S2 E14 AU Witness

AU stories for NCIS episodes. Each is independent from all the others since this is based on the possibility of parallel universes and multiple timelines…. many, many of them. Later on some may seem to follow something that happened in an earlier AU episode story but it's probably coincidence unless I say otherwise in the beginning. Again, these are AU scenes/stories which means a character may die in one story and be alive in the next one. Or it might be a missing scene.

This is a short alternate universe story/scene for season 2, episode 14 Witness

The original episode aired on February 15, 2005.
The dialogue in some of this is from the episode.

Gibbs asked McGee, "Who's watching Thorne's apartment?"

"Special Agent Balboa. I'm on my way to relieve him."

Tim McGee and Erin Kendall were talking on the phone. She was in her apartment and he was in an apartment across the street keeping tabs on Thorne's place.

"How did you end up a federal agent?"

He chuckled, "It was by design. I always wanted to be in law enforcement."

"I never thought I'd be talking like this with someone who carries a gun."

In the next minute Erin had heard something, gone and checked and declared that someone was trying to break into her apartment.

"I'll be right there," he told her. "Don't hang up." He was out the door of the apartment when he told her, "Go in the bathroom and lock the door."

She cried, "What good will that do?" Not knowing what else to do to she followed his instructions and moved quickly toward the bathroom.

Tim was running when he said, "It'll give him another door he has to get through."

He was inside her building when he heard slight banging. "What's happening?"

"He's trying to get in the bathroom." She sobbed, "Oh please."

McGee was outside her apartment with his gun drawn. "Erin?"

He barely heard "I'm here" on the cell phone.

"Yell at him. Tell him the police are coming."

The banging stopped and McGee waited. It was just a few seconds later when a man came rushing out and pulled the door closed behind him. McGee pointed his weapon at the man's back and yelled, "Stop. NCIS."

Startled, the man turned to confront McGee and saw the gun. Tim saw the building manager pale a little and told him, "Do not move or I'll shoot you."

Keeping enough distance between himself and the suspect, Tim ordered him face down on the floor with his arms and legs spread. He heard a sound from inside the apartment and shouted, "Don't come out, Erin. Make sure the apartment door is locked and go back to the bathroom. Lock that door and call 9-1-1." Tim waited until she told him she was safely back in the bathroom before he hung up and called Gibbs.

Local cops arrived first and Gibbs was there a minute later. Erin hadn't wanted to come out until Tim told her it was safe and when she did she hugged Tim for saving her.

"Why did he go after her, boss? She couldn't identify him."

"Detective Floyd screwed up by telling him that the young woman across the street witnessed a murder in Thorne's apartment. His mistake almost cost her life."
