"So how is she doing doctor?"
Vestal looks up from the tablet, displaying the results from the checkup. "She's doing well physically, although the tensions have taken a toll on her mentally. I'd recommend some rest and a better diet."
Yorktown looks confused, focusing her attention on me. "But I thought she was eating better, at least after the last checkup."
"I was... but then I got caught up with work again, and didn't bother to get more food on break."
Yorktown steps to the side, revealing me in full to Vestal, while turning to address me directly. "I told you that you need to eat more, it's having a bad effect on your health."
I look down, responding to the concerned ship in front of me, hoping to spare myself of her motherly wrath. " Sigh... You're right, sorry Mom."
Vestal, sensing the tension, attempts to lighten the mood. "Y'know, despite the difference in diet and personalities, you two look almost identical."
True to her words, the Carrier in question looked just like her mother, only 5'7", smaller in bust (slightly smaller than Hornet), and her left eye pure white, pupil and all. Her white hair is loose, down to her shoulders. Her outfit is similar to Akagi's, only with purple accents instead of red.
Yorktown looks up to Vestal once more, responding with a disappointed tone, "Yeah, but it doesn't mean she has to take after Enterprise's eating, it's a bad habit. Regardless…"
She looks down at me, giving me a glare that only mothers could give, chilling me to the bone. "This will be the last time, right? Reprisal?"
"Y-yes mom."
She suddenly looks back up at Vestal, quickly carrying on with the conversation cheerily as ever. "So! What kind of diet do you recommend?"
She stutters to start with, caught off guard by the sudden tone shift. "W-Well, I could give her a few vitamins to make up for key nutrients she may have missed, and…."
(Now I'm sure you don't need to hear diet recommendations from Vestal, so why don't we do a bit of a flashback instead?)
Nightfall was descending on Azur lane, a beautiful full moon shining across the whole of the base.
The Yorktown class of ships were retiring for the night in their dorm, exhausted from the day prior.
Enterprise stepped out of the shower, sitting down on her bed before brushing her hair. "Hornet, do you have any idea why Amagi came to help us?"
"Well she was in the area, so why not?"
"Well, how did she know to help us? We could've handled it fine, and it's not like we asked for help."
Yorktown sits up in bed, answering with, "The higher ups probably thought we could use the help, especially since her appearance helped pin them in. It saved us from any unnecessary damage.".
The silence permeates the room, the air thick all around, with the moon the only source of light.
Hornet's voice cut through the air much like a knife through butter, grabbing their attention with it. "So… what do you guys want to do once this is all over?"
Yorktown mulled it over, putting her hand to her chin, before coming to an answer, "I think I'd like to settle down, maybe start a family."
Enterprise scoffed at the notion, "Like we could have children, we barely know how wisdom cubes work, let alone how to make children with them."
Hornet, ever the opportunist, was quick to respond, "Oh come on sis, let her have her fun. Besides, wouldn't you love~ to settle down and have fun with a man of your own? Maybe let him rock your ship?"
Enterprise blushed out of embarrassment, shoving her head into her pillow with a groan. Yorktown, taking pity on her poor sister, steered the conversation away from sex lives. "Well, regardless of my little sister's ship," Enterprise can be heard groaning in frustration, "I would like to settle down one day, and raise a child of my own. It's not like it has to be mine, maybe just adoption."
"That is a nice dream. I hope you get to see it." She lets out a long yawn, with Enterprise following up with one of her own.
"Wanna go do something together tomorrow, Enterprise? Yorktown?"
Yorktown responds with a yeah mid yawn, and Enterprise just nods her head.
"Well, good night then."
After a chorus of good nights from the other two, they went to bed.
The full moon seemed to hang heavier in response to a young shipgirl's wishes, and little did anyone know, but that next day… would be far from sane.
Enterprise woke up first, going to the bathroom before anyone else awoke.
While Enterprise was taking a shower, she heard a scream from the bedroom. She ran out, still soaked from the water, worried about her sisters.
"What's wrong!?" She looked at Yorktown, her stomach massively larger than it was yesterday, with a purple glow emanating from it.
Yorktown, Enterprise, and Hornet were all looking up at Vestal with concerned looks painted on their faces, as she read through the results once again.
Vestal hesitated before addressing the girls, "It seems that Yorktown is… pregnant. That glow seems to be the wisdom cube of the child."
Hornet and Enterprise both look at Yorktown concerned, waiting for her reaction. "I… I don't understand how this happened… but… I'm glad. If this is my wish being answered, then I'm glad."
Enterprise looks concerned at that reaction, "Are you sure? After all, this is… well, insane!"
