Locations

The Citadel is a complex of buildings in Oldtown that serves as the central home to the order of the maesters. At the Citadel, the residing archmaesters teach and train new students, and convene in the Conclave. The Citadel lies on the Honeywine, where its towers and domes are connected with arching stone bridges. Houses and stalls sit on the bridges. It lies upriver compared to the Starry Sept and Battle Island. The gates are flanked by a pair of tall green sphinxes with the bodies of lions, the wings of eagles and the tails of serpents. One has the face of a man, the other a woman. It is considered to be the greatest seat of knowledge in the known world.
Students who start their education at the Citadel are known as novices. Once they have earned a link for their chain, they become acolytes.
Just inside the gates of the Citadel lies the Scribe's Hearth. Here, the citizens of Oldtown come to hire scribes, usually acolytes, to write and read letters for them. The scribes wait in open stalls as is their custom. Other stalls situated at the Scribe's Hearth include those where books are bought and sold. Others offer maps.
Outside the Seneschal's Court lies the stocks where acolytes and novices are punished for minor crimes, such as petty thievery. Inside the doors is a hall with a stone floor and high, arched windows. At the far end of the hall there is a raised dais where a gatekeeper greets all those who wish to make an appointment to see the Seneschal. Behind the dais is a turnpike stair.
The Isle of Ravens is linked to the eastern bank of the Honeywine by a weathered wooden drawbridge. On the island is located the Ravenry, the oldest building of the Citadel.
The walls of the Ravenry are covered in moss and vines and within its yard sits a weirwood tree on which the ravens like to perch. The white raven rookery is located in the west tower.
The Library of the Citadel is known to be a great repository of knowledge. The Citadel has a copy of Lives of Four Kings and a partial collection of The Fires of the Freehold. A locked vault beneath the Citadel is said to contain the sole remaining copy of Blood and Fire. The Citadel also has an account of Redwyn's journey to Lorn Point and the Frozen Shore, as well as a fragment of Unnatural History. Some of the oldest documents in the Citadel's archives are ancient ballads regaling Kings of Winter.
The Quill and Tankard is an old inn located on an island in the Honeywine. It is a tall, timbered building that leans toward the south and has a common room and a torchlit terrace. There is an apple tree by the river. The island connects to the rest of the city with an old plank bridge. The inn is renowned for its fearsomely strong cider. Novices from the Citadel go there to drink. Some serving wenches also entertain men. Emma is the oldest of the inn's wenches, who also include her daughter, Rosey.

Oldtown is a city located on Whispering Sound on the southwestern coast of the Reach. It was constructed around the Hightower, the seat of House Hightower on Battle Isle. The Citadel, home to maesters and their Conclave, is located in Oldtown, and the city also contains the Starry Sept, formerly the seat of the High Septon of the Faith of the Seven.
Built by the First Men before the coming of the Andals, Oldtown is the largest and richest city in the Seven Kingdoms, although the capital, King's Landing, is now more populous. Trading ships from all the world, including the rest of Westeros, the nine Free Cities, the Summer Isles, and more, are known to call upon Oldtown's port. Traders from the city often visit Qarth.
Oldtown is built in stone, with all its streets cobbled, which can make them wet and slippery on a damp day. Most bridges are made of stone, although some wooden bridges can be found as well. The city itself is surrounded by massive, thick, high stone walls.
Oldtown is a labyrinth of wynds, crisscrossing alleys, narrow crookback streets, and markets. These include the Thieves Market and Ragpicker's Wynd.
The mighty Hightower is a massive stepped lighthouse located on Battle Isle, where the Honeywine widens into Whispering Sound. The Hightower has a great beacon on top, which shows ships the way to port.

