The toys back in Scott's room were surfing through each channel to find the commercial that would hopefully reveal the location of the store. They had been searching for hours taking turns on the remote and the sun was setting on the horizon.
"Ugh, it's been hours! Is it ever gonna show up?" Rouge complained.
"Just keep looking!" Tails ordered.
"At this rate, we'll never find-" Knuckles tried to say before getting cut off by a very familiar commercial.
"Hey, kids! It's Kevin, from Kev's Figures! The best action figure store in town!"
"There it is!" Amy beamed.
"We've got all kinds of figures! Just head down highway 98 and look for the giant sign!"
"Write this down, QUICK!" Knuckles ordered.
Everyone scrambled to find anything they could use to write with, but only found sticky notes and a nearly used up pencil. It was enough to get the general direction down and Knuckles finished writing down the road map. Knuckles took the map and rolled it up for safekeeping, but now he needed to talk to the others about what next.
"Alright, we have everything we need."
"What are we waiting for, then? Let's go save Sonic!" Tails exclaimed.
"Hold on," Tikal intervened. "It's dangerous out there, how could you get to the store safely?"
"She's right, Tails. This is no easy task." Knuckles added.
"I'll do whatever it takes." Tails said confidently.
Knuckles didn't really want Tails to come along, but he knows that even if he objected, Tails would still go. Amy wanted to come too, so he let it go. Surprisingly, Shadow decided to join. Even though he despised Sonic, nothing would be the same without him and he did almost save him the first time. Maybe he's doing this to redeem himself from his failure. Everyone was about to jump down from the window when Mighty, who was being supported by Ray and Chaos, called out to the others.
"Knuckles, you gotta save Sonic." he pleaded.
"We'll do our best, stay here and relax."
"Don't talk to any toy you don't know, Knuckles." Tikal warned.
Knuckles nodded and led the others down the pipe to the ground. They walked down the driveway and started their journey.
Back at the apartment, Sonic was sitting by the tv with his siblings watching another episode nearing its end. Aleena was with them on another table next to them, watching the episode as well. The episode in question was something about Sonic and Manic trapped in virtual reality, but are saved at the end of the episode. The ending theme started to play and Sonic was just excited to see the next one, but everyone else gave depressing looks.
"Alright! Next episode!" Sonic cheered, but when Sonia shut the tv off, he jumped up with irritation.
"Hey! Why did you do that? I wanna know what happens next!"
"That's it…" Aleena said.
"What?"
"The show was canceled after that." she said with despair.
"But- But what about us? And the others? I mean it was weird here and there, but the songs, the plot, it was good! Why cancel it?"
"Of course you would like it, you star in it!" Sleet barked.
"One word, Sonic… Ratings…" Sonia answered. "We didn't get as much of an audience the producers hoped to get."
"And we got completely sidelined by another show that was literally labeled with your name, bro." Manic added.
"Then, they changed everyone's design and basically removed us entirely…" Aleena whispered.
Sonic was heartbroken, how could he forget about them so easily and they were suffering while he had everything. He felt slightly responsible.
"But now, we're together again and we can finally be a family!" Sonia cheered.
"And now, it's off to the museum!" Manic said.
"Museum? What museum?" Sonic questioned.
"'The Toys Of The Past Museum' in Tokyo." Robotnik answered.
"Uh, that's in Japan, right?" Dingo asked before getting elbowed by Sleet.
"Japan?!" Sonic screamed, "No no no, I can't go to Japan!"
"What do you mean?" Sonia asked.
"I have to get back home to my owner, Scott!"
Sonia gasped with horror. Manic froze in place and stuttered,
"You still have an owner?"
"Oh my goodness…" Aleena muttered.
Sonia started to slightly panic and begin to hyperventilate. She was clearly going into distress.
"No, not again… I can't do storage again! I just can't! It's so cramped!" She screamed.
"Sonia-" Aleena soothed.
"I won't go back in the dark!" She yelled as she clinged to Aleena's box.
Sonic froze this time, the very mention of storage made him remember what he tried so hard to forget, but he needed to stay strong and appear like he didn't shiver.
"What's the matter?" He asked before looking at his mother with another question, "What's wrong with her?"
"We've been in storage for a very long time, waiting for you." She replied.
"Me? Why me?"
"They're only interested in the collection if you're with us, dude. Without you, we're put back in the box." Manic answered.
His guilt just tripled. They are going through what he went through years ago, but way worse and he was the reason why! He stopped focusing on the guilt once Sonia piped up.
"It's not fair! How could you do this!"
"Look, I'm sorry, but this is just a big mistake! You see, I was in this yard sale-"
"Yard sale?" Robotnik interrupted, "Now, why were you in a yard sale if you have an owner?"
"I wasn't really supposed to be there, I was trying to-" Sonic was interrupted again, but by Sleet this time.
"Sounds like his owner threw him away."
"No! It's not like that, ok? And I'm not going to any museum!"
"Well, I'm not going back into storage!" Sonia yelled.
A loud bang was heard from beyond the doors, everyone turned to the door in shock as Aleena gasped at the realization.
"Kevin's coming!" She looked back at Sonia who was hesitating to jump back into the box below them. Robotnik, Sleet, and Dingo all jumped back in the box while Sonia whimpered and backed away from the edge, but Manic stopped her and Aleena talked to her.
"Sonia, you have to jump. We're right behind you."
"But, mom!"
"I promise you will come out of the box, go!"
"But- But-"
"No time!" Manic scream as he shoved her off, she squealed from the unexpected push and went quiet after landing inside. Aleena gave a disapproving look towards her youngest, green son leaving Manic only giving a shrug with a smile.
"Sorry." He said.
Before anything else happened, he pushed Aleena off as well and jumped into the box. Sonic ran over to the glass case and shut the door just before Kevin returned. Kevin walked around before looking at the glass case where he left Sonic. He smiled, but that smile rubbed Sonic the wrong way. Kevin walked up to the box the other toys jumped into and pulled them out one by one until they were all next to each other. Kevin gave a chuckle as he placed everyone on their own pedestals next to Sonic and left the room once more. The room was silent and the loud footsteps outside faded away.
"I told you, Sonia." Aleena said in relief.
"Whatever…" Sonia grunted.
Sonic chuckled a bit, but that caused Sonia to look away from everyone as she stood there silently. His demeanor changed instantly and frowned. Something tells him this is going to be a long night.
It was dark out in the streets, the only light from the light posts illuminated the sidewalk. Then, a small, black and red figure stepped out of the dark and ran to the mailbox a few feet away. He stopped as he watched his group follow suit. Tails was the last to run behind Knuckles and Amy, but he tripped on the ground and fell. Amy helped him back up and reached the mailbox.
"How much farther, Shadow?" She asked.
Shadow pulled out the map Knuckles made and used it to find their location and how much farther they needed to travel.
"We are about 19 blocks out."
"19?! We're that far?" Amy groaned.
"Are you giving up?" He scolded.
"No! I'll never give up!" She yelled.
"Same here!" Tails cheered.
"Then why are we stopping now?" Knuckles questioned, "Come on, we have a friend in need. We will not rest until Sonic is safe in Scott's room! Now, let's move out!"
