A/N: This is a story I've had rolling through my head for a long time, in Adventure 01, they talk about a group of chosen children who came before the Tai's group. We never really get any other context for what they did or who they faced, so I thought that I would put my ideas to paper. I hope you enjoy it.
William got out of the car and turned around. He grabbed his bag out of the backseat and looked towards the front of the car, where his foster father, Mr. Whitter sat in the driver's seat upper body angled towards him "Have a good time William"
"Yeah, thanks for the ride" Will watched Mr. Whitter's scrunch into concern but he didn't say anything. They stared at each other for another few minutes before William threw up his hand in what he could only think was an awkward wave and turned from the car and ran towards the front door of the school.
He was here in the middle of July for a summer camp deal, where the incoming most of the freshmen class would go off and camp for a few weeks, get to know one another, and try to make new friends. William hadn't wanted to go, but it had seemed better than sitting in that damn foster home for the rest of the summer, so he decided to try to make the best out of it.
The front door to the high school revealed a teacher he didn't recognize, who ushered him towards the gym just behind her. Inside the gym stood several people he didn't recognize. He felt the all too familiar fear of being alone inside of a crowd. He stayed on the edges and scanned the crowd for anyone from his old middle school, he didn't see anyone.
Regret and nervousness settled into the bottom of his stomach, and he let out an uneasy breath. He knew that there had to be somebody he knew here, he just had to keep looking, but that was going to be difficult. He took another look around and locked eyes with a girl with black hair, she looked at him and smiled. He didn't know what to make of that, why was a girl smiling at him? He sent her a small smile, hoped that he didn't come off as some weirdo.
A slap on his back pulled him from that question and he turned around to finally see someone he knew, Arthur Gray, stood behind him smiling. "Will, glad to see you"
Will forgot about the girl and replied with a smile "Hi Arthur, did you just get here?"
Arthur shook his head "Yeah, Dad just dropped me off" Arthur's eyes hardened for a moment and lowered his voice as he said, "I know you said that you were coming at the end of last year, but with everything that happened…." His voice trailed off.
Will closed his eyes, he wished that Arthur hadn't brought it up, but the two of them hadn't spoken since the funeral, so instead he opened his eyes, forced a small smile, and said "Yeah, this seemed better than the alternative so" he trailed off his own sentence. Arthur nodded his head in understanding, and Will knew that the understood better than most. With the lull in the conversation, William saw a chance to change what they were talking about "So, how's your summer been so far?"
Arthur smiled and began regaling him with one of his fishing stories, and Will was relived to hear it. Arthur was generally a good storyteller, but this also meant that he had been able to change the conversation. By the end of the story nearly two hundred kids had filled the gym, and Will learned that Arthur had caught the two fish the last time he had gone out.
"Attention everyone!" the teacher from before, the one who had showed him to way to the gym, yelled from the front doors. She tapped her microphone a few times as she waited for the kids to quiet down. When all of them finally did she continued "The busses have just arrived, groups will be assigned when we arrive at the camp" she held up her hands "Make five lines and then we will get you on the bus!"
It took what seemed like hours to get everyone situated on the busses, for roll to be called and then for the standard rules to be explained, things like don't stand up, stay in your seats, that sort of thing. They were finally on the road though, and the expansive city had given way to the rural and forested region just outside of their city. The ride didn't take very long, and luckily, he had Arthur there to hang out with. They spent the time talking about the baseball season, and their upcoming school year.
The bussed pulled off of the highway, and the next thing that William knew, they had arrived at the camp. Pleasant Hills Camping, as the large sign in the archway that they had passed under, looked nice enough, although it was just a camping spot in a wooded area, so probably just like any other area like this. They shuffled out of the busses and stood in the large clearing around in the center of the woods.
The same teacher had started speaking again "Before we get into our groups, lets go over some rules" she held up her hand, and as she started going through rules, she held a up a finger "No climbing the trees, No…."
Will tried to pay attention to her, but he felt his mind wonder, like it usually did when he was forced to listen to something. Instead, he went back to thinking about what would happen if he got placed in a group with people he didn't know, would he just clam up and not interact with the others for the whole time? That would certainly make a bad impression on people going into high school. He would have to make friends with new people, but that had always been difficult for him to do and caused him a lot of anxiety.
