A/N: I do not own Glee. This story takes place during S3 E5 and focuses on Mike's reaction to his dad not coming to see him in West Side Story. Hope you like it! Please review!
…
It was opening night of West Side Story and everyone was so excited.
Mike was excited but so nervous. He reserved two seats for his parents and he was anxious for their reaction. He was pacing around the choir room while his friends begged him to sit down and relax. Finally Tina got up, took his hand, and sat him down and sat on his lap. She was determined to calm his nerves and distract him. She started kissing him which led to a full on makeout session. Everyone was thankful Mike was finally sitting, but after awhile they started joking for the couple to get a room. Tina and Mike broke apart with embarrassed smiles.
Mr. Schue walked in clapping his hands "alright guys! Let's do this!". Everyone cheered and headed to the auditorium. Mike and Tina held hands the whole way and when they got there Tina looked at Mike.
"You're going to be great" Tina said smiling at him.
"You are too" Mike said smiling back and they shared one more kiss before heading to their spots.
Tina was on stage performing and looked to where Mike's parents' seats were. She saw Mike's mom and…an empty seat. Mike, who had his eyes fixed on Tina watching her perform, noticed her sudden saddened face and looked in the direction she was looking. His face dropped when he didn't see his dad.
The song ended and Tina and the girls went backstage. Tina knew Mike had seen what she saw and she went up to him.
"Hey" she said taking his hand.
He smiled at her sadly. "You were amazing" he said truthfully. She smiled wide and blushed alittle.
"Thank you. You're going to be too. Just focus on performing, don't worry about anything else" she said, trying to avoid directly talking about his dad.
Mike smiled a real smile at his girlfriend. He was so thankful for her support. He squeezed her hand, kissed her forehead, ran on stage, and gave the performance of his life.
When the play ended the auditorium had cleared out. Mike and Tina said bye to Mike's mom. She knew he was upset that his dad wasn't there but she told him how amazing he was and how proud she was of him.
The Glee club was helping the teachers and stage crew clean up when Mike disappeared into the choir room by himself. He sat in the dark on a chair trying hard to hold himself together. All his adrenaline wore off and now he couldn't stop thinking about how his dad didn't come. He silently started crying to himself.
After a few minutes that felt way longer, Mike heard footsteps and heard Tina's voice as she walked into the choir room.
"There you are" she said walking up to him. He looked up at her and looked so sad. Even in the dark she could tell he'd been crying.
"Hey" she said softly kneeing in front of him and taking his hands. "You were so amazing out there".
"He didn't come" Mike said sounding so defeated.
Tina kissed both his hands. "I know and I'm so sorry. It really is his loss though. When your mom goes home and tells him how amazing you were he is going to regret not coming. He probably already regrets it".
Mike didn't say anything.
After a few seconds of silence, Tina heard Mike sniffling. He was trying to hide it but he knew he could let his walls down with Tina. He leaned forward and put his forehead to hers for support. She pulled him forward and onto the floor with her and held him while he cried.
It broke her heart to see him so broken.
"I can't believe he didn't come" Mike said through his tears. Tina held him tighter. "He's been ignoring me since I told him I was doing the play but I really thought he would come. I put everything I had into my performance hoping that he would suddenly appear in his seat and be proud of me. I'm so stupid". Mike trailed off trying to catch his breathe.
"Listen to me. You are not stupid. Not one bit. Your dad - he's selfish. Taking your happiness away, making you miserable when you should be celebrating. Don't think about him. I know it's hard, he's your dad after all, but just think about all the people in that auditorium who loved you and your performance" Tina said rubbing his back. Mike calmed alittle.
"Look at me" Tina said wanting him to see how much she meant her next words. Mike sat up and looked into her eyes.
"I am so proud of you" she said putting extra emphasis on the sentence. "You danced AND you sang for one of the main parts in West Side Story. Do you know how incredible that is?!".
Mike gave a hint of a smile.
Tina continued "I know I'm not him, but I hope my awe over you makes you forget about how ridiculous he's being. He doesn't get to see the side of you that I truly love so so much Mike. I wish I could express it to you so you understand how amazing you are".
He didn't let her say anything else. He smashed his lips against hers kissing her hard for a few seconds.
When they broke apart he said "thank you". He put his hand gently on her cheek rubbing it. "You have no idea how much your words mean to me. How much you mean to me" he said, his voice cracking alittle. "Tina I wouldn't be where I am today and be as good as I am without you. You have helped me follow my dreams. Screw my dad, who needs him when I have you. Thank you for always supporting me".
"I'll always support you. I'll always be right here next to you as you follow your dreams" she said. He pulled her face closer to his and kissed her.
"I love you so much" Mike said.
"I love you so much too" Tina said smiling into his lips.
Mike gave Tina a big hug. "Thank you for making me feel better" he said. She squeezed him tighter and he did the same.
At that moment they heard their Glee friends coming down the hall talking as they entered the room.
"Hey guys, ready for the afterparty?" Rachel asked as they got closer to Tina and Mike. "Are you guys are okay?" she said as she saw Mike's puffy eyes. All their friends' faces grew concerned too.
"Yeah we're good now and definitely ready to party" Mike said. Tina looked up at him and smiled and the groups' concerned faces relaxed.
They went to Breadstix where Mr. Schue treated them to a great dinner and they sang karaoke.
Tina pulled Mike up on stage with her to sing. They sang Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes' "I Know What You Did Last Summer" - not because it had to do with their relationship, but just because it was a fun upbeat song to sing. Everyone cheered for them.
Gosh did Mike love performing. Especially with Tina by his side, literally and figuratively. And he couldn't stop kissing her throughout the night to show how much he appreciated her.
