Kim had agreed that she'd take Makayla home for dinner and as normal a night in their own home as she could and that Kevin would sit with Adam until the end of visitor hours. Or until he wasn't allowed to negotiate an extension to his stay; whichever came first.
Once Kim and Makayla left with a promise to call and say goodnight later Kevin started to get hungry himself.
"So; you allowed to eat or do you have some special diet?"
"Nah, I can eat. You'll be disappointed in that cafeteria though."
"No doubt. How about I order us a pizza? You can have whatever you're up for?"
"Dude, sounds amazing," Adam answered with a yawn. It had been a long afternoon and he managed to keep up with Makayla's ever ending energy but the toll was definitely about to be paid.
"Alright, I'm going to order it to be delivered in about an hour. You are going to take a nap. Got it"
"Geez, you're just like Kim. I'll be fine. I don't want to be the boring guy who sleeps on his friend while he visits."
"Bro, you'll be doing me a favor. I've got tennant emails to answer. I'll wake you up after picking up the pie downstairs. Maybe…"
"Funny, haha. Thanks Kev. For everything." And with that Adam shut his eyes. He didn't need to ramble off a list; he knew he'd make up for it somewhere. They didn't keep score like that.
As he came to, he heard two voices chirping away in his room about the off season moves the Bulls had made; and others they didn't make. He recognized one as Kevin's immediately, the other he knew but couldn't place until he opened his eyes. It was Shauna, she had come by to say hello prior to her shift starting at 7 and evidently met Kevin.
"See, I told you he'd wake up once he smelled the pizza" Kevin boasted to Shauna
"Sure… it's all the pizza and not you gabbing on and on about your precious Bulls" Adam retorted
"I'll leave you two boys to it. I'm going to go catch up with your staff from today. Judging by that board you've done pretty well for yourself. Give a ring if you need anything. It was nice to meet you Kevin"
"Feel free to come back and chat ball anytime you want. This guy tends to be limited to sports with frozen surfaces" Kevin replied pointing to Adam as he began to sit up so he could get into his chair.
"You need help?"
"Nah man I got it. Gotta take it in stages but I get there. Which strangely leaves me feeling rather accomplished. Also; she likes you"
"What? Your nurse? You sure you haven't been slipping any of those hardcore painkillers in?"
"I was awake long enough to see how relaxed she looked chatting away with you about basketball. And the look she gave you when she said 'pleased to meet you Kevin', bro I'll put it this way, she doesn't NOT like you"
"Man, just eat some pizza" Adam just shrugged and started in on a slice. Kevin wouldn't lie. Shauna was beautiful and seemed extremely easy to talk to. He hadn't had the best of luck in the dating department and as of late had committed most of his free time to working on his building and tending to his relationship with his father.
The two of them sat and caught up for a few more hours. Kevin offering to help him on his last little walk before climbing into bed for the rest of the night.
As they walked side by side with Kevin pulling the IV pole Adam started to chuckle which turned into a slight grimace.
"What is it?"
"Nothing" He answered not wanting to reveal that he had noticed Shauna watching the two of them. If he was stuck without anything else to do he would at least work on his observation skills.
"Mhmm, keep shuffling"
As they made it back into his room Adam caught Kevin by surprise when he brought up the Beck's case.
"Kim tell you about Voight and Chapman coming by tomorrow?" He said as he relaxed against the pillows
"Yea, she mentioned it earlier. Listen man I know you and I didn't agree on the immunity thing and I'm sorry if it came off as me trying to dispute you with all you went through with this case"
"You don't have to be sorry. I appreciate your input. You've always been more level headed than me."
"You've grown up dawg, give yourself some credit. We each have blindspots. Yours is kids."
"Maybe, I don't know. What's your take on the kid?"
"I don't think you want to know" Kevin didn't want to be an influence on Adam's decision. But at the same time if his friend was genuinely asking he didn't want to disrespect him and ignore his question.
"Please Kev. I'm flailing here. I can tell Kim's not saying everything that went down yesterday. I don't think I can trust Voight and Chapman to give it to me straight. I just want a clearer picture of who this kid actually is. 'Cause I don't think I knew him after all. Or maybe I was just too blind to see. I know I'm not going to be able to shut down racism with one person but … I don't know; do you think he's capable of being helped?"
And if that weren't a loaded question. Kevin would never forget the look Callum gave him as Voight was searching him for any weapons. That look was one of hatred. "I'll give you my best 'both sides argument' alright? The kid looked at me with disdain. Now is that because I'm black or is it because I had just killed his grandfather? I don't know that answer, maybe it'll be in some of the transcripts you get to see tomorrow but that's where it's all at as it pertains to me." Kevin laid it out there.
"Thanks man, ugh I don't know what to do" Adam laid back and stared at the ceiling
"I'm not going to tell you what to do, no one can do that. But I will say I agree with Kim on this part: Don't let it eat you up anymore. You did your part man; and then some. You tried, you gave both a chance out of this mess. Listen to what they have to say tomorrow and then move on with your life. With your girl and your daughter."
"See, always the level headed one" He held out his left fist and Kevin understood returning the first bump. They spent the remainder of Kevin's allotted time watching the end of "Fast 5" and debating which movies in the franchise were better than others.
Eventually Shauna came back as the bearer of bad news, "I was able to buy you an extra hour but Kevin really has to go now."
"Be good brother. I'll hold it down upstairs, you worry about getting home"
"If he's as good as he was today they're saying they'd discharge him the morning after tomorrow."
"See Kev, look at me go. You guys should come over for dinner soon, for real though. Now that you've planned the menu with Mack she's going to be hounding us to follow through with it. Kid's worse than a google calendar"
"You get home and we'll be over" The two exchanged some modified version of their usual hug and Kevin made his way out.
"Good night Ms. Shauna"
"Night Kevin"
Adam just smiled at the two as he reached for the phone Kim had left for him. It was an old one that she had managed to get reactivated; it would have to suffice while his was evidence. He'd seen women bat their eyes at Kevin before. He had also seen Kevin try to work his 'game' as he liked to call it. These two had chemistry but he could tell Kevin was too afraid to do anything about it.
"Ok Adam, I'll leave you be. Get some rest, sounds like you had a busy day, and press that button if you need anything."
"I did but it was a really good day overall. I'm going to make a goodnight phone call to my girls and that'll do it for me"
"Sounds like plan"
He made sure to keep his phone call with Kim and Makayla quick. If he wasn't careful he'd stay on the line talking to Kim for hours. The problem with that was Makayla wouldn't go to bed if she were still on the phone and the whole point of them heading home late in the afternoon was to re-establish a routine with her. He knew in the coming weeks he'd get plenty of time with the both of them. He drifted off that night and as promised didn't give a moment's thought to the Beck's case.
