I will say I don't like this story to mush because of how hard it was to put with the actual book. I most likely will not continue this but some of you may enjoy it. As always Enjoy!
GoldenFinch.
Water dripped steadily down a stalagmite. Her talons lightly tapped as she walked down a glowing corridor. Plants bloomed around her making an eerie glow. She held out her palm to a dead flower. It let out a shiver and it started to come back alive. She let out a small sigh.
"See, everything is ok." she said into the dark. Nothing replied back to her. She continued to walk down the glowing corridor. She looked around and grabbed a small fruit from a hanging vine. She peeled the small fruit and ate it.
She had no idea what was happening at the surface. All she knew was she was alone. She loved her life though. She had good vision in the dark from all the years in darkness and she had survived with her power. She knew about other dragons but she also knew about death so she chose not to go to the surface.
She walked to the main cave she lived in. It had glowing mushrooms and iridescent flowers. She curled into her small sleeping pile of moss and leaves. She sighed, relaxing into it and closed her eyes.
A loud boom rang around her cave and woke her up. She jumped alarmed and started to panic. She looked around hearing the panic rise in herself.
"Breath." she told herself as she tried to breathe steadily. She looked around again. "What was that? It came from… Oh no. Above."
She looked up to the ceiling. Somewhere above her something was happening. She thought about it for a minute then stamped her foot.
"I'm going up there. I must see what is going on." she said into the dark abyss. She started walking towards the farthest corridor with the opening. Her eyes scanned the empty walls as she walked on. She stopped at the opening looking back at her home.
She sighed. "I'll be back." She stepped into the bright sunlit opening. Sun shone through the trees above her. Leaves blew in the wind. She inhaled the smell of the plants all around her. She ducked when she saw a flying figure soar overhead.
She hesitated. "I don't know if I can do this."
The wind blew past her as another figure flew overhead after the other. Then two more. She saw how they looked like dragons. She gasped. She had never seen other dragons before, besides her great grandmother. She took a cautious step into the forest and looked down. The ground was soft and green. She smiled at the trees overhead and closed her eyes. She had never seen trees before. She was standing there, her wings outspread. She jumped back hearing a thump then three more. She started backing into her cave and tripped on a vine. She got up and placed her talons on the grass around her. The grass grew into long tendrils that stuck up from the ground.
A dragon stepped out into her view. She huddled down, backing very slowly into her cave. The dragon let out a growl. "We know you're here."
She flinched. She had never spoken to another dragon before. She had no idea how to talk with them. The dragon growled again but instead of her talking another one did.
"Please we only want to know who you are." the strange dragon said. She looked over the tall long grass she had just grown. She saw a dragon who looked like her and three other dragons who had two sets of wings. They reminded her of the moths that made their way into her cave. She took a small step back and split a stick in half. The first dragon threw her wings up menacingly. She flinched again hoping they did not see her. One of the other dragons pointed over to her.
"Over there." he said to the others. His wings were a royal blue and had hints of purple. She stood as still as she could when the first one came closer. The dragon looked like she hated everything. She had begun looking through the tall grass as GoldenFinch pounced on her and attempted to fly away. She got caught by another dragon as she tried to fly away. This dragon was a darker blue with orange spots along his underbelly. She squirmed under his talons as the other one got up. She stood up glaring at GoldenFinch. GoldenFich only stared back.
"Who are you?" she growled.
She pushed onto the dark blue dragon. He only looked amused. Another dragon came over. This dragon was yellow and brown with darker brown spots scattered around its body.
"We only want to know who you are." her voice was soft. She blinked at the three dragons. Then she did something drastic. She arched her arm over and dug her claws into the ground willing the vines to come down and tangle these dragons. The vines slithered down like snakes and would themselves into a ball around Goldenfinch. She let out her breath.
The angry dragon roared. "Did you see that?"
The one with the soft voice spoke at the same time. "What was that?"
She looked through the gaps in the vines at the dragons. The angry one was fuming. If she had fire she would have burnt down the entire forest.
"Leave me." she shouted to them.
The yellow one looked at the angry one. "Sundew I think we should leave."
Sundew let out a growl. "No. This dragon has angered me."
The royal blue one came up. "Sundew, Cricket is right, we should leave."
"I will not leave. Blue. You Swordtail and Cricket can leave but I need to figure out how she did that." she said less angry. She looked at the dragon called Sundew. She knew other dragons had this power but she had never known if it was bad.
