The King of Dragons was none too pleased when she awoke to find a bunch of humans staring at her. She was even more irritated at the weapons they threw at her. She had literally just finished laying her egg and wanted to sleep, but these humans didn't seem to care. One of the humans' spears with a rope attached to the end managed to hit her close to the eye. She just swung her head to dislodge the spear and throw the human into an ice formation.
Now she was really fed up. Blasting them with ice was sure to deter them from bothering her again. In the process, she built up a wall of ice a disappeared behind it. She moved away, heading back towards her egg.
As she arrived below where her egg lay, she heard the sounds of humans fighting and a Night Fury. She glanced up in time to see her new egg fall toward her and a scrawny human going after it. The human caught the egg and hung it from a weapon that appeared to be on fire. She caught a whiff of human blood coming from the one holding her egg. It was clear that he was wounded and struggling to get back up to the top. One side seemed to be weaker than the other.
She found herself intrigued by the human risking its own life to protect her egg. Why would a human even bother? All they knew how to do was kill and torture her kind. She looked past the human and saw a black dragon standing with its back turned to the ledge. It was the Night Fury she had heard earlier. Why did it look like the young beast was protecting the human? Maybe forced servitude? She only knew of one human that actually cared about dragons, but that human was back at the nest, caring for the latest rescues.
Eventually, the human made it back to the top and seemed to send the dragon away. She couldn't hear what was happening, and the Night Fury's thoughts were too jumbled to make sense of what was happening. But from what she could see, the human sent the dragon away before safely returning to the top, only to be knocked back down. A human that she had recognized from earlier was holding a spear over the other one's head.
Without fully knowing why, she decided the human hanging over the cliff needed help. She released a blast of ice and wind, sending it straight up. The ice encased the threatening human, leaving it frozen for all eternity.
She continued to watch as the human tried climbing back up, only to fail. A strange sense of worry and concern befell her as the human fell into the abyss that shielded her. The Night Fury dove in after it trying to close the distance. She had to do something, or both would die. Acting quickly, the Alpha Dragon began to climb out of their resting spot once more. She released a concentrated ice blast that formed a makeshift slope that could safely catch the human, allowing the dragon to catch up and save it.
The Alpha directed her blast toward a small ledge big to hold the human and dragon. She watched as the Night Fury wrapped the human up within its wings as they both hit the slope. The black dragon took the brunt of the force of the impact as they slid safely to the ledge.
With her curiosity peaked, she continued to look at the two. The Night Fury unwrapped its wings and began looking over the human, which lay there, unmoving. Pity, she thought. I guess I wasn't quick enough.
The Night Fury let a series of concerning roars and croons, clearly displeased by the state the human was in. It was obvious to her now that the two were bonded, sharing a soul. Normally she didn't interfere with human lives, despite the fact that one lived in her nest. They meant nothing to her. However, this human was different. She could sense that the human meant a great deal to both its world and the dragon world.
Without much more thought, she decided to make contact with the Night Fury. Who are you?
The Night Fury turned and looked at its Alpha, pausing to bow. I am Toothless. This is Hiccup, my human. He is hurt very badly.
Why not pick him up and fly out, then? The Alpha mused.
I can not fly without him, Toothless explained, showing her his tailfin. Please help us get back up there. Once up there, I can run and get help.
Why should I help you? She asked. All humans are dangerous and kill us without provocation.
Not Hiccup. Toothless roared. He is a good human. He cares about us. He wants to protect us. Please, he is dying. I need to get him help.
What will you do in return for me, then? The Alpha asked.
I will make sure the egg is safe. Toothless promised. I know dragons and humans who will work to ensure it hatches safely and that no harm would come to it.
The Alpha pondered this for a moment. Night Furies were known to be self-centered, promising things they never intended to follow through. But this one was different. She sensed truth in his words. He was willing to do anything to save this Hiccup. She looked at the human before lowering herself down, offering her tusk for the Night Fury to climb on. She watched as he gently grabbed the human by his armour and dragged him over the tusk. Once the human was on, the dragon climbed aboard.
Hold on. She warned as she began the climb up to the top.
Thank you, the Night Fury replied, standing over the human to ensure he didn't fall off.
As they climbed, the Alpha looked into the Toothless' mind, reading his memories. He had been shot down and found by the human he protects now. They befriended one another and worked as one to defeat the Red Death. Together the two brought peace to the human's tribe and the dragons. They fought in many battles, protecting one another and their way of life. It was clear they shared a special connection, one that would last lifetimes.
Two bodies, one soul, The Alpha mused to herself.
Once at the top, the Toothless pulled the human off the tusk and far enough away from the edge before running off. The Alpha decided to stand guard, watching the human. She studied his features, making sure to remember them should they meet again. Something told her they would meet once more.
As she heard footsteps and roaring in the distance, she sunk back into the abyss that was now her former birth nest. Her business here was over, and there was no need for more humans to see her.
Astrid and Fishlegs ran beside Toothless, following him deep into the maze of the caverns. Something had happened to Hiccup, and time was of the essence.
As they came upon the open cavern, the two riders shared a quick look of horror and worry when they saw Hiccup lying motionless as a small pool of blood formed around him near a frozen Johann. Astrid was the first to regain her senses and ran toward Hiccup, falling to her knees to examine him.
"Left shoulder and head wound, cut on his cheek, his leg is missing, various bruising," Astrid listed off, checking each injury she could feel and see. She pushed her emotions down as she continued. "Pale complexion from blood loss. We need to get him out of here, fast. Hand me the medicine bag. We'll wrap up his shoulder and head, then take him to the healer."
Fishlegs handed off the bag. "I hope we're not too late."
Astrid said nothing as she pulled out a roll of bandages and began wrapping up Hiccup's shoulder over his armour. She then did a quick job of wrapping up his head before speaking. "I hope so too, Fishlegs."
She stood up, tossed the bag over her shoulder, and climbed onto Toothless. Fighlegs gingerly picked up Hiccup and helped secure his limp form in Astrid's lap.
"Grab the egg," Astrid ordered. "We need to make sure it stays safe."
Fishlegs did as he was told and picked up the egg just as Astrid and Toothless took off toward the exit.
