Flashback
Luz and Hunter sat outside the principal's office, with worried looks on their faces. Inside the office was their mother, Camila, having a discussion with the school principal, Hal, on the events that happened earlier that day. Both sat in silence, reflecting on the things they did. Luz was sad that Tiffany had to ruin her book report and Hunter stared at his hands, still not believing that he fought and beat Nathan. Luz looked over at his brother, "You okay Hunter?" she said in a worried tone.
Hunter snapped out of his thoughts. "Y-yeah, I'm good." he said as he looked at the office door. "We are so in for it now."
Inside the office, Principal Hal sat at his desk with a worried look as Camila sat nervously in her chair. "Ms. Noceda, you know that I have your children's best interests in mind and I want them to succeed in their education. But I'm sorry to say that today has been the final straw and I can't just treat this with a slap on the wrist." He said as he pulled out a brochure for Reality Check Summer Camp. "I suggest enrolling them here for the summer."
Camila looked at the brochure. "Hal, don't you think this might be excessive?" She asked.
"Camila, Luz brought wild snakes on campus and Hunter got into a vicious fight with a fellow student. If anything, one could say that they deserve a more severe punishment, especially Hunter." Hal said. Camila grimaced as he brought up a good point. Hal sighed. " Camila, something has to be done and that brochure could be the help they need."
End of Flashback
Hunter and Luz stood in front of their house, with annoyed and sad looks on their faces along with a black backpack and blue messenger bag respectively. Their mother told them that both of them would be attending summer camp as a result of their actions yesterday, much to their shock. Camila stepped outside the house with her veterinarian uniform on and walked towards them. "Oh my babies." she said as she hugged both her children. "Now, don't worry. Summer camp is only going to be for three months. You two will be so busy, talking to new people, making friends, balancing checkbooks and learning to... appreciate public radio, the time will fly by." she said, trying to lift their spirits up.
"But I don't like any of that stuff. I like editing anime clips to music and—and reading fantasy books with convoluted backstories." Luz said as she showed her Good Witch Azura book to her mom.
"Heh, weeb." Hunter said, causing Luz to sneer at him.
"Mija, your fantasy world is holding you back. Do you have any friends? Real ones, not imagined or drawn… or reptilian?" Camila said. Luz was about to retort but then she realized that her mom had a point. She looked down in disappointment. "And Hunter, have you tried to make friends this school year?" Camila asked her son.
"Well, no… because I don't feel like it." Hunter replied.
"Mijo, living a life alone is not something to enjoy. I'm not asking to make a hundred friends, just one, please." she said to him. Hunter had a sad look on his face as he thought about his lack of social life. "Summer camp is a chance for both of you to make some friends, but you have to try. Can you two do that?"
"Sí Mamá." The two teens replied.
Camila gave them a smile before she noticed her phone vibrating in her purse. "Oh. I gotta go to work. The bus is coming soon. Text me when both of you get there." She said before kissing their foreheads and entering her van. "Cuídense mucho, niños. ¡Qué les vaya bien!" She said before driving off to work.
"Bye Mom." The two of them said as they waved goodbye. Luz looked at her book with a hint of sadness. "You're really going to take your book with you to camp?" Hunter said.
"Yes I am, because this book is a part of who I am." She said, "Nothing is going to separate me from the Good Witch Azura." She proclaimed as she raised her book in the air. Shortly after she said that, a small brown owl swiftly flew down and took her book away. Both teenagers stood in shock as they processed what just happened. "Did that owl just take my book?" Luz asked.
"Yup." Hunter replied.
Both of them looked to where the owl landed, which was near a large bag. It put the book inside, grabbed the bag and flew into the woods.
"Tiny thief, come back here!" Luz yelled as she gave chase.
"Luz wait!" Hunter said as he chased after her.
Luz chased the owl down a dirt path as it flew inside an abandoned run down house. She stopped, which allowed Hunter to catch up to her. She growled before running inside. "Luz hold up." Hunter said as he ran inside. Unknown to the two of them, a bright light glowed inside the house for a brief moment before dying down.
Hunter and Luz stepped out of a door and into the inside of a tent as they followed the owl. "Stop flying away you- what the?" Luz said as both teens noticed the area around them, which was filled with a bunch of random items, both big and small. "Whoa. I thought I had a lot of weird stuff, but this? This is impressive." She said as she picked up a doll.
"I'm getting a feeling we shouldn't be here. Let's go back Luz." Hunter said as he grabbed her wrist, but Luz pulled away.
"No, I'm not leaving until I get my book." she said.
