At the school library, Buster was returning some books when he spotted his mother with a man. "My mom," Buster exclaimed, "with Mr. McCarter?!"

His exclaim was so loud, it caught the attention of both adults. "Buster!" Ms. Baxter exclaimed awkwardly. "I didn't expect you here."

"I had to," Buster said, "or else it's another library book fine. I can't believe that you're dating one of my teachers."

Just then, a cat person with an elaborate purple suit came in, looking angry. It was Principal Leanchardson. "Mr. Baxter," she growled, "you know very well that libraries are supposed to be quiet. Looks like that's detention for you."

"Okay, Principal Leanchardson," Buster groaned.

Bitzi felt bad that her son got detention for shouting in the library.

After school, Arthur, Fern, Francine, and Muffy were waiting for Buster to come to band rehearsal. That's when they got a text from him.

Can't go to the rehearsal

Got detention for shouting in the library

Buster

"I heard him shouting while I was heading to gym class," Francine recalled. "Sometimes I wish Buster could just calm down."

"He should drink some herbal tea," Fern suggested.

"Or perhaps a high-fat milkshake," insulted Portia as she got out her expensive bike.

Arthur, Francine, Muffy, and Fern were annoyed by Portia's insult. "If you're booking a gig at the school dance Saturday," she added, "forget it. DJ Destimight has booked a gig there."

"I, like, can't wait for him to play the Lamesations's 'I Smell Like Oversalted Water'," Riccarda sighed.

"Ooohhh," Aleena replied. "Never heard of that song."

"It's not a song, dodo head," Riccarda snapped.

Annoyed, Portia dragged her cohorts to her mom's car to go buy new clothes for the dance. "I wonder how Buster is doing?" Fern asked in consideration.

Meanwhile, Buster was stuck in detention for shouting in the library. Amongst the other patrons in detention was Binky for doing spitballs in class. Binky looked at Buster's paper and giggled at the song. "Whatcha writing?" Binky asked curiously.

"If you must know," Buster replied, "I'm writing a song for my mom and her new boyfriend, Mr. McCarter."

"The music teacher?" Binky asked. "I hear he prefers hot scoops, and I don't mean the tasty ice cream like where Brain's family works at."

"This may be a little silly," Buster replied, "but I'll read it quickly since detention usually doesn't allow talking."

Oooh, my dearest star

I feel the passion from near and far

Where happiness brings the apple to the lost eyes

You're going to get a romantic surprise

The first day that I saw you

It was Romance at first right

You were totally out of the blue

and give me my passion bite

You are my Awesome Amazing

My Bashing Beat

and my Crazy Cupid

Oooh, my dearest star

I feel the passion from near and far

Where happiness brings the apple to the lost eyes

You're going to get a romantic surprise

Observing my heart

From the millennium start

I can tell the different loves apart

You are my Dearest Demand

My Eager Eagle

And my Faithful Fairy

Oooh, my dearest star

I feel the passion from near and far

Where happiness brings the apple to the lost eyes

You're going to get a romantic surprise

The next day after school, Buster was reading his poem to his bandmates in Apartment E5. Unfortunately, they all thought the song was terrible. "I know constructive criticism isn't easy to handle," Buster admitted, "but did you have to be annoyed? We're friends here."

"True," Francine said, "but I don't think that's cut out for a love song."

Disappointed, Buster wondered what would make the perfect song for his mom and her new boyfriend. "This is a nightmare," he groaned.

Hearing this, Muffy remembered a song she wrote back when she was eight. "The Manager of Your Dreams," she wrote while promoting U Stink.

"Isn't that a love song you wrote about Nick Carter?" Fern asked.

"I did," Muffy answered. "I wrote it the night before they came to Elwood. It's been years since I've done this, so the writing may be a little off."

After two hours of getting the right music and rewriting the song, they were ready to manage their dreams.

At Saturday night's dance, everyone was enjoying themself while listening to the music. Portia, Riccarda, and Aleena were trying to spot the cutest boy at the dance. However, a lot of them were taken. While she was getting some punch, Portia spotted a nervous Buster. "Hey, Portia," he said. "Muffy has written a song for my mom."

"Oh, please," Portia growled. "Your mother doesn't stand a chance against the music teacher."

"Tell him, Port," Riccarda agreed.

Buster felt down, knowing that he didn't have a chance to play matchmaker.

Onstage, Principal Leanchardson made an unfortunate announcement. "Attention, students," she announced. "I regret to inform all of you that DJ Destimight has to stay home and look after his kids after their regular babysitter canceled due to a surprise from her grandparents. Instead, the Summer Sensations will be performing tonight."

Everyone was surprised by this, especially the Sensations. "Come on, Principal Leanchardson!" Portia shouted. "Muffin Tops, Poison Fern, Freaksky, Artwerp, and Busted Buster are Lamesations!"

Realizing what Portia really meant, the five musicians went onstage and performed Muffy's song.

I'm the manager of your dreams

Because I'll make all of your dreams reality

Got a head full of plans and schemes

Yeah, you'll be toppin' the charts for eternity

Everyone cheered for the Summer Sensations, except for Portia and her posse. "Look at them," she growled. "They think they can humiliate us at my mother's spa."

"Actually," Aleena corrected, "it was an accident."

"Shut up," snapped Portia. "Why don't we give it to the Sucksations?"

Angered by their harassment, Principal Leanchardson decided to make Portia, Riccarda, and Aleena clean up after the dance, much to their dismay.

After the Summer Sensations got off the stage, Ms. Baxter came up and hugged her song for performing such a great song.

"I'll tell you one thing," Mr. McCarter said. "You really know how to perk up a school dance. This is how I got my first gig in music - 12-year-old Ty McCarter, who's the master of keyboards and harmonica. I performed Bob Dylan songs while everyone slow-danced."

Although Buster was thrilled and impressed with his mom's new boyfriend, he was also sad about not performing his song. Feeling guilty, Francine said to her friend, "I think I know what you can use the song for."

The next day after school, they arrived at D.W.'s old preschool, Elwood Community Preschool, where Buster performed the same song to the children.
