A black tom awoke in the night to a strange sound. Looking around the dimly lit den, he stood up and exited his nest, careful not to wake the other sleeping cats around him. He slowly made his way out into the clearing to see a dark grey she-cat standing watch over the camp. Padding up to her, he rumbled "Ashfall, how are you?" The she-cat dipped her head and mewed, "Hello Blackheart. Trouble sleeping?" The tom nodded.

"Yes. I've been having issues sleeping the past few night." Blackheart turned towards to bramble entrance. "I figured I'd make myself useful to the Clan since I'm awake. Hunting might tire me out enough to sleep."

"I'll join you." A voice mewed from behind. Turning around, Blackheart saw his littermate, Frostfall. "Hunting sounds fun." Blackheart flicked his tail. "Just try to keep up," he said teasingly. Frostfall purred in amusement. "Says you, you big oaf."

Blackheart turned and whisked through the bramble screen, bounding out into the forest. The New Leaf breeze felt great on his fur as he made his way through the undergrowth. Reaching a clearing, he slowed down and tasted the air. His brother padded up beside him and did the same. "Do you smell that?" Frostfall mewed, his fur bristling. Blackheart nodded. It was another cat.

"You don't think FlameClan would venture this far into our territory, would they?" Frostfall meowed pensively. Blackheart tasted the air again. "No, it's not another Clan's scent," he mewed. "It's a rogue or a loner." The large black tom crouched down and slinked through the brush silently, moving towards the scent of the other cat. Sliding his claws out, he made his way to a bramble bush where the scent was the strongest.

He readied to pounce, but suddenly froze as he heard a noise. It was a tiny mew. "Frostfall, come quickly!" he meowed. Frostfall bounded up to Blackheart. Together, they pushed through the bramble to see a tiny kit. Small, black with fluffy white ears.

"What is a kit doing out here?" Frostfall meowed. Blackheart shook his head. "I don't know, but we can't leave it here." The tom picked the kit up in his mouth. "It's almost dawn. We should take him back to the camp." Frostfall nodded and followed his brother out of the bramble.

The two toms pushed their way into the camp. Jaystar was standing outside of his den. Seeing the brothers, he bounded down the rocks to greet them. "You found a kit?" He mewed. "Is it injured?" Blackheart set the kit down gently and shook his head. "No, it's not injured. It's not even a few days old. Nor is it from another Clan." Jaystar sniffed the kit. It mewled and nuzzled against his nose.

"A loner must have dumped her kit in the forest." Jaystar meowed. "Poor thing. To be abandoned like this." Jaystar looked up at Blackheart and Frostfall. "We should take him to the queens and get him fed and rested."

"Snowleaf will surely take him." Frostfall mewed, flicking his brother with his tail. Blackheart nodded. "I'll take him to her." He picked up the kit and slowly padded towards the queens' den. Pushing through the entrance, he mewed softly, "Snowleaf, are you awake?" The white queen lifted her head and blinked. "Blackheart?" She meowed. "Is that a kit?"

The black tom padded forward and set the kit down at his paws. "Frostfall and I found him this morning while hunting." He meowed. "He's only a few days old. He needs a mother. We thought you'd be willing to take him." Snowleaf looked down at the kit and purred. "Of course. I could never deny a kit."

Blackheart nudged the kit into the nest and he immediately nuzzled up to the queen's belly, beginning to feed. "How are you feeling?" He looked up at his mate. Snowleaf touched her nose to his. "I'm well, my love." The she-cat looked back down at the kit. "What should we name him?" Blackheart peered into the best at the little tom. "What about Nightkit?" His fur is as black as the night sky."

Snowleaf purred. "That's a wonderful name." She nuzzled the kit gently. "Hello, Nightkit. Welcome to ShadeClan."
