They were walking down the street and Saguru was painfully aware of the distance between the two of them.
Shinichi - how he called him only in his head, never saying it out loud as they definitely weren't on first name terms yet - and Mouri-san were almost touching as they walked side by side. Why wouldn't they? After all they were childhood sweethearts, weren't they? It was so obvious they'd end up together.
He was getting more twitchy as the seconds went by and the only thing that kept him from bolting - so he wouldn't have to observe their minute interactions anymore - was the presence of his father next to him sending him suspicious looks. Let's not mention the others either.
Saguru thought he'd die of embarrassment if he ran for no apparent reason.
How he wished now that Shinichi's usual bad luck would flare up and they'd end up examining a corpse rather than idle chatting about these unimportant tidbits here.
Saguru noticed - how couldn't he - that Shinichi stopped all of a sudden with a thoughtful look on his face.
He felt his chest clench as Shinichi first looked at Mouri-san then back at the others walking behind them. He would have liked to believe he was looking at him but he knew better than that. He turned his gaze from them to the cold drink shop they were just about to pass by, then as if deciding something he started walking towards it with - he observed oh, so many times - self confident steps.
Everyone looked at each other in confusion while Mouri-san ran after Shinichi asking what's wrong. Saguru did not move, just watched it all with a blank - his poker face in full use - uninterested look .
For some reason Shinichi seemed to ignore the girl's inquiries - his own girl's inquiries - in favor of ordering the drink he sought.
They were ready fast. Maybe too fast for his own comfort.
He wasn't ready just yet, to see them show their affection for each other oh, so blatantly what only they themselves didn't realize. Everyone gave one another an amused look - obviously they thought the same way as Saguru did - and looked forward to their fiery teen spirited interactions... but nothing of the sort did happen.
To everyone's baffle Shinichi simply walked around Mouri-san - two drinks in hand - and with steady steps walked back towards them.
He stopped just right before Saguru and - to his utter surprise and bewilderment that must have shown on his face as Shinichi gave him an awkward smile - held out one of the drinks towards him. It was a fancy english iced tea that he always wanted to try out whenever he saw the advertisement on his phone but never got the chance to - as something always came up: a case or a certain annoying magician - .
He blinked down at the drink then back up at the face in front of him once again - yes he still kept the same expression and yes he was still offering HIM of all people the beverage - and something warm and fuzzy filled his chest as he reached towards the drink. Giving back his own awkward smile - tugging just at the corner of his lips - but nonetheless grateful, he took the drink.
As their fingers brushed he felt as if an electric current passed through him, not like he minded.
After seeing him accept his offer of - probably of a friendship declaration, Saguru wasn't sure - as if content Shinichi turned around and under Mouri-san's questioning gaze he started walking again, towards their intended destination.
Saguru thought this day may not be as bad as he expected it to be, and continued to walk forward with a tiny smile tugging at the corner of his lips...