Highgarden is a castle which serves as the seat of House Tyrell, the regional capital of the Reach, and the heart of chivalry in the Seven Kingdoms. It lies on the Mander where the ocean road meets the roseroad, making it an important crossroads.
Highgarden is located on a broad verdant hill overlooking the Mander. The castle is surrounded by three rings of white stone whose crenellated curtain walls increase in height. Between the outer and middle walls is a famous briar labyrinth which serves to entertain as well as slow invaders. The oldest towers, squat and square, date from the Age of Heroes. Newer towers are tall and slender, round fortifications dating from after the coming of the Andals.
The castle sept, which has rows of stained-glass windows honoring Garth Greenhand and the Seven, is matched only by the Great Sept of Baelor and the Starry Sept. The castle's godswood contains three weirwoods known as the Three Singers. The palatial keep is decorated with statues and colonnades. Also within Highgarden's walls are groves, fountains, and courtyards. The castle's structures are covered in ivy, grapes, and climbing roses.
Highgarden is filled with flowers, singers, pipers, fiddlers and harpers. The stables have a fine selection of horseflesh, and there are pleasure boats to sail along the Mander. There are fields of golden roses that stretch as far as the eye can see. Fruits grown nearby include melons, peaches, and fireplums.

Bitterbridge, formerly known as Stonebridge, is the seat of House Caswell in the Reach.
Bitterbridge is situated where the river Mander meets the Roseroad. It takes its name from an ancient stone bridge that crosses the Mander. The castle is small, made of stone and timber. The keep is not that tall, but the land is low and flat and makes it seem taller.

Harrenhal, the largest castle in the Seven Kingdoms, is on the north shore of the Gods Eye. Harrenhal's holdings are some of the richest in Westeros, claiming vast tracts of green fertile land. Harrenhal is immensely strong. The castle has five towers of dizzying size, with equally monstrous curtain walls. The walls are incredibly thick and its rooms are built on a scale that would be more comfortable for giants than humans.
Harrenhal is built on a gigantic scale; its colossal curtain walls are sheer and high as mountain cliffs while atop the battlements the wood-and-iron scorpions seem as small as their namesakes when seen from the ground. Harrenhal's gatehouse is as large as Winterfell's Great Keep, and its stone is discolored and fissured. From outside the gatehouse, only the tops of five immense towers can be seen because the height of the walls obscure the view of them. Harrenhal's walls and towers are made of black stone.
The Tower of Dread is one of Harrenhal's five melted towers. It is near the middle bailey and the mews.
The Widow's Tower is one of the five melted towers of Harrenhal. A stone bridge connects the Widow's Tower to Kingspyre Tower. A winding stair leads to a dungeon below the Widow's Tower, a long stone vault without windows.
The Wailing Tower is one of the five melted towers of Harrenhal. The ground floor of the tower contains storerooms and granaries, and the next two floors can house part of the garrison. The upper stories have not been occupied for eighty years, however, and the topmost story has huge bats. Beneath the Wailing Tower are cavernous vaults. Wind blowing from the north through cracks in the stone creates a wailing sound.
The Tower of Ghosts is the most ruined of Harrenhal's five melted towers. In front of it lies a ruined sept, and close to the tower is a postern gate in the east wall.
Kingspyre Tower is the largest and tallest of the five melted towers of Harrenhal. The tower is lopsided beneath the weight of slagged stone, the result of dragonfire. There is an arching stone bridge that connects it to the Widow's Tower. The castellan's chambers are within this tower, and are as spacious as any lords. The lord's bedchamber contains a hearth and a featherbad. Half a flight of stairs below is the solar, a spare, drafty room that is as large as a hall in a smaller castle. The solar contains a huge oaken table.
The Hall of a Hundred Hearths is the largest hall at Harrenhal. The Hall of a Hundred Hearths is a cavernous and drafty room at Harrenhal, larger than even the throne room of the Red Keep. Huge hearths are arranged along the walls every ten feet or so. Despite its name, it only contains thirty-some hearths. The hall has a smooth slate floor and two galleries.
The kitchens are located in a round stone building with a domed roof containing nothing but kitchens.
The Barracks Hall above the armory is where the men-at-arms take their meals.
Adjoining the armory is the smithy, a long building in the shape of a tunnel. It has twenty forges, stone water troughs, and a high roof.
The long stables have slate roofs.
The godswood of Harrenhal is walled over twenty acres and has a small stream running through it. The wood contains oaks, pines, and sentinels. Its heart tree, a weirwood, appears to have a terrible visage full of hatred, with a twisted mouth and flaring eyes. The heart tree has thirteen deep marks carved into it dating to the Battle Above the Gods Eye in 130 AC during the Dance of the Dragons. These marks still bleed every spring.
Flowstone Yard is where men-at-arms exercise and drill and squires clean arms and armor. It has a lumpy surface and is located near the Wailing Tower. There is a covered gallery above the yard with arches looking towards it.
The bear pit is ten yards across and five yards across, walled in stone, floored with sand, and encircled by six tiers of marble benches. It is located in the middle ward.
The bathhouse is a low-ceilinged room filled with great stone tubs large enough to hold six or seven after the fashion of the Free Cities. The bathhouse is made of stone and timber, with only one entrance to the room.
Harrenhal is said to be cursed, as many Houses and individuals who have held the castle have eventually come to bad ends.