The teacher finished the rule list, he hoped that Arthur was paying attention, because he would need to be filled in, and the teachers started to put them in their groups.
He was one of the first to be called, and was put into group C. He waited as more and more people joined him, two girls who looked a lot like, William assumed them to be twins, a blonde-haired boy was the next one, another girl with light red hair, a boy with thin hair. His worry about making friends with these people returned and has much as he willed it to go away, it didn't. Finally, Arthur came up to the group. Relief flowed through Will as he realized that Arthur and he would be in the same group, he wouldn't be alone with strangers at least. The last member to join their group was the same black-haired girl who had smiled at him back in the gym.
One of the other teachers yelled from the center of the circle that the groups had made "Okay, you have one hour to go and set up your camps! You should take this time to set up your tents and get to know one another!" he looked at his watch "Check back here in one hour!"
"Looks like our camping spot a bit in that way" Arthur said pointing towards the sign point with Group C this way printed on the side. They walked without talking, and soon found themselves in another clearing, this one much smaller than the previous one. Without any real conversation they reformed into a circle.
The eight of them stood around waiting for someone to say something. A few seconds turned into a minute of them just staring at each other. Arthur chuckled to his right and said, "Well maybe we should go around and introduce ourselves?" That got a few nods from the others, so Arthur went first "I'm Arthur Gray, I'm fourteen and am looking forwards to these next few weeks, I like the outdoors and particularly enjoy fishing"
Arthur slapped Will on his shoulder, his own special way of indicating that he wanted Will to go next. Will was more than happy to, he would rather have something like this done first instead of having to wait on it "I'm William Grant, also fourteen, and I enjoy reading and" his mind went blank on what next to say, so instead cleared his throat and said "and things like that"
The blonde hair boy went next "Maxwell Watts, but you guys can just call me Max, I just turned fifteen and I like hanging out with my friends and am hoping to get noticed for the football team next year"
"Galen Hopkins" the next kid said, this one being the dark-haired boy "fourteen, and I'm also hoping to get to join next year's football team"
Next came the two twins "I'm Sarah Tosh and this is Miranda, my sister" the first girl said.
"Yes" the other one said "Were twins"
The red-haired girl went next "I'm Diane Stone, I don't really have any hobbies, I just go to school and things like that"
The last one was the black-haired girl from the gym "I'm Eveline, I'm fourteen and enjoy reading and cooking"
With that introduction had come to and end. Arthur looked happy with himself, and the group further split between the boys and the girls and unloaded the supplies and began to set up the tent. Will's earlier nervousness gave way as he had something to do. He had just set the bag that the tent came in down when he felt something cold and wet on his hand.
He looked up towards the sky and didn't see a cloud or anything, so it couldn't have been rain or anything like that. He must have imagined it, so he turned back towards the tent when he heard Maxwell let out a yell "Snow? In July?"
Will turned around and stood back up, the children had gathered around Maxwell. "You said that it was snow?" Miranda was asking him by the time that Will had gotten to the group.
Maxwell nodded his head vigorously "Yes it was!" he held out his hand when another snowflake hit his hand "You see!"
"Weird" Galen said standing over Max's shoulder to get a better look.
"How does that even make sense?" Will found himself asking despite himself "It's July"
"Probably just some freak weather accident or something" Arthur was saying "If anything this means that…." He trailed off and then said, "What the hell?" Will followed his gaze towards the woods, where water was rushing towards them.
He heard the others start screaming but didn't feel or hear anything come out of his. The water hit him and threw him down, knocking the air out of him and taking him along with the water. He vaguely saw the others in a similar way. He didn't remember losing consciences, all he knew was that one moment he was awake and the next, he wasn't.
Evelyn woke with a pounding headache. She didn't immediately open her eyes, and instead focused on trying to will the headache to go away. When it didn't, she slowly opened her eyes to reveal a blue sky. She slowly pulled herself up into a sitting position and tried to remember what had happened.
