"Who are you and what have you done with Fujimaru Ritsuka?"
"...who?" Kazuha initially had no idea who the Servant was talking to but after a second of thinking, it was obvious who he was referring to. "Do you mean the one this body belongs to?"
The Servant continued glaring at him in a way that made Kazuha think that was his default expression. It was clear he was not going to say anything before Kazuha explains himself.
"I do not know happened to his consciousness but I awoke this morning in his body," Kazuha explained, "I also have no clue what caused this nor how to fix it. Up till you mentioned his name, I was not even aware of who is the owner of this body."
"…Your name."
"Ah, I apologise. My name is Kaedehara Kazuha," he introduced himself with a friendly smile… which did not work on the Servant. His frown did not disappear as he continued his interrogation.
"Where is your body now?"
"Huh?"
"Your body," the Servant repeated. "I do not sense his mind anymore. If we assume yours did not outright replace his, he should be in your body. Now. Where. Is. Your. Body?"
Despite the fury dropping through the Servant's voice, Kazuha was not intimidated in the slightest. Especially since it was clear this anger was born of worry for Fujimaru Ritsuka. "Hmm… We were going to enter port come morning when I went to sleep. He should not be in any trouble." His answer was satisfying enough for the Servant, at least Kazuha believed so.
"…So you are from a Singularity." The Servant concluded, confusing Kazuha. He heard the term tossed around here and there but did not know what it meant. "There isn't a word of one being detected yet but this has happened before."
"Er… can you please explain what you meant by that?"
"Be grateful. I do not believe you are lying but—" his stare became more intense. "—if I learn you are not who you say you are and are responsible for whatever it is that happened to Fujimaru Ritsuka, you will burn— and I will take full pleasure in doing so. That, of course, is also assuming none of the others get their hands on you. Is that understood?"
The Servant's threat, while it didn't matter as Kazuha was being truthful, got through crystal clear. "Yes, I understand."
"Then sleep," the Servant ordered. "We'll learn more in the morning." Right before Kazuha's eyes, he disappeared, leaving the displaced Inazuman confused.
'I didn't even get his name.' That, in his eyes, was pretty rude too— threatening someone and then disappearing like that without even introducing himself. At least he proved he was loyal to whoever this Fujimaru Ritsuka was. Right now, though, his eyelids felt heavier and he let out a yawn. 'I better take his advice.'
Taking off his attire and neatly folding it, Kazuha laid down and closed his eyes.
When Kazuha woke up, it was not to the grey ceiling he dreaded but the more familiar wooden one. He rubbed his eyes to make sure he was seeing straight and, after making sure he was, let out a relieved sigh. 'It must have been a dream…'
That place, Chaldea, was too fantastical to truly exist. To dream of such a place and get his mind swapped with another person must have been a result of reading a light novel from his homeland. Yeah… that must have been it…
Getting out of his hammock, Kazuha went over to dress himself for the day. However, he immediately noticed the sealed letting sitting atop his clothes, which additionally were not as neatly folded as it usually was. He took the letter and opened it.
Dear Kazuha,
I hope this letter finds you well. Your last letter worried me—
The letter went on about how the writer was anxious about Kazuha's condition following his brief encounter before going on to tell him about their latest activities— i.e. what sort of troubles they got caught in since the last letter —and that they planned to finally enter Fontaine soon. Even without reading the signature at the end, Kazuha already knew who it was and wished the Traveler luck in their future adventures.
A part of Kazuha knew that there was something off but couldn't quite place his finger on it; he still felt a bit groggy from waking up. He was sure it'd hit him later though and quickly prepared himself for the day. Exiting his room and going above deck, Kazuha took in the familiar salty air he had grown accustomed to after living on Beidou's ship for so long.
'How long will it be before we reach the Harbor?' He walked over to the side and peeked out towards the bow to see… nothing? That was odd. They should've been at least close enough to see the shore already. He glanced back, if unconsciously, and was further baffled by what he saw: Liyue Harbor getting smaller and more distant as they sailed away.
'What?' No… it couldn't have been… 'Where's Captain Beidou?'
