Author's notes:
I am grateful for the people who took the time to read and review my story. Please feel free to read and review, the more the merrier. Since I am not familiar with Virginia, I made up the name of the park. I called it Freedom Park. I have rewritten this chapter several times and I finally think it is going in the direction I had planned in my head. Enjoy.
Chapter 4
John Western sat in the director's outer office. He had been told to report for an important meeting. He hoped it didn't have anything to do with Reid, but he wasn't willing to bet on it. The office door opened, and he was ushered in.
"Have a seat, we need to talk."
Rossi's House
Later that evening, John was sitting in Rossi's living room, whiskey in hand. He didn't think there was enough alcohol in this house for what he had to say, and he couldn't take a risk of anyone overhearing. "You might want one of these", he said holding up his glass.
"Maybe after. Right now I want a clear head. Good news or bad?"
"I was informed today that one of our agents went rogue and killed a couple of fellow agents. You want to take a guess who?"
"Reid? They think he set them up?"
"Not only set them up, but murdered them. Seems he was on a special assignment and then just disappeared. Two agents and a man were killed with his gun that was found at the scene and they want him found. That's all I know. The director doesn't want this to get out, he wants it handled in house. Makes the FBI look bad. "
" Murdered them? He's too smart to have left any clues, let alone a smoking gun, registered in his name, no less. Doesn't it seem convenient it was left behind? Who's bright idea was that?"
"Not sure. The director left it up to me to assign someone to find him. No one here knows him better than your team. You know how he thinks." He stood up and walked over to Rossi. "You don't want this turning into a blood bath if other agents find him first, someone who killed two of their own."
"Presumedly killed," Rossi corrected him.
"Presumedly killed. Your team has a good reputtation, which is the only reason I am considering this. We need him found and found quickly and hopefully quietly. Interested?"
It was 3 a.m. when his phone rang. He rolled over and looked at the clock. He answered with "This better be good."
FBI Headquarters
Rossi made it into the building by 4, telling the guard he couldn't sleep and decided to get an early start. He knocked quietly when he got to Garcia's door and waited for her to let him in.
JJ let him in and pointed to Sarah, sleeping on the couch. "Garcia got what you needed. She was upset, so I told her I would talk to you. I sent her home to get some rest."
"Good. So what's up?"
"Seems Reid was sent to get information on a terrorist group. They call themselves the White Knights. Evidently they have chapters in several states. They are connected to a couple of bombings, two assassinations, and at least 3 kidnappings. All three were later found dead. They are probably responsible for a whole lot more."
Rossi decided he needed to sit down for this.
"No one has been able to positively pin anything on them. Finally one of the Knights was wounded during an attack and was left for dead. He survived. Reid was sent in to profile him, try to get him to talk. He did. He reported that they were bringing him in, with a place and a time to meet up. When the agents arrived at the agreed upon checkpoint, no one was alive. Both of the agents were killed, along with the Knight, all with Reid's gun. Reid wasn't found. Now they're looking for him."
"This just keeps getting better and better. Remind me to thank him for leaving his gun behind, convenient don't you think? I want everyone in my office when they get here. I've already had it checked out. It's clean." He picked up the mysterious phone and took it with him.
After everyone reported to Rossi's office, JJ told them what she knew. "They think it was the Knights, to either get their man back or to keep him from talking, and they think Reid was in on it. From his message, it sounds like he was caught, but managed to escape. The Knights must know who he is and are still hunting him. He probably figured out by now that there is a mole who is passing on classified information."
"Could there be more than one?" Luke asked.
"God I hope not." Emily replied. " One is hard enough to find."
Rossi started pacing. "We have to find out who the mole is. Until we do, our hands are tied and we can't safely bring him in."
"What about Sarah?" Luke asked.
"They must think she can lead them to Reid. Considering how my house looks, they are getting desperate to find him. Since we can't contact him, we just have to wait til he contacts us."
"I just hope he can hold out. He's done good so far, but it won't last forever." Emily reminded everyone.
"He's a smart kid." Rossi added. "I just hope he's smart enough. Tell Garcia she did a great job. I'm going to see if I can get started on our hunt. Everyone back to your duties and remember, our mole might just be in our own back yard."
Motel
Reid woke up when he heard the phone ringing. He flipped it open, then shut it immediately. It began to ring again. And again. Finally he decided to answer it.
"Yes?"
"You're not Margaret, where's Margaret? I want to speak to Margaret."
"She's not here right now. Maybe you can call back later?"
"Who's this? Are you Alex, her grandson?"
"I'll tell Margaret you called when she gets back. Good bye." he closed the phone and it hung up.
The woman on the other end of the line was talking to a dead phone. "But you didn't even get my name."