"Finally, you're back." an older female voice said. The teens quickly hid before slowly approaching the tent's entrance. They moved the flap of the tent as they saw a tall, slender woman with ivory skin and long, thick, untamed, two toned gray hair. She wore a sleeveless, two-tone maroon dress with a ripped hem design, gray leggings and maroon high heeled boots, on her head she wore a dark green bandana with yellow spots. The owl the teens were following laid the bag on a table in front of her before flying on top of a staff she was holding. "Now let's see what we've got here." The woman said as she turned the owl around, which became a fixture on her staff. Both teens gasped at what they saw.
The woman rummaged through the bag and took out a mint condition smartphone. "Garbage." She said as she threw it away. She then pulled out a ring with a large diamond on it. "Garbage." She said as she threw it away. She pulled out a golden chalice that was shining brightly. "Garbage." Like the two items before, she threw it away. The woman let out a gasp. "Now this…" she said as she pulled out a pair of joke glasses, turned around, and wore them as the spring eyes hung from the glasses. The Noceda siblings got a good look at her face. Her eyes were golden, she wore a pair of golden spherical earrings, her lips were a maroon color, she had a gold fang, long orange nails on her hands with a large gold spherical ring on her right hand, on her chest was an oval amber gem. "This will make me rich." The woman pulled out Luz's book from the bag. "And this... Oh, this will make good kindling." She said as she held it above a lit candle.
Luz gasped, not wanting her book to be burned, she ran out of the tent and grabbed the book from the woman and stuffed it in her messenger bag. "Excuse me, sorry, it's mine, thank you." She said. Hunter quickly ran out and grabbed her wrist. "Let's go sis." He said as they ran back inside the tent and towards the door. To their shock, the door folds up before they could walk through it and disappears. They turned around and saw the woman holding a key with a large yellow eye. She took off the glasses. "You two are not going anywhere." She said in a stern voice.
The two teens duck out from under the tent to escape. They ran and stopped just at the edge of a cliff, and were shocked at what they saw. They saw a large, medieval style town with giant hands and teeth architecture below them with various creatures living out their routines. Both saw a dragon fly over the town, spewing out a fire breath in the sky before being grabbed by a large hand. Both of them slowly backed away from the cliff, they didn't know where they were, but the two knew it was no longer on Earth.
"Oh, no, no, no, no! What's going on?" Luz said worryingly.
"Looks like we're not in Kansas anymore." Hunter said as he looked around.
Luz shrieked as a small fairy flew to her. "Oh, hello, little fairy. Are you going to tell me this is all a fantastical dream my brother and I are somehow both in?" She said nervously.
"Give me your skin!" The fairy yelled as it revealed its large mouth and sharp teeth. Luz screamed, which caused Hunter to slap away the fairy from her. "Back off!" He said. "Where are we? Did we die? Are we in… Hell? "Luz said in a frightened tone as the two huddled together. Both of them felt a hand touch their shoulders, revealing the same woman from before. "You wish." She said.
Later, Luz and Hunter were sitting on stools by the same tent from earlier. "I'm so sorry! I just wanted my book! Please don't eat my skin!" She said in a worried tone.
"Lay a finger on my sister and I will end you! Right here, right now!" Hunter threatened the woman.
"Eat you? Why would I eat a potential customer?" The woman said. The two looked at her in confusion before she put a green croc on the table. "Can I offer you both a human foot filled with holes?" She said before showing a men's deodorant stick. "A bar of green human candy?" She put it down on the table before pulling out a small portable TV. "Oh, oh! How about this black shadow box that reflects only sadness?"
Luz laughed. "That's not all it can do. Here, let me see it." She said as she grabbed the TV and a pair of batteries nearby. She put them in the battery slot and turned on the TV, displaying an 80s home exercise video. "Voilà!" Luz said.
Several creatures, who were customers, gathered around the TV with heavy interest. "I'll pay 40 snails for the screaming box!" One said as he held up a couple of green bills. "I'll give you a hundred!" Another said as he held up more bills. "Can I eat the tiny person inside?" Another asked. The crowd soon began to place bids on the TV. The woman was impressed, she hadn't had this many customers at her table and this girl managed to attract a crowd within minutes. She looked at Luz with interest. "What did you say your name was?" She asked.
"I'm Luz. Luz Noceda." She said before putting her arm around Hunter. "And this is my brother, Hunter Noceda."
"Well, Luz, that was pretty clever... for a human." The woman said she took the money that the crowd was offering.
"That's kind of a weird thing for another human to say." Luz said.
