"Seeing her again, reminded me just how lucky I am, that I waited until I met" he grabs her hands "the woman I was meant to be with"
She smiles and they kiss
Later in the middle of the night, they're both laying in bed, neither of them can sleep.
Julia looks over at him, "you awake, William?"
"Yes"
She looks over at the baby monitor, "at least one of us is asleep," and places the monitor back on the nightstand and turns back to him, "what's on your mind?"
He looks at her, "you might think it's silly"
"William, it's me. You talked to me about anything, long before we were together and married"
He sits up, as he rubs his forehead, "what I am about to tell you, happened to me at the lumber camp."
"Ok, was it before or after the murder?"
"It was after."
"Ok, go on"
"After what happened everyone went their ways, except I stayed behind at the camp"
"You didn't leave or offered any jobs?"
"I was offered a job, but I had a sense it was too dangerous. And I'm glad I decided on to go cause there was an incident 2 weeks later and 5 men died."
She looked at him, without saying a word.
"Anyway, this was during the summer, it was a hot day, and we didn't have to work, so we all went down to the lake for the day."
"You didn't go"
"I did. But everyone got drunk, and dared these 2 young men, who were afraid of heights, to climb this high tree"
"If they didn't, they were considered cowards?"
"Yes. So, the men did and they went quite high. As they continued climbing, I noticed the change in the wind and temperature. I looked to my right and saw storm clouds and heard thunder. I yelled to the men to get down. But they froze when they saw the storm clouds."
"You risked your life for them, didn't you?"
He nodded, "I climbed up the tree, and I saw a flash of lightning, a meter from the tree, and felt the heat and static from it. As I continued climbing, I reached one of the men, and guided him down unharmed. But the other one, who was still a 2 feet up, got his foot stuck in the branches. So, I kept climbing and reassured he was going to be fine. When it began pouring rain, as I finally reached him, and I wiggled his foot out of the branches. I told him to breathe, remain calm and just climb and he got down safely. But as for me, I was still 8-10 feet up the tree, the wind was blowing crazy, and the rain in my face, I slipped 2 feet down the tree, but grabbed a branch. I stayed like that for 2 minutes, with the some of the men calling out to me to hurry up, while the other men ran for shelter. Anyway, I was still 6-7 feet up still the tree, when I was about to make a move, and finish climbing, when a lightning strike hit the tree and all I remember is letting go and I woke up on the ground. I thought I was dead, because I thought I saw an angel. It told me, William, you will be alright, just hang on and wait."
He smiles and looks at her, "the angel looked like you, Julia"
She smiled, "what happened after that?"
"The next thing, I remember is I woke up in the infirmary 3 days later, where the caregiver informed me, the men I saved, were still shaken up but would be fine. Then the caregiver asked me if I have considered taking a job as a constable. I never considered it, I told him, and he gave me his card and told me about a job in Toronto and to think about it."
"Then you met me?" She said with a smile
He smiles and gives her a kiss, "after the day I met you, I looked in my journal and the way I described the angel, is the way you looked when I first saw you with your hair down. That's when I knew I met the woman for me"
She smiles at him as he and leans in closer to her, "I just had to wait" and kisses her again and fall asleep in each other's arms.
The End
