The sun shines over a place called Adventure City. It's a place where people go to have good vacations. The city itself has tall skyscrapers, restaurants, and subway stations, but there's also a denser part of the city, nicknamed Adventure Bay. There are open fields, farmlands, and even a mountain with a snowboard resort out there. There are plenty of people and dogs living in the city and by the bay, including a ten-year-old boy named Ryder.
Ryder is your average kid, he lives near the bay, does well in school, loves video games, and even owns a pup, named Chase. Except there are a few details about them that are different from others.
"Ryder? Ryder!" spoke a voice. The young boy groaned as he felt some applying weight in his chest. He opened his eyes and could see Chase standing on his chest. Ryder could finally hear the buzzing of his alarm clock, which sounded kind of weak.
"Aw, man," he groaned. "Are the batteries dying?"
"They sure are," Chase confirmed. Ryder sighed as he got out of bed and started with his morning routine. He headed downstairs to the kitchen to get some breakfast. He first poured out some kibble for Chase to eat before checking the pantry for some cereal.
The boy and his dog looked to see Ryder's mother, Samantha, walking in. Samantha had blonde hair and brown eyes and wore a white sweater with jeans and sandals. "Morning boys," she said.
"Morning, Mom," Ryder responded. He placed a box of cereal down on the table while he went to get some milk from the fridge.
"Any new plans?"
"Nothing new today. Just getting through school and then maybe working on my new tablet. Still trying to figure out a good name for it." Ryder got the milk and then got a bowl to pour it and the cereal into.
"Hey, um… Samantha," Chase spoke, "You think we could take a walk later?"
"Of course," the mother spoke. "I know it's got to be hard being cooped up here all day." Samantha got some breakfast like her son, who was noticing his pup was looking down.
"Penny for your thoughts, Chase?" Ryder asked.
The German Shepherd sighed. "Whenever you're at school it's just me at the house. Sometimes with Sam."
"It's true," Samantha confirmed. "I do what I can do to keep him happy, but there's only so much for a pup. I can only keep up with him for so long."
Ryder could understand the struggles. "It won't be long before I'm finished with high school," he explained. "After that, I'll probably have more free time on my hands." He continued eating his breakfast as his mother turned on the tv.
They were just in time to see the news, with a reporter standing outside of city hall. "Good morning everybody, I'm Marty Muckraker," he said. "Right now, I'm outside city hall, trying to get word from Deann Goodway about her reelection as Adventure City's mayor." He walked over to the said woman, who was walking towards the camera.
"Hello, Marty," she spoke.
"Ms. Goodway, what are your plans for the city if you're reelected?" He held his microphone to Deann Goodway
"Well, for starters, we'll try and find a way to reuse some of our old buildings. Instead of just spending thousands of dollars tearing them down, we'll refurbish them with modern-day technology. Especially the special tech we've got in Adventure City."
Marty Muckraker turned back to the camera. "I'd give my opinion folks, but I'm trying to prevent myself from playing favorites between the two candidates."
Samantha rolled her eyes. "I don't see how Goodway would struggle against Humdinger," she commented.
"Who?" Chase questioned.
"Oh, I forget, you don't focus on the news too much. He's just a petty man who does what he can to be in the spotlight."
"I've only heard about him a few times while at school," Ryder admitted. "Not too many positive things about him."
"I don't see why anyone would be a fan of that man," Samantha admitted. She plopped some toast in the toaster as she double-checked the clock. "Ryder, don't take too long to get ready."
"Almost finished my cereal." Ryder had a few last bites until there was only milk left in his bowl. He poured his bowl out in the sink before running back upstairs to use the bathroom. Chase had finished his kibble before letting out a sigh.
"I know it's not fun when he's not home," Samantha said.
Chase simply nodded and sighed. "It'll be better once he's out of high school." Both Chase and Samantha both wonder what Ryder would do once he had graduated.
A little while later, Ryder had quickly gotten changed into some jeans, sneakers, and a red and white t-shirt. He grabbed his backpack and quickly put on his helmet before getting on his bike. With a ring of his bell, he waved goodbye to Samantha and Chase as he biked off to school.
Along the way, Ryder kept thinking about how he could help make things easier for Chase. He kept thinking about the tablet he kept trying to build. Maybe once he successfully made this tablet, he could help build more tech for his pup. Maybe even other pups.
When Ryder got to school, he locked his bike up and then took something out of his backpack. It was the tablet he had been working on. He hadn't fastened the screen yet as there were still some components that he needed to work on. The young boy walked inside the high school, thinking to himself.