They had gotten into groups, had introduced themselves, got to setting up camp, and then water had flooded in and rushed them? That couldn't be right, there wasn't a lake or anything near where they were camped, and it had hadn't rained in at least a week! She rubbed her eyes and began to start to get up when something small hit her on her chest and forced her back to the ground. She looked down to where the thing had taken a seat on her stomach. A blue and white ball, with a helmet with two horns protruding from it sat looking at her with big eyes.
Realistically she knew she should be afraid, she knew that this was something that should cause her a lot of fear but looking at the little guy made her feel like she didn't need to be afraid at all. "What are you?"
It blinked and replied "I'm Kapurimon! I'm you partner!"
A partner? Why would she need a partner, and why would it be this thing laying on her? "I don't understand, what do you mean you're my partner?" she then added as an afterthought "and can I get up please?"
The thing, no Kapurimon eyes grew big before it said "Oh right, sorry" sheepishly.
It hopped off her and she stood and wiped the dirt off of her clothes. She looked around and took in her surroundings, she was in a forested clearing, but the trees were different here. Some of the trunks made loops or jutted out from the ground at angles that shouldn't be possible.
She stole a glance down at Kapurimon, who was sitting down and staring up at her with big brown eyes. What do you mean about being my partner?" she asked again.
"Well, you see" It started before it stopped and looked towards the tree line behind her. "Whose there?" it yelled towards it.
She turned around and was relieved to see another person coming out of the tree line into the clearing. She thought his name was William and following close behind him was a pink creature with two long floppy ears.
"Evelyn, right?" William asked as he approached her, she nodded her head in affirmation. He looked to her side at Kapurimon "I see I'm not the only one with these things following me"
"I'm not following you Will, were partners!" the pink ball demanded from his side.
Will nodded his head and replied "Yeah, sorry" he looked back to Evelyn "Evelyn, this is Koromon, Koromon, this is Evelyn" he made introductions.
She remembered that she hadn't introduced Kapurimon. So, she quickly did that. With introductions over she asked him "Do you have any idea where we are?"
He shook his head "I don't know, nothing makes a whole lot of sense, I mean, look at the trees" he gestured back towards the woods. "The weird thing is, is that I'm not freaked out by Koromon, I mean I feel like I should be, but I'm just not"
"I feel the same way with Kapurimon" she admitted. Something popped into her mind, and she said "If you and I are here, then the others from the group must be nearby"
Will's eyes grew wide and started nodding his head "Yeah that's a good point, I hadn't considered that"
"Maybe we should go and look for them?" she suggested.
"I agree I know the others are here as well" Kapurimon added.
"The others?" Will asked when a yell came over them.
"HEY GUYS" Evelyn turned towards the yell to see three others emerging from the woods. She recognized the three of them. The twins, Sarah and Miranda were carrying two other creatures. The boy walking with them she was pretty sure was the one that was with Will.
"Arthur!" Will yelled and waved his hands towards them.
They met in the middle of the clearing and quickly introduced each other with their new things with them. Miranda had Puwamon, Sarah was carrying Fufumon, and Arthur was followed closely behind by Tsunomon.
They agreed that they had to find the others, and hope that they could then find the rest of their group. "You never answered my question" she told Kapurimon as they walked through the thick forest "Why do you mean that were partners?" she of course understood what the word meant but needed to know what that meant between her and Kapurimon.
Kapurimon didn't say anything, and for a moment they were in silence "It means that you and I are going to work together, and that were connected!" she didn't know how to feel about that, but something in her gut told her that Kapurimon was telling the truth, and that it wouldn't do anything to hurt her.
They found Diane Stone and Pagumom, and then they found the final two, Galen and Maxwell with their respective partners, Bukamon and Yaamon. The group found another clearing not too far from where she had woken up and reformed their circle that they had been in when they had been washed away.
"We need to find a way to get in contact with our teachers or our parents" Maxwell was saying, with Yaamon underneath his shoulder like he was holding a football. Something lit in his eyes and his free hand reached into his pocket and pulled out a phone, he flipped it open and silently pressed a few buttons and held it up to his ear. A half minute passed by before he dropped it from his ear and angrily said "I'm not even getting through"
Miranda pulled out her own phone and repeated the same process "No ringing here either" she looked downcast and said, "What if were not even in America anymore?"
