Ruby can't help it—she's so relieved when Penny finally relaxes, seeming to have control of herself once more, that she leans over and kisses her friend right on the lips. In front of everyone in the courtyard in the Schnee manor.
Oops.
She immediately flushes red as she pulls away, stammering. "I—I'm sorry, I should have asked first." Ruby clears her throat, attempting to calm down enough to explain herself properly. "I was just—I'm just so glad that you're okay. I was so scared."
"There's no need to apologize," Penny replies, her voice soft. "It's what I wanted, too. I love you, Ruby."
Ruby does her best to tune out the murmurs of their friends, Nora whooping with glee—and instead tries to focus on the magnitude of what Penny just said. "Really?" she breathes, her voice barely above a whisper. Penny nods, squeezing Ruby's hand. She feels a goofy smile spreading across her face. "I love you too."