The Red Keep is a castle on Aegon's Hill in King's Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms.
The Red Keep is made of pale red stone and overlooks the mouth of the Blackwater Rush. The Red Keep has seven massive drum-towers crowned with iron ramparts. The castle is patrolled by gold cloaks. Much of the Red Keep is connected underground.
Massive curtain walls surround the castle, with nests and crenelations for archers. Thick stone parapets, some four feet high, protect the outer edge of the wall ramparts, where the heads of traitors are traditionally placed on iron spikes between the crenels at the gatehouse. The walls have great bronze gates and portcullises, with narrow postern doors nearby. The castle also has great cornerforts. The immense barbican has a cobbled square in front of it. Behind the walls are small inner yards, vaulted halls, covered bridges, barracks of the City Watch of King's Landing, dungeons, granaries, kennels, and stables.
The Red Keep has serpentine steps which can be strenuous to climb. Maegor's Holdfast, the small council chambers, the Tower of the Hand, the lower bailey, a small sunken courtyard, and the black cells are located below the steps. The Great Hall with the throne room is found above the steps, and the outer yard or ward is found near the main gate. The Great Yard can be seen from the windows of the Tower of the Hand. Also above the steps are the godswood, the river walk, the small kitchen, and the pig yard. The royal sept and the Maidenvault are located above the serpentine steps as well.
Relics of the Targaryen dynasty, such as dusty suits of black armor, sit in some corridors. Doors are made of oak banded with black iron. Sweet-smelling rushes can be spread on floors. The Red Keep is full of cats, including those kept as pets as well as strays.

People at the Citadel

Archmaester Perestan teaches history at the Citadel. He wrote A Consideration of History. Perestan's ring, rod, and mask are made of copper. He has a poor opinion of Archmaester Marwyn.

Archmaester Gallard teaches language at the Citadel. He is the author of Children of Summer, the chief source on the history of the Summer Isles in the Seven Kingdoms, which he wrote after translating the highly complicated, formal verses narrating Summer Islander history carved on the Talking Trees of Tall Trees Town. Gallard's ring, rod, and mask are made of tin.

Archmaester Ryam teaches sums and numbers at the Citadel. He has a poor opinion of Archmaester Marwyn. His ring, rod and mask are made of yellow gold. His maester's chain has no link of Valyrian steel.

Archmaester Walgrave teaches ravencraft at the Citadel. He is an elderly man who is losing his wits. Walgrave's ring, rod, and mask are made of black iron. He wrote a book about the subject called Black Wings, Swift Words. His chambers are located in the west tower of the Ravenry, below the rookery of the white ravens. The birds are Walgrave's pride, and he wants them to eat him when he dies.

Archmaester Ebrose teaches healing at the Citadel. The elderly man is kind and soft spoken. His ring, mask, and rod are made of silver.

Archmaester Benedict teaches accounts at the Citadel. He is well-known for being a pedant. His ring, rod and mask are made of red gold.

Archmaester Nymos teaches warcraft at the Citadel. He is a harsh taskmaster. His ring, rod and mask are made of iron.

Archmaester Castos teaches statecraft at the Citadel. The elderly man is eccentric and prone to distracted ramblings. His ring, road and mask are made of platinum.

Maester Walys was born a bastard son of a Hightower girl and an archmaester of the Citadel. After forging his chain, he served at Winterfell when Lord Rickard Stark was head of House Stark. Some, including Jon, suspect that Walgrave was the archmaester who fathered Walys.

