Chapter 2
Ruby was sitting by the window. It had been at least 15 days since she met Constantine. Short meeting had left her anxious. So much so, that it had affected her studies in the school. She had gotten in trouble with her teachers a few times and in the latest case, she had been sent to the office of the headmistress. And everyone in Signal was afraid of the headmistress Goodwitch. She was as strict disciplinarian as they did get.
Ruby sighed and went to her bookshelf where she had few books she loved more than any other. Weapons Of History. She read it, and dreamed of making herself something special. Something never seen before. She even had made a few sketches on separate papers between the pages. She was thinking if it was possible to combine firearms and regular weapons like swords and axes. Second book she loved told about heroes of the past. Both historical and fictional. Legends Of Our Time. Book she had gotten from her uncle Qrow as a birthday present. She treasured everything she had gotten from him, and even more so when she learned of Yang running away. Uncle Qrow had promised to look for her, but so far hadn't found anything. Ruby took the book about legends and sat on her bed to read it.
In the local railway station, a man dressed in a fine green suit, stepped off the train. He had a cane on his right hand, a brown suitcase on his left hand and round eyeglasses on his nose. His hair was gray and messy. He looked at his pocket watch.
"15:24. I suppose I am a little late. I wish he has been patient", Ozpin thought and walked forward, towards the forehand picked meeting spot. Ozpin looked around. It had been quite some time since he had had a reason to visit the city. It had grown little. Some new apartment buildings, some new architecture that challenged old style. Ozpin then began to eye the fountain that was in front of the station. Statues of four men holding a globe on their shoulders. But it wasn't the statue that interested him, but a young man wearing a green outfit, similar to his. Young man also had a brown bowler hat. Decorated with white feather. Ozpin walked to stand next to young man
"Excuse me young man, but could I bother you for a moment?"Ozpin said to the young man who didn't look at him, but kept his eyes on the statue.
"Yes, good sir?"
"Would you happen to know if this city is a good place for someone who is looking for the truth?"
"No, I don't think so. For all I know, nothing is true",the young man said, emphasizing the last three words.
"Suppose that means this City has a rather firm grip upon the many freedoms of the people?
"You would believe so. Sometimes it feels like everything is permitted".
After saying this, the young man turned himself towards Ozpin and bowed his head politely.
"Mentor. Honor to finally meet face to face"
"Happy to meet you Constantine. Mind taking this?" Ozpin asked and handed Constantine the suitcase, which he took to his left hand. They then begin their walk.
"So young man. You seemed to be quite sure that she is what we have been looking for?"Ozpin asked as they walked the sidewalk to the direction of the Signal.
"Yes sir. Not only her eyes, but this odd feel I got when meeting her. I am willing to pet on this case"
"Very well. It sure would be awkward if it would be like with your introduction to brotherhood"
"All because the guy getting me in can't tell the difference between gray and silver",Constantine said and smirked. Ozpin smiled
"Nonetheless you were able to learn the use of the eye faster than others",Ozpin said. Constantine shrugged.
"Even if she isn't aware of it, she even has an aura. Which is quite rare if one is not a trained warrior",Constantine said as they crossed the street to get to the gate of the school.
"On that, I agree",Ozpin said and rang the bell.
"Sir, will I stay outside and keep my eyes open for possible threats?"
"I don't believe it is necessary. But once we are inside, keep your eyes and ears open"
Constantine nodded as an older looking woman wearing black dress came to open the door for them.
"Good afternoon. I am professor Ozpin from Beacon academy, and this is my assistant Constantine Alders. We have an appointment with headmistress Goodwitch",Ozpin said, smiling politely and handing an invitation letter he had held inside of his breast pocket.
Woman looked at it thoroughly and nodded.
"Follow me gentleman", she said and led two men into the academy.
They eventually are led into the room of the headmistress.
"Ozpin. Long time no see", Goodwitch said, with no mentionable emotion on her face or voice. She wore an ankle long black skirt and white shirt. She held her blonde hair in knot.
"Glynda. Pleasure to see you again. I hope you have been well?", Ozpin said with a small smile.
"Yes. As good as one can be leading school undercover", Glynda said, lowering her voice a little bit. "You came here to meet Miss Rose?"
Ozpin nodded.
"Young here believes she may be one we have been searching for",Ozpin said and pushed his eyeglasses.
"I did take notice that she had the same last name as Summer, even though her father has a different name", Glynda said with a hint of sadness in her voice.
"Do you believe they are related by any chance?",Ozpin asked
"I strongly believe so. She has the same face as Summer. And same eyes",Glynda said. Ozpin looked at Constantine, who nodded.
"Silver eyes?"Ozpin asked from Glynda who nodded.
"What sort of girl is she? Has she shown any characteristics that call for attention?",Ozpin asked, rubbing his chin. Glynda paused to think.
"As a student, she is a little above average. But she has shown great talent in P.E. So it's safe to say her physical potential is greater than any girl her size should be possible. But recently, she hasn't been that focused on her studies. She seems to be more in her own thoughts and has gotten herself in trouble because of it",Glynda said. Ozpin smiled and looked at Constantine, who was spinning his thumbs.
"I might be the reason for that ma'am",Constantine said, trying to keep a straight face.
"Of course",Glynda said, shaking her head. "But I don't think she has shown any signs of being like Summer was".
