Prologue.

...

In a quiet, dimly lit hospital room, Kori leaned back into her bed, savoring the rare moment of tranquility amidst the sterile surroundings. The soft hum of medical equipment and the faint scent of antiseptic filled the air, creating an atmosphere that contrasted with the emotions coursing through her weary body.

Dry sweat glistened on her brow, evidence of the physical toll she had endured. Her long, red hair was carefully pinned up in a large bun, not only to keep it out of her face but also to prevent it from becoming tangled and adding to her discomfort. The lower half of her body still throbbed with residual pain, a constant reminder of the arduous journey she had just undertaken. Thankfully, the pain medications provided some relief, dulling the edges of her agony and allowing her to find a semblance of solace.

Though she had chosen to be alone, a faint sadness lingered within her. Visiting hours had ended, and her friends had been reluctant to leave her side. Yet, despite their genuine concern, Kori had insisted that she would be fine on her own. She had made a choice, a decision that resonated with an undercurrent of sadness.

The sound of a small squeak emanated from the bundle cradled in her arms, interrupting Kori's reverie. She glanced downward, her tired eyes brightening at the sight of her precious newborn. A gentle smile curved her lips as she gazed lovingly the delicate features of her daughter.

As the infant stirred, her delicate eyelids fluttered open, revealing the same vibrant green eyes that mirrored her mother's. Tenderness swelled within Kori's in that instant as a connection was forged- a silent bond of understanding between mother and child. The weight of the world outside seemed to fade away as Kori's focus shifted entirely to the life she had brought into existence.

"It's you and me against the world, my love." Kori whispered, her voice laced with affection. She traced a finger along her daughter's tiny hand, marveling at the fragility and strength intertwined within it. Despite the challenges that lay ahead, Kori felt an overwhelming sense of determination and devotion. She knew that together, they would navigate life's ups and downs, supporting each other through every triumph and tribulation.

Kori didn't share the news of her pregnancy with the father. Their relationship had been a volatile ride, marked by a series of turbulent breakups and fleeting reconciliations, fueled primarily by a passionate sexual desire. Over the years, their love had proved insufficient to maintain a stable and fulfilling partnership. The result of their differences led to a significant falling out, accompanied by a mutual understanding that it was in their best interest to sever ties for good.

And so, he left.

He returned to his place of origin, his presence fading from Kori's life. She, on the other hand, remained in the place she considered home, seeking solace and familiarity amidst the challenges that lay ahead. However, shortly after their separation, Kori discovered that she was with child.

Although the decision not to inform the father weighed heavily on Kori's heart, she believed it was in their best interest. Deep within her, she recognized that his presence was not what their child needed most. The father's path lay elsewhere, where he could devote himself to responsibilities beyond their fractured relationship.

With a mix of sadness and determination, Kori chose to shield her daughter from the complexity of their past. She made a sacrifice born out of love and a desire to provide a stable and secure environment. While grappling with her emotions and the consequences of her decision, Kori knew it was best if he stayed where he was needed most and that was not with them.

In that small hospital room, amidst the dim lighting and the hushed silence, Kori found solace in the knowledge that she was not truly alone anymore. Together, they would face whatever challenges came their way, united by an unbreakable bond of love.
