Chapter 5: The Search

Surrey, Britain

Kurtis entered the study, finding Chris and Elizabeth already immersed in their research. The room was adorned with ancient scrolls, remnants of Elizabeth's past, saved from the devastating fire that had engulfed her order's safe house in South Africa several years ago. As Kurtis settled down at the desk, Chris filled him in on their findings.

"Elizabeth attempted to glean some insights from the salvaged scrolls," Chris began, "but unfortunately, they didn't reveal anything groundbreaking. It seems we already possess the knowledge they contain."

Kurtis pondered this information for a moment, his mind racing with possibilities. "What if the key information we need is still hidden in Turkey?" he proposed, hoping to spark a new line of inquiry.

Chris shook his head skeptically. "While it's true that Turkey could hold the origins of the Black Angels, that fortress was lost to time, buried beneath the earth's surface. Its whereabouts remain a mystery to us all."

Frustrated, Kurtis sighed and questioned, "So, are we back to square one, then?"

Elizabeth's eyes sparked with determination as she responded firmly, "No, Kurtis. We can't afford to give up. We must press on, relentlessly, in our pursuit to thwart Karel's plans."

Intrigued by the mention of his pursuers in Nancy, Kurtis sought answers. "Can you shed some light on those men who were after me in Nancy?" he inquired, his curiosity piqued.

Elizabeth's urgency became evident as she replied, "All I know is that Karel wanted to capture you. I alerted Lloyd to the identities of the cabal members, urging him to remain vigilant against their threat."

"So, they were members of the cabal," Kurtis deduced, connecting the dots.

Elizabeth nodded, confirming his suspicions. Just then, the study door swung open, and Henry, their loyal aide, entered.

"Miss Clark," Henry addressed Elizabeth respectfully.

"Yes, Henry?" Elizabeth responded, her attention now focused on her devoted assistant.

"Miss Croft has arrived," Henry announced, his voice conveying a sense of urgency.

"Thank you, Henry. Please inform Edward to prepare himself," Elizabeth instructed, her mind shifting gears.

"Of course, Miss," Henry acknowledged before exiting the room promptly.

Elizabeth rose from her seat, turning to Kurtis with resolve. "Let's get down to business," she declared, her tone brimming with determination.

With a shared sense of purpose, the trio left the study, making their way to meet with the formidable Lara Croft. Their mission to halt Karel and his perilous plans had reached a critical juncture, and every moment counted in their race against time. The stakes were high, and their collaboration was paramount to their success.

As they ventured forth, the anticipation of what lay ahead fueled their determination. Each step brought them closer to the truth, closer to unraveling the mysteries that plagued them. In this pivotal moment, they found solace in the unity of their purpose, knowing that only through their collective strength could they hope to triumph over the formidable forces that threatened the world's safety.

And so, with hearts ablaze and minds alight with conviction, the unlikely alliance of Kurtis, Elizabeth, Chris, and Lara embarked on a daring adventure, their fates intertwined and their destinies intertwined. United by a shared vision of a safer world, they braved the unknown, ready to confront whatever challenges lay in their path. Their journey was only beginning, and the weight of the world rested on their shoulders.

As they stepped out of the study, resolute and focused, they cast aside their doubts, for the hour of reckoning had arrived, and they were prepared to face it head-on. With unyielding determination, they embarked on their next chapter, their collective endeavor shrouded in mystery and fraught with danger, their spirits aflame with the hope of a brighter future.

Elizabeth's footsteps echoed through the quiet hallway as she made her way towards the tech room. The door slid open smoothly, revealing Lara and Edward engrossed in a conversation about computers. Elizabeth couldn't help but sigh; there were more urgent matters that needed their attention.

Interrupting their discussion, Elizabeth spoke up, "I'm glad you received my letter."

Lara turned towards her with a smile, her eyes filled with curiosity. "It seems like there's still trouble brewing, judging by your message. Is it about Karel?"

Elizabeth nodded solemnly. "Yes, Karel is still causing havoc in our lives. We need to find a way to stop him."

A voice emerged from behind Elizabeth, surprising Lara. It was Kurtis, alive and well!

"I need everyone on my team to focus on what Elizabeth has to say today," Kurtis stated, attempting to take a step back and let Elizabeth lead. He believed that she would make a better leader than him, but he struggled to find the right words to express his thoughts. "Because if Karel obtains what he's searching for..."

"No one will be able to stop him," Elizabeth finished his sentence, her voice tinged with concern.

Kurtis flashed a smirk at Lara, who was still grappling with the shock of his unexpected presence. "So, who made you the boss, and how are you standing here as if nothing happened?" she questioned in disbelief.

"Kurtis's family has been the leaders of the Lux Veritatis since the inception of the offshoot of the Knights Templar," Elizabeth replied, her voice steady. "As for his survival... well, let's just say a miracle occurred, a fortunate one."

Kurtis took a seat beside Lara, his gaze fixed on the screen before them.

"How did he survive? And when did Elizabeth become part of the Lux Veritatis? How did I miss all of this? She's been my friend for six years," Lara wondered, her thoughts swirling in confusion.

"Lara, Alex, and Lloyd," Elizabeth began, drawing everyone's attention back to the task at hand. "I need the three of you to work together here at my home, searching for the locations of these artifacts." She pointed to the screen behind her. "These artifacts, known as the Rambling Stone, were fragmented and scattered across the globe. Once reassembled, this artifact has the power to teleport anyone to the Black Angel's temple."

