Same as the last one I don't particularly like this one but some of you may. I hate to say but I am running out of short stories so this may end. If you have a dragon you'd like me to write a short story for, feel free to tell me. As always Enjoy!
Firedove
She stood in the throne room talking with Queen Ruby. Ruby's dragonet was singing a quiet song in the background as Firedove spoke to Ruby. "I've had the soldiers look for your mother in the palace." her voice was worried. "I don't know if we should look in the kingdom though. We might not be able to spare the warriors. Burn could retaliate."
Ruby tapped the throne. "I understand."
Ruby's dragonet came bundling over. He tripped over his own talons and bumped into Firedoves leg. "Oof. Oh sorry miss." he said getting up. He bundled over to his mother.
Ruby smiled at her dragonet. "Cliff, why don't you go play in the dragonet room?" she said softly.
Cliff shifted his talons. "Because it scares me."
Ruby shook her head and went back to her and Firedoves conversation. "Thank you for everything. You have been a great friend."
Firedove bowed her head and walked out of the throne room. She watched as dragons rushed past her, stood idle in conversation and flew around the palace. It wasn't as busy as it had been a few days ago when Scarlet was queen. Scarlet was an awful queen who was as fair as a dragonbite viper would bite someone. She walked towards one of the pavilions and took off. Her wings stretched across the sky as she flew over the palace. Her wings tilted off to the left as she veered towards the small village she called home. There was a small landing platform for landing and taking off. She landed and walked down the small streets. Little vendors sold different things in their shops. One sold jewelry, one sold weapons and another was selling seasoned meat of different kinds. The enticing smell drew her towards the small food shop.
"Hello, what can I do for you?" the male dragon at the stand asked.
Firedove glanced at the different meats and chose the smoked deer. "I'll take that one."
The shopkeeper nodded and gently grabbed the deer meat and put it in a paper like bag. "That will be 5 silver please."
She reached into her satchel she had around her neck. Being a General she was paid very well so she had no trouble paying for what she bought. She often even gave them more than what she owed. She searched through her satchel grabbing 5 copper instead. Copper was worth more than silver and she knew this. She handed it to the shopkeeper who looked surprised and thanked her. She walked off taking her route home. Her home was small and simple, the way she liked it. It had three rooms inside it. One that had a fireplace and a small desk with a scroll shelf next to it. One was a kitchen where she ate and prepared her food. The other was her bedroom. It had a small cushion and a bigger shelf. She reached the table in her kitchen and set down the deer meat. She sat at the table unwrapping the meat. She set it on top of a small platter and sliced into it. She took a bite and the flavor exploded into mouth. She loved the street vendors that sold new foods. They always had some new flavors to go with the new foods.
She finished it slowly and got up. She walked to her small scroll shelf and grabbed one about the Seawings. She always liked to read about the other tribes and learn new things. Her favorite tribe to research was the Seawings. Yeah Nightwings had all the magical powers and the Icewings had all the animus touched objects but the Seawings had their own underwater language and could breathe underwater.
She was about done reading when someone knocked on her door. She walked over to it and opened it. "Can I help you?" she said to the strange Skywing.
"Oh hello." he said, not sure what to do. "I'm looking for Firedove."
"I'm Firedove." she said, straightening herself.
"I'm Axel, your new recruit." he said as calmly as he could.
"Hmm oh yes Axel I remember you." she said after a little pause. "Well it's good to meet you. I will start training tomorrow for our new recruits."
He shifted a little. "Ok."
"Well I'll see you tomorrow then." she said kindly.
He gave a small nod and left. She closed her door and walked over to her bedroom. She curled into her bed and closed her eyes ready for sleep.
After training she walked down the streets of her home. Her scales felt the warm sun shine at her. She walked, seeing the usual vendors and some others from different parts of the kingdom. She walked past one that was selling clothes. Another one was selling stones. She watched the vendors as she walked past them. Some dragons were buying things while others were just browsing. She wasn't paying attention when she suddenly bumped into someone.
"Oh so sorry." She apologized. This dragon was an odd rusty red color. His eyes were a bright amber.
"Sorry," he said gruffly but kindly. His eyes scanned her and she had a feeling he was looking for something. She nodded her head and continued her way around him. "Wait." he said after her.
She stopped and turned around. "Yes?"
"You look familiar." he said thinking.
"You may have seen me. I live here."
"Mmm no you look like someone I've seen in the palace."
She tapped her tail on the ground thinking about it. "You may have seen me in the palace. I'm General Firedove."
His mind must have clicked into place as his eyes widened. "General?"
"Yes." she said simply. She was starting to get bored of this.
