Chapter 1: Prologue
Five years ago…
"Mom, look! The castle is so huge! Do you think a supervillain lives there or something?" Fuutarou yelled.
"Settle down, Fuutarou." Fuutarou's mother (I'm going to call her Shizuku like Blackflame7 did) said, ruffling his spiky blond hair. "We've almost arrived, and you should save your energy for Kyoto."
To her right, a tall blond man that looks like an older version of Fuutarou starts chuckling. "Well, a trip to Kyoto would make any kid hyper Shizuku. After all, it's been forever since we went on a trip as a family. He's super excited just like me!"
Laughing softly, Shizuku replies, "I suppose. Well, Raiha must not take after you like Fuutarou does." Sure enough, Raiha is snoring lightly on Shizuku's lap.
Just thirty minutes later, the family of four arrived at their location in Kyoto. Their family consisted of Shizuku and Isanari, as well as their children Fuutarou and Raiha. While Fuutarou was the most popular kid of his middle school due to his shockingly good looks and performances on their school's swim team, he was also known for his academic ability, as he always placed first in his school in every subject. As a result, Shizuku and Isanari decided to take him to Kyoto as a reward for placing first in his year again over his break. They both wanted to see Fuutarou happy, as he seemed to be getting bored of the same thing every day.
"Don't wander too far away Fuutarou! Kyoto is a big place, and you might get lost," Shizuku called out to Fuutarou, who had already taken his father's camera and was now taking pictures of anything that moved, whether it be their train pulling out of the station or a person playing the guitar.
"I know! I'll be right back, I want to see if there's anything else interesting here!", Fuutarou called out, as he began gravitating towards a vending machine near what seemed to be a souvenir shop. He had just taken out some of his allowance money when he heard a scream coming from the back of the store, which grabbed his attention and caused him to turn that way.
'That sounded like a girl's scream! I wonder what could have happened. I should go check just in case they need my help.'
~Fifteen minutes before…
Unbeknownst to Fuutarou and his family, a similar family with five beautiful identical girls had just arrived in Kyoto as well only a few minutes after they had, although they had come in a limousine.
"Mouuu, I'm hungry! Is there a food stand somewhere near here?", One of the identical girls said, looking around hopefully while munching on a corn dog.
"If you keep eating so much Itsuki, you're gonna become fat. We just got here!", retorted another girl, who looked around as well, " I wonder if there are any castles around here. I want to meet a prince!" (Could change)
Yawning, a girl who clearly looks the most mature of the five sleepily said, "Now, now Nino. We wouldn't want to lose you just yet, would we? At least wait until we're a bit older before you go running off with a man and leave us all sad."
"I could really care less, Ichika. At least I wouldn't have to share with her anymore if she was living with someone else.", said the fourth girl in the group, who had an aura of boredom around her.
"Cheer up Miku! We're in Kyoto, shouldn't you be more excited? I know I am, so there's no need to be so gloomy! Let's go!", Shouts the final girl, who jumped up in joy as she began running before bumping into a tall man with blond hair, who held her to stop her from falling.
"Yo Maruo, long time no see. I assume these are you and Rena's daughters? They look identical.", chortled the man, as the small girl could only look at the man in amazement at how he knew both her father and mother.
"Yotsuba, you should have been more careful. If Isanari hadn't been there to catch you, this trip could have ended right now. How about you and your sisters go to that souvenir shop over there while I catch up with this airhead here.", Maruo lightly scolded his daughter before turning to his old friend, "Yeah, they're quintuplets. Is your wife here as well? We haven't met up in forever, and I'm sure that we both have some stories to share. How about we go for a few beers later? It's on me."
Chuckling, Isanari said, "Sure! Shizuku is over at that bench right now because our daughter Raiha fell asleep. I'm sure she'll be ecstatic to see you and Rena-sensei, right sensei?"
"Yes, I believe there is so much we need to catch up on. After all, since when did you have a daughter?", said Rena, as she looked her old student in the eyes, "Have you been treating Shizuku right? You better be, because I'm going to ask her when I see her."