Hornet nods, "Yeah! You should be freaking out, trying to figure out what the hell happened to you, not so… calm!"
Yorktown gives them both a small nod, "Yeah, but… it's strange. It's almost like there's a blanket over my mind, like when you finally are back home after a dangerous mission, trusting you are safe again. I don't understand it, but I can't help but trust it."
Hornet and Enterprise look surprised at this revelation, but she's not done. "Besides, what am I going to do about it? Freaking out wouldn't help, at this point I think I should just see how it plays out."
They both stand there stunned, before Hornet gives Yorktown a hug, and Enterprise joins in. After a few moments they break apart, after Vestal gives a little cough to get their attention.
"To be perfectly honest, we have never dealt with anything like this before, so we can't be sure how this will work. For now, we should let this play out and keep monitoring Yorktown every so often. As for what you should focus on, try to eat well, and try not to get into battle for now. We don't want any trauma to the child."
Yorktown nods her head, a small smile gracing her features, with a few tears still on her face.
She looks out the window, the moon still barely out with how early she woke up. She does have one more question though, one that goes unsaid… 'Wasn't the moon full last night?'.
Back to the present; Yorktown has finished thoroughly ringing out Reprisal, who is currently taking her vitamins.
"Sweetie, why don't you go play with some of your friends?"
Reprisal almost looks offended by the comment, "Because they left to go home, due to the tensions." she told her, her voice not showing that frustration she felt, although Yorktown picked up on it regardless.
Yorktown visibly flattened at that, knowing just how much time she spent with the Sakuran ships. Well, a particular two Sakuran ships. "Well… then why not try to make some friends here? I know you didn't spend much time with the eagle union growing up, but you could always start now." Her voice betrayed the lack of confidence in her plan.
Reprisal hesitates for a moment, "...well, I just want to read. Could I do that with any of the other girls?"
Yorktown grows a smile at the response, relieved that her advice was being taken to heart. "Well… why not Hamman?."
"She's too annoying, and I think she might be scared of me."
Yorktown looks a little disheartened at that, "Oh. Well… why not Javelin, she's friendly with everyone!"
Reprisal shakes her head, turning down her suggestion. "She's too loud. If I try to read with her, she'll just interrupt me."
Yorktown nods, before looking out the window to think for a moment, before letting out a small sigh of defeat. "Alright, I have one more suggestion; why not Laffey? She's very calm, and she'll probably be fine with you reading with her."
Reprisal stops to think about it, before nodding. "Makes sense. I'll go look for her, any idea where?"
Vestal joins in, "Why not check out the park? She likes to sleep under the trees."
Reprisal walks out, "Thank you Mom, Vestal."
"Oh, and don't drink with her! It's bad for you!"
"Okay!"
I walk into the Sakura Empire's doctor's office, sitting down to wait to be called up for my blood to be drawn.
A nurse walks up to me, clipboard in hand. She's a normal human, which while unusual, isn't crazy, given my circumstances. "We are ready to see you now. Please follow me."
I follow her to the back office, where they have a machine ready to extract blood. My skin is tougher than a human's, so they need to use a machine to take the blood properly.
I sit in a chair, and the doctor who always draws my blood enters. "Nice to see you again, Re-"
I interrupt him, impatient. "I know already, could we just do this quick please? I wanna go train with Takao."
He shakes his head, setting up the tourniquet on my arm, preparing to draw blood. "Always in a rush, huh? Well, not that I could blame you, I never could sit still at your age either. You should try sitting and reading a book sometime."
I shake my head, "I've heard it before, but it feels better to move in the sun!"
He shakes his head, expecting that answer.
He stabs the needle through my arm, much thicker than a normal syringe. "Your blood is special, you know?"
I roll my eyes, "Yeah yeah, I'm type O."
He shakes his head with a smile on his face. "No, I mean more than that."
He stands up, moving to a laptop to pull something up. "We made some duplicates of your blood, as much as was stable, to run some tests. A patient came in who was going to die without a transfusion, so we gave them the blood as needed, since we had enough."
He turns the screen towards me, showing a person who won a marathon. "Okay and? He won a marathon. Glad he survived and could live out his dream, but what's so special?"
He smiles, pointing towards the subcaption. I read it aloud, "Cripple who had lost use of his legs due to paralysis was able to walk again, and even won a marathon!?"
I honestly hate the doctors. Thankfully I only ever need to go to get a yearly checkup from Vestal. While initially people wanted to do tests with my blood, dissect me and all that, Mom and Vestal didn't let them. They tried just asking for blood, but Vestal said she knew it would only escalate from there, and convinced them to drop it. - Excerpt from Reprisal's Journal
