This is a one shot based on The Swift Boys and Me by Kody Keplinger.
It's based on when Nola went to the Country Kitchen with her Grandma Lucy and saw Sarah, Mr. Swift's girlfriend he left his family for. I just had an idea and decided to go through with it!
Hope you like it!
Also I don't own the book by any means!
When Sarah brought grandma Lucy's lemonade, she sat a huge glass of Dr. Pepper in front of me. "Here. Just tell her I got the order wrong."
"Thank you." I said. Since Grandma Lucy had went to the bathroom, I saw the chance that I'd never get once she came back, so I had to be quick. "You know, I think you might know my uncle. David Swift?"
She had a look of surprise and amazement. "You're David's niece? Oh my goodness, it's so lovely to meet you! Wait a second... That woman isn't his mother, is it?"
"No! That's my grandmother on my mama's side. Uh, Uncle David is related to me on my daddy's side."
"Oh, that's a relief." She sighed an extra loud sigh of relief. "I would not want her as my mother-in-law. No, thank you."
"Mother-in-law?" I was getting madder at Mr. Swift minute by minute. How could he leave his family for this...this... person?!
She started to blush. "Well, he hasn't proposed yet, but we are living together, so I figure it's bound to happen sometime soon." She had such a nice big cheery glow on her rose colored skin.
I could basically feel my heart plummeting 30 feet in my chest as she spoke those words. "Oh, but please don't mention this to your family or anything." She quickly added. "I haven't meet many of his family members yet, and like I said, he hasn't even proposed or anything yet. I shouldn't have even brought it up. I'm sorry. Anyway, I'm Sarah Clarke. Like I said before, it's so nice to meet you."
She seems like a nice person, but I'm not falling for it. "Yeah! It's nice to meet you too, homewrecker." I know I was being really rude, but knowing Mr. Swift for as long as I have, I have a darn good reason to be rude.
Her eyes narrowed to slits and she glared at me. "What did you just call me, little girl?"
"You heard what I said, Sarah. I bet you didn't know this one little fact about Uncle David."
"Like what?"
"Like the fact that he had a family before he met you. Three boys and a wife."
"Ok, and?" She was growing super defensive over Mr. Swift. "He can have a family and divorce the lady before he meet me."
"I literally mean that he left her for you! He left his kids! My best friends! He doesn't even care that his youngest son hasn't spoken a word since he left! You should really talk to him about this. See what he has to say. Because I know what I'm saying and every word I speak, is the truth." With that, I got up and left.
But when I turned back towards the Country Kitchen, I say Sarah run out the door and to her car. So I hopped on my bike and started after her car.
Sarah's POV:
I didn't want to believe what she had said, but deep down, I knew that it was true.
I knew that David was still at our, I mean, my house, so I got off work early and ran out to my car.
I booked it all the way home and pulled into my driveway and jumped out of the car. I walked up to the porch and stuck my key in lock.
I walked into the living room to see a surprised David sitting on the couch, eating cereal and watching tv. "Sarah, honey, what are you doing back so early?"
"Don't honey me, David Swift. I want you out of my house. Right now, go back to your family. I don't want to be that kind of woman."
His eyes widened in surprise. "How'd you know about them?"
"Your niece paid me a nice little visit at my job and I'm glad she did, because I would've never known that you left your family."
"I don't have a niece. I mean, I do, but she lives in Montana."
"All I know is that she looked about 12 with short, pretty blonde-brown hair."
"Nola." His voice was barely audible, as tears formed in his eyes. "It was Nola. She's my son's best friend. All of them. Especially little Kevin. Oh, God, what have I done?"
"David, just go to them. Be there for them, love them. And please forget about me. I want you to be there for your sons and your wife. Trust me, they need you. More than I do."
"Thank you, Sarah!" He said, as he bolted out the doorway and to his car and put in reverse and disappeared from view.
I felt happy, knowing I'd done the right thing.
David's POV:
I never sped so fast, but I wanted to get home. Home was with my wife and my three boys. Home was where Nola and her mom where at.
I silently thanked Nola as I pulled into the driveway of the duplex. Everything that happened, happened because of Nola. She'd do anything for Brian, Canaan, and Kevin. So would I.
When I saw that front door open and my beautiful wife walked out, I knew I was home. "David?!" A sob made its way pass her closed cherry lips. "Is that really you?"
"Yes, honey, it's me." She ran towards me, as I grabbed her into a huge hug.
"Mom? Are you okay?" Canaan appeared in the doorway, his mouth forming a perfect 'o'. "Dad?! Are you back for good?"
"Yes, son, I'm back. For good!" Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Nola, from her window, smiling at us. She the reason I'm back here. I'm grateful that Canaan has Nola as his best friend; she's the best friend they've ever had.
Canaan's POV: Epilogue
The next morning, when I woke up, I raced into the kitchen to see if yesterday wasn't just a dream and it was real.
And sure enough, my mom and my dad were sitting at the kitchen table, holding hands and staring into each other's eyes.
Finally, everything's back to normal, and Kevin's talking again, and Brian's back at home. It was like dad had never even left.
But I need to go to see Nola to tell her all that's happened. I put on my Converse sneakers and headed for our door. I opened it and just took one, short stride over to Nola's side of the duplex. I knocked, barely being able to contain my excitement.
The door opened and Nola stood in front of me, all smiles. "Nola, I've got some news for you!"
"What is it?" She asked, smiling at me.
"My dad's back! For good! He's back home!" I saw the joy that was clearly written all over her face; she was really, truly happy for me.
"I'm so glad that he's back! It'll be like he never left!" She had this certain sparkle in her eye, but I couldn't tell what is was for. Perhaps, I didn't even want to really know. All I'm happy about right now, is that I still have my dad and I still have my best friend, Fionnula "Nola" Sutton.