"Someday, I'm going to do something to help all pups," he said to himself. He put his tablet away and took out a sketchbook and pencil. Ryder started sketching on a blank page thinking about Chase. He now had a lot of ideas flowing through his brain. While he was busy with this and his classes that would start soon, other pups would be doing their things around the city and the bay.
At the beach, a chocolate lab did a few stretches before walking over to a nearby kiteboard. "Alwight, let's see if I can get a good wave." He pushed his board into the water and hopped on just as he got a good gust of wind. The chocolate-colored pup managed to catch and wave to get some air, hollowing with delight. "Awesome!"
He passed by a small boat that was piloted by a man with square glasses. "Morning Capt'n," the pup called. The captain waved back to the pup, who was nearly wiped out when he saw a walrus poke his head out of the water to wave at him. The pup chuckled, "Hi, Wally."
Elsewhere, a young bulldog found a pizza box, only to find one slice left. "Oh well, better than nothing," he shrugged. He quickly gobbled down the found food before hearing something.
"Mew. Mew!" The bulldog looked behind him and could see a small kitten looking at him.
"Aw! Aren't you cute?" The bulldog petted the kitten's head before somebody called out.
"Precious? Precious!" A little girl came walking towards them. Seeing her approach, the bulldog barked at the kitten, who quickly ran toward the little girl. "Precious, there you are!" She quickly picked up the startled kitten before walking away. The bulldog sighed before he walked in the other direction to find something to eat.
In an alleyway, a mixed breed was adding some touches to a small fort he had built. "Not looking too bad," the mixed breed commented. "Just need some more materials to help keep dry." He walked up some boxes stacked into a staircase to a dumpster. Hopping inside, the pup looked around until he found a hubcap. "Hmm, this could be a good umbrella. Wonder if that garage has anything I could borrow."
On the rooftops, a cockapoo was jumping and flipping as she made her way downtown. She stopped and looked over the edge to see the city arcade. There weren't as many people here on the weekdays, but the pup needed something to keep her busy. "This pup's going down," she proclaimed.
She ran to a nearby fire escape, running down each set of stairs until she hopped down onto the sidewalk safely. She soon ran inside the arcade and looked around until she found a machine titled, "Pup Pup Boogie!" She could only see one dog up for the playing the game and ran over to be his second player.
Lastly, outside of a cafe, a man who was getting on in years set a plate out to be taken into the dining room. He heard a crashing sound come from outside, and he poked his head out the door to see where it came from. The sound was caused by a Dalmatian that had tripped over some small boxes and ended up tipping over a trash can. "Oh, Marshall," the man sighed, "I wish you would look where you're going."
"Sorry," the Dalmatian apologized. "I just smelled food and got hungry."
"I'll leave something out for you in a moment. Just try not to hurt yourself." The pup nodded as the man went back to work as the Dalmatian did his best to flip the trash can back up. After doing that, he waited by the door for something to eat.
Meanwhile, Chase was being taken out for a morning walk by Samantha. "It'll be nice to have Ryder help around the house more often," the mother commented.
"What do you think he'll do for a job?" Chase asked. "Technical work?"
"Maybe. He's been making good progress with his tablet." The two walked past a pet parlor, where a blonde woman walked outside to take care of a garbage can.
"Morning, Sam," she called.
"Morning Rebecca," Ryder's mother replied. "How are things?"
"Fairly well. Katie's been well in school and we've been getting more customers. Katie's help is especially helpful. How about Ryder?"
"Great. He's almost finished with high school. We're still unsure about his future. Technical work is a good option for him."
"Maybe he could follow in his father's footsteps."
"You mean work at the garage with Owen? It could be a good starter job. Plus, Ryder has been wanting to expand his experience with different technology."
"Maybe something that pups can use," Chase suggested.
"That would be an interesting idea," Rebecca commented. Chase would've said something else if it wasn't for the fact he had to let out a sneeze. "Oops, I must still have some cat hair on me." Rebecca began dusting herself off as Chase covered his nose.
"Maybe we should get going," Samantha suggested. "Nice seeing you Becky."
"Bye Sam. Bye Chase." Rebecca walked back into the parlor as Samantha and Chase resumed their walk.
Eventually, the two made it to a cafe that also sold produce. Samantha loaded some into a bag while Chase was let off his leash to walk around. While he waited for the woman to finish shopping, he smelt something delicious. Out of the cafe, a bald man with a mustache carried a dog bowl filled with meatballs.
"Now where is he?" the man asked. He saw Chase walk over to the bowl with his mouth-watering. "Oh, hello Chase."
"Hi, Mr. Porter," the German shepherd responded. He saw the pup bend down to take a bite until he stopped him.
