Chapter Two
I blinked several times, staring at the boy standing in front of me, before finally asking,
"Henry… What are you doing in the middle of the woods? By yourself, no less." Henry mirrored my expression, confused with a hint of worry, as he asked me,
"Looking for someone. What are you doing in the woods?" My lips curved into a frown as I told him,
"I come out here to camp around this time every month. I like the woods. Now who exactly are you looking for?"
"This is where you come every month?" One of my blonde eyebrows rose towards the boy, wondering why Regina wouldn't have told him? It's not like I hadn't been doing this since I was little, it shouldn't seem like such a secret.
"Yes. But seriously Henry, who are you looking for?"
"Prince Charming! Mary Margret woke him up, and they think he wandered into the woods." I blinked once more at the boy, taking a step closer.
"Who is he in this world? And who is 'they'?"
"A John Doe coma patient. And they would be my mom and Graham." A sharp exhale escaped my nose, before I asked Henry,
"Your mom meaning Emma, right?" As he nodded, I realized that I really needed to learn a way to clarify which mom he was talking about. "And let me guess, they told you to stay home?"
"No…"
"You should know better then to lie to me munchkin. Come on, let's go find them." It really didn't take us long to find the groups, probably because I spend so much time camping out in the woods, and soon Henry was running down a hill to meet them. So with another sigh, I followed the kid at a much slower pace.
"Henry!"
"Did you find him yet?"
"No, not yet. You shouldn't be here." Chuckling I told the woman,
"It's absolutely no use, he's going to do whatever he wants to. Might as well let him stay."
"Sage, what are you doing here?" I gave Mary Margret a glance, and small smile, as I turned towards her.
"I was out camping and found the munchkin. Couldn't very well let him wander around alone. Though he really shouldn't be out here." I gave the boy a pointed look, to which he responded,
"I can help. I know where he's going."
"And where's that?"
"He's looking for you. You're the one who woke him up. You're the last one he saw. He wants to find you!" I gave Henry a glance, wondering if maybe the man was looking for Mary Margret, I mean who else would you look for when you've been in a coma for so long?
"Henry, it's not about me. I just… I think he's lost and confused. He's been in a coma a long time."
"But he loves you! You need to stop chasing him and let him find you." I glanced towards Henry, wondering why that phrase sounded so familiar.
"Kid. You need to go home. Where's your mom? She's going to kill me, and then you… and then me again." Choking down a chuckle, knowing what Emma had said about Regina was true; I looked back at Henry again, my own curiosity wanting to be filled.
"She dropped me at the house. Then, went right out." I frowned a bit at that. Normally Regina watches Henry like a hawk. The only exception being when she was with Graham, which wasn't possible due to the fact he was with our little group, or when she was plotting something.
"Well, we need to get you back immediately."
"No!" I silently agreed with Henry, nodding my head, thinking that he was better off with us then alone in that house. Plus, he would just sneak right back out.
"Guys!" A large gasp made its way through my lips as I noticed the John Doe's bloodied hospital bracelet on the ground.
"Is that…"
"Blood." We all exchanged weary glances, before we continued searching for the man in silence. It wasn't long until I was in the front of the group, helping Graham with the mystery man's trail. After all, I knew these woods just as much as Graham, if not better. It wasn't too long until we were approaching the area with the Toll Bridge.
"Where is he? Can you see him?" I was mildly concerned by the worry covering Mary Margret's face, and voice. She didn't know the man, did she?
"The trail dies at the water line." I nodded my head in agreement, before stating,
"Which means he's got to be near by." A quick look at the shore revealed the mystery man.
"Oh my god! Oh my God! Oh my god!" Within seconds Graham had his phone out and was calling the hospital.
"I need an ambulance! At the old Toll Bridge, as soon as possible." I quickly helped the others pull out the mystery man, wondering silently who he was. And why Mary Margret was so emotional towards him.
"No, no, no, no, no! No, no, no! I found you!" Once again, that phrasing resonated in me. Why did it sound so familiar? It felt like it was nagging at the back of my brain, as if it were something I should remember.
"It's going to be okay."
"Help's coming."
"Don't worry, Charming should be fine." Where the hell had that nickname come from?
"Is he okay?" My attention quickly transferred to Henry, concerned. I could figure out where the hell that nickname had come from later, but Henry was more important at the moment.
"Henry…"
"Is he going to be okay?
"Henry, don't look. Okay? Don't look."
"Come back to us. Come back to me."
"Please Peter! Don't leave me here! Please, come back!"
"You saved me." I blinked in shock, wondering just what that was. I didn't know any Peter's. Not to mention that I completely zoned out for a solid minute or two, something I have never done in my life.
