You'll be in my Heart
Luz lay in her bed in the Owl House, staring up at the glow in the dark star stickers that Eda had let her put up. The Collector had gone home; Belos had been defeated; and families had been reunited. Gus, Willow, and Amity had all gone home with their dads, happy to be back together after so long apart. Everything was quiet. Too quiet. She could hear Stringbean snoring on her pillow and her mother's deep breaths on the other side of the room. But something felt off and she didn't know what. Groaning quietly, she threw off her blanket and tiptoed out of her room. Maybe a glass of water would help.
She carefully pushed open the door next to her's, finding Lilith curled up in her bed with Hooty, the best friends happy to be together once more. She smiled and continued. The door across the hall gave her Hunter and Darius on matching mattresses on the floor. Darius's abomination wiggled like Stringbean and gave off a light purple glow that flowed over the room. She closed the door and went into the bathroom. She leaned on the sink before drinking straight from the faucet. Luz spluttered and felt her legs began to shake. She had forgotten to check on Eda, King, and Raine!
Without turning off the water, she dashed down the hall until she stood in front of Eda's massive wooden doors. She was shaking and, as much as she wanted to make sure they were all right, she still didn't want to wake them all. Once her hands felt a little more steady, she pushed open the door.
All she could see in the nest was the top of Raine's mint green hair. She took a couple of steps forward before she noticed the quiet humming. Someone was awake. She leaned up on her tiptoes to see into the nest. Eda was tucked securely against Raine's chest in a sweetheart hold, her head tucked under their chin and her good hand resting on their chest. King was curled up at Raine's other side, the top of his head resting on their hip. Luz sighed. Raine opened their eyes and looked up at her.
"Hey, Kid. You ok?"
She stiffened and nodded. They blinked at her. Luz shook her head. She began to shake again. Raine offered her a small smile before offering their hand. She scurried forward and carefully slid down the side of the nest. She shoved King onto Raine's belly before curling into their side.
"Nightmares?"
Luz shook her head and pressed her face into their shoulder, "I just…needed to make sure everyone was ok. I'm sorry if I woke you when I was running around."
"Nah." They shook their head, careful not to jostle Eda, "I…couldn't sleep ether."
Luz nodded, "Do you see…him?"
Raine hummed. They tightened their hold on Eda and draped their other arm around Luz's shoulders. Luz wiggled closer.
"Let's talk about something else." She whispered, "Do you…know any songs from the human realm?"
"I do, actually." Raine rest their cheek against the top of Eda's head and smiled down at Luz, "Music is one of the things that end up here the most. Humans are always losing or throwing away different types of music. I can't imagine why."
Luz shrugged, "I guess as we started streaming more and more music, people started getting rid of the physical stuff. And thrown away stuff tends to end up here."
They nodded, "Yeah. It does. But I can think of a few very special things that came over as well." They squeezed her shoulder, "A pretty special kid to name one."
Luz smiled and rest her cheek against Raine's shoulder. Raine toyed with her hair for a moment before they started humming again. Luz sighed.
"Come stop your crying,
It will be alright.
Just take my hand,
Hold it tight."
Luz smiled and reached over her shoulder to take their hand. Raine chuckled even as they sang.
"I will protect you
From all around you.
I will be here
Don't you cry."
Luz reached over and pulled King up so she could hold him. Somehow, the baby titan didn't wake up.
"For one so small
You seem so strong."
Raine tightened their hold on their family and rubbed their cheek against Eda's hair.
"My arms will hold you
Keep you safe and warm.
This bond between us
Can't be broken."
Luz went limp against their chest, head tucked under Eda's chin and arms wrapped around King.
"I will be here
Don't you cry."
Raine leaned their head back, letting Eda's head rock back and the children curl closer.
"'Cause you'll be in my heart
Yes, you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more."
Their eyes drifted close and they could feel the tension finally easing out of their body.
"You'll be in my heart
No matter what they say
You'll be here in my heart
Always…"
The next morning, Eda woke to the deep breaths of her family around her. When had Luz crawled into the nest? King was tucked under Luz's chin, her own arm draped over his belly. And Raine looked completely relaxed despite being trapped under her and her children, holding her with one arm and Luz with the other. Eda smiled and stroked King's head as she nuzzled closer to Raine. Luz whimpered and curled closer to Raine. They tightened their hold on her and Eda felt the arm around her waist tighten as well. Raine groaned and pressed their cheek closer to the crown of her head before relaxing once more. Maybe a little longer in bed wouldn't hurt. She didn't want to wake Raine and the kids but she didn't want to frighten Camila with Luz missing.