Maester Gormon, born Gormon Tyrell, is a maester serving at the Citadel. He is an uncle of Mace Tyrell, Lord of Highgarden. He takes Archmaester Walgrave's place beneath the black iron mask to judge those attempting for the ravencraft link.

Maester Yandel is a maester of the Citadel who is eleven years older than Jon. Having finished his studies in 292 AC, Yandel remained at the Citadel, serving the archmaesters and aiding them in all that they required. Meanwhile, he set about completing his work, The World of Ice & Fire, and is glad of Jon's help in proofing the manuscript.

Pate is a novice of the Citadel and is two years older than Jon. He is pale, soft, and pasty-faced. He dreams of being a maester in a castle, respected and admired. His duties include looking after old senile Archmaester Walgrave, who sometimes thinks Pate is someone called Cressen, and tending the ravens in the Ravenry. The white ravens know his name, and often quork "Pate, Pate, Pate" whenever they see him. Originally from the westerlands, Pate is named after the folk hero Spotted Pate, the pig boy who always manages to save the day.

Mollander, often called Hopfrog, is a new novice at the Citadel from the Reach and is the same age as Jon. He has thick arms and broad shoulders. He has a clubfoot, which prevents him from becoming a knight, like his father.

Armen, better known as Armen the Acolyte, is an acolyte at the Citadel and is two years older than Jon. He has a long, thin, pointy nose. He has earned a tin link.

Leo Tyrell, known as Lazy Leo, is a member of House Tyrell, a first cousin of Mace Tyrell, the Lord of Highgarden. He is the second son of Ser Moryn Tyrell, the commander of Oldtown's City Watch. Leo is a long-term novice of the Citadel and is seven years older than Jon. Having sly hazel eyes and ash-blonde hair which falls over one eye, Leo stands out from the traditional brown eyes and brown hair of the Tyrells. He is handsome and pale, and has a soft voice. Leo dresses in satin striped in the Tyrell colors of green and gold. He has worn a black silk half cape, pinned to his shoulder by a jade rose, and a half cape striped in green and gold. The arrogant and malicious Leo often gives mocking names to his acquaintances, and speaks unpleasantly of Dornishmen and Summer Islanders. He is disliked by his fellow students. Leo sometimes gambles at the Checkered Hazard, to the point of losing all his money and having to beg for drinks from acquaintances. He has been trained to arms, and is known to be deadly with a bravo's blade and dagger.

Background

[Varys receives word of the events in the Tower of Joy from a servant and has it thoroughly investigated by a trusted sellsword. He decides to wait while baby Jon is in Winterfell. He stumbles on the relationship between Cersei and Jaime, and concludes that a new war is inevitable. He learns that a new sept has been built in Winterfell and conjectures that Eddard Stark is as short-sighted as all the other Starks. And so, when the Iron Islands rebel, he forces the man to send "the bastard" to the Citadel.]

[The Conclave assumes that Lord Stark intends Jon Snow to become the next Maester of Winterfell and decides to put special focus on the boy.]

Beginning of 290 AC : Six year old Jon arrives in Oldtown and is inducted into the Citadel as a novice. He attends lectures on history by Archmaester Perestan, lectures on language by Archmaester Gallard, lectures on numbers by Archmaester Ryam and lectures on ravencraft by Archmaester Walgrave.

Beginning of 293 AC : Nine year old Jon becomes an acolyte when he earns the first link of black iron, becoming the last novice to be judged by Archmaester Walgrave. He continues to attend lectures on history by Archmaester Perestan, lectures on language by Archmaester Gallard, and lectures on numbers by Archmaester Ryam. He starts attending other lectures with the intention of forging a full chain before manhood.
He has struggled to make friends due to his young age and bastardy, and thus spends most of his free time in the Isle of Ravens, the Library and the Scribe's Hearth. He exchanges a lot of letters with his father and half-brother with Walgrave's blessing.
Walgrave has a soft spot for Jon and often regales him with stories and tales, and frequently talks of Walys, the previous Maester of Winterfell, and the North.

