Professor Layton and the Living Dead
Chapter 2
Layton, Scarlett and Flora made their way to the library. They had decided to go there after establishing where they were standing in the investigation. Scarlett didn't remember anything other than kindness and compassion shown to her, sadly there wasn't anything else she could remember.
"Well, it seems that we will be in for quite the investigation.", Layton said taking the last sip of his tea. While Flora was excited serving as the Professor's assistant Scarlett seemed a bit uneasy.
"Do you really think that we will be able to find something?", Scarlett wondered.
"Of course. The Professor has solved even the greatest mysteries so far.", Flora tried cheering up the red haired woman, which seemed to help as Scarlett smiled at the girl. Layton, seeing how well Flora and Scarlett are bonding, he had no doubt that she would be of great help. Scarlett seemed to be a lot more relaxed with Flora around. If he would have to be doing this alone, he wouldn't have been certain that he could solve the mystery of the walking corpse.
"My, you are quite eager to help me, Flora. Well, I most certainly am grateful that you are with me.", Layton smiled at the young woman who smiled back. Scarlett watched them interact and felt a sting in her chest. It wasn't painful or anything but she felt like something was missing.
"Professor, may I ask what your relation is with Flora?", Scarlett was curious. Flora and Layton looked at her, trying to find a way to explain the crazy story of how they met to the amnesiac woman. Would it be a good idea to explain their story?
"You see, Baron Augustus Reinhold was looking for someone to take care of his daughter after his death. So he made up a puzzle to determine who would be worthy of that position. Well, as a British Gentleman, I couldn't that opportunity pass me by so to speak. As I unravelled the mystery surrounding the town dear Flora grew up in, I proved myself to be the perfect caretaker for Baron Reinhold's greatest treasure.", Layton explained, placing one hand on Flora's shoulder who smiled due to the action. Scarlett smiled as well. It was quite a sweet story.
"Do you have children?", Flora wanted to know, forgetting for a moment that Scarlett couldn't remember anything.
"I...I don't think so.", she replied, placing a hand on her chest where her heart is. Flora looked sad for a moment, regretting the question. The three then entered the library and started their search.
While Layton and Flora looked through old newspapers and other documents, Scarlett walked around the aisles aimlessly. She picked up a few books here and there, flipping through them and reading a bit what was written inside, not really paying attention. That however changed when she picked up a book and looked at the title. "Ancient History" by Donald Rutledge was written on the front and it was as if she knew the book.
"What would you like for Christmas, Scarlett?", a male voice asked her. She looked at the source of the voice, blushed a bit and looked down, fidgeting with her hands. They were sitting in a library, surrounded by other people. The source of the voice placed a hand on hers, smiling.
"I'll tell you if you tell me.", Scarlett replied, smiling at the faceless man.
"My dear, you know that there is no greater gift then being by your side.", he said. Scarlett chuckled. He had always been such a dork, but it was cute.
"There must be something you wish to have. And be it something small.", Scarlett explained, looking at him expectantly. He scratched his chin for a moment than smiled again.
"I would like a pocket watch. So I can count the minutes until I see you again.", he said, lifting her hand to his mouth and placing a kiss on the back of her hand, making her blush and pulling her hand away. The two have been dating for a bit, but it still felt a bit awkward, with how affectionate he was.
"Well, I would like a book about archaeology. It doesn't have to be something grand, just a book about the basics.", she stated. The two were silent for a moment, before he smiled again, very sweetly and nodded: "Okay"
The two met again shortly before winter break. As Scarlett headed outside, she could see him standing at the entrance waiting for her. As he spotted her, his featureless face lit up and he walked over to her.
"Here, my Christmas present for you. Don't open it before it's time, alright?", he said while handing her a small package. A blush came to her face as she mumbled a quiet "Thank you" before handing him a small box as well.
"I hope you will like it. It wasn't easy to find.", she stated, still having the blush on her face. He smiled and placed a kiss on her cheek.
"I am sure I will love it. I will see you after winter break, my dear Scarlett.", he stated before turning around and getting into the car parked in front of the entrance.
Christmas day rolls around and Scarlett unwraps the present she had gotten by him. It was a book titled: "Ancient History" written by Donald Rutledge. It made her smile, he didn't forget.
"Professor, I recovered a memory!", Scarlett exclaimed excitedly as she walked to Layton and Flora, still holding the book in her hands.
"That's splendid, Scarlett. Mind enlightening us?", Layton asked. Scarlett just shows him the book and said: "A man from my past had given me a copy of that book because I wanted to understand archaeology."
Layton was surprised. There weren't a lot of people interested in the Azran, his interest of them had died down after he had found the Azran sanctuary.
"Are you interested in the Azran?", Layton wondered.
"He was. He talked so much about them.", Scarlett answered. Another clue for Layton to figure out her past.
