Peter just groaned into Ned's pillow "This is the worst day of my life."
"Oh, come on I think after a couple of days Mr. Stark will have cooled down," Ned said as consolation.
Peter just turns to Ned "You didn't see how red his face got; he could've turned into a red hulk with how mad he was. I shouldn't have gotten over eager."
"Oh, come on Parker, you said so yourself nobody got hurt and nothing got destroyed. Sounds like he overacted, big time" MJ said as she flipped through a page of her book.
"Enough that he canceled the rest of lab weekend, and possibly even next weekend if he holds a grudge."
MJ just raises her eyebrows "Well maybe some space between the two of you will be good until he can calm his hormones."
Ned nodded eagerly in agreement, he thought of all the things they talked about doing but didn't have time to because of how busy he was at the tower on the weekends.
"Yeah, I got a ton of new Legos we can build, and then there's that new Matrix movie that will be coming out in a couple of weeks."
Peter smiled softly "That does sound nice, I guess maybe not going over there for a bit will be good for both of us."
Mr., Stark did say almost every time they saw each other in person, Peter would either give him a heart attack or be the death of him, and he really didn't want either to happen because of him."
"Good cause I know what the three of us are going to do in a few weeks," MJ said closing her book and opening up her backpack. She quickly pulls out a flyer, and hands it to the boys,
Both Peter and Ned looked at it dumbfounded.
"A Lip Sync Battle?"
"Yeah, it's an annual event where anyone 16 and up is paired up against another person trying to one-up each other in a lip sync battle, lot of dancing and dressing up in drag. It's quite hilarious."
Peter could see the embarrassment on MJ's face, and he found it quite cute.
"Sounds like you've wanted to enter before."
MJ just glares at Peter "Shut it, Parker. What you guys say, Peter Vs Me and Ned can face off against whoever."
"Hey why do I get to be the one to compete against a stranger," Ned said, not really minding in the slightest but still not the point.
MJ ignores him "So you guys in or what, because I expect you guys to go all out."
"I'm totally in," Peter said his mind already made up, thinking this would be a great distraction and a way to show off some of his dance moves.
Ned was already picturing the song he would dance to "Me too, this sounds like so much fun."
"All right losers, sometime this week we'll go sign up so make sure you bring your IDS."
After leaving Ned's, Peter decided to walk back home, despite MJ's offer of a ride home. He figured the walk home would keep his mind off Mr. Stark and help him think of what song he wanted to do for the lip sync battle. There were so many he wanted to do, how on earth was he supposed to choose just one?
Suddenly his super hearing started to pick up.
All right, let's practice the moves one more time
Peter turned around and from across the street at the park he saw an acrobatics class taking place. He couldn't help but just watch in admiration, the way they could flex their bodies in so many different positions. Long before the spider bite, he took dance lessons from Ned's mother, but once his asthma and allergies got worse, he was forced to quit. Now he could easily do what they were doing with so much ease without having to even think twice about it.
Something wet hit Peter's nose, causing him to look up to see there was a light drizzle. The clouds were getting darker earlier than what he was expecting, soon it would be nothing but a downpour. He probably should've brought his umbrella with him today.
Peter's eyes shone, as a lightbulb in his head went off.
Umbrella.
He then looks over to the group, and suddenly he got an idea.
(2 and a half weeks later)
Peter and Ned both tiredly walked out of a Dance Studio, Peter looking more so than Ned. The two started making their way to the train station
Ned just lets out some air "How is your routine going."
Though they agreed to let their performance be a surprise to one another, they have mentioned in past comments about their routines, and from what Peter has mentioned it sounded complex compared to his simpler dance moves if they can be called that. Ned knew he couldn't pull off what Peter was capable of.
"I'm all ready for Friday, just one move I'm a little uncertain about," Peter said, still unsure how to do his finishing move.
"I'm good as well, Friday is going to be amazing. I can't wait to see what MJ is going to come up with, she seems very confident, she's going to beat you."
Peter just smiled "I don't doubt it, she said she didn't even need the use of the dance studio your mom got us into."
Thanks to Mrs. Leeds being a former dance instructor, she got connections in several of the studios in the city and got them both in for a reasonable price, which she was paying for which including any backup dancers. Her only condition was that she and Mr. Leeds be allowed to attend and film the Lip Sync Battle.
"Is May going?"
The two made their way into the train.
"No actually, she'll be working a late evening shift on Friday, and then a morning shift on Saturday. But she already talked to your mom who promised to videotape everything for her, because I told her what my performance would be"
Peter raised his eyebrows as he smiled remembering how hard May was laughing when he told her the song he was going to perform and showed her the outfit. She really wanted to call off work just to be able to be there, but since she was so close to catching up on the bills, both of them came to an agreement that it would be recorded for her later.
Ned then got a bit closer and whisper "Are you going back to the tower, after the event."
Usually during their spring break, Peter would spend more days over there, but because the Lip Sync Battle fell during their break, he was more preoccupied with rehearsals.
"I think I'll give it another week; you know kind of like a new start for the new month."
Ned and MJ were pretty good about not bringing up Mr. Stark, maybe only once or twice in the passing otherwise they have just been getting ready for the event or otherwise doing semi-regular teen stuff. Besides Karen making suggestions he should call and report to Mr. Stark when he went out patrolling or Happy showing up 2 days after the incident to offer him rides home, which he declined for the time being since he was preoccupied, he hasn't heard a peep from Mr. Stark. Peter can only think he was still upset with him
Suddenly the train came to its first stop, which unfortunately was Ned's stop.