Beginning of 297 AC : Thirteen year old Jon earns links of copper and tin from Archmaesters Perestan and Gallard, along with a link of black iron from Maester Gormon. He continues to attend lectures on money and accounts, sums and numbers, warcraft and statecraft, and healing. On the recommendation of Archmaester Perestan, he becomes an assistant to Maester Yandel.
He exchanges a few letters with his father and half-brother though the contents become more bland with each passing year. He spends the little free time he has at the weirwood tree with the ravens grieving for the loss of his family.
Leo Tyrell would have tried to befriend him, but he would have ended the relationship after realising that the man was a wastrel. He stops the attempted theft from the new novice Pate and covers for the boy in exchange for help to take care of the Ravenry. Pate is relieved at not having to face the Archmaesters and thus befriends Jon and intoduces him to the Quill and Tankard.

Middle of 297 AC : Fourteen year old Jon earns a link of yellow gold from Archmaester Ryam. He continues to attend lectures on money and accounts, warcraft and statecraft, and healing. Maester Yandel directs him to build a detailed index for the treatise, The World of Ice and Fire.
He goes with Pate to drink at the Quill and Tankard and gets to know Mollander and Armen.
He spends time with Archmaester Walgrave who is confined to the west tower.

End of 297 AC : Fourteen year old Jon continues to attend lectures on money and accounts, warcraft and statecraft, and healing.
He labours extensively to complete the index with many a sleepless night.
He goes with his friends to drink at the Quill and Tankard, and spends time with Archmaester Walgrave whose health is in rapid decline.

Beginning of 298 AC : Fourteen year old Jon earns a link of copper from Archmaester Perestan for his contribution to Maester Yandel's treatise, and a link of silver from Archmaester Ebrose. He continues to attend lectures on money and accounts, warcraft and statecraft. He attends the death ceremony of Archmaester Walgrave where the ravens eat all the meat and buries the bones next to the weirwood tree.
Maester Gormon succeeds Archmaester Walgrave to the ring, rod, and mask of black iron.
The news of Jon Arryn's death barely makes a ripple in the Citadel.
Pate earns a silver link while Armen earns a pewter link, and he celebrates with them at the Quill and Tankard.

[Varys uncovers Baelish's scheme and makes his own move by sending a secret message to Olenna Tyrell on the true parentage of Jon Snow. He also advises Eddard Stark to not accept the post of the Hand of the King which only makes the man suspicious of him.]

[Olenna sends word to Moryn Tyrell to ensure that Jon Snow has a favourable opinion of the Tyrells, and exchanges letters with various people to ascertain the veracity of the information.]

Middle of 298 AC : Fifteen year old Jon continues to attend lectures on money and accounts, warcraft and statecraft. Archmaester Gormon orders him to spend time with Leo Tyrell learning how to fight, and he grudgingly agrees when the man makes him the head of the Ravenry.
He states bluntly to Leo that he will never be the man's friend, and continues to attend the valuable lessons even after the man becomes harsh in training.
He goes with his friends to drink at the Quill and Tankard, and spends time with Maester Yandel discussing the history of Valyria.
He receives a message from Lord Stark about a possible trip to King's Landing and responds by declining to travel to the capital citing his studies.
The news of Robert Baratheon's death and Eddard Stark's arrest leads to a flurry of activity in the Citadel.

[Varys extracts letters and documents from Eddard Stark and sends a copy of some of them to Olenna Tyrell]

[After the declaration of war from the North, Olenna asks Archmaester Gormon to send Jon Snow to Highgarden]

End of 298 AC : Fifteen years old Jon earns a link of red gold from Archmaester Benedict. He continues to attend lectures on warcraft and statecraft and is preparing to take his vows as a Maester.
He goes with his friends to drink at the Quill and Tankard, and spends time with Maester Yandel discussing the history of Valyria.
Armen earns a lead link.
The declaration of war leads to an exodus of novices and acolytes from the Citadel, all hoping to acquire a patron among the various petty lords and knights.
Archmaester Gormon cajoles him into agreeing to go to the gathering Tyrell army at Highgarden by promising him the post of Archmaester wielding black iron in the succession.
Jon and Pate walk to Highgarden along with many other acolytes.