"Sorry Chase, but those meatballs aren't for you."
"Then who's eating them?"
Chase then glanced to his left when he heard a voice. "Here I come!" Out of the blue, a Dalmatian ran towards the bowl. He seemed to take his turn too fast, stumbled, and collided with Chase. Both pups groaned as Mr. Porter helped them stand up. "Sorry about that."
"It's okay," Chase groaned. "I'm good." Samantha heard the thud and ran over to check on the pups.
"What happened here?" she questioned.
"I just slipped," the Dalmatian explained. "Happens all the time." He sat down and started eating the meatballs that Mr. Porter brought out for him.
"Hello, Blair," Ryder's mother said to Mr. Porter. "Who's this pup?"
"Oh, this is Marshall," Mr. Blair Porter explained. "He often stops by here when he's looking for a meal. He and Alex get along pretty well, so I keep some food out that I can't sell."
"So, you're telling me, Marshall, here doesn't have a home?"
"It's not that bad," the young Dalmatian responded. "Sometimes during the nights with bad weather, I sometimes stay with him and Alex."
"So, you're adopted by them?"
Mr. Porter rubbed the back of his head. "Well, I'm fairly busy keeping my restaurant in order, and Alex… He doesn't seem to be the most responsible child."
"He is only five," Chase noted.
Samantha thought for a moment before she spoke again. "Marshall, I think you could do a little bit better than your current conditions," she noted.
"How so?" the stray pup asked. He and Chase looked at the woman who happily explained her idea.
"Why don't you come with us?"
"What?" both pups questioned.
"Think about it, Chase. You always say you've been wanting somebody that can keep up with you around the house."
"True," the German shepherd admitted.
"You mean I get to permanently stay in a home?!" Marshall asked. His tail started wagging with excitement.
"Hmm, we'll probably have to make sure if it's okay with Owen and Ryder. I'm sure they'll enjoy your company." Samantha walked back to her bag of groceries so she could pay for them.
Marshall started stepping in place and even ran in circles. "I can't believe it!" he cheered. "I'm going to get a new home!"
Chase smiled as he started warming up to the idea. "I hope you enjoy it," the German shepherd spoke, "It's a nice home. I'm sure you'll like Ryder."
Speaking of Ryder, he was waiting for his next class to start. Until then, he was drawing some sketches in his book, most of them showing Chase. A couple had the pup wearing several different types of tech. One showed him wearing a harness connected to his collar and it went around his torso. Another showed the pup wearing robotic gloves that allowed him to have some robotic arms, though it looked a little unfinished.
The most recent sketch showed Chase with some sort of backpack on. Out of the backpack was a cannon that Ryder drew showing launching a tennis ball.
He then heard the teacher walk in and quickly put his sketchbook down for the time being. While he did his best to pay attention to his teacher, the kind of tech that could help pups like Chase never left his mind. It was like this for his entire class, causing him to almost miss some questions.
After classes, he was able to get back to his sketches. Halfway through finishing, Ryder got a video call from his father. "Hey, Dad," Ryder spoke. "What's up?"
"Ah, I knew I timed this perfectly," Ryder's father, Owen, spoke. "I know your graduation is coming up, so I figured I would share a gift that I think we could work on together." Owen flipped the camera to show a rusty ATV.
"Whoa! Where did you get that?"
"Someone dropped it off a couple of days ago, so I thought we could fix it up together."
"That sounds great! I've been getting some ideas for Chase." Ryder flipped his phone's camera so he could show his father what was in his sketchbook. Owen was impressed with the sketches.
"Very interesting. How long have you been working on these?"
"A few days ago. I started when I was trying to think of some tech that Chase and other pups could use. I'm feeling pretty confident in the backpack."
"It certainly looks the best out of what I can see. Not sure how the robot hands would work."
"Yeah, me neither. Can't wait to work on that ATV."
"Yeah, it's going to be a great learning experience. See you after school son."
"Bye, Dad." The two ended their call so they could focus on their other activities. Each time he got a break from his classes, Ryder would draw some more in his sketchbook. He began making other designs of the pup's backpack, which was quickly becoming his favorite design. He drew some robotic arms, a flashlight, and even a pocket knife coming out of a few of them. Though Ryder did wonder how a pup would be able to control these.
Outside, a young cockapoo was walking down the street. She had played a little bit at the arcade until she had gotten bored, so she decided to explore the city. Walking around a corner, she heard a shriek which made her look around until she saw a man struggling to keep an eagle under control while getting it into a cage.
