baby stuff with a swift wave of a wand. He, then, cut up all his daughter's hair and made it short and spiky like his own. He changed the color of her hair from soft brown to black. And, her gray eyes to green ones. Then, he stood on his knees.

"Hey, little girl. My Hazey." He kissed her forehead, "My beautiful daughter……Now, listen to Daddy."

Tears started to form in his eyes.

"Okay? I am going to take you away, far far away. It is dangerous here. Now, you will be alone. You will be brave, won't you?"

The baby cooed softly.

"But, when I make this place safe for my little princess, then I shall bring you back."

Tears rolled down his cheeks, but he didn't care. He hugged his daughter who had no idea what was going on and disappeared into thin air along with her.

When she came back at dawn, all the baby stuff was gone from the house. The crib was empty. The baby was gone. Only James was standing in the backyard, with a cigarette in his hands. He hardly smoked.

"James…" She shouted, running after him, "James…Hazel…Hazel…She's gone."

"I know." James's face was red but his voice was oddly calm, he put out the cigarette.

"Where is she?" Lily asked.

"Away," James replied. "Far far away."

"What?" Lily whispered. "Oh, what did you do, James?"

"She is gone. And, I am not telling you where she is."

Only magic could be traced and there were millions of underage kids in the United States and James had used such spells that even if Lily spent her entire life looking for her, she wouldn't find her.

"James…"

"It's safe for her this way. And for us." He turned towards her, taking her hands in own. "She will stay there till the war is over and if we die she still would have a good life."

"You can't do this."

"I did already." He was protecting her from it all. But, she didn't understand it. She couldn't.

"James, she was my daughter." Lily snatched her hands away from him, "You took my daughter."

"Is." James headed out.

"What?" Lily didn't even realize she used past tense for her very alive daughter.

"She is your daughter." He said, his face had a hard expression on it. "Hazel isn't dead yet."

He disapparated away. She would hate him. He knew that when he took this step. But, he had been hated by Lily for a long time, he could bear the hate. What he couldn't bear was another Potter girl, another person he loved to be a victim of this war.

"JAMES!" Lily screamed as her knees felt weak. She fell down on the ground. She felt as if someone ripped her heart out.

Lily Evans walked around the room, thinking about all the horrible things she would say to him. She thought about leaving. If she started now…..perhaps, she would find her. She could take her girl away to a small village and live away for the rest of her life. But, even in her anger, she couldn't accept living away from him. But, she kept on imaging ways to punish him or persuade him to bring the baby back. But, her plans remained unsuccessful because she waited all day for him to come back, only to receive the news at night that James Potter had lost contact with the Order and was no longer traceable.