"Oh no." she said aloud.
"What?" Sundew snapped.
The vines under her talons started to wither. They snapped as she grabbed them. The vine ball was now a pile of decaying mass. She slowly poked her head out of the mass. She had accidentally put a spell on them to rot under her talons.
Sundew looked at her. "How did you do that?"
She didn't want to answer, only to go back to her cave. She looked past them at the small entrance. What would happen if she sealed it off after she got inside. She would live her quiet dark life.
"Don't you know of leaf speak?" she asked cautiously. She slowly walked out of the rotten moss pile.
Sundew looked towards Cricket. "I've never seen leaf speak do that."
GoldenFinch looked at the ground seeing shriveled vines stick out. "This?"
Sundew nodded. "Leaf speak is only supposed to grow plants, not kill them."
She hesitated. "I can't tell you."
Sundew let out a small growl. "Tell me."
Cricket stepped toward GoldenFinch. "Please tell us."
GoldenFinch stumbled back. "I…um…" she tripped over a vine. She stood up seeing their faces. "I have magic." she looked down.
Sundew rolled her eyes. "So do I. But how did you make the vines die?"
She looked at Sundew. "It's actual magic. I'm an animus."
Everyone took a few steps back. She looked at them, seeing a little bit of fear in their eyes. She sat looking at her talons. Talon steps come over to her. It was Cricket. She put her wing over GoldenFinch.
"It's ok." she smiled.
GoldenFinch was bigger than her. GoldenFinch was almost fully grown. Her wings reminded her of the beetles in the cave. She looked over to her home. The dark cave seemed to be so far away. She got up slowly and walked over to her small cave opening.
"Wait," Sundew said. "Where are you going?"
She looked at the cave. "Home." She stepped inside hearing the small drops of water from stalagmites. She also heard talon steps behind her. She looked and saw the four of them walk in behind her. She shifted her talons unsure if they could come but she continued walking. She passed the small mushroom cave glowing with iridescent bugs. She walked through the big open cave where she learned to fly. She went to her cave. The main cave she used for sleeping and studying. She had grown up in these caves.
She smiled as she came to her cave. She saw a scroll half unrolled next to her moss bed. She grabbed it seeing what she was reading the day before. She looked at it then rolled it up and put it on the big wooden table.
"Where are we?" Blue said.
She looked at them. "My home."
Cricket was looking around the cave looking at the different scrolls and plants. Sundew looked mildly impressed but it barely showed. Swordtail was mostly looking above to see if there were any sky holes. She walked over to the shelves carved into the wall. She looked through one as she picked an empty bottle. She grabbed the bottle and dumped it into the small river flowing on the other side of the cave. She filled it with a specific amount of water and put a glowing flower in it. She put the top on it and swirled it around. The bioluminescence of the flower bled into the water making a bright glow.
Cricket gasped. "Wow." She walked over to GoldenFinch and inspected the bottle. The bottle reflected light off Crickets spectacles. "How did you do that?"
GoldenFinch smiled. "It's simple science really. The bioluminescence from the flower bleeds into the water making it glow."
Cricket looked at GoldenFinch. "Do you have any scrolls about this?" she asked.
"No I don't think so." she replied. "Please don't touch that." she said as Sundew was reaching out for a picture on the wall.
Sundew drew her hand back. "Oh. Um, who is this?" she asked GoldenFinch.
GoldenFinch placed the glowing bottle on the table and walked over to the big painting. "My great grandmother."
Sundew looked at it again. "She looks familiar."
"It's quite possible you knew her," she said, covering it with a cloth. "Before she looked after me she lived in the forest I think."
Blue walked over to them. "Did we get your name?"
"Oh I'm GoldenFinch." She finished putting the cloth over the painting. "My great grandmother's name was Sequoia. She died when I was young."
They all looked at eachother. They gave each other a look she didn't quite understand.
"What?" she asked.
Sundew was first to speak. "Sequoia is alive."
GoldenFinch looked at them, her memories telling her lies. "No. My great grandmother is dead." Her heart raced. They were lying. They had to be.
"No she isn't." Cricket said calmly. "She's alive. She is Queen of the Leaf Wings. You're tribe." Cricket walked closer to GoldenFinch.
"No." she yelled, a blast of energy caused plants to erupt into the cave. It knocked the four of them back. "My life is not a lie. You're lying." She covered her head with her talons.