Lara nodded, her gaze shifting briefly to Kurtis, who was deep in thought, studying the screen intently.

"And Kurtis and I will be heading to Salt Lake City to meet up with the other six members of the Lux Veritatis," Elizabeth continued, her voice resolute. "Chris, I want you to travel to Turkey and gather more information about the Black Angel, the Ark Veritatis, and the lost stronghold. Any questions?"

Lara's curiosity got the best of her. "Who are the other six members?"

"There are eight members in total. Kurtis and I are two of them, and the remaining six are in America," Chris explained.

"Their names are Guilhelm, Limoux, Bogomil, DeCombel, Aircard, Occitan, Vasiley, and Montsegur. Their names are inscribed on the statues in the Vault of Trophies in Prague," Kurtis added.

"Kurtis and Chris are the Guilhelm brothers, I am the Occitan sister. I've reached out to the others globally, asking them to join us in Salt Lake City," Elizabeth concluded.

"Excellent," Lara acknowledged. "So, who or what exactly is this Black Angel?"

"We still don't know his origins, but we do know that he possesses the ability to awaken the last sleeper and eliminate his adversaries," Elizabeth explained, her tone low and cautious. "However, he can only do so when he possesses his weapon, the mighty Ark Veritatis."

Lara's brow furrowed in contemplation. "So, what you're saying is that if we don't awaken the Black Angel before Karel does, we'll be powerless against him?"

Elizabeth shook her head. "No, we still have the chosen one. Their time is approaching, and once they're revealed, Karel won't stand a chance. However, finding this person will be a challenge. Only the Demons, another order, hold the knowledge of their identity."

Lara tried to absorb the weight of the information. "I... see. And where is Karel now?"

"The last we heard, he was in Germany," Elizabeth replied.

Anxiety coursed through Lara's veins. Karel was drawing nearer, and they needed to act swiftly.

As the meeting concluded, Lara turned to Kurtis, prepared to inquire about his connection to the Cabal. But before she could speak, he preempted her.

"I know you have questions for me, and I promise I'll answer them. But for now, I want to express my gratitude for your assistance," Kurtis said sincerely.

"I want Karel dead as much as you do," Lara responded, determination gleaming in her eyes.

"I know," Kurtis replied with a small smile before leaving the room.

Lara sighed, feeling a twinge of disappointment at his lack of explanation. She picked up a book she had found and began reading, attempting to divert her thoughts and emotions. Guilt nagged at her conscience for not inquiring about Karel's lost sister, but she couldn't find the courage to address the topic.

As Chris and Elizabeth departed, leaving Lara alone in the room, she sat deep in thought. Time was of the essence; they had to act swiftly before Karel acquired the Ark Veritatis and set his nefarious plan in motion. Lara took a deep breath, refocusing her mind on the task that lay ahead.

As the day progressed, frustration began to mount for both Alex and Lara. They had been tirelessly scouring through books, maps, and historical records in Elizabeth's extensive library, searching for any clues that could lead them to the locations of the fragmented artifacts. Yet, their efforts had yielded no significant breakthroughs thus far.

Alex let out a sigh of exasperation, pushing back from the table. "I can't believe we haven't found anything yet. It's like searching for a needle in a haystack."

Lara shared his frustration, feeling the weight of the task ahead. "I know, Alex. But we can't afford to give up. We need to find those artifacts before Karel does."

Just then, Lloyd, who had been quietly working on a separate project, rose from his seat and approached Edward, the tech expert. "Hey, Edward, mind if I give you a hand with that? Maybe a fresh perspective will help."

Edward smiled gratefully. "Sure, Lloyd. Your input would be greatly appreciated."

As Lloyd and Edward delved into their work, Alex made a decision. "I'm going to go search for more books. Maybe there's something we missed."

Lara nodded, understanding his need to take a different approach. "Good idea, Alex. We need all the information we can get. Maybe something will click."

Alex left the room in search of additional reference materials, leaving Lara alone with her thoughts. She couldn't help but feel a pang of frustration mixed with curiosity. She reached into her bag and pulled out her father's journal—the same one she had discovered the day before.

Flipping through its worn pages, Lara's eyes fell upon the first entry. Her heart skipped a beat as she read the words written by her father's hand.

"I've met with a group of Lux Veritatis today. Their leader came to see me, accompanied by his two young boys. He sought information about Lara, but I found it unnecessary to explain how we found her. However, the things he revealed to me... It has stirred a desire within me to search for answers."

Lara couldn't believe what she was reading. Her father had encountered the Lux Veritatis, the very organization she was now working alongside. The revelation left her with a mix of emotions—confusion, curiosity, and a hint of betrayal. Why hadn't her father shared this with her?

She gently closed the journal, carefully placing it back into her bag. Her mind wandered back to the photograph she had discovered the previous day—the image of herself as a baby, held in her father's loving arms. It was a bittersweet reminder of the connection she had with him, but it also served as a stark reminder that there were aspects of her father's life and his involvement with the Lux Veritatis that she had yet to uncover.

Lara took a deep breath, determined to find answers, not only for the sake of their mission but also to understand her own past and her father's choices. She reopened the journal, turning to the first page once more, ready to delve further into the untold stories that lay within its worn and weathered pages.