Kazuha rushed over to the wheel of the ship to find who he was looking for. "Yo! Morning sleepy-head!" She greeted him as cheerily as usual. "I see you're awake enough to tie your hair today."
…Ah. So yesterday he… Was that a good thing or a bad thing? "Captain, there is something I must tell you."
When Ritsuka woke up, it was not to the wooden boards he might have been expecting or even his bedroom ceiling. Instead, it was to the face of the Count of Monte Cristo looking down on him.
"Ur… morning? Do I want to know why you're watching me sleep?" It was usually one of the others who did that. The Count preferred to sit in the back of his mind for the most part.
"So it's really you, Master." That line was all Ritsuka needed to know that dream was not really a dream.
He sat up as the Count stepped back before the former asked him, "Did anything bad happen yesterday that I should be aware of?" To be truthful, Ritsuka was worried more for Kazuha's sake than his Servants. They could handle themselves if it turned out Kazuha had malicious intentions (although he doubted it), it was Kazuha who would most likely not survive being discovered, especially if it were the more… unhinged..
Servants.
"If you are wondering about the individual who was posing as you the entire day, take solace in the fact he mimicked you well enough that none of the others noticed," the Count answered him. "But had he continued living in your body for today, not even the clairvoyants could foresee what could happen to him."
That was comforting… maybe. "So was it just you who figured it out?"
"That, I cannot say. There might have been others who wanted to wait and see first before doing anything. I was simply the one who could not and would not wait any longer than I already did."
"I see. Well, thank you for not immolating him."
"I did not hold back because I believed he was being truthful with me. I held back because I'd rather not hurt your body until I learned what was happening," the Count spat out.
"Thanks anyway, I guess…"
"Did you learn of anything while in this… Kaedahara Kazuha's body? He claimed not to know how or why he was in yours."
Ritsuka shook his head. "No, I'm just as in the dark as you and he are. At least not enough to have a working theory." He still did not know what this "Abyss Lector" not-Artoria mentioned was. Maybe it was a clue; it could also just be an unusual but no less natural part of Kazuha's world. "What was he like anyway? I don't really know what he was like; it wasn't like everyone there was going to talk about him when I was wearing his face."
"That man was… unfailingly nice," the Count answered after a moment. "He was in an unknown place without anything or anyone to guide him yet he never failed to be kind and courteous to anyone here. He did it without any intention of fooling us into believing him to be you. He was not even aware of your name until I confronted him.
'So just as I assumed then…' That was relieving. "I see, that's good. Did anything happen while I was gone?"
The Count did not answer and simply vanished, basically telling Ritsuka to figure out the rest himself. In any case, their body-swapping adventure has seemingly come to an end and they can pick up the pieces. Ritsuka had the feeling Kazuha's reputation might be a bit tarnished by his actions, however, and apologised to the wanderer again.
Weeks passed and nothing happened… well, besides the standard chaos that was constant in Chaldea. It took Ritsuka a bit to get a solid picture of what Kazuha did in his body but was relieved to know nothing bad happened; he did have to question why Kazuha was willing to dress up and chase Jason around the simulator though.
He also got some odd comments and knowing smirks from a few Servants like Merlin; evidently, they were the few who knew about the whole incident.
Regardless, Ritsuka continued his day-to-day activities as normal— dealing with arguing Servants, farming materials, and hanging out whenever he have the time. Then one day…
"…Crap." He was once again not in his bed and his ceiling was a dark brown instead of plain grey. There was no doubt what has happened again. Now, if he could only recall where they were sailing to last time…
A/N: You didn't think that the antics are over, did you? I just wanted to skip ahead to Ritsuka in Inazuma so a temporary return to normal was in order. There was no way I could write weeks in-universe passing for Ritsuka without making it boring since he'd be stuck on a ship the entire time. So small timeskip was in order; now he can ruin Kazuha's reputation in his homeland!
Should I have a companion hanging around with him? If so, who? I'm leaning towards Kirara since they don't really know each other that well.
Next chapter, as mentioned, Ritsuka gets chased by ronins and struck by lightning while Kazuha in despair of being back in Chaldea!
