Epic Quest
There's a word for someone who is not the best man to look up to: loser. They say that a loser can do nothing. He can't laugh in the face of danger. Can't do anything heroic for a girl. Can't think of what's right for all…. Until now.
Chapter One
[Ottawa, Canada]
There were two sixth grade boys, Rook Lloyd and Buzz Lights, who were school buddies at a private school called Stardust Academy. Rook was Caucasian had curly hair and braces. He was a nerd who disliked being outside. Buzz was also Caucasian, brownish-white trimmed hair, and freakishly tall. He was a goofball and he had a fondness for anime.
At recess, with all the kids playing outdoors, Rook and Buzz were near the fence talking to each other.
"I'm telling you," said Rook to Buzz, "it's going to be awesome. Michael Bay is directing a live-action movie of Transformers."
"I know. I'll be able to see it soon."
All of a sudden, they heard doors opening. They looked and saw a new kid. A miserable, depressed boy named Patrick Kraus. He had pinkish-white skin, brown hair and wore cargo pants and a t-shirt. Rook and Buzz noticed how lonely he looked.
Patrick walked down the stairs but he was tripped over by a school bully named Burgundy.
Burgundy laughed and told the new kid "Where'd you learn to walk, cripple school?" He clapped his hands. "Nice." Then he walked off.
As Patrick regained his bearings, a brunette-haired girl named Chelsea came over to help him out.
She asked "Are you alright?"
"Yeah, I'm okay-" Patrick replied, glaring at Chelsea's face. She was very beautiful to him. "I…. I'm not hurt at all."
"Thank goodness." she said. "Burgundy usually hurts people like that."
A South American boy wearing green clothes named Elmo called Chelsea "Hey Chelsea, get over here. We're still playing basketball."
"Coming, Elmo." she said. Chelsea turned back to Patrick. "Anyway, nice to meet you."
She walked away, leaving Patrick behind. As Patrick turned away, Rook and Buzz came over to meet the new kid.
"The dude who tripped you is Burgundy." said Rook. "He's always been a pain-in-the-butt to any kid. You're new here?"
Patrick said "Uh, yeah. I just got transferred here. From Aylmer. I'm Patrick."
"This here is Rook," Buzz interrupted, "and I'm Buzz. We've come to see how you're doing. And we notice you just met Chelsea."
"Who?" asked Patrick.
"The girl you met a second ago."
"Look, man." said Rook. "If you're feeling a little uncomfortable here, you should stick with us. That way, you won't be so blue."
"Well, I've got nothing to do. So I'm in." Patrick accepted.
Time passed on, and the trio have become best friends. At the end of the school year, they had their graduations. As summer vacation was on its way, the trio were at the sidewalk waiting for their parents to pick them up.
"Yahoo!" exclaimed Patrick. "Finally the summer's here."
"I can't wait for the Transformers movie this month." said Buzz.
"Tell you guys what." Patrick said. "We should always be together like this. Like we should live together when we grow up. And, if possible, have our adventures together. Just the three of us. Travelling from place to place."
That's something Rook didn't want to do. Because he disliked the outdoors, but since he didn't want to make Patrick feel bad, he lied to him "Yeah. I think we should."
As the years passed, they had no adventures. However, the trio have stayed friends for a long time.
It was now the present day. In their apartment at 151 Bay St., Patrick, now 20 years old, was watching Buzz, 18½ years old, play Pacific Rim: the video game on PS3 in the living room. Buzz was playing as Cherno Alpha against Slattern, but he lost the match.
"Oh no! No!" shouted Buzz. "No! Not again!"
Patrick said "Damn. You almost had him."
"That's the twelve time this week I've tried to finish this game." Buzz complaint. "I'm never gonna to defeat Slattern."
"Sure, ya will, Buzz. In fact, you're better at this game than I am."
"But Cherno Alpha sucks. It's a Mark 1 Jaeger and Slattern's a Category 5 Kaiju." Buzz decided to save his game before shutting it down. Switching the screen to TV, he saw YTV playing Pokémon Heroes. "Yes! Pokémon's on." he cheered.
Just then, Rook, up to 21, came over wearing a towel around his waist and looked at Buzz with an annoyed behaviour.
He said "Buzz. When I say 'hit the showers', that's just an expression! I meant WASH yourself; not break the shower head with a baseball bat."
"Sorry. I couldn't help myself." said Buzz.
Patrick interrupted "Guys, c'mon. I have no time to hear this. I've got to pay rent on time this month and I-"
Then Rook interjected "Oh, by the way, Patrick. Weren't you supposed to be with Chelsea at Byward Market Square today?"
"Chelsea?!" gasped Patrick realizing he didn't notice the time. "Oh, shit. I gotta go, guys. I'm gonna be late." He put on his shoes and dashed away out of the door.
Rook came over to Buzz, seeing he's watching Pokémon. "Buzz," he asked, "when will you ever stop watching this crap?"
"I love anime." said Buzz. "I see no reason why I should stop watching them."
"Well, I think this is what's making you lose your focus on things." Rook said, being a little worried about his roommate's brain getting mashed with anime in his head. "I think, if it's not too late, you could find a hobby."
"I need a hobbit?" puzzled Buzz.
"No, a hobby. Not a hobbit."