While the three of them were talking, the five girls had all walked off towards the previously mentioned souvenir store, but before they could walk in the door, they were stopped by some nasty boys who looked to be one or two years older than them.
"Who are you, and what do you want from us?", replied Ichika, sensing danger. She knew that they were most likely up to no good, and as the oldest of the five, felt an obligation to step forward like she always would.
"Well, you five seem pretty rich. How about you give us all your money, and we let you go?", said the biggest boy of the bunch, who had a metal bat and brandished it like a sword. From a glance, he seemed to be a gangster, with a big gash over his right eye and tattoos all over his right arm.
Back to the present time…
'That didn't sound good! I hope I can get there in time before anything happens.' Fuutarou thought, as he picked his pace, all thoughts of getting a drink forgotten in the face of possible trouble. Being a model student meant that people always thought of him to probably be weak and helpless whenever they heard of him. However, he also always protected his friends and classmates from bullies, although he often got into trouble with the teachers as a result, giving him a bad reputation with adults while his classmates adored him, especially the girls. As a result, he was in extremely good shape, as well as having fighting experience (going to be important in like twenty seconds).
As Fuutartou sprinted around the corner, he saw five identical girls cowering from three boys that looked to be a few years older than him. Being smart, he knew that this was not a fight he should be getting himself into and that it would be better to get a police officer or adult. Still, he couldn't just run away from people who needed his help. So, without thinking, he launched himself at the biggest boy of the three, remembering what his dad had taught him when he had his first bullying experience.
"Remember Fuutarou, if you're ever outnumbered in a fight, go for the biggest guy first. He's probably the leader, and if you get him, the rest of them are going to be confused. If you can't, you should probably have ran away to start with. Hahaha!''remarked Isanari, as talked to wide-eyed Fuutarou who was listening intently.
Taking his father's advice, Fuutarou managed to land a punch on the boy, who fell comically from the single punch. Startled, the other two boys stepped back, giving Fuutarou the window of time he needed to shove them into one another and onto the floor. Finally, he kicked the big dude in the stomach, which caused him to fold over in pain.
"What's your problem? Are you going to make me beat you up even more or are you going to leave before that happens?" snarled Fuutarou. Although ordinarily and relaxed and kind, he had no tolerance for bullies, and was known for being extremely harsh towards anyone that harmed his friends and would not hesitate to bloody them up in a way uncharacteristic of his caring self.
"AHHH! Run, or we're not gonna see the light of tomorrow! We'll be back!" yelled the boy, as he and his two lackeys scrambled backwards and away from the blond boy, who had already turned around in concern for the five girls, who thankfully seemed to be unhurt, albeit a little bit frightened.
"You saved us! You're our hero!" said one girl, as she launched herself into the blond boy's arms, causing him to blush slightly from her contact. She saw him as her prince that had just rode to her and her sisters' rescue. She had always known her type was a bad blond boy who could protect her, and here he was, just as she imagined him to be.
Blushing slightly, Fuutarou replied, "Are you girls okay? Did they hurt you in any way?"
Another one of the girls giggled, and said, "We're all fine. They didn't do anything to us, thanks to you. I suppose that makes you our hero. What's your name? I'm Ichika, the oldest of us five." Said the girl, whose name was revealed to be Ichika. She was slightly invested in this boy now, partially because he saved them, but also due to how Nino had acted. Usually, Nino was rude and often downright vindictive towards anyone who approached her or her sisters, especially if they were a boy. However, heere she was, launching herself into a boy's arms like she was some damsel in distress. This would be interesting to watch.
"I'm Fuutarou Uesugi. But are you five related or something? You all have the same beautiful face, and even the same beautiful red hair."
All the girls immediately became as red as their hair, and one of the girls finally spoke up after recovering from being called beautiful.
"Hai! We're all sisters, quintuplets in fact! I'm Yotsuba, nice to meet you!" Shouted another one of the girls, who began giggling.
"I-I'm Miku. Thank you for saving us."
"No problem Miku! I was passing by anyways, and I can't just ignore people in need!" chuckled the boy as he grinned at the shy girl, who blushed and looked down.
"I'm Itsuki. Nice to meet you!" said the last girl, who smiled at him.