Galen scoffed "What? The flood washed us away a few thousand miles to Canada or Mexico?" he shook his head "No way"
"Well how do you explain everything going on?" Sarah demanded, apparently not liking the tone Galen had used. Evelyn wished that they could all just get along.
"Well, we can't have done that, I mean I wasn't even wet when I woke up!" Galen said with growing exasperation in his voice.
"Well arguing like this isn't going to get us anywhere" Diane added with a shake of her head. She had set Pagumon down and had crossed her arms. Taking charge she asked "Do we know which way where we got off the busses is?"
Evelyn was happy that Diane was taking charge, they needed somebody to, but unfortunately, she didn't know how to get back, even if that would work. "I don't remember" she answered.
None of the others did as well, leaving them back in the same spot that they had been in a few moments earlier.
Galen looked like he was going to say something when a loud roar came over group. Evelyn turned around and saw something charging out of the woods.
She heard William say in an incredulous voice "Is that a moving pile of poop?"
It threw something that fell just short of them "By the smell" Arthur said as he walked a bit further to get a better look "its throwing poop at us"
"It's a Sukamon!" Tsunomon screeched "It's a champion level! We have to run"
The children didn't need any more encouragement, and they took off. Evelyn struggled to see who all was in front of them, she didn't want to leave anybody behind. Maxwell had taken the lead in leading them away from the monster, but based on the sound of poop being flung, it was gaining on them.
They started to go uphill, which wasn't noticeable at first, but she began to feel the burn in her lungs and the heaviness of her legs. She cursed her unathleticness and felt her slowing down. Her foot got tangled up what she thought was a unearthed root of one of the trees, and she felt herself falling down. Kapurimon fell out of her hands as well but was far more graceful in that it landed on it's bottom.
In between pants she heard someone yell "Evelyn!" and the somebody sliding to a stop. A pair of hands grabbed her arms and pulled her up. she looked to see a tired and panting Will saying "Come on, we have to go"
Another shot of poop landed on the tree whose root had tripped her, and she watched in horror "It's eating the tree!" she said and then went back to panting.
"Yeah, which is why we need to get moving!" Will yelled once again.
"Frothy Spit" she heard Kapurimon yell
"Poison Bubbles" Koromon also yelled at the same time.
Turning to look at their partners, she watched in amazement as Kapurimon spit green spit and Koromon blew green tinted bubbles at the creature. Both attacks moved pretty fast and hit Sukamon. It stopped it's advance and wiped the spit off with it's disgusting looking hands.
"Well, that didn't do much" Koromon stated matter-of-factly.
"We knew it wouldn't" Kapurimon said.
"They can attack? Can we fight back?" Will said with bewilderment clear in his voice.
Evelyn shook her head and said "We have to get back to the others Will" Evelyn rushed forward and picked up Kapurimon, as did Will, when she saw Sukamon begin to come forward again. They started back up the hill before running into the others coming back down.
Arthur was the first to say something "We saw that you guys weren't with us" he said to the both as he watched behind them, probably looking for where Sukamon was.
In between his pants, Will was saying "Arthur…. they" gesturing to Koromon and Kapurimon in his and her hands "can ….. fight back!"
Maxwell pushed his way to the front, apparently, he wasn't any worse for wear from the running "You say they can fight back?"
Will nodded his head and looked down at Koromon "Yeah, think you can do that again Koromon?"
"You bet Will!" Koromon responded with enthusiasm.
"But the attacks didn't do much else than slow him down!" Evelyn reminded the both of them. Will sighed but didn't look undeterred.
Diane offered up a suggestion "If all of our partners attacked it at once, maybe it would do more?"
Pagumon, who sat cradled in her arms said, "I am ready for anything Diane!"
"Me too Max!" Yaamon yelled from the ground.
All of the other's partners showed the same bravado, and Evelyn really hoped it wasn't misplaced. She turned back to Kapurimon, who seemed to be waiting for her reply "Let's do it Kapurimon!" She exclaimed.
