Sam knew the day was going to be bad after the yelling at PX2-981. Colonel Jack O'Neill had spare no backlash at both her and Daniel. But neither she nor Daniel could have guessed that while they were inside the temple collecting samples and data, several Jaffa had entered the gate. Heading towards them. Teal'c was the one on watch, not them.
Well, apparently they were all on watch according to the Colonel. And if they were still alive it was only because he, the mighty Colonel and the powerful Jaffa had saved the clumsy archaeologist and the stupid blonde scientist. His words exactly.
So the Jaffa had been killed and she and Daniel had been yelled at. A lot. And they had returned to the SGC, all alive. Sam was currently at her lab, writing her mission report and trying her very best not to go General Hammond's office and ask for a reassignment to another SG team. Daniel suddenly popped his head at the doorway of her lab.
"Hi. Busy?", he asked.
Sam stopped typing and looked at him, sighing.
"Just doing my mission report", she said.
"Ah…about that…", he said entering her lab.
Sam crossed her arms and looked at him.
"What Daniel?", she asked lifting an eyebrow.
He scratched his head.
"Jack spoke with me. He told me to leave the 'yelling part' out of the report. And who was supposed to keep watch and stuff… Just put the temple collection data and the Jaffa encounter, fighting and getting back home", he said readjusting his glasses.
"Really? The Colonel said that?", she asked surprised that she was asked to be make a false report about their mission.
Daniel sat on the stool in front of her desk.
"Well, he thinks it will look bad for us not being on alert and being distracted with the temple things", he said not very convincible.
Sam opened her mouth in utter shock.
"He said what?!", she asked with her blue eyes opened wide.
Daniel just shrugged his shoulders.
"And you're doing what he said to you?", Sam asked carefully.
"I wanted to talk to you before", Daniel confessed.
Sam took a deep breath.
"I see", she said looking at what she had already written.
"So what do you think we should do?", Daniel asked, leaning on her desk.
Sam thought for just a second. It wasn't a difficult decision.
"If he told you that, clearly he wanted you to pass the message to me. So I have no choice but to do what he says. He's my CO. I have to follow orders, Daniel. Even if I clearly don't agree with them. Like in this case. We were assigned to do research at the temple. By him. Teal'c was on watch as well as the Colonel. He shouldn't have yelled at us. But again, like I said he's the mission leader. I'm just a Captain. And he doesn't like me very much already. You're a civilian. You have more room if you want to disobey but honestly…". Sam looked at her boots.
"Yeah, I know. He would kick me out of the team", Daniel finished for her.
"Most probably", she said.
Daniel put both his hands in her desk.
"So I guess we're just going to left some parts of our mission out from the official report", he said getting up.
Sam was already deleting some sentences.
"Guess so", she confirmed through her teeth.
"Right, nice talk", he said waving and leaving her alone.
Sam continued typing until she finished it. After printing it, she put it in a folder and left her lab. Since the Colonel never wanted to read the missions reports she always delivered them straight to General Hammond. When she was approaching the General's office, Colonel O'Neill was coming in the opposite direction. She silently cursed.
"Is that the mission report, Carter?", he asked looking at the folder in her hand.
"Yes, Sir", she said stopping in front of him.
"Let me see", he asked extending his hand.
Sam handed him the folder. Jack opened it and quickly read it while Sam keep looking at an invisible spot in the wall right above his left shoulder. He closed the file and returned it to her.
"Carry on", he said, continuing his walk.
She felt her face blush and headed to the General's office. He wasn't in so she just left it in the pile of 'in' he had in his desk. She closed the door and decided to eat something. In the elevator doors, she found the Colonel also waiting. She bit her lip.
"Sir", she said. Putting her hands behind her back.
Jack had his hands in his pockets. "Carter", he simply returned. Not even looking at her.
The doors opened and he let her get inside first. She pressed the mess button and he just leaned against one of the walls. So apparently they were heading for the same place. The trip was made in total silence. When they left, Sam was almost turning back and inventing an excuse to go back to her lab when Daniel appeared in the corridor.
"Oh…Are you also going to the mess?", he asked.
"Appears so, Daniel", Jack said with a smile.
"Great, we can have lunch together", he said also smiling.
Sam sighed and Jack looked at her.