"I see! Well, your parents must be near here somewhere. I'll help you guys find them, so let's go!" remarked Fuutarou, before saying, "Lead the way!"
"Sure. By the way, do you do sports Fuu-kun? You're so strong!" said Nino, as she grabbed Fuutarou's hand and started walking towards where Maruo and Isanari were.
"Yeah, I'm the captain of my school's swim team. But Fuu-kun, Nino?" replied the boy, who blushed slightly at Nino's touch, as he found her and her sisters extremely pretty.
"Yeah, it's my nickname for you! Do you not like it?" pouted the girl, who used her (and her sisters') secret skill: the puppy eyes.
"No, I really like it!" replied the boy, causing the girl to smile widely.
"Excuse me Fuutaarou-kun for asking this, but how do you know that she was Nino? No one ever manages to tell us apart from each other", questioned Ichika, who looked at him carefully for any reaction.
"Wel, it was pretty obvious. Her voice is slightly higher than the rest of you (i rlly dont know im horrible at recognizing voices but I'd expect her VA in the anime to have a higher voice), and she seems to be the boldest of you. Finally, there was a certain energy which I guess I can't explain, haha." replied Fuutarou, who scratched his head bashfully.
'Wow, Mama always told us that only the people who truly loved us would be able to tell us apart from one another. That's why only she, Dad, and Grandpa can tell which one of us is who. He must be different from everyone else. I wonder if he would even like me or one of my sisters?' wondered Miku, who, in the moment, felt a rush of adrenaline and grabbed onto Fuutarou's other arm, causing him to be extremely startled before calming down when he saw it was just another one of the sisters.
"Wow Miku, you just scared me there. Well, let's get going. I wouldn't want your parents to get worried because of me!" said Fuutarou, before telling Nino to lead the way. However, what he didn't notice was the glare Nino shot at Miku for approaching "her Fuu-kun", as well as the pouts noticeable on the other quints' faces, although the reason was unclear.
As they walked towards where Maruo and Isanari were now joking with one another, laughter could be heard from some civilians as they saw a young boy with five identical girls practically clinging to him as they walked away from the store.
5 minutes later…
"There you are girls! Where were you? Me and your dad were so worried!"Said Rena, as she scolded the five girls for being gone so long before noticing the boy sandwiched between two of her daughters, "And who is this boy you five brought along with you?"
"Hello ma'am, I'm Fuutarou. I just found your daughters when I was walking by, and I wanted to make sure they found their parents. Nice to meet you!", Replied Fuutarou, smiling at the woman.
Suddenly, a thunderous laugh could be heard from Fuutarou's right, startling both him and Rena.
"Haha! Fuutarou, you're gone for ten minutes, and you manage to find Rena-sensei's daughters, who now are clinging to you for dear life!", Chortled Isanaei, causing the quintuplets to blush at being called out, "You really have the same luck with girls as I do!"
"Yeah, I guess. But Rena-sensei?" Questioned Fuutarou, who looked at his father, confused.
"Yeah. This idiot, your mom, and I were all students of Rena. You should have seen him back in his highschool days. Your mom practically had to fight off a horde of girls every day just to keep your dad from them." Smirked a man who was holding Rena-sensei's hand, who Fuutarou deduced to be the quintuplets' father.
"Yeah, your dad was probably always looking at other girls the second I would look away for even a second", hissed Shizuku, while Isanari could only sweatdrop at his wife's murderous glare.
"Well, that was a long time ago, haha. Moving on, are you six fine? Did anyone hurt you?", Said Isanari, clearly trying to change the subject and shift the attention from himself.
'He's so hot just like Fuutarou! Does it run in the family or something?' wondered Nino, before blushing and burying her face into Fuutarou's arm.
"We're f-fine. Fuutarou saved us before the bad boys could hurt any of us. He's our h-hero." Stuttered Miku, surprising herself as well as Rena.
'Wow. Even the shyest of my daughters have warmed to you, Fuutarou-kun. I wonder if there is something special about you just like your parents are.' wondered Rena
"It's no problem Miku! I always help those in need, especially people who need to be protected by bullies. If you or your sisters ever need me to protect you, just say my name and I'll find you one way or another!" Said Fuutarou.