He smiled and hopped out of her arms and into the line of their partners separating the children from Sukamon. It was advancing up the hill now, still flinging poop at them, but missing. Evelyn felt nervous and stole a glance at her companions. Arthur's face wore a frown but didn't show any other emotion, Will wore a look of pure determination and she was surprised to see anger in his eyes. The others looked uncertain but also determined. She steeled herself as Sukamon got closer and closer.
"Bubble Breath!"
"Frothy Spit!"
"Froth Bubbles!" Bukamon roared.
"Poison Bubbles!" Pagumon screamed, sending out the same green tinted bubbles towards Sukamon.
"Paint Splash!" Yaamon then spit dark ink out of its mouth.
"Little Iron Spikes!" Fufumon gritted its teeth, revealing several small iron spikes protruding from its mouth.
"Fluffy Feather!" Puwumon jumped into the air and showed Sukamon in what she thought was sticky feathers.
All of the attacks struck Sukamon at the same time, and it stopped moving. Tsunomon then struck, burying its spiky horn into the Sukamon. Sukamon roared in pain for a moment before it grabbed ahold of Tsunomon and threw him towards the children.
Evelyn heard Arthur grunt in what sounded like pain as Tsunomon smashed into the tree next to him, and she watched as Arthur rushed forward and grabbed ahold of him "Tsunomon are you okay?" he was asking, with obvious concern in his voice.
"Just give me a second Arthur, I'll be back in the fight before you know it!" Tsunomon said weakly.
"We have to run!" She heard Galen say from behind her, she turned to see him, Sarah and Miranda slowly moving backwards.
"No, if we run, we'll just have to fight him somewhere else!" Will said quickly, with an anger in his voice that she hadn't heard yet in the short time she had known him.
"I agree with Will, we need to end this now, rather than just exhausting ourselves by running away" Max said.
Sarah must have steeled herself and stepped forward "Alright then, what's the plan?"
Everyone just kinda stared at each other for a second, before the poop being slung from the Sukamon landed just behind Evelyn. She turned around to look at the battle, the line had been broken and their partners were flinging attacks at the Sukamon while it slung poop and slung off the attacks.
Evelyn didn't like their odds, but they needed to win. She felt a burning in her hand, no not in her hand, on it, turning her palm over revealed a golden light forming into a small rectangular device, looking almost like a very tiny phone. The screen in the middle of the plastic grew blight and then she heard Kapurimon yell out "Kapurimon digivolve to… Kotemon!"
Kotemon looked to Evelyn like Kapurimon had grown a body and was wearing a blue cloak. He seemed stronger as well, like he could fight anything. She heard the other's digivolving as well.
"Koromon digivolve to Agumon!"
"Tusnomon digivolve to Elecmon!"
"Bukamon digivolve to Betamon!"
"Yaamon digivolve to Impmon!"
"Puwumon digivolve to Pinamon!"
"Fufumon digivolve to Hackmon!"
"Pagumon digivolve to Gazimon!"
All of their partner's had changed, Koromon had become a dark orange dinosaur, Tsunomon was a red and blue creature with nine tails, Bukamon was now a green and white fish, Pagumon was now a grey colored animal that resembled a large squirl, Yaamon was now looked like a black and white imp, fitting for the name. Puwumon was now a seahorse looking creature, and Fufumon had become a dragon like creature.
Their partners surrounded the Sukamon, who had stopped in what looked like confusion to Evelyn. "They've changed" she breathed out, and then watched as they all charged.
Agumon let out several fire balls from his mouth, Elecmon and Betamon both unleashed a torrent of lightning onto Sukamon, and as the two other attacks smashed into the monster, Hackmon charged scratching it up with it's claws.
The Sukamon fell, no longer moving forwards, all of their partners moved forward. It began to cower as they did so. Agumon was the first to get to it, and Evelyn saw him reel back, fire in his mouth, then she turned back to the cowering monster, they couldn't just kill it could they?
"Wait!" she screamed, the others stopped and Agumon visibly forced his flames down.
Arthur came to her side "Why?"
"It's obviously beaten, we can't just kill it can we?" she said. "If we kill it while it's weak, doesn't that make us just the same as it?" she looked around for any support for the group.
"Evelyn's right" Miranda said emerging from behind Maxwell, with Diane and Sarah both nodding their heads in agreement.