Cricket got up again and walked over towards GoldenFinch. Blue stepped towards Cricket to stop but Cricket continued. She put her wings around GoldenFinch. "I know what it's like to hear a lie. My own queen has been lying to her tribe for years."
GoldenFinch didn't know what to say. She had never done that before. She felt horrible to use her magic and hurt dragons. Her talons were shaking.
Sundew got up and shook herself then let out a growl. "We should kill her before she kills us."
Blue was sitting speechless at Sundew's words. Swordtail looked confused at what had just happened. She curled herself into a ball letting tears slide down her face. Cricket was still sitting with her, her wings covering her. She didn't know what to do. She never even wanted to be there. She had only come out of her cave because of The Breath Of Evil. It created that noise. She refused its power. She refused its calls.
"No." Cricket said defiantly. "We don't kill other dragons unless we need to."
It wanted to be free. She grabbed her head. Its calls were getting louder. "Help." she whispered.
Cricket looked at her. "What's wrong?"
"Ahh." she said, falling to the ground clutching her head. "It's so loud."
Cricket stood up and walked back. "What's happening to her?" she asked worriedly.
Sundew stepped forward. "I don't know." she said more confused more than anything. "We should take her to the Leaf Wings. They could help."
She was still on the floor when Swortail and Sundew picked her up. They followed the path she had taken to get inside the tunnels. They were stepping out of the tunnel when GoldenFinch lost consciousness. The Breath Of Evil was trying to get to her. It knew her leaf speak was the most powerful out of any dragon.
She woke up in a small room filled with light. She was on a moss bed when she woke up. She clutched her head from the pain. She looked around the sunlit room. It had shelves with scrolls on them and a small desk near the shelves. She looked at the wooden door that was partially opened. She staggered up catching herself when she fell. She steddied herself then walked towards the door. She opened in and blinked wondering if she was dreaming. She saw dragons everywhere. Dragons flying, dragons eating, dragonets playing. She was amazed. Wherever she was it was covered in plants. The entirety of the building was made of leaves that let sunlight shine through.
She spotted a dragon she knew. Sundew was somewhere near the dragonets talking with another dragon. This dragon looked kinder. She had a soft voice and had kind eyes. GoldenFinch wasn't sure if she should leave the room but she desperately wanted to apologize to them. She took a step then a dragon came up to her. This one was a handsome dragon who looked like he had just discovered something about her.
"Hello," he said kindly. "I've never seen you before. Are you from the Poison Wings like Sundew?"
"Oh um," she stammered. He was talking to her. She had never had a male dragon talk to her on their own. Blue and Swordtail only did because of Cricket and Sundew. "I don't know who Poison Wings are." she said truthfully. She looked at him. He had a greenish silver line running down underbelly scales. His green scales looked as if they were made of the Prettiest leaves.
Sundew walked over with the dragon she was talking with. The dragon she was talking with was darker pale green with really pale green wings. She looked like some of the plants down in her cave. She suddenly realized that she did not see the cave entrance.
Sundew came up to her. "Glad you're feeling better."
She nodded. "Yeah. I'm so sorry about that."
"Can you get Cricket and the others for me?" she asked the pale dragon. She was kind to this dragon. Perhaps she was her sister.
"Yeah I can do that, Sundew." she replied.
She left and Sundew looked at the male dragon. "Hey."
"Hey." he said back to her.
"Gold we must speak." she looked at him again. "In private."
He smiled. "Of course. See you around Sundew. Nice meeting you, Gold." he smirked and flew off. She watched as he flew up towards a pavilion high in the building.
She followed Sundew into the room she woke up in. "Where am I?" she asked as she shut the door.
"The Leafwing palace." Sundew said, sitting down looking tired. "We brought you here in hopes one of the healers could help."
"Oh." she said looking at her talons. "Listen I'm so sorry about the blast of energy. I feel awful when I use my magic. And also why are you calling me Gold?"
Sundew smiled. "Oh we thought it would be easier to call you Gold then GoldenFinch. Is that ok?"
GoldenFinch nodded. "Yeah I like it."
A knock at the door. Sundew opened it and Cricket, Blue, Swordtail and the pale green Leafwing came in. Sundew closed the door again. The pale dragon looked at Gold.
"Well everyone is here," Sundew started. "We have to ask what happened back there?" Sundew looked at Gold.
She hesitated. Saying its name made her sick. "It's a plant. It overwhelmed me with its calls. It's called The Breath Of Evil."
