S2 E5 AU The Bone Yard
AU stories for NCIS episodes. Each is independent from all the others since this is based on the possibility of parallel universes and multiple timelines…. many, many of them. Later on some may seem to follow something that happened in an earlier AU episode story but it's probably coincidence unless I say otherwise in the beginning. Again, these are AU scenes/stories which means a character may die in one story and be alive in the next one. Or it might be a missing scene.
This is a short alternate universe story/scene for season 2, episode 5 The Bone Yard
The original episode aired on October 26, 2004.
The dialogue in some of this is from the episode.

And finally, all mistakes are mine.
"They found two kilos of coke and $50 grand in counterfeit bills in my freezer," FBI Special Agent Tobias Fornell despondently told Gibbs. "I thought the coke in ice cream quarts was a nice touch."
"It was an expensive one," Gibbs replied. "Jimmy Naps is going to a lot of trouble
to frame you, Tobias. Why now?"
"A few reasons but uh," he hesitated and moved closer to the bars of the cell. Gibbs didn't move from where he was leaning with his arms through the vertical bars and his forearms resting on the horizontal bar. "More than a couple I guess," he said in normal volume and then whispered, "Check Emily's toy dog." Then he spoke louder for anyone listening, "The reasons don't really matter."
"Sure they do, Tobias. Sure they do."
The two men exchanged a look confirming that Gibbs got Fornell's message.
"Next time bring better coffee."
Gibbs smiled at his friend. "I will. Don't go anywhere," he joked and walked down the corridor and out of the detention facility.
Fornell's place had been searched and was probably under surveillance so Gibbs did a little surveillance of his own. It was late in the evening and clouds kept the moon from providing any light which was good for him. Dressed in black with a black skull cap and camouflaged face, he climbed, crawled and scurried through ten yards to get to where he needed to be. He found the hidden key and waited. And listened. And watched.
The neighborhood was dead quiet. Not even a dog barking owl hooting. He hadn't seen any suspicious vehicles in six blocks in every direction so maybe Fornell's place wasn't under surveillance. Thinking you have an airtight case leads you to target fixation. They had Fornell in a cage with a ton of evidence against him so they assumed there was no need to look for anyone else or anything else.
Gibbs waited 10 minutes before using the key. He slipped in, closed the door and waited. No movement and no sounds. His eyes had adjusted to the darkness and he stepped to the opening between the kitchen and living room. The dog's plastic eyes seemed to be looking at him from where it was sitting on the sofa. There weren't any nanny cams when Kelly was little he thought and placed the sstuffed animal inside his t-shirt. He went out the way he'd gone in and then climbed, crawled and scurried back to his truck.
Gibbs showed Director Tom Morrow what he'd found and Morrow contacted his counterpart at the FBI. They had a plan to clear Fornell, get agent Charles and put Little Ricky in prison. It started with Fornell committing suicide and ended with the mafia losing their inside man. They suspected Charles would be killed and they should have stopped it, but in most ways it was better for him to die than to have the bad publicity that went along with the trial of an FBI agent who had been in bed with the mob.
Seeing the looks on the faces of Tony, Kate and Tim when they saw Fornell alive was an added bonus as the resurrected FBI agent stood at the edge of the squad room. Oh yeah, it was already a good day and he looked forward to time in the gym. He'd take Kate aside and remind her to not kick or punch McGee in the balls anymore. It's okay for her to do that to bad guys but not to her teammate. Now he needed a plan to find out if Tony was holding back when they fought. Hm, maybe train with another team so he could observe Tony's improvement from a distance. Yeah, a good day was going to become a great day.