He looked at the clock next to the bed. 9:30. Then he glanced out the window, as his groggy mind couldn't decide if it was am. or pm. It was am.
Then he smiled, as it occurred to him he was still alive. But if he wanted to stay that way, he was going to need some help. He started to dial the phone.
Rossi jumped when the phone rang. It was the last thing he expected. He carefully picked it up and answered.
"This is Rossi."
"Do you know who this is? Is it safe to talk?"
Rossi wanted to jump into the phone and ask a million questions, but he did his best to stay calm. He remembered his door was open. "Hi mom, how's it going? I know I haven't called in a long time and I'm sorry." He paused just a second. "No, I don't remember what color it is." He started walking to Emily's office.
"OK, then just listen. I'm ok. I didn't do anything. But I saw it all. I need some money. I used the last I had yesterday. I stole this phone - now I'm a thief - so it can't be traced back to me. Obviously it hasn't been shut off yet."
" I think I can drop by around 1 o'clock today. Is that okay? Is Aunt Alma still living near Freedom Park? She always said she liked that angel statue."
"Freedom Park, around one, by the angel statue. Got it."
After taking Prentiss back to his office, Rossi explained everything to her. "We'll need some sandwiches in plain paper bags. We'll just be two people eating lunch in the park."
"How did he sound? Is he okay? Garcia will never forgive me if I don't ask. 'Did he say anything?"
'Let's see. He sounded tired. He asked if it was clear to talk. He said he's okay, but he ran out of money and he stole the phone he called from. Now he thinks he's gone from agent to thief."
"At least he's a live thief." As they walked towards the door, she started asking, "What kind of sandwiches should we get?"
Freedom Park
Spencer tried to hide his identity as much as possible. He wore old clothes he had bought the day before at a second hand store and a wool hat over his hair. He walked to the park and found a spot where he could watch the angel statue and not attract attention to himself. He sat and waited. Eventually, he saw 2 people, a man and a woman, sit on the bench and take out a couple of brown bags. He knew right away who they were and he wanted to run over and hug them both, but he couldn't take a chance of being exposed. So he waited. They ate and talked and finally they set the bags aside on the bench. It looked like they were just too lazy to throw them away. Then, they walked away. Spencer waited until they couldn't be seen, to see if they were being followed. When he thought it was clear, he went over and stuffed both bags into his hoodie. He waited until he was alone in his room. He opened one of the bags and there were extra sandwiches in it. Then he opened the other bag, there was money in it, and a note. "I know it's not enough, but I hope this will help. We are working on bringing you home. Be safe. We all miss you.
He grinned when he read the last part. "I miss you too."
Being the deputy director does come with some perks. Asking for certain files is one of them. Right now he was reading a report by Spencer Reid in connection with his latest assignment. "After spending time with the suspect, I have convinced him that it would be in his best interest to give up any information he has on the White Knights. He gave me a few names already and says he can give us names of the leadership and who was responsible for the kidnappings and killings in exchange for certain protections and immunity." He paused, put the report back into the file, placed it in his briefcase and walked out.
Later that evening, the team and John sat in the back of an Italian restaurant. They still had to be careful about bugs being planted in anyone's house.
After everyone had ordered, and the waitress left, John shared what he had found out, and Rossi did the same.
"Now we know why, we just need to find out who," JJ said. "I mean we know who, we just need to know which one is the mole."
"I hate to keep bringing this up, but is it possible there is more than one mole?" Luke asked John.
"Our people are carefully screened and background checks are performed on everyone, so I wouldn't think so," he answered. "It's hard enough to sneak in one, let alone two."
"We need a plan to expose the mole. And I have an idea how," Emily said with a smirk. They all listened carefully, adding and tweaking, until all agreed. They were going to send Spencer to one address, but leak out a different address. Then they would arrest anyone who showed up at the wrong address.
That night Reid called again and a plan was put into motion to bring him home.
FBI Headquarters
The next morning, Garcia came running out of the elevator. She was out of breath when she got to the BAU desks. She was panting so hard, she had to catch her breath.
"Garcia, what's going on? "JJ asked
"(pant) Him! I found Him (pant, pant)."
"Who!?"
"Reid - " She put her hand over her mouth. "I'm sorry, "
"Alright, everyone in my office," Emily Prentiss ordered. And they all raced up the stairs and shut the door.
"How long should we stay here before someone gets suspicious?" JJ asked.
"Well we're having an important meeting. Try to keep an eye out and see if we are drawing anyone's attention." After 10 minutes Emily opened the door and as the team was leaving, she said, "OK everyone knows what to do, let's get to work. Garcia get me that address as soon as possible."
"I'll have it for you shortly. I can't believe he's-" She stopped and covered her mouth. "Sorry. I'll bring it up to you personally." And she walked away, a big smile on her face.
