Tying Ties
"Marry me."
"I already am-"
"I mean right now."
"Sasuke."
Onyx met Opal as the two stood opposite of one another. A staring contest with higher stakes than normal. Loser would have to concede and he was no loser.
"You are not getting out of this dinner."
"Hn."
He didn't want to go. What was the point of an engagement party when everyone already knew they were engaged? He turned to the vanity mirror and could see his fiancé's reflection behind him. He couldn't lie, she looked stunning in her white dress. It was a simple knee-length dress, perfect for the breezy summer afternoon they were preparing for. It made him wonder what gown she would wear for their actual wedding day. Their wedding day. He blinked.
"This is important to me."
Fuck. She always knew what buttons to press without being too forceful. Without being too passive. It was one of the things he loved about her.
"Hn."
At his reply, a small smile played at the corner of her lips. She followed him the rest of the way into the bathroom, her smile widening as she watched him fiddle with his tie.
"You know you don't have to wear a tie."
"My mother would try to kill me if I didn't."
"I think my father would try to help."
Sasuke rolled his eyes. Hiashi Hyuuga would never forgive him for corrupting his 'little girl'. All that was wrong with the world began when he took his first breath. Too bad for him, Hinata seemed to think otherwise. As crazy as it was she saw something good in him, even when he couldn't see it himself. Another reason to love her.
"Here, let me help you."
She gently pushed away his inept hands and untied the monstrosity he'd been working on. Nimble fingers readjusted the length of the tie around his neck before proceeding to cross one end over the other. It was as if she'd done this a thousand times before.
"Neji used to have trouble with his ties as well." She said as if she'd heard his thoughts.
She was scary in that way. She knew what others needed before they did, what they thought as they were thinking it. It was the kind of consideration and tact he knew he lacked but Hinata didn't mind. He looked away as she finished up his tie. He was getting too soft these days. She was making him soft.
"There. Don't you look handsome?"
"Hn."
At that moment, the bathroom was filled with the sound of ringing as Hinata's phone went off in her dress pocket. She quickly answered and despite the phone not being on speaker he knew who had called. Sakura had a distinct shrillness in her voice on the phone- especially when she was stressed out. She had been calling Hinata multiple times a day ever since they got engaged. As maid of honor that was to be expected right?
"The guests are starting to arrive but the caterer still isn't ready."
"That's fine Sakura, meal service shouldn't be for another two hours."
"I know but they could at least start bringing out hors d'oeuvres. Thank goodness the open bar is ready to go." Sakura tsked. Sasuke could already imagine her disapproving glare through the phone. "Anyway, we certainly won't be using them for the bridal shower."
"B-bridal shower?"
"Yes silly. We still need to throw time on our calendar to organize the bridal shower and the bachelorette party. I'm thinking Vegas!"
"Sakura, I…I don't know about that-"
"Oh and you should also start thinking about the brunch for after the wedding. I have a connection that knows a really great restaurant owner that specializes in hosting large groups."
"Sakura-"
"Finally! There's the caterer now! Gotta go!"
Sasuke watched as Hinata sighed and slowly shook her head. She only had a moment of reprieve before her phone went off again notifying her of an email. He glanced over her shoulder as she opened it to find the quote for the flowers that would be used for the ceremony and reception. Seeing all of the line items and zeros sent a chill down his spine. Sure Hiashi was footing the bill for this entire affair but that didn't mean he wouldn't give them an earful about the cost.
As if on cue Hinata's phone rang again, this time her father's name was flashing across the top. His own phone went off in the other room. Both ringtones filled the air, competing with one another to see which one would win.
Onyx met Opal once again but this time instead of being at odds there was understanding. This time it was Hinata that blinked. She then smoothed out an imaginary wrinkle on his tie before sheepishly looking up at him.
"What time does the courthouse close?"