"Well General, I'm Crimson." he did a little bow.
"Nice to meet you Crimson, but if you'll excuse me I'm very busy." She turned around and began walking.
Crimson had a small smile on him as she walked away from him. Annoying dragon, she thought to herself. She turned the street that her home was on. She opened the door and walked in. She looked around her home. Its bare rooms show dust here and there. She closed the door behind her and walked into her room. She looked around her room and sighed. A knock at the door annoyed her more as she went to open it. She did and found a messenger there.
"Hello I'm looking for General Firedove." the messenger said.
"That is me."
The messenger shuffled through a bag and pulled out a scroll. "From Queen Ruby."
She grabbed the scroll and gave a thanks then closed the door. She opened the scroll and read through it. It simply said:
Dear General Firedove,
I would like it if you attended this evening's ball. I'm throwing it to let dragons know I'm not my mother. I hope you consider coming. It would be of great pleasure to see you here.
Queen Ruby
A party, she thought. She dropped the scroll off on her desk and sat at her table.
"A party. Should I go?" She was talking to herself. "On one talon I don't like to go to the gatherings. On another talon it could be fun without scarlet. But on another talon it involves me interacting with dragons." she gave a small growl to herself. She shook her head and decided. "I'll go."
She didn't have anything for a party so she went out to the jewelry vendors. She looked through them and noticed one in particular. It was a golden inlaid necklace with a fire pendant on it. It looked expensive but she could buy it. As she got closer she saw it had small rubies in the gold.
"How much?" she asked the shop keep.
"50 silver."
She searched through her bag and pulled out 50 silver. "Here you go." the shopkeeper handed over the necklace in a bag. She grabbed it carefully and put it in her bag. She continued to walk down the vendors. By the time she was done she had the necklace, a pair of red quartz earrings and an amber bracelet. She liked what she had bought. She then went home to prepare for the party.
She finished polishing her scales and horns and she had put on her new jewelry. She was ready. She opened the door and walked out. It was dark and dimly lit as torches were placed outside. She took off into the air and flew to the palace. It was a shorter flight than most. When she landed she could see a bunch of dragons with accessories. She walked into the ballroom being greeted by soldiers and other Generals. She was surprised to see so many dragons. She walked over towards Queen Ruby who looked happy to greet any dragon who came up to her.
"Firedove." she said, noticing her. "I'm so glad you came."
"Yeah." she only replied.
"Oh wow. You look amazing." Ruby said, noticing the necklace.
"Thanks." she let out a small smile.
Ruby smiled back. She put her wing over Firedove guiding her towards a more empty part of the party. "I really am glad to see you. It would have felt weird to do this without you. You're like a sister."
Firedove felt this as well. Ruby was the only dragon who knew Firedoves secrets. Firedove trusted Ruby with her life.
"Excuse me your majesty," a voice suddenly said. "You look extravagant this evening."
"Thank you Crimson." Ruby said to the dragon that came up. "This is General Firedove." Ruby said motioning to Firedove.
"Yes we met not that long ago." he had a small smirk across his face. "It's good to see you."
She wanted to roll her eyes at him and walk away but Ruby was there. Instead she just nodded. This dragon made her feel uneasy. She shook her head slightly and smiled. "I think I'm gonna go now." she said to Ruby.
"Are you sure?" Ruby asked. Firedove nodded. "Ok well I'll see you around."
"Yeah it was nice seeing you." she said then walked towards the closest exit. She got to the pavilion and opened her wings. She took off. She didn't quite feel like going home so she flew towards the mountains. She knew of a small area that she could stop there and rest. It was always quiet. She came into view of the small valley. It wasn't much of a valley. It had space for at least four dragons. It was nice and secluded. It had a cave to the back of it and a smaller tree for shade. She landed and felt a little happier. She was alone. No one around to try and flirt with her or talk to her about the war and how she is such an amazing General. She was alone with her thoughts.
She breathed a plume of fire onto some wood and gazed up at the stars. She was always captivated by the stars. They seemed to shine brighter than anything else.
She sat gazing at the stars for a while. She didn't notice when a dragon came flying down. She only realized it when they spoke to her.
"Hey." it simply said. She looked over startled and saw Crimson. "Are you ok?" he asked.
"Yeah I'm fine." she said back. She didn't know why he was here or if he had maybe followed her. She also didn't know if this place was a secret.
"Oh ok." he seemed a little nervous. "It's just at the party you seemed not exactly bored but definitely not happy about it." he tried to explain. He was obnoxious but she didn't mind his presence.