"Oh, dear child, I'm not like you." She said as she took off her bandana, revealing pointed ears similar to Hunter. The two gasped as the woman stood on top of the table. "I'm Eda the Owl Lady, the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles!"
"A witch?" Luz asked in wonder.
"Whaaaat?" Hunter said in confusion.
"I am a respected, feared-" Eda continued.
"Busted!" A rough stern voice interrupted Eda as a large fist smashed the TV. The siblings hid as the crowd ran away, revealing a large coven guard. He held up Eda's wanted poster. "Eda the Owl Lady, you are wanted for misuse of magic and demonic misdemeanors." The guard said. "You are hereby ordered to come with me to the Conformatorium."
"Whoa, witch criminal." Luz said as she peeked over the edge of the table.
"Luz, get down." Hunter warned.
"Would you guys quit following me around? I haven't done squat." Eda said in an annoyed tone.
The guard noticed the two teens and grabbed Hunter by the handle of his black backpack and Luz by her hoodie. "And both of you are coming too, for fraternizing with a criminal." He said.
"Wh-What? That's not cool!" Luz said.
"Hey! Let us go!" Hunter warned.
"Oh, all right, all right, you win. Just let me get my stuff." Eda said. However, she grabbed her staff from under the table and swung it at the guard, knocking him down and dropping the two teens. Eda spun and tapped the bottom of it on the table, causing all her items to float in the air around her. Hunter and Luz rose up from the floor and looked at the sight in front of them in awe. "Whoops. Can't forget this." Eda said as she pulled out the key from earlier and pressed the eye. The portal door briefcase flew into her hand as she commanded the tablecloth to wrap around her items and tied itself into a bundle. She stuck her staff through it as she began to run. "Follow me you two."
The two teens followed Eda as they ran away from the guard. "This is crazy. If I die here, my mom's gonna kill me!" Luz said.
"Mom will kill me if I let you die!" Hunter said.
"Ha! I won't let 'em hurt you. A human and a witch like you two are much more valuable to me alive than dead." Eda said, which confused the two at what she said.
"Wait. What's that supposed to-" Luz said before Eda grabbed her and Hunter and jumped on her staff, flying away from the pursuing guard.
"You won't get away with this, Owl Lady!" The guard said as he watched the group fly away.
"You can open your eyes now, you two." Eda said. The two teens did that and gripped the staff hard as they saw they were flying high in the air.
"Flying staffs, crazy monsters, you're a witch!" Luz said in shock.
"What is this place?!" Hunter said in confusion.
"This is the Boiling Isles. Every myth you humans have is caused by a little of our world leaking into yours." Eda said as they flew over the wilderness, seeing various flying creatures around them. A large griffin, similar to Luz's design back home, flew next to them.
"A griffin!" Luz said as she watched it puke up a batch of spiders. "Ha, I knew it. I was right!" She said as she looked at Hunter, who watched in disgust.
"Still doesn't make it any less disgusting!" He retorted.
"Yep. Griffins, vampires, giraffes-" Eda said.
"Wait giraffes?" Hunter asked.
"Oh, yeah. We banished those guys. Bunch of freaks." Eda said as all three landed on the ground. The three got off the staff, but the teens noticed Eda's detached hand still on it. The two yelled as Eda grabbed her hand and reattached it to her arm. "Oops, that happens sometimes." She said calmly.
"Well, I've had enough adventure for today. This is clearly not a PG fantasy world. So, can you help us get back home?" Hunter said.
"Only if you help me first." Eda chuckled as she picked her staff and walked away, with her item bag following her in the air. "Ah, now, come along, you two." Having no other option, the two did just that.
All three walked to a large house made from white brick with a sloping blue roof. A stained glass window above the door, designed as a large orange demon eye. A crumbling stone tower with orange moss growing to the rear left of it. "Whoa." Luz said as Hunter just stared, mouth agape. Though he looked over his shoulder. "Hey lady, aren't you worried about those guards finding us?" He said.
Eda smiled. "Nope. My house has a state-of-the-art defense system." She said as they walked to the door, which had a sentient owl face on it.
"Hoot-hoot! Password, please!" It said in a squeaky voice. Eda, however, poked both of its eyes in response. "Aah!"
"We got no time for this, Hooty. Let us in." She said.
"All right, all right! Geez! You never want to have any fun! Ow! Hoot!" Hooty said in an annoyed tone. Hooty opens his mouth wide enough to completely cover the door.
"Anyone else find this completely disturbing?" Hunter asked. Eda and Luz entered without a thought. "No, I'm the only normal one here? Alright." He said as he walked in as well. Hooty closes his mouth and burps.