"I agree with Miku. Regardless of what you thought at that moment, protecting us was something you didn't have to do, but you still did. I suppose that does make you our savior and hero, or even our prince might I add.", Said Ichika, looking at Nino when she said the last statement.
"Fuutarou-kun, do you want to play with me? Let's go over there!" Shouted Yotsuba, who grabbed Fuutarou and pulled him over to a nearby area with a playground. Pouting at their sister's sudden move onto Fuutarou and not wanting to be left behind, the other quints quickly followed the two, who had already started playing with a ball that Yotsuba had brought.
"Isanari, your son must be something special to have recognized two of my daughters without any external help. I wonder if…" remarked Maruo, breaking the silence between the adults as they watched their children play for what could be the last time for the next few years to come.
One day before both their trips end…
Both Fuutarou and the quintuplets had spent much of their trips together, where the quints competed for Fuutarou's affections, much to the boy's charigan and his parents' amusement. Although none of the children realized their behavior, it was clear to their parents that they loved each other, causing them to come to an agreement after a heated argument that only really ended when they saw the quints had fallen asleep with Fuutarou, their truly peaceful expressions showing their parents the answer they had been searching for.
"Before we leave, I'd like to say something" began Maruo, who along with Isanari had gathered the two families at a park near the hotel that both families had happened to rent out for the trip, "After this day, my family and I will most likely not see any of you for a few years."
"What? Did something happen?" Fuutarou was shocked. Although he found it slightly irksome that the quintuplets were so competitive in getting his affections, he would be lying if he said that this trip was ten times better because he was with them, and that they made him happier than anyone else in the world. He desperately wanted to see them even after this trip and was actually going to ask if they could set up playdates even after they returned home.
"Well, I finally got a job promotion, and we're moving to [insert city name here] because I was called to be the manager of the biggest hospital there. As a result, we will most likely not be able to come to visit any of you for a while, even if it means I don't get to see this idiot here for a few years. Actually, that doesn't sound so bad." mused Maruo, causing Isanari to cry comical tears due to the hurtful comment from his old friend, "Regardless, before we go, I have a question to ask you. Fuutarou, do you truly love my daughters? From your behavior, I believe I already have my answer, but I want to hear it from you."
Blushing at the question, Fuutarou replied, "Yeah, I guess. They make me really happy, and I would love to be able to see them again. Why are you asking me though?"
Hearing this answer made Maruo smile slightly while Isanari, Shizuku, and Rena smiled brightly at his answer. Seeing the young boy's confused expression as well as his daughters blushing, he decided to reveal his reason behind his question and said, "Well, I suppose I'll tell you the reason now. After much debate and argument, your parents and us have come to an agreement; You are to be betrothed to my daughters, and you will marry them when we return to Asahiyama, whenever that may be."
"What? What do you mean?" Fuutarou was shocked. This entire day had already been a roller coaster for him, first from the fact that it was his last day in Kyoto with the quints and then the fact that he would possibly never see them again. This was the best news he could have ever received, and looking hopefully at Maruo, he asked, "You're not joking?"
"I would never. That's reserved for your father." replied Maruo, looking pointedly at Isanari before turning to his daughters, "I suppose I have my answer from Fuutarou-kun. Now what about the five of you? Be honest. I want to know what you really feel, not what you think you should feel."
'I wasn't sure of my feelings for Fuutarou, but hearing him say that he loves us with such certainty changed my mind; I finally understand what that feeling in my heart this entire trip was: love. From the moment my sisters and I met him, I've had this feeling in my heart. I still remember the moment he saved us. He was clearly scared at the sheer disadvantage he had, but he overcame it to save us. He is able to hide his emotions well, just like me. I wonder if he would want to help me in my dream to become an actor?'
"I would happily marry you Fuutarou-kun. However, I also have a request: Could you please become an actor? It's always been my passion, and I would love it if you were to share a passion with me" Ichika's voice floated out melodiously, causing Fuutarou to smile widely at her answer.
