Steve walked into Eva's room. He was devastated, seeing her in that hospital bed. He stood by the door until she looked over at him. She smiled at him, but it was clouded over with an emotion he hated to see coloring her beautiful face.

"There you are," she said. "I was worried."

He walked in and sat in a chair next to the bed, saying, "You don't need to worry, sweetheart. How are you feeling?"

Eva tried to keep her tears in. "Scared. We know nothing about what is happening to me. What if-"

"We'll figure it out." He took her hand, his touch gentle. "You just rest and get better."

Trying not to break down, Eva keeps talking shop, but it isn't helping much. "Hank said they are working on an antidote, but it will take time."

"That's good." Steve hoped he sounded positive. "I'll have you back in my arms again."

The damn finally broke for Eva. "What if they don't synthesize it in time? I just got you back."

He kissed her head, blinking back his own tears. "Don't think like that. Everything will be fine."

Eva took a breath, trying to calm back down. "Bruce suggested a blood transfusion with either you or Bucky." She gripped Steve's hand, betraying her uncertainty. "But we don't know what that could do to me or how it would react with the poison."

Steve's head snapped up at that. He had only just told Eva that morning about Bucky and HYDRA, at least what Bucky said he was allowed to share. He had to console Eva, who burst into tears at the mere thought of what their friend had suffered. He didn't want to risk her too. But if it was the only way-

"Let's keep that as a last resort," he found himself saying.

She caressed his cheek, and said, "I agree. I'm just so scared, Stevie."

This time, he gave her a small smile. "We'll face this like we do everything. Together."

Eva returned his smile before pulling him into the bed with her. She wanted him to hold her, to make her feel safe. He didn't fight her, cradling her against him and playing with her hair until he felt her falling asleep. Then, he went to the kitchen to make himself a drink after he untangled himself from her without waking her. He may not be able to get drunk, but it did help to settle his nerves.
