"I'm sorry I ruined your birthday," Buffy apologized.
"It's okay, Mom," Liam assured his mother.
"I know, but it's your thirteenth birthday. I wanted to do something special for you, especially before the baby came," Buffy explained rubbing her protruding belly. She knew Liam's premature birth would bite her in the butt later in life. If only he was born in October than she would have gone into labor on Liam's birthday.
The past nine months had been unexpected and chaotic to say the least. The night of Angel and Buffy's engagement, they unbeknownst to them at the time, conceived their second child. A child that had not made its presence known to the pair until Buffy had almost passed out during dinner on Valentine's Day. The pregnancy was a welcomed surprise to the couple. After the surprise of Liam thirteen years ago, it was only fitting that the second one would be unplanned as well. However, this time Buffy and Angel were running on a time constraint. They wanted to get married before the baby arrived. They didn't want to have to worry about a newborn during the ceremony. So at four months pregnant and with the help of bridesmaids Willow, Dawn, Cordelia, and Faith, Buffy and Angel were able to hastily tie the knot.
And so that brought Buffy and Angel to where they were today. It was Liam's thirteenth birthday and Buffy and Angel had planned to take him to LA for a football game, but before they even left the house Buffy's water broke. She knew she had been pushing it by trying to go to the game two days past due.
"Mom, what's more special than sharing my birthday with my little sister. Best birthday present ever," Liam said. While most kids would have hated sharing a birthday with an younger sibling, Liam was excited for it. He had wanted his parents to have another baby, but he didn't expect it to come so soon. His Uncle Spike had warned him of this, when Liam said he wanted to spend the night at Grandparents the day the two got engaged.
"How did I get so lucky with you?" Buffy asked her son as she leaned against the hospital bed, ready to brace herself for another contraction.
"Because he's got my genes," Angel interjected coming back into the hospital room with the ice chips she had sent him to get. Liam stood tall next to his father as he hit his growth spurt this past spring. Buffy swore it was like looking at a mirror image.
"All I hope is that this one looks like me," Buffy gritted her teeth as the contraction ripped through her. Once it was over Buffy had snagged Angel's ice chips.
"Liam, why don't you go sit in the lobby with everyone else," Angel suggested. The doctor was coming soon and Angel had a feeling that Buffy was ready to deliver.
"Okay, but I want to be first one to hold her after you guys," Liam bargained.
"Deal," Angel agreed, pushing Liam out of the room.
"He could have stayed," Buffy breathed out, relaxing slightly.
"Buffy, we don't want to traumatized the boy," Angel joked as Buffy shot him the dirtiest look. He didn't remember how scary pregnant Buffy could be. "I just wanted to spend this moment with you."Angel leaned down at his wife and softly kissed her.
"Hi, I'm Dr. McClay and I'm going to be delivering your baby since Dr. Feinstein is out of town. So how is Mommy doing?" Dr. McClay asked interrupting the couple's kiss.
"Horrible," Buffy complained. "I don't remember it hurting this much."
"That was thirteen years ago, right?" the doctor mused.
Buffy groaned in response as she felt the next contraction coming on.
"Okay, well, then let me take a look to see how far along you are," Dr. McClay said. A few moments had passed before the doctor had followed up. "You're fully dilated. When need to get you to the delivery room. Do you know who's going in with you."
"My husband," Buffy said, grabbing Angel's hand. They were only a few minutes away from meeting their daughter, neither could wait.
The delivery had been quick like Liam's. Her daughter wasted no time coming out into the world, but boy did she have a set of lungs. Unlike Liam who barely made a sound when he was born, she came out crying. After her vitals were taken, Buffy had nursed the child to soothe her while she sent Angel to go get Liam. However, Liam was not particularly fond of the sight he walked into.
"Mom!" Liam exclaimed, covering his eyes. He didn't care if his mom was feeding his sister, it still grossed him out. Buffy rolled her eyes as she finished nursing the little girl and buttoned her shirt back up.
"You know I did the same thing to you," Buffy teased, conjuring a mental image that Liam did not want to have. "Do you want to hold her?"
"Yeah," Liam said. He took his camera off and handed it to his dad as he went to retrieve his sister.
"Remember to support her head," Buffy reminded him as she gently handed her daughter to her son.
Liam held his little sister for the first time, a picture that Angel had captured on his son's camera. Liam had grown attached to the gift from his dad, always documenting the moment. "What's her name?" Liam asked.
"Katherine Faith Giles," Buffy explained. They had kept the baby's name a secret during the pregnancy like she had with Liam. While Buffy had chosen the name of their firstborn, Katherine's name had been chosen by Angel. He had no other excuse than liking the name, but he also wanted his daughter to share her middle name with her godmother, Faith. Buffy had picked Xander and Willow to be Liam's godparents thirteen year ago; it was only fitting that Angel's best friends were godparents to his daughter.
Katherine opened her eyes and stared up at her older brother. Liam noticed that they had the same green eyes and dark hair, but she kind of took after their mother.
"Now this photo," Angel said pointing to the camera, "is going with this photo." He dipped his hand into his front pocket and pulled out the image from when Liam was born thirteen years ago. Now he could have both his children with him at all times.
Liam pondered the last year as he gave Katherine back to his mother. His grandma had died which resulted in an embarrassing video of his parents releasing to the Sunnydale public. His dad had come back into his life, gaining two grandparents and a father in the process. Then he had ruined his mom's six-year marriage to Riley. It didn't take long after for Liam to officially become a Giles, his parents to wed and give him a little sister.
He gladly accepted the goodbye of his old life as today marked a brand new beginning, a hello of sorts.