"Sure! I'll become the best actor in the world for you Ichika! I hope I'll see you in a big-time movie sometime soon!" replied Fuutarou, giving her his best smile and causing the other quints to pout at how Ichika grabbed the boy's attention.
"Well, I suppose the next person to ask would be you, Nino. What is your decision?" questioned Maruo, looking at his second oldest daughter.
'Of course I would marry Fuutarou! The only problem I have is that I would have to share with my sisters, but I can't just say no! He's my prince, and I want him all to myself! I suppose I'll just have to take all his attention for myself when we meet again, haha.'
"I'll happily marry you Fuu-kun! But you're also going to have to promise me something: You'll always remember me and come to my rescue if I'm ever in danger." Nino chirped, looking at Fuutarou with pleading eyes while hugging his arm.
"Of course Nino! I'll always protect you and your sisters; I'll find a way to save you, whatever it takes!" said the boy, causing the poor girl to blush and bury her face deeper into his chest, which she found to be a heavenly experience.
'Mouu, why do I feel so jealous when Nino does that? Is it because he's my friend and I'm just jealous? No, it's something deeper than that. Could it be love? He saved me and my sisters without a second thought, just like the warlords that I always would read about with Mom.'
"I-I agree with Nino. Y-you saved us from those bad people when nobody else did, and you can even recognize us from one another. I also have a request: I really like history, so can you learn it so you can talk to me about it?" asked Miku, looking at Fuutarou hopefully for an answer.
"Sure, Miku. History has always fascinated me, and if it's your favorite subject, I'll make it mine as well! After all, I'll do anything for my future wives!" said Fuutarou, smiling at Miku, causing her and her sisters to turn redder than their hair.
Rena smiled softly at the scene, as she wanted her daughters and Fuutarou to make their decisions without any interference from her, Maruo, Isanari, or Shizuku. She was originally surprised by how studious Fuutarou was, as it was a drastic difference from the troublemaker in Isanari that she dealt with when she had him as a student. However, she could see their resemblance to one another clearly now, as Fuutarou seemed to have the same effect on her daughters as Isanari had with 99% of the female population in their high school.
'Fuutarou is always so nice to me. He always plays with me, and even has the stamina to outlast me even when I'm trying my hardest. He's clearly hardworking, and I wish I could stay with him longer. However, I suppose this is my only choice if I want to have him be in my life.'
"Shishishi! I'll happily stay with you Fuutarou! But I also have a request," Yotsuba moved closer to the boy until they were only inches apart, "You'll keep on doing sports and being nice to others! When I see you again, you better be popular and have a bunch of friends!"
"Of course, Yotsuba. Why wouldn't I be nice to other people? I'll also keep doing sports, so I'll have the strength to protect you and your sisters if I ever need to!" Fuutarou replied, confused at why Yotsuba had to specify the second part while the gods could only sweatdrop at what Fuutarou could have become.
"Itsuki?" Promoted Maruo, looking at his youngest daughter. From what he observed, she was the shyest towards Fuutarou, often turning away and turning red whenever he helped her, such as when he gave her his ice cream after she had dropped hers. Still, he waited for her answer, as he was not completely sure of what her answer would be.
'What is Fuutarou-kun to me and my sisters? Well, I suppose the answer is obvious for my sisters, but what about me? He's nice, but isn't it too early to think of him that way?'
Watching Itsuki seemingly worried and in deep thought, Fuutarou suddenly felt the obligation to say something, and put an arm on her shoulder before saying, "Itsuki, look at me. I don't want you to make your decision based on what you think your sisters or parents want you to do. You're your own person, and even if you don't like me, you'll still be my best friend."
'Well, I suppose I have my answer. It doesn't matter what other people think of me and my sisters; Fuutarou is different from any boy I've met in a good way.' Itsuki thought, before replying, "Well, my answer is yes! I assure you, it was completely my choice. However, I also have a r-request: Keep studying and become smart so that you can teach me!"
"I promise you Itsuki, I'll be so smart when we meet again that you won't even recognize me!" Fuutarou grinned at her as he was struck with a thought, "I'll be right back! Wait for me guys!"