The man had a blonde twirly mustache and he wore a purple suit that match his tophat. "Come on you," he grumbled as the eagle kept trying to get away. "I need you to show the city why I'm the right choice for mayor!" The bird didn't listen and flew away from the simpleton. The eagle flew around aimlessly as the big skyscrapers were confusing it.
It started flying low on the sidewalk, right where the cockapoo was standing. Terrified of the eagle, the pup made a run for it with the confused bird flying after her. Several people on the street got out of the way of the rogue bird and frightened pup, who was yelping for help.
"Get that bird away from me!" she cried. She was getting tired of running and tried to find somewhere to hide. Her eyes darted left and right until she saw the high school. Not stopping to question what the building was for, the cockapoo made a beeline for the school doors.
Fortunately for the pup, someone was walking back inside, leaving her just enough time to run in just before the door closed, leaving the eagle outside. Now that she was saved, the cockapoo took a minute to catch her breath and look around. She could see lockers and some doors leading to classrooms.
The cockapoo couldn't see the person that opened the door she got in through, so it was unlikely she'd find him or her to get out. Just then, the bell rang and students started pouring out of the different rooms, none of them taking notice of the pup. Thankfully due to her size, she managed to slip past their legs, though she did get hit a few times.
When the stampede of students started dying down, the cockapoo thought she was in the clear until she collided with a certain young boy. Ryder looked down and saw the lost pup. "Hey, what are you doing in here?" he questioned.
"Um… I was trying to escape an eagle," the pup said.
"An eagle?"
"Yeah. Some man was trying to put it into a cage, but it flew away. And it tried chasing me."
"The city isn't a place for a wild animal like an eagle. Much like how the school isn't the place for a pup." Ryder and the cockapoo walked towards the exit of the school, where the human opened it for the pup to get out.
"Thanks," the pup spoke. She quickly ran down the sidewalk as Ryder closed the door and finish his last class of the day.
Ryder soon biked home after he was done with school. When he put his bike in the garage, he could hear Chase running around inside barking. He also heard another pup, which confused the boy. Walking inside, Ryder saw Chase run past the door with Marshall running after him. When the Dalmatian glanced back at the boy, he didn't look where he was going and ran straight into the refrigerator.
"Ow," he muttered.
"Are you okay, Marshall?" Chase asked.
"I'm good." Ryder walked over to the new pup, still a bit confused. Chase decided to catch him up to speed.
"Hey, Ryder. Sam thought she'd get me a new friend to keep me company while you were at school. This is Marshall."
"Hi," the said Dalmatian spoke.
Ryder smiled as he bent down to shake Marshall's paw. "Nice to meet you, Marshall," the boy spoke. "Have you seen mom?"
"She's upstairs getting a new spot ready for Marshall."
"Alright, I'll go check with her." Ryder quickly ran towards the stairs while the pups continued playing around.
Samantha was just setting out a temporary bed of pillows for Marshall right next to Chase's bed. She heard her son running upstairs and looked towards the door just as he walked in. "Welcome home, Ryder," she said. "Have you met Marshall?"
"Yeah. He seems like a nice pup."
"Yes, just a little clumsy. Chase and I found him at the Porter Cafe. You can say he just happened to run into us." Ryder nodded as he looked at Marshall's temporary bed. He then placed his backpack down beside his bed as he took out his sketch pad.
"I thought about Chase's situation. And I've sketched a couple of ideas of what kind of gear he could have." He showed the sketches that he drew, impressing his mother.
"Very creative. How about we show Chase?" Ryder agreed and they walked downstairs and grabbed the pups' attention to show the backpacks that were in the sketchbook. Both the German shepherd and Dalmatian were amazed by the details they saw.
"This looks so cool!" Marshall commented.
"I'm glad you like it," Ryder responded. "I'm thinking I'm going to try and finish my tablet before I get started on these packs." Ryder walked away to tinker with his tablet as Samantha switched on the TV.
Footage quickly showed an eagle flying around the streets aimlessly while people were running around trying to escape. "People have been terrified of the rogue Eagle that had shown up out of nowhere. The reason for its appearance is yet unknown."
Ryder poked his head back into the room to see more clips of footage of the eagle's rampage from multiple witness recordings. Including one that showed the cockapoo, he helped in school. "Hey, I've seen that pup," he commented.
"You did?" Chase asked.
"Yeah, she said that the eagle was being forced into a cage by some man with a mustache in a suit. Unfortunately, it escaped and you can see the rest is history."
"What would that man be trying to use that eagle for?" Samantha questioned.
"Beats me. I just hope that pup is okay." Ryder went back to getting started on his tablet leaving his mother and the pups fairly confused.
