Simon Says Happy Birthday! (1/1)
"Uh uh. Where do you think you're going?" Carrie asked Angie as the young girl walked nonchalantly towards the door to the deck which was currently draped with a large purple sheet in order to obscure the view of party preparations.
"Cammie needs her favorite toy," the newly minted six year old said guilelessly. "It's in her casa."
"Didn't your mother give strict instructions that you can't go out on the deck until Grace is done setting up your party?"
Angie nodded. "But this isn't for me. It's for Cammie." She stuck out her bottom lip slightly. "She really wants her toy."
Carrie barked a laugh. "You're good kid. I'll give you that. But no going out on the deck until we get the ok."
"Is Angie in here?" Elizabeth asked as she bustled into the kitchen. "I ran out to the car to grab something for Grandma Ang and when I got back this one…" She tickled Angie's tummy. "Had disappeared. I had a feeling she was trying to sneak away and see her decorations."
"Catherine is a step ahead as always." Carrie chuckled. "That's why she posted a sentry in the kitchen."
"Let's go finish the book we were reading," Elizabeth coaxed. "I'm sure Grace will be ready for you to see very soon."
Angie took two careful steps onto the deck, eyes squeezed tightly closed. Her entire body was radiating excitement.
"When I say three, open your eyes," Grace said. "One. Two. Three!"
There was a beat of silence and then an excited squeal filled the air.
"Princesses! And goats!" Angie rushed towards a life sized cardboard cutout of Cinderella, one of six princesses who were placed around the perimeter of the deck. Each of them had a camo colored leash attached to their hands. On the other end of the leash was a 3-D goat balloon. Each goat had a camo bandana around their neck.
"Look, DJ! There's Ariel, and Belle, and Jasmine, and Merida, and Tiana! And they all have goats!"
"That's awesome!" DJ said as Angie took his hand and pulled him from one princess to the next to say hello.
Once that was accomplished she turned adoring eyes on Grace.
"This is the best party ever!" She aimed a slightly accusing look towards Catherine. "Mommy said you'd probably have to pick just one of the ideas we talked about but you did them all!"
Catherine smiled. "What can I say? Grace is the best party planner ever and she found a way to use all your ideas. Princesses, goats, camo, and … " She pointed to the dessert table off to the left, "Look at the special cookies she had made."
"They flippin'!" Angie bounced up and down with excitement. "Like me at the gym!"
"That's right." Grace beamed. "I couldn't leave out the flipping."
"You make the best parties ever!" Angie said as she threw her arms around her beloved cousin. "I love you."
"I love you," Grace said happily. "I'm so happy you like everything."
As each of her guests arrived Angie thanked them for coming to her party then took them around the deck pointing out all the decorations.
"She absolutely loves it," Steve said to Grace. "You knocked it out of the park again."
"I can't believe you found a way to work in all her ideas." Catherine smiled. "She was having such a hard time settling on one favorite. She went back and forth every day."
Steve nodded. "Sometimes every hour."
Catherine dropped an arm across Grace's shoulders. "I should have known you'd come up with the perfect way to include everything."
Grace beamed. "I wanted to show her that it's ok to be more than one thing. Pursue ALL of your interests. I actually got the inspiration thinking about her princess knight outfit from Disney World."
"Well, it was a brilliant plan and you brought it to life perfectly," Steve said.
"Who are you calling brilliant?" Danny asked as he joined the group. "Because if it's my daughter, then I must say I agree."
"She must get it from her mother," Steve teased.
"Very funny." Danny rolled his eyes. "But I too have had a brilliant idea. I've come up with the perfect plan for my birthday buddy adventure with Angie."
What is it?" Steve asked.
"I'm not telling you," Danny replied. "It's a surprise."
"I always tell you where we're taking Gracie for her birthday," Steve countered.
"That's because your adventures with Grace tend to need waivers signed and parental permission," Danny said. "My day out with Angie will require nothing of the sort. We are going to have a very fun day with absolutely no danger."
"I'm sure whatever you decided on will be perfect," Catherine said. "It always is."
Danny smirked. "I hope you still feel that way when Angie opens her present."
Once the party was in full swing with all of the usual friends and family in attendance, Angie took a little break to accept a Skype call.
"I'm so sorry we couldn't be there for your birthday this year," Mary said. "Joan's abuela had surgery on her wrist so we need to stay close by in case she needs any help."
"Is she ok?" Angie asked, her voice full of genuine concern.
"She'll be fine," Mary said. "She just needs some time to rest."
"She has a cast on," Joan said. "She let me sign it. And Mom said we can definitely come for a visit sometime before we go back to school."
Angie threw both arms in the air. "YAY!"
A sudden burst of loud laughter filled the air.
"It sounds like you're having a fun party," Mary said.
"Very, very fun!" Angie bubbled. "Ashae is here. And Kayla. And princesses and goats. We're gettin' ready to play Simon Says. Aunt Carrie is gonna be Simon."
Aaron chuckled. "That should be interesting."
"We'll let you go and have fun." Mary smiled. "We just wanted to tell you Happy Birthday and we can't wait to see you soon."
"See you soon!" Angie repeated.
Before the call could disconnect they heard Carrie yell, "Come on, McGarrett. Front and center. Simon says you're not getting out of this."
"Please get me a video of that game," Mary begged.
"You got it," Catherine promised. "Keep an eye on your inbox."