As the quints, their current parents, and future parents watched Fuutarou sprint off to God knows where, they couldn't help but reflect on what had just happened.
To the quintuplets, this was the best thing they could have asked for; the boy of their dreams had just been betrothed to them, albeit they now had to share. However, their thoughts were still all basically the same; they were thinking of ways to make the boy notice them when they would be reunited.
For the quintuplets' parents, while they were happy for their daughters, Maruo was slightly salty at the entire thing. This had only happened because he lost a bet with Isanari, prompting Isanari to ask this of him. He had originally refused, expecting his wife to back him up. After all, who marries all five of their daughters to one man? However, Rena had actually discussed this with Isanari before Isanari had made the bet with Maruo, as she had seen how special Fuutarou was to the quintuplets.
For Shizuku and Isanari, they were both overjoyed at the thought of their only son having such great luck with women. Specifically, Isanari could barely contain the grin on his face that he knew would piss Maruo off even more while Shizuku was reflecting on how her son was following in his father's footsteps already.
'Like father like son' thought Shizuku, smiling nostalgically at the quests and challenges she had to overcome to keep Isanari all to herself.
Five minutes later…
"I'm back! I got some things for you girls. For you Ichika, I got you a pair of earrings that are the exact same as the one on my right ear. That way, we'll be matching even when we're not together." Said Fuutarou, handing the earrings to a beaming Ichika.
"Thank you Fuutarou-kun! You've made your onii-chan super happy!" Replied Ichika, blushing slightly.
"For you Nino, I have these butterfly ribbons. You're really fashionable, and I feel these would look beautiful on you." Said Fuutarou, holding the ribbons out to the girl, who accepted them with a smile.
"Thank you Fuu-kun! If you think they look good on me, then I'll wear them all the time for you." Replied Nino, who put the ribbons before twirling around for the boy, "How do I look?
"You're beautiful Nino, especially with them." Said Fuutarou, causing her to smile. He then turned to Miku and held out what seemed to be an expensive pair of headphones, "These are my favorite pair of headphones, and I want you to have them. I know that you might be shy, and I want to help you with that by giving you this. Plus, I feel they would look pretty cute on you."
'Fuutarou called me cute? I'm so happy!' thought Miku, before replying, "Thank you so much Fuutarou! I'll treasure these for the rest of my life!"
She then dove into his arms, surprising him before he hugged her back. After what felt only like seconds for the two but was in reality minutes for the bystanders, a jealous Nino finally had to pull Miku off her man. After all, they already had their moment and there was no reason for Miku to keep holding on to her future husband.
Blushing slightly at how he got distracted, Fuutarou then took out an orange ribbon that he gave to Yotsuba before saying, "Yotsuba, I can tell that you're the most athletic of your sisters, and I really enjoyed playing around with you. However, I noticed that your hair always got in the way, so I want to give you this ribbon to tie your hair with. I hope you like it!"
"I love it Fuutarou! But, what if I tied it like this?" Yotsuba questioned, before tying it on her head so it looked like she had bunny ears, "Does this look good on me?"
"Yeah, it really suits you Yotsuba! It works perfectly while making you look cuter than you already are!" said the boy, causing Yotsuba to beam while her sisters could only look at her with their eyes filled with jealousy.
"Itsuki, I have these star hairpins for you. I really liked them when I saw them, and I feel like they would really fit you. So, will you accept them as my parting gift to you?" asked Fuutarou, as he held out the two pins towards Itsuki.
"Sure Fuutarou! Let me just try them on real quick," Itsuki started to say, as she put one on each side of her hair before nervously asking, "How do I look?"
"You look amazing! I'm glad you like it." replied Fuutarou, before turning to all the quintuplets and saying, "Well, this is it. I hope that we can be reunited as soon as possible; when we do, I promise to make the five of you the happiest girls in the world!"
Five years later…
"A yakiniku set with the meat, please." said a tall, handsome blond boy to the cafeteria lady during a seemingly typical school day.
"Coming right up! Fuutarou, you really are forgetful though. What would you have ordered, a yakiniku set without the meat?" replied the cafeteria lady, who smiled softly at him before going to get his order.