"I don't usually do parties." she only replied. She looked at him. He looked less stiff. At the party he had this charming smile on but now he looked tired. He was still adorned with the jewelry he was wearing at the party. Same as her. She didn't even think to put her accessories in her home. She just thought about getting out of there.
Crimson sat down. "Do you come here often?" he asked.
"Yeah." she said, looking at him. "I kind of stumbled across it by accident."
"Same. I was out flying one day and saw this." he put his talon out gesturing to the area. "I thought it was a perfect hidden area. I guess I'm not the only one."
She nodded. "I don't come here that often but when I do it's empty."
"I haven't seen any dragons here either." he said softly. "You're the first one I've seen."
"Hmm." she said getting up. "Well I'll leave you to it then."
"Wait, you don't have to go." he said, standing and spreading his wings. "You can stay if you'd like."
She thought about it then nodded. "Yeah I guess I'll stay." She then laid back down in her spot. He was staring at her with an odd look. His amber eyes shone into hers. For a moment she thought she could get lost in them. Then he looked away towards the fire. She looked up at the sky. It was starting to grow a little lighter out but still dark.
They sat there for a while. Crimson would look at her then he'd look away when she would look at him. It was back and forth. She sat up stretching. She shook herself making the jewelry clang together. Crimson looked at her.
"I think I'm going to go." she said to him.
"Oh." he fumbled. "Ok. I'll see you around."
She stretched her wings high and took off. He watched her fly away. She flew towards her home. As she saw her home she was getting ready to land. She landed and entered her home. She walked straight to her bedroom and took off her jewelry. It clunked in the empty chest near her bed. She let out a long sigh and curled into her bed ready for sleep. She couldn't sleep. Something was on her mind. Better yet someone was on her mind. Crimson. He had shown up when she was alone confronting her into conversation. He was kind to her and acted like she was a normal dragon. She closed her eyes trying to sleep. She closed them tighter forcing the tiredness to overcome her and take her into a peaceful slumber. She sighed ready to give up but before she could open her eyes her mind fuzzed as she finally went into the deepness of her mind.
A few weeks later
Firedove was surprised to get an invitation. She had opened and read through it. It was queen Ruby again asking Firedove to come to her hatching day party. She was only inviting close friends but the entire kingdom was already celebrating. She had excepted it knowing there would only be a selected few who were coming. She decided to wear her necklace only. It wasn't a big party where she would have to elaborately adorn herself. She could be more herself around these dragons. She knew off the top of her head who would be entering. A bunch of Generals, guards, war meeting members and close friends.
She clipped the golden necklace around her neck adjusting it to her liking. She took a small glance in the mirror making sure it looked good then started out the door. She opened it and took off making sure the door had been closed behind her. She flew towards the palace that was lightly lit up from the small festivities that were going on for Ruby's hatching day. It would have taken her only a minute or two to fly to the palace but she decided to take a longer route. As she flew around the palace she could see a courtyard lit up with light ranging in colors. In another were statues made from metal glimmering in the torchlight.
It surprised her how much Queen Ruby wanted her hatching day to be seen, but it also made sense. Some of the dragons who put up decorations were happy to not be celebrating in the arena where Scarlet had held her hatching day festivities.
She landed on a small balcony that looked east towards the ocean. As she walked into the ballroom the party was being held in, she ran into General Ash. He was a tall dragon who was a dark orange.
"General Firedove, good to see you." he said to her. His voice cracked with age. He was perhaps the oldest General to keep their position.
"Hello General Ash." she said back. "How are the swamp lands this time of year?" she asked.
"Oh as you can imagine. Very muddy, but we hold our own." he said. Ash's quadrant held position in the swamplands with Queen Moorhen's Mud wings.
"Good." she replied. Someone called Ash over and he accused himself. She continued her way around all the dragons.
"Firedove?" a surprised voice said behind her. It was a minor soldier but Firedove would never forget her sister's voice.
"Flair? What are you doing here?" She turned to her sister.
"You aren't Queen Ruby's only friend you know." she said jokingly.
Ruby walked up to them the moment she saw them. "Oh good you both showed up. It wouldn't be my hatching day without you two." She gave them a quick hug.
"Ahem," a dragon said loudly. "I would like to say happy hatching day to our Queen and to wish her a beautiful life." They all turned to see a dragon up on a stage. "I would also like to dedicate this song to her." he nodded towards the dragons behind him. He held a strange instrument that had strings attached to it. He pulled on the revealing a beautiful noise. Firedove squinted to see who it was. "Who is that?" She asked Ruby.
"That's Crimson. He's one of the best musicians in the tribe." Ruby replied. And she was right.
