The first time she sees Kendall in person after stabbing him in the back is at their father's memorial. He doesn't speak to her and she thinks great, Ken will be the Uncle Ewan of their generation. He'll occasionally show up at Thanksgiving to yell at her and demand an apology for some long-forgotten grudge and her and Roman's kids will ask each other Why is Uncle Kendall so angry? Who knows.
She finally corners him just as he's about to leave. "Just to be clear, I still think I did the right thing."
"Uh huh," he says, pulling on his coat even though his driver is right outside.
"Being CEO would have been terrible for you."
"So you did it out of the goodness of your heart."
"No. I did it mainly for myself and my child. Wouldn't you do the same for yours?"
"I'm reliably informed I don't have kids."
"That was Roman, not me! Why does he get forgiven straight away but I have to beg?"
"I dunno, Shiv. You write open letters about me to the press, you scheme behind my back with Matsson, you use something I told you in confidence for why I can't be CEO… why would I ever trust you again?"
"You haven't been a saint either. Look what you did to Roman. You fucking tore open his stitches because he was a threat to you. You would have thrown both of us and Connor off a cliff to get to the top and you know it."
"You ruined my life." He finally meets her eyes.
She scoffs. "You ruined your own life, Kendall, I just watched."
Sophie and Iverson are coming out into the hall, followed by Roman. "Come on, kids," Kendall calls. "Say goodbye to your aunt."
So formal. Shiv remembers seeing her mother for the first time in a while as a teenager, Caroline's You're getting a bit chubby, darling. It must be all that American fast food.
"She's not chubby, Mom, she's fine," said Kendall, who had probably read about eating disorders in teenage girls in one of Shiv's magazines. "Yeah, she's fine," chimed in Roman, sibling loyalty winning out over Mummy dearest.
Roman punches Shiv lightly on the shoulder as he passes her and she rolls her eyes, glad that one of her brothers is being normal with her. Even Connor seems to have implicitly taken Kendall's side, saying that it's not right to betray one's family member.
Her baby kicks just as the door closes behind Roman.