"I shall be the judge of that dear Glynda. Could we please go see Miss Rose?",Ozpin said and stood up from his chair. Goodwitch nodded and rang a small bell, calling in a younger woman from an earlier room.
"Please guide these gentlemen to the room of Miss Rose"Glynda instructed a woman who nodded and gestured to two men to follow her. Woman took them to the eastern wing of the building and to the third floor. In the hallway, some other students were hanging out and spotted them, starting to whisper and giggle immediately while looking at Constantine.
Finally, the woman leading the duo knocked on the door with the number 1031.
Ruby quickly got up, waking up from the trance of reading the book. She quickly put the book back on the shelf and rushed to the door to open it.
"Miss Rose, Mr. Ozpin and his assistant have come to meet you",the woman said. Ruby noticed Constantine behind the older man and nodded, letting them in the room.
"Thank you miss. We will be able to continue from here",Constantine said and led the woman out of the room and closed it, stepping into the hallway himself too.
Ruby was little confused, but stayed quiet and stood next to her bed as Ozpin looked around the room. He spotted unusual books in Ruby's bookshelf and one on her bed.
"Good afternoon miss Rose", Ozpin greeted politely.
"Oh- Ah… Hello, Sir." Ruby bowed her head, curious as to whom this was.
"I see you weren't informed of my visit, were you?"Ozpin asked as he sat down on the chair of Ruby's desk while setting his suitcase on the table.
"I was told someone would come and talk with me… but not about why…" Ruby slowly crossed the room, sitting adjacent to him.
"Well, you have met my assistant, who stayed behind the door to keep curious ears away. He told me, that you might be something special and I saw it wise to come see it myself, should it be true",Ozpin said
Ruby quirked an eyebrow, unsure what he could have meant but felt in her gut this was about what she had seen.
"You see Miss Rose, me and few like minded people, have been looking for special people. People with gifts beyond normal human abilities. These people usually have some special, external characteristics. Such as…silver eyes", Ozpin said and began to open his suitcase.
Raising a hand to the corner of her eye she found what he said to be unbelievable, what could silver eyes have to do with someone being special? "And you think I am special?"
Ozpin smiled and nodded as he pulled out a stone tablet from his suitcase and handed it to Ruby.
"Please take a good look at this tablet Miss Rose and tell me what you see?"
Gripping onto the tablet, Ruby examined it first seeing a flat stone rock. Upon closer examination the inscription became evident, however she could not make sense of it.
"What is this?"
"What is it you see?"Ozpin asked, looking Ruby straight into her eyes.
"I'm not sure… I see symbols, but… What does this have to do with Silver Eyes?" Ruby set it down, feeling the cold chill rush over her body.
"Those with Silver Eyes can not only see these hidden symbols, but also somehow absorb their knowledge into their being. Did you feel anything when reading it?"
"I- I don't know… my hands feel… tingly…" Ruby looked at them, silhouetted by gold and silver. Her eyes widened upon seeing this… magic.
"Do you see golden or silver aura around your hands Miss Rose?", Ozpin asked, being now certain that they had found what they had been looking for.
"Y-yeah… what is happening?"
"Then I suppose we can speak openly. What you see is your aura. And you see it, because you are a descendant of a race that lived on Remnant ages ago. Before human civilizations. Me and people with the same goal, have been looking for your kind in order to help us secure freedom of both human and faunus", Ozpin said. As Ruby looked at him, she saw a similar aura around him, but only green.
Ruby's Aura rested into a rose red, and suddenly Ruby felt all the more calm. "And you think I can help?"
"Yes. I do. You may not believe it right now, but with little guidance, you can unlock abilities normal humans can only dream of. Become a warrior. Your blood, the blood of those me and my colleagues call Isu, makes you powerful. Not only physically, but mentally too"
"Is… what I saw what you all do? What I saw in the Market?" Ruby asked, a little fearful but somehow excited to know more.
"Yes. Young Constantine showed just a small portion what we can make of you. As he doesn't share your connection to Isu, he is limited in some matters that you will reach if trained properly"
"So… you want me to kill people? What could he have done that was so wrong?"
"Well. Yes. There is no hiding that if you join us, you will be pulled into a battle that requires you to take lives. But know that we do not kill senselessly. Only those we have deemed a threat for the ultimate goal of our brotherhood",Ozpin said, grimm look visiting his face.
Torrent wave of emotions hit, excitement at discovering something strange, fear for what might come, and an unshakable sense of dread for what might happen. But Ruby knew in her heart that the world needed help, and if she was going to change things her way, she needed to learn about this. Maybe then she could be like the Hero's in the books. "When do I start?"
"As soon as possible. I will arrange everything. We will test you, and see how you will fit. Or if we have to make you forget everything",Ozpin said, saying later half more to himself than to Ruby. He then stood up and put the stone tablet back into his suitcase.
"Once we are ready, we will contact you Miss Rose. And you will then understand everything",Ozpin said
"O-okay, and what was that about making me forget?" Ruby squeaked, but realized she wouldn't get an answer.
"Do not worry Miss Rose. I promise you will be alright, no matter the outcome. But know that your life will change from this day onward. Thank you for your time",Ozpin said and bowed before picking up his walking cane and suitcase.