Max and Galen didn't look convinced "What if it decides to come back after us?" Max asked with his arms crossed.
"I highly doubt it would" Will said for the first time since the battle had ended. All eyes turned on him, which he must not have been expecting as he tensed up "I mean, we already beat him once right? He must know we will just do it again"
Arthur nodded his head "I suppose that makes some sense" he turned back towards their partners "Lets get going guys, just leave him"
Their partners seemed surprised, but didn't argue, and they slowly backed away, but not before Agumon leaned in and whispered something to Sukamon that Evelyn couldn't hear. After Agumon returned to the group, the Sukamon jumped up and scurried off back in the direction where it came.
"Okay, now that that's over, can we get some explanation for what's going on?" Sarah said.
Arthur sat down on the ground, looking happily down on his small fire he had managed to get lit. Will sat to his left taking a sip out of his water bottle. "It's been a crazy day hasn't it" Will said as he put the lid back on the plastic bottle.
It certainly had been. After their battle with Sukamon, they had traveled what Arthur guessed about another mile before deciding to set up camp for the day, unfortunately the flood had destroyed all of their gear, which meant that they were restricted the bookbags on their persons, which had some emergency food rations and water bottles. As the moon had started to come up, several of the group had fallen asleep, leaving Arthur and Will alone on first watch.
Will's statement elicited a chuckle out of Arthur, Will, for all of his quietness, had a way of making ordinary statements like that at odd times. "It certainly has" he looked to his right where Elecmon sat curled on next to him and he couldn't help but smile. "Transported to another world, paired up with partner Digimon that can apparently evolve based on our feelings" he looked at Will "Shits crazy"
That got a good-natured chuckle out of Will, and Arthur was glad to hear one, Will had gone through a depressive episode at the start of the summer, but he seemed to be coming out of it. He turned back to the fire and added couple of more sticks.
The others laid a few feet away, sleeping on the ground. The moon hung in what Arthur would guess was its zenith of the night. Arthur wished that they had gotten more information out of their partner Digimon, all they could tell them was they were in the Digital World, that they had been waiting for them for a very long time, and not much else. "I just wish we had more information"
He felt Will shrug his shoulders "We have as much as we can get, maybe tomorrow we can get out of this forest and maybe to a high area to get a feel for the land?"
"That's a good idea" Arthur agreed, if they could get to high ground then they could figure out where they were and see if there was any water nearby.
A crunch of a tree branch had both him and Will standing up from the ground, looking towards the tree line. When Evelyn emerged from it, with Kotemon in tow, relief flowed through Arthur. At least they wouldn't have to fight yet another Digimon again.
Evelyn walked up to the other side of the fire and held her hands out, warming them. Nothing was said. They probably stood around the fire for five minutes before Evelyn said "Hey Will" Will wasn't expecting to be called out by name as his head shot up from where he had been staring into the fire "Thanks for stopping to help me up, I know you put yourself in danger"
Arthur had wondered how they got separated from the group, he had just thought that it was because that the two of them was just a bit slower, but with what Evelyn had said, it was because she had fallen.
Will shrugged his shoulders, probably in an attempt to lessen what he had done "I didn't even think" he admitted "I saw you trip and then I was stopped"
"Well still, thanks" Evelyn pressed on.
"It was nothing" Will replied awkwardly.
"I think we need to find higher ground in the morning" Arthur said, trying to get the conversation off of Will, who was looking more and more beet red with the blush that was forming on his cheeks. "Try to get the lay of the land, things like that"
Evelyn nodded her head in agreement "I think that's an excellent idea" she yawned into her hand "Wake me up when you two head to bed, I'll take the rest of the night"
"I intended to wake up one of the others, they have to part of this as well" Arthur said, he didn't really like it that he and Will had been forced to take first watch on their accord in the first place.
"In that case I'll wake them up when I need to get some sleep" and with that Evelyn turned and went towards where everyone was sleeping.
With her gone, Arthur turned to Will "What's got you so red?"
"Shut up Arthur" was all Will replied.
"No I don't think I will" Arthur said trying to come up with more jokes to make about Will.