"Any problem, Carter?".
"No, Sir", she said entering the mess.
Teal'c was already there, seated at their usual table. She took a tray and looked at the today's menu. She suddenly had lost all her appetite. So she just picked a blue Jell-O, a sandwich and a bottle of water. She paid and joined Teal'c.
"Captain Carter", Teal'c bowed his head as she sat in front of him.
"Hi Teal'c", she said putting her tray on the table.
Seconds later, Jack sat next to her and Daniel next to Teal'c. The table become suddenly silent. Sam and Daniel exchanged glances that were caught by Jack. He furrowed his brow but continued to eat his meat loaf.
"So Teal'c, how's your lunch? Sure you have enough food?", he asked looking at the big Jaffa.
Teal'c lifted his eyebrow. He had a plate full of meat loaf, another of mash potato and another of green beans. Additionally, he had also some macaroni on the side.
"I believe I have enough substance for this meal, O'Neill", he said gravely.
Sam tried not to laugh so she started drinking her water.
"Are you sure?", Jack asked still eating.
"I am", Teal'c answered filling his mouth with mash potato.
Jack just nodded. The rest of the meal was going quietly when suddenly Jack decided to change his attention to Sam.
"So Carter…How are the results from that soil samples you took from that wonderful temple we went?", he asked.
Sam had just finished her Jell-O and was preparing to leave when he asked her that question.
"They're still in analysis, Sir. No results yet", she said with both hands on the table.
"You're usually faster, Captain… Are you dragging your feet?", he asked starting to cut a slice of his cake.
Sam blushed.
"No, Sir", she managed to say.
"So when am I expected to get results? We almost died because of that crap after all…", he said.
Daniel looked at Sam and slowly shook his head like telling 'it was not worth it'. Sam bit her lip and counted to ten before answering.
"You'll get the results as soon as the lab machines produce them, Sir", she said still looking at Daniel.
Jack watched the glances that both of them were exchanging and started to get pissed for some reason he couldn't explain. The same feeling he had in the planet.
"And you Daniel? What's your excuse? Spending too much time in Carter's lab?", he asked with an icy tone.
Daniel looked at him surprised.
"Me?! I'm doing the translations, Jack. It takes time. You know that", he said with a confused expression.
"And you need to be in Carter's lab to do your translations?! You don't like your lab anymore?!", Jack asked putting his plate aside.
Sam and Daniel looked again at each other. And Jack got angrier.
"WHAT?! Do you have something you want to share with me and Teal'c?!", he asked looking to both of them.
Sam blushed again and Daniel looked at his plate.
"I'm going to say this only once. Whatever is going on between the two of you, keep it off base and off working hours. You…" – Jack pointed to Daniel who was now looking at him open mouthed. "You are a civilian but are under contract with us so you still have to comply with our rules. And you…" – Jack looked at Sam who was greeting her teeth and looking at him with murderous eyes. "You're a Captain in the USAF. So I expect you to conduct yourself with the respect that your rank and uniform requires of you, Captain".
Sam got up and very tensely, salute him with a "Yes, Sir". Then she left the mess hall without looking back. Daniel left after her without even bothering to say anything to Jack.
Fuming, Jack crossed his arms while Teal'c silently finished his lunch.
Daniel and Sam caught the same elevator. She punched her lab level.
"What the hell is going on with him, Daniel? Has he just implied that we…", Sam was pacing in the elevator that luckily had just the two of them.
Daniel put a finger in his glasses, pushing them up.
"I don't know, Sam. He's acting strange. He appears convinced that we're in some kind of relationship", he said shrugging his shoulders.
Sam stopped pacing.
"Why? Did you said anything to him?", she asked.
"No. I have no clue where he got that idea", Daniel admitted. "I mean…It's none of his business if we decide to have some kind of relationship, right? But he knows damn well that I love my wife so I don't get it", Daniel said with a defeated tone.
Sam put a hand on his shoulder.
"We know you love your wife, Daniel", she said in a comforting tone.
"He's just being so stupid", Daniel said.
Sam let her head fall against the elevator's wall.
"Yeah…".
"I think it's best if we just ignore his comments and move on", Daniel said as they step out of the elevator.
"Probably", Sam said while they moved along the corridor and headed to her lab.