"Welcome to…" Eda said as she snapped her fingers, causing the candles to ignite, a fire in the fireplace along with a cauldron stirring itself, and a broom started to sweep the floor. Overhead, a depiction of an owl beast began to glow, emitting a great screeching noise. "The Owl House." She finished as Luz and Hunter started around the room in awe.
"Where I hide away from the pressures of modern life." She said as she threw away her bag. "Also the cops. Mm, also ex-boyfriends."
"Wait, someone like you gets dates?" Hunter asked.
"Yeah. You'd be surprised how many guys are into older chicks, especially the younger ones nowadays." Eda said, giving him a wink. Hunter looked away, feeling awkward. Eda chuckled.
"This place is beautiful! Do you live here all alone?" Luz said as she put her book down on a coffee table. However, loud footsteps began to shake the house.
"Actually, I have a roommate." Eda said, seemingly oblivious to the house shaking.
"Who dares intrude upon I," A deep voice growled from the hallway, but then it turned into a high pitched childish voice. "the king of demons?" Revealing a small fox-like creature with purplish dark gray fur, with a gray colored stomach and tail tip. On his head was a canine skull with two horns, one of them was broken in half. On his head was a baby blue towel with yellow baby ducks and hearts, wearing a red collar with a gold tag along with a similar towel around his waist. He held up a rubber duck and squeezed it twice, causing it to squeak.
Luz gasped in joy while Hunter stood there with a surprised look. "¡Ay, que lindo!" Luz said as she ran and picked up the fox creature in her arms, knocking off his towels, and began to hug him. "Eda, he's so cute! Who's a widdle guy? Who's a widdle guy? Is it you? Is it you?" She said as she babied him, causing the creature great discomfort.
"No! I don't know who your little guy is!" The creature said as he tried to escape.
Hunter joined Luz as the teen boy began to pet him. "Wow, I always wanted a walking, talking dog as a pet." He chuckled.
"No! There's two of them! Eda, who are these monsters!" The creature yelled, still trying to escape.
Eda laughed before dragging the two teens away from her roommate. "King, this is Luz, the human and her witch brother, Hunter. They're here to help us with our little... situation."
"Hooray." King cheered.
Hunter looked at Eda in confusion. "Wait, what did you just say about me?"
"You're a witch, Hunter. How do you not know that?" Eda said.
"Because I'm not a witch. I'm human like Luz, with an odd deformity." He said as he covered his ears.
"Nope, you're a witch like me." Eda said. Hunter was about to retort but she continued to talk. "Anyways on to our problem." She said as she summoned a circle to display her story. "King was once a mighty king of demons, until his Crown of Power was stolen, and he became this."
"You mean this little bundle of joy?" Luz said as she hugged King.
"The crown is being held by the evil Warden Wrath" The circle showed a large humanoid creature wearing a dark gray cowl with a small gold fastened over a beaked mask with yellow lenses. He wore a white sleeveless tunic with brass buttons, a brown leather belt with a brass buckle, and black trousers tucked into dark purple shoes. The Warden Wrath held the crown in his hands. "and locked away behind a magical force field that only a human can break through." The circle faded away as Eda finished telling her story. "If you help us retrieve his crown, we'll send you two back to your realm. So whaddya say?" Eda said. She then picked up King by his head. "Plus, who could say no to this cute face?" She said as she shook him.
"No! Please don't encourage her! Nyeh!" King said as he freed himself.
"We're kinda your only way home." Eda said.
"So we don't really have a choice, do we?" Luz said.
"Yeah we do sis. It's just that the other choice involves a hands on approach." Hunter said as he cracked his knuckles. "You go after the fox thing, I'll handle the crazy lady."
"Oh, do you really want to test me kid? I may be old but I know my way around a fight." Eda smirked.
"I'm not afraid to throw hands, especially if it involves protecting my sister." Hunter retorted as he tightened his fists.
"Kid, we can get you two back home. Plus I handled that big guy back at my stand, dealing with you would be a walk in the park." She said.
Hunter knew she had a point. Eda had shown that she could handle herself well when it came to fighting. He looked over to Luz. Even though he wanted to protect her, he secretly knew that he would just put her in danger if him and Eda fought. She was right, they didn't really have a choice. Hunter stood down and sighed. "Alright… what's the plan?"
So here we go, the Noceda siblings are officially in the Demon Realm. I do have plans on how I'm going to develop Hunter using magic since the lore on the grimwalkers isn't that well explained. So that gives me more room on how he will use magic. Though I'm interested on what you guys think.
Leave a review, I like to see what you guys think about it so far.