"She did it. She did it! She woke him up." I blinked several times, before focusing on the scene in front of me. Charming was okay, and I could worry about whatever that was later; once he was safely back in the hospital.
"Yeah, kid. She did."
"Thank you."
"Who are you?"
"I don't know."
"It's okay. You're going to be okay." I smiled softly at the two, somehow feeling that this was the way things were meant to be. These two, for whatever reason, seemed to belong together.
It didn't take too much longer until the ambulance arrived, nor did it seem to take very long for any of us to arrive at the hospital, where we all watched through a glass wall as four doctors treated Mr. Charming.
"David! David, is that you?" I watched, surprised, as a blonde woman rushed towards Mr. Charming.
"Excuse me, ma'am?"
"Oh my god…"
"Ma'am, you can't be in here. Please, you can't be here right now."
"David…" Did this woman know Charming? For some reason that didn't seem right, but what do I know?
"You can't be here, ma'am. Can you wait over here for a second, okay?"
"Who is that?" Was it just me, or did Mary Margret sound almost… territorial? Then again, I'd be pretty upset if some random woman was allowed in the room of the man whose life I just saved.
"His wife." I twirled around to stare at Regina, fighting back the urge to growl at the woman. His wife? What kind of wife leaves their husband unclaimed in a hospital, in a coma? "His name is David Nolan. And that's his wife, Kathryn." Kathryn? His wife? This just seems a little too convenient to me… "And the joy on her face, well, it's put me in quite the forgiving mood. We'll talk about your insubordination later. Do you know what insubordination means? It means you're grounded." Henry didn't look very pleased at the prospect of being grounded, but he did leave to wander around the woods alone, so it is kind of his own fault.
"Thank you. Thank you for finding my David."
"Um, I… I don't understand. You didn't… You didn't know that he was here in a coma?" I gave a nod towards Mary Margret, glad that somebody was voicing what we were all thinking.
"A few years ago, David and I were not getting along. It was my fault; I know that now. I was difficult and unsupportive. I told him if he didn't like things, he could leave. And he did. And I didn't stop him. It was the worst mistake I ever made."
"It was the worst mistake I've ever made." I couldn't make eye contact with her, knowing how she felt about true love. Which is why I wouldn't meet her eyes, even when she asked,
"Falling in love? How could that ever be a mistake?" A soft snort escaped my mouth at her question.
"Not everyone is as accepting as you are." I paused, only momentarily, as I finally met my friend's dark eyes. "Not everyone gets their happily ever after Snow, Peter taught me that."
I blinked rapidly, while glancing around warily. Something was happening to me, and I haven't the faintest what. But whatever it was didn't seem to be a good thing; spacing off and having strangely vivid daydreams really weren't something I did. Or have ever done. Maybe I should go talk to Dr. Hopper?
"That's wonderful." I blinked my eyes, looking in Mary Margret's direction, feeling that I had just missed a large chunk of the conversation. Maybe I wasn't getting enough sleep? Maybe I should stay in the woods a little longer? That usually helps when I'm having sleeping problems…
"Well, it's something of a miracle."
"He's, okay?" I turned towards Dr. Whale, oddly curious about Charming's health.
"Ah, physically, he's on the mend, um, his memory is another issue. It may take time, if at all." I nodded, still a little distracted by my thoughts, knowing that he must have hit his head pretty bad.
"What brought him back?"
"That's the thing. There's no explanation. Something just clicked in him."
"He just got up and decided to go for a stroll?" I blinked once more, trying to focus on the conversation, and ignore the urge to get back to my campsite.
"He woke up and he was delirious, and his first instinct was to go find something, I guess."
"Someone." Henry's comment seemed to go unnoticed, as Kathryn asked,
"Can I see him?"
"Yeah, of course." My eyes followed Kathryn, until she was back in Charming… I mean, David's room. Why was I still calling him Charming?
"Henry, let's go."
"Wait, my backpack." I watched as Henry grabbed his backpack and whispered something to Mary Margret. It seemed to have gone unnoticed by the other two women in the room, but they certainly noticed when Mary Margret let out,
"Henry…"
"He was going to the Troll Bridge. It's like the end of the story." Mary Margret frowned slightly, before gently telling Henry,
"Henry, he was going there because it's the last thing I read to him."
"No, it's because you belong together." I might have agreed with Henry, even though I have no clue why, but I wasn't exactly going to voice that out loud. After all, David was a married man.
"Henry." We all watched Regina and Henry leave, and they were shortly followed Emma, who ran after them. After a moment of watching Mary Margret stare threw the glass window at the married couple, I stepped forward.
"You know what Mary Margret? Life sucks sometimes. But I don't have a doubt in the world that you'll find your own happy ending." The dark hair woman in front of me gave me a soft smile, and a thank you, before we parted ways.