"I guess I'll see you then on Friday, I'll call you tonight the organizers of the event are supposed to email us the schedule for the night including whose competing with whom, since there were quite a few people who didn't have a partner to compete against."
Peter couldn't help but laugh "You seem more excited about the prospect now."
"Oh yeah, I mean my odds are pretty good that whoever I'm paired with I won't know and won't make a total embarrassment out of myself besides you, MJ, and my parents."
"All right I'll see you Friday."
And with that Peter was alone, for another 20 minutes until the next stop.
Peter was happy to finally get off the train and make his way towards home. He planned on taking a nap and getting ready for patrol. He grabbed his keys and quickly opened up the door.
"Hey May," Peter said but found his voice faltering and his face turning in shock, when he saw the one and only Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America, sitting on his couch.
Steve smiled at him "Hey Peter how's it going."
"U-Um Mr. Rogers, w-what are you doing here, where's Aunt May?" Peter asked crossing his arms, as he could barely get the words out, wondering why Captain America would be visiting his home. Usually, the Avengers were left to the more worldwide threats, while for the time being he stuck to the neighborhood crimes.
"She left early for her shift; I was hoping we could have a chat if you don't mind. I promise it won't be long."
Peter gulped already figuring out what he wanted to talk about
"Sure," Pete said patting his legs as he took a seat next to Steve.
To say it was awkward was a complete understatement, usually, he's always ecstatic to be in the presence of Mr. Rogers and the other Avengers, but considering the situation he couldn't help but be nervous and wonder why he was here.
"We've missed you at the tower the past couple of weeks, Tony's missed you," he said making sure to emphasize the last part.
Peter just sighed "I would be lying If I said I didn't miss being at the tower either, but you know I figured give Mr. Stark some space for a bite."
"Listen what happened last time was a complete accident and misunderstanding, Tony completely overreacted and he knows it," Steve said exactly knowing how Tony can go overboard over the simplest things.
Steve felt bad seeing the disbelief on Peter's face because whatever bad mood Tony was in that day, he, unfortunately, took it out on poor Peter.
"I know my words may not mean much right now, but Tony really does feel bad about what happened since you left the tower. Since you haven't been coming to the tower or having Happy pick you up, he barely leaves the lab, and when he shows his face, he tries to put on a façade but we all know that he misses you."
Peter looks to Steve with a bothered look "Then why doesn't he call or show up here himself."
"Stark Pride. It's his worst trait if you ask me, doesn't want to be the one to have to reach out first even when he knows when he's in the wrong, thinking that things will just naturally go back to normal after a few days."
Peter didn't respond, because he felt in a way, he was similar to Mr. Stark in that respect. He hated personal conflicts and wanted to avoid them in any way that he can, but it probably did more harm than good.
"I get it, and like I said I just wanted to give Mr. Stark some space because I know how overeager I can be. I was already planning on coming back at the beginning of next month, you know new month new start."
Steve smiled as he put his hand on Peter's shoulder "That's what I wanted to hear; I'll be holding you to that."
Both of them got up off the couch as Steve prepared to leave, but suddenly he turned back around with a sly smile.
"See you on Friday, at the lip sync battle."
"Yeah, see you- "Peter started until he processed what Steve had just said.
Peter just looked at him dumbfounded "How on earth- "
"Your Aunt was actually telling me what you have been up to the past couple of weeks, and believe it or not Sam is competing in it, so I'll be in the audience watching."
Peter's eyes widened imagining not just one but two Avengers going to be there to witness his performance, then he started thinking what if all of them will be there?
"It's just going to be me there, and possibly Bucky if I can convince him as well but no one else. When Sam brought up the fact he was competing, everyone else didn't seem interested in going. Tony quote one quote said, Lip sync battles are just a way for amateur singers to be able to get away with copyright for the stage."
This oddly made Peter feel better, he would prefer none of the Avengers be there to watch his embarrassing performance live, but if it had to be anyone, he supposes Steve, Bucky, and Sam were the best options.
"That's good, um you're not going to tell Mr. Stark or the others about it will you."
Steve raises an eyebrow "Do you not want me to."
Peter just shakes his head "I'd not prefer they know at least until after it's all said and done. It's just really embarrassing."
"Then you have my word, I won't tell any of the other Avengers.
Peter lets out a sigh of relief "Thanks, Mr. Rogers."
Once Steve was gone, Peter did exactly what he planned on doing, he took about an hour's nap before he went out patrolling for the night. It was pretty busy, he ended up stopping quite a few burglars on the street, and house invaders, so by the time he got home he decided to head to bed earlier than he planned.
As he was getting ready for bed, his phone started going off, and saw that Ned was calling. As soon as he picked up, Peter did not get the chance to even speak.
"Dude, did you see who I'm battling against"
Ned was freaking out, not believing who he was lip-syncing against.
Peter's eyebrows furrow together as he opens up his laptop "No, I didn't even check my email today."
"I don't even know how I'm supposed to compete against him"
Peter quickly found the email from the organizers of the event, and quickly scrolled through the list of the competitors. As soon as he found Ned's name, Peter snort a laugh finding it a little ironic.
Sam Wilson Vs. Ned Leeds.
Author's Note
This is part 1 of the story and just a bit of a backstory leading up to the Lip Sync Battle. Part 2 should be up sometime tomorrow or the day after. I almost forgot Anthony Mackie was in Lip Sync Battle, so I thought it would be cool to have Sam participate in it as well especially going against Ned. Thanks for all the support for this short story.
